Beständig und regelmäßig wie ein Uhrwerk beehren uns ARCH ENEMY mit neuen Alben. „Blood Dynasty“ ist das zwölfte Album der schwedischen Band, die sich 1995 gegründet haben und nun dieses Jahr ihr 30-jähriges Jubiläum feiern dürfen. Die Band befindet sich schon lange an der Speerspitze des Melodic Death Metal. ARCH ENEMY sind mega erfolgreich in dem, was sie tun.

Sie waren eine der ersten Bands, die im Bereich Death Metal eine Frau als Sängerin verpflichteten, nachdem zunächst ein Mann diesen Job innehatte, aber im Jahr 2000 die Band verließ. 2001 übernahm Angela Gossow für lange Zeit bis 2014 den Job und prägte mit ihren überragenden Leistungen den Stil der Band. Alissa White-Gluz trat das schwere Erbe an und meisterte die Herausforderung mit Bravour, so dass sie nach wie vor als Frontfrau von ARCH ENEMY auftritt.

Leider verließ Gitarrenvirtuose Jeff Loomis im Jahr 2023 nach fast zehn Jahren die Band, was meiner Meinung schon ein herber Verlust ist. Für ihn ist Gitarrist Joey Concepcion in die Band eingestiegen.

Blood Dynasty.

beginnt standesgemäß mit einem knallharten Hammerschlag. Bei „Dream Stealer“ stehen die Zeichen auf Zerstörung. Mit maximaler Intensität und Schnelligkeit ballern ARCH ENEMY einen musikalisches Inferno raus, dass einer Naturgewalt gleicht. An allen instrumentalen Fronten wird Vollgas gegeben. Das Gitarrenspiel ist ein echter Traum, so dass der Weggang von Jeff mir tatsächlich nicht auffällt. Da fliegen immer wieder geile Leads durch den Song plus einem irren wilden Solo. Also muss man feststellen, dass man mit Joey Concepcion an der Gitarre überhaupt keine Abstriche machen muss. Zusammen mit Michael Amott hört sich alles fantastisch an.

ARCH ENEMY haben einen ansprechenden Mix zwischen Moderne und Altbewährtem erschaffen, der wie gewohnt unheimlich stark auftritt und sehr unterhaltsam ist. ARCH ENEMY haben viele Möglichkeiten der Entfaltung für sich eröffnet. Dies wird umgehend beim zweiten Song „Illuminate the Path„ deutlich, der nicht ganz so heftig auf den Putz haut, da er mehr auf melodischen Wellen segelt, aber trotzdem noch genügend Druck in den Strophen aufbaut. Im Refrain kommen dann die selten eingesetzten cleanen Vocals zum Einsatz.

Die Kompositionen sind komplex, aber nicht kompliziert. Man darf sich über schöne Wendungen in den Songs freuen, die immer wieder für Abwechslung sorgen. Die Übergänge in die verschiedenen Abschnitte sind galant gestaltet. Die Songs strotzen vor brutalen riffgeschwängerten Passagen, die wie ein tollwütiges Biest um sich schlagen. Gleichzeitig wird man melodischen Ansprüchen mehr als gerecht.

Eine extra große Portion davon bekommt man auch im Song „Paper Tiger“ zu hören, der nicht so brutal schwer klingt, sondern eher recht leichtfüßig daherkommt, indem er viel Heavy Metal Luft einatmet. Ist mal was anderes und lockert das ganze Konzept auf.

An sich sind ARCH ENEMY sehr sparsam mit cleanen Vocals, doch bei „Vivre Libre“ ist der melodische Gesang genau das Programm. Das ist dann aber doch ne große Überraschung. Eine gefühlvolle Ballade mit französischen Lyrics hätte ich nicht erwartet. Tatsächlich bin ich mir noch nicht so ganz sicher, was ich davon halten soll. Der cleane gefühlvolle Gesang von Alissa ist toll und zeigt mal eine ganz andere Seite von ihr. Das ist schon interessant und wunderbar anzuhören. Da gibt es nix zu mäkeln. Es ist zudem ein schöner Song. Aber möchte ich das wirklich auf einem ARCH ENEMY Album haben? Na wie auch immer…. Es bleibt die einzige Ausnahme auf einem Album.

Michael Amott sagt zu diesem Song:

Es gibt auch einen Coversong, ‚Vivre Libre‘, das ist eine französische Hardrock-Metal-Ballade aus den 80ern, von einer Band namens Blaspheme. Es hat einen französischen Text, und Alissa spricht fließend Französisch, da sie in Quebec, Kanada, aufgewachsen ist. Es sollte eigentlich ein Bonustrack werden, bis wir bis wir ihre Stimme darauf hörten, und dann hieß es: ‚Verdammt, das ist klasse! Es klang so, als sollte es auf dem Album sein. Die Leute können es hassen oder lieben, das ist mir egal!

Fazit

ARCH ENEMY können mit Stolz auf ihr zwölftes Werk blicken, denn „Blood Dynasty“ zeigt eindrucksvoll die musikalische Entwicklung der Band, die es versteht auf höchst unterhaltsame Weise die Moderne mit Altbewährtem zu verbinden. So strotzen, bis auf eine Ausnahme, die Songs vor brutalen riffgeschwängerten Attacken, die wie ein tollwütiges Biest um sich schlagen. Gleichzeitig wird man melodischen Ansprüchen mehr als gerecht.

ARCH ENEMY constantly and regularly grace us with new albums like clockwork. „Blood Dynasty“ is the twelfth album from the Swedish band, who formed in 1995 and are now celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. The band has long been at the forefront of melodic death metal. ARCH ENEMY are very successful at what they do.

They were one of the first bands in death metal to employ a female singer, after a man initially held the job but left the band in 2000. In 2001, Angela Gossow took over the job for a long time until 2014 and shaped the band’s style with her outstanding performances. Alissa White-Gluz took over the difficult legacy and mastered the challenge with flying colors, so that she still appears as the front woman of ARCH ENEMY.

Unfortunately, guitar virtuoso Jeff Loomis left the band in 2023 after almost ten years, which in my opinion is a bitter loss. Guitarist Joey Concepcion has joined the band in his place.

Blood Dynasty

begins appropriately with a hard-hitting hammer blow. Dream Stealer“ is all about destruction. With maximum intensity and speed, ARCH ENEMY blast out a musical inferno that resembles a force of nature. Full throttle is given on all instrumental fronts. The guitar playing is a real dream, so that I actually don’t notice Jeff’s departure. There are always great leads flying through the song plus a crazy wild solo. So you have to realize that with Joey Concepcion on guitar you don’t have to make any compromises at all. Together with Michael Amott, everything sounds fantastic.

ARCH ENEMY have created an appealing mix of the modern and old style, which, as usual, is incredibly powerful and very entertaining. ARCH ENEMY have opened up many possibilities for development. This becomes immediately clear with the second song „Illuminate the Path“, which doesn’t hit the ground quite as hard, as it sails more on melodic waves, but still builds up enough pressure in the verses. The rarely used clean vocals are used in the chorus.

The compositions are more complex, but not complicated. You can look forward to beautiful twists and turns in the songs, which always provide variety. The transitions into the various sections are gallantly designed. The songs are bursting with brutal, riff-soaked passages that lash out like a rabid beast. At the same time, melodic demands are more than satisfied.

An extra large portion of this can also be heard in the song „Paper Tiger“, which doesn’t sound so brutally heavy, but rather quite light-footed, breathing in a lot of heavy metal air. It’s something different and loosens up the whole concept.

ARCH ENEMY are usually very sparing with clean vocals, but on „Vivre Libre“ the melodic vocals are exactly what they are supposed to be. But that’s a big surprise. I wouldn’t have expected a soulful ballad with French lyrics. In fact, I’m still not quite sure what to make of it. Alissa’s clean, soulful vocals are great and show a completely different side of her. It’s interesting and wonderful to listen to. There’s nothing to complain about. It’s also a beautiful song. But do I really want that on an ARCH ENEMY album? Whatever…. It remains the only exception on an album.

There is also a cover song, ‘Vivre Libre’, which is a French hard rock metal ballad from the ‘80s, by a band called Blaspheme. It has French lyrics, and Alissa speaks fluent French as she grew up in Quebec, Canada. It was going to be a bonus track, until we heard her vocal on it, and then it was, ‘Damn, this is killer!’ It sounded like it should be on the album. People can hate it or love it, I don’t mind.

ARCH ENEMY can look back on their twelfth album with pride, as „Blood Dynasty“ impressively demonstrates the musical development of the band, who know how to combine the modern with the old style and tested in a highly entertaining way. With one exception, the songs are bursting with brutal, riff-soaked attacks that lash out like a rabid beast. At the same time, melodic demands are more than satisfied.
