SPIRITBOX (Facebook ) aus Kanada sorgen schon vor Veröffentlichung ihres nun kommenden Full-Length-Debütalbums „Eternal Blue“ für mächtig Wirbel und die Fans vermehren sich in Scharen. Allein die vorab veröffentlichten Videosingles werden auf YouTube wie verrückt angeschaut und bescheren der Band Millionen von Clicks. Einfach Wahnsinn! Man kann schon fast von einem irren Hype sprechen, mit dem die Band wohl selber am wenigsten gerechnet hat und davon überrollt wurde. Sie haben bereits mit ihren veröffentlichten Singles gezeigt, dass sie nicht in eine bestimmte Schublade zu stecken sind.

Wo liegt das Erfolgsgeheimnis?

Nun, musikalische Einfaltigkeit ist es jedenfalls nicht! Der Sound strotzt vor Power, aber eben nicht nur. Die Mischung machts. Nachdem ich die ersten Singles gehört hatte, fühlte ich mich teilweise an die Band ARCHITECTS erinnert. Und nun stellt sich tatsächlich heraus, dass der Sänger dieser Band, nämlich Sam Carter, als Gastsänger bei dem Song „Yellowjacket“ tatkräftig mitgesungen hat und sich mit Courtney LaPlante ein energisches Duett liefert. Die charismatische Frontfrau Courtney LaPlante weiß aber auch ganz alleine mit ihren variablen Sangeskünsten auf dem Album voll und ganz zu überzeugen.

Über das Debütalbum „Eternal Blue“ hat Courtney folgendes zu sagen:

Wir sind sehr gespannt darauf, unser Album endlich zu veröffentlichen. Es ist ein Werk, an dem wir seit über zwei Jahren gearbeitet haben. Der Aufnahmeprozess lag wegen der Pandemie lange auf Eis. Es war eine neue Erfahrung, nicht wie gewohnt und ganz selbstverständlich ein neues Album aufzunehmen. Ich muss sagen, obwohl wir nie vorhatten, so lange mit der Platte zu warten, denke ich, dass es den Songs geholfen hat, stärker zu werden. Ich bin so glücklich mit jedem einzelnen Song, dass ich wünschte, ich könnte jeden einzelnen als Single mit einem Musikvideo veröffentlichen. Sie spiegeln alle verschiedene Momente und Einflüsse in unserem Leben wider. Wir hatten genug Zeit, um genau die Musik zu veröffentlichen, die wir in die Welt hinausbringen möchten, ohne Kompromisse eingehen zu müssen. Jede einzelne Note und jede einzelne Silbe ist die Musik, von der wir immer geträumt haben und wir sind sehr stolz darauf.

Böse Verstörtheit

ist ein expressionistisches Merkmal von SPIRITBOX. Die Singe „Holy Roller“ ist das perfekte Beispiel dafür und hat vor einem Jahr einen bleibenden Eindruck bei mir hinterlassen. Ein finsteres Soundspektakel, welches eine unglaubliche Faszination ausübt. Das Monster „Holy Roller“ hat einen megafetten Groove und die Growls sind ungemein böse. Dazu gesellen sich noch ein paar verstörende Soundelemente und fertig ist alles niederschmetternde Horrorshow. Lasst Euch von dem schönen Blumenmädchen nicht täuschen. Denn oft tun sich unter einer schönen Oberfläche wahre Abgründe auf.

Musik zwischen den Extremen

SPIRITBOX können knallhart losbrettern und Sängerin Courtney kann Euch mit ihren extremen Growls die Haut vom Körper reißen. Doch dann wollen sie mit einer sanften melodische Seite, die Seele berühren. Und man kann es nach den ersten Songs kaum glauben, dass auch dies ein Charakteristikum von SPIRITBOX ist, wenn z.B. „The Summit“ oder „Secret Garden“ mit einer fast poppigen Leichtigkeit überraschen.

Manchmal wird man auch aus dem Nichts in gegenteiliger Form überrascht, wenn z.B. beim eigentlich zurückhaltenden Song „Circle With Me“ im Verlauf plötzlich ein brutaler Einschlag erfolgt, der einem glatt die Gesichtszüge entgleiten lässt.

Erwartungen

gibt es immer an eine Band. Gerade bei einem Debütalbum gibt es viel Spannung, wohin die Reise geht. Ich denke, dass viele nach der ersten Single „Holy Roller“ einfach ein brachiales Metalcore-Album erwartet haben, das fast ausnahmslos von vorne bis hinten durchknallt. Und genau das ist es eben nicht! Warum nicht? Weil es ein persönliches Album ist, eine musikalische Reise durch verschiedene Emotionen. Dies wurde deutlich, nachdem SPIRITBOX Singles wie „Constance“ oder „Secret Garden“ veröffentlicht hatten. Deswegen erfordert das Album eine gewisse Aufmerksamkeit, um ein

Verstehen

zu entwickeln, warum die Band so klingt wie sie klingt. Dann eröffnet sich dem Hörer, warum SPIRITBOX auf ihrem Album „Eternal Blue“ zwischen den Welten wandeln und einerseits mit einer ungeheuren verrückten Brutalität alles niederschmettern, aber andererseits sich zurückhaltend geben und mit einer sanften Melodik fast verletzlich wirken. Dies wird vor allem im Finale des Albums deutlich. Der Song „Constance“ am Ende thematisiert den Verlust eines geliebten Menschen durch Alzheimer-Demenz. Courtney hat in diesem Song den Verlust ihrer Großmutter Constance verarbeitet. (Das sensible Thema Demenz war übrigens auch Thema der Band THE RETICENT. Sie haben sich auf einem ganzen Album („The Oubliette“) der Sache gewidmet.)

Fazit

Es ist ein gutes, aber kein einfaches Album! Ich bin im Angesicht der krassen Gegensätze hin- und hergerissen. Manche Songs feiere ich so dermaßen ab, dass mir die Luft wegbleibt. Ich schätze natürlich auch die zurückhaltenden melancholischen Songs und verstehe den Sinn dahinter! Und doch ertappe ich mich bei der Frage, ob mir mehr Präsenz von den energiegeladenen SPIRITBOX nicht besser gefallen hätte. Eine Frage, die ich noch nicht abschließend beantworten kann.

SPIRITBOX haben aber ohne Frage ein authentisches und aussagkräftiges Album abgeliefert, dessen Erscheinungsform einer persönlichen emotionalen Reise von Courtney geschuldet ist, die nicht nur auf der Sonnenseite des Lebens unterwegs ist, sondern auf der Schattenseite mit Depressionen zu kämpfen hat. Und solche Reisen sind nicht vorhersehbar oder in eine bestimmte Schublade zu stecken. Daher bin ich sehr neugierig auf die zukünftigen Werke von SPIRITBOX, denn man wird sich nie so richtig sicher sein können, was einen erwartet.

SPIRITBOX (Facebook ) from Canada are already causing a stir before the release of their upcoming full-length debut album „Eternal Blue“ and the fans are multiplying in droves. The pre-released video singles alone are being watched like crazy on YouTube and bring the band millions of clicks. Simply madness! One can almost speak of a crazy hype, with which the band itself probably least expected and was overrun by it. They have already shown with their released singles that they are not to be put into a certain pigeonhole.

Where is the secret of success?

Well, it’s certainly not musical monotony! The sound is bursting with power, but not only. The mixture makes it. After listening to the first singles, I felt partly reminded of the band ARCHITECTS. And now it actually turns out that the singer of this band, namely Sam Carter, sang energetically as a guest singer on the song „Yellowjacket“ and delivers an energetic duet with Courtney LaPlante. The charismatic front woman Courtney LaPlante also knows how to convince completely alone with her variable singing skills on the album.

We are very excited to finally release our album. It is a work that we have been working on for over two years. The recording process was on hold for a long time because of the pandemic. It was a new experience not to record a new album as usual and as a matter of course. I have to say, even though we never intended to wait so long to make the record, I think it helped the songs become stronger. I’m so happy with every single song that I wish I could release each one as a single with a music video. They all reflect different moments and influences in our lives. We’ve had enough time to release exactly the music we want to put out into the world without compromising. Every single note and syllable is the music we’ve always dreamed of and we’re very proud of it.

Evil distortion

is an expressionistic characteristic of SPIRITBOX. The song „Holy Roller“ is the perfect example of this and left a lasting impression on me a year ago. A sinister sound spectacle that exerts an incredible fascination. This monstersong has a mega fat groove and the growls are incredibly evil. In addition, there are a few disturbing sound elements and finished is everything devastating horror show. Don’t let the beautiful flower girl fool you. Because often under a beautiful surface true abysses open up.

Music between the extremes

SPIRITBOX can rock hard and singer Courtney can tear your skin from your body with her extreme growls. But then they want to touch the soul with a soft melodic side. Expectations

I think that after hearing their first single „Holy Roller“ many people (like me) simply expected a brute Metalcore-Album that almost without exception bangs from front to back. And that’s exactly what it’s not! Why not? Because it’s a personal album, a musical journey through different emotions. This became clear after SPIRITBOX releases such singles like „Constance“ or „Secret Garden“. That’s why the album requires a certain amount of attention to

understand

the whole thing. Then it opens up to the listener why SPIRITBOX on their album „Eternal Blue“ walk between the worlds and on the one hand smash down everything with a tremendous crazy brutality, but on the other hand give themselves restrained and seem almost vulnerable with a gentle melodicism. This becomes especially clear in the finale of the album. The song „Constance“ at the end deals with the loss of a loved one due to Alzheimer’s dementia. Courtney has processed the loss of her grandmother Constance in this song.(Incidentally, the sensitive subject of dementia was also the subject of the band THE RETICENT last year. They devoted an entire album („The Oubliette“) to it).

Conclusion

It’s a good album, but not an easy one! I am torn in the face of the stark contrasts. Some songs I celebrate so much that I can’t breathe. Of course, I also appreciate the restrained melancholic songs and mean to understand their background! And yet I find myself wondering if I wouldn’t have liked more presence from the energetic SPIRITBOX. A question that I can not yet answer conclusively.

However, SPIRITBOX have without question delivered an authentic and meaningful album, whose manifestation is due to a personal emotional journey of Courtney, who is not only traveling on the sunny side of life, but struggling with depression on the dark side. And such journeys are not predictable or pigeonholed. Therefore, I am very curious about the future works of SPIRITBOX, because you can never really be sure what to expect.
