zaubert die australische Band ACOLYTE (Facebook ) ins Gehör. Auf die Band bin ich gestoßen, als ich das Interview mit Jonathon Barwick alias FIERCE DEITY geführt habe. Dieses wird hier bald bei `metal-heads.de´ zu lesen sein, denn dieser präsentiert bald sein neues Album „Power Wisdom Courage“. In diesem Zusammenhang erwähnte er unter anderem David Van Pelt als Gastmusiker, der bei ACOLYTE für die Keyboards and Synthesisers verantwortlich ist.

Neugierig wie ich bin, habe ich mich umgehend über die Band informiert und siehe da… ACOLYTE haben jüngst im Mai das Album „Entropy“ veröffentlicht. Und da mir das Album wirklich sehr gut gefallen hat, habe ich mich dazu entschieden, ein Review darüber zu schreiben. Ausschlaggebend war ebenfalls, dass ACOLYTE mich mit ihrem teils sehr außergewöhnlichen Sound in einen

einzigartigen Kosmos

gezogen haben. Dies gelingt ihnen durch verschiedene kunstvolle Arrangements und extravagante Klangwelten, die sich vom Standard abheben. Hierbei ensteht eine Welt voller Emotionen, die von Verlust, Trauer und Depression geprägt ist, aber auch von Hoffnung und Kampfeswillen. Insofern spiegeln die konzeptionellen Songs das Gefühlslabyrinth einer Person wieder, die mit einem tragischen Verlust leben und umgehen muss. Es ist ein

emotionales Kaleidoskop.

Jeder Song präsentiert so viele Facetten und Wendungen und erschafft Stimmungen und Bilder, die den Hörer in die Musik von ACOLYTE hineinziehen und einfangen. Daher habe ich nun auch verstanden, warum FIERCE DEITY sich ausgerechnet für den Keyborder David van Pelt entschieden hat. Denn seine Klänge sind in der Tat genial und ein wichtiger Aspekt in der musikalischen Welt von ACOLYTE und haben haben mich schon direkt beim Titelsong „Entropy“ fasziniert. Sie haben zum Teil diesen 7o ér Jahre Touch, klingen crazy oder erzeugen eine Tiefe in den Songs.

Es dauert nicht lange und vor Ende der ersten Minute beim Song „Entropy“ wird die erste coole Synthiesalve abgefeuert. Ferner wird der Song nach deftigem Beginn zunächst von einem coolen bassbetonten Groove dominiert. Das imposante Bassspiel von Jason Grondman kommt übrigens auf dem ganzen Album vortrefflich zur Geltung. Die kraftvolle Stimme von Sängerin Morgan in all ihren Variationen fällt ebenfalls sofort positiv auf. Gönnt Euch doch erst einmal den Song „Entropy“, der bereits die Stärken von ACOLYTE offenbart.

Intelligentes ausgereiftes Songwriting

lässt kräftigere riffbetonte Parts mit bezaubernden exotischen Klangwellen, die eine wunderbare Coexistenz eingehen. Überdies verstehen ACOLYTE es passend zu den Themen der Songs die richtigen Klangwelten zu erzeugen. Ich rede von Welten, da der Sound eine tolle unendliche Tiefe erzeugt, was der fast allgegenwärtigen Präsenz von Keyborder David Van Pelt zu verdanken ist. Diese Präsenz ist immer spürbar, mal fast unmerklich im Hintergrund, mal als tragender Soundteppich oder eben auch in dominanter Form.

Eine wertvolle Eigenschaft

von ACOLYTE besteht darin, dass wirklich jedes Mitglied der Band mit seinem Instrument immer wieder seine hervorstechenden Momente hat, in denen er besonders brillieren kann. Dazu eröffnet das homogene Zusammenspiel der Band eine prächtige Reise, die emotional und ergreifend ist. So kann man sich neben den bereits erwähnten Bandmitgliedern an einem detailfreudigen punktgenauen Schlagzeug von Chris Cameron erfreuen und den tollen vielseitigen Gitarristen Brandon Valentine bewundern.

Auch wenn ACOLYTE ausufernden epischen Progressive Metal musizieren, scheuen sie sich nicht davor mit „Resilience“ mal eine kurze folkloristisch angehauchte Ballade einzustreuen, die instrumental im Vergleich minimalistisch gehalten ist und damit dem tollen gefühlvollen Gesang von Morgan eine hervorragende Bühne bietet.

Demgegenüber zeigt das cineastische „Idiosyncracy“ wieder eine ganz andere Seite, nicht nur aufgrund seiner imposanten Spielzeit von über 11 Minuten. Klanglich wird man hier mit zum Teil abendländischen Klängen verwöhnt, die einen mystischen Schleier um den Song legen. Zu diesem Song gibt es ganz aktuell ein ansehnliches Live-Video mit einer beachtlichen Lichtshow in sakraler Kirchenatmosphäre.

Mit mehr Kraft und Heavyness im Gepäck geht der rockige Song „Resentment“ ins Rennen. Hier geht´s schon ne Spur wilder zu und der Song ist nicht ganz so verspielt, sondern geht geht im Vergleich zu dem anderen Material eher straight voran, entzückt mit einem grandiosen Refrain und einem klassisch fetzigen Gitarrensolo.

Fazit

Heutzutage ist es als Band nicht mehr so einfach eine Nische für sich zu finden, in der man einen ganz eigenen Sound mit einer innovativen Ader komponiert. ACOLYTE haben dies meiner Meinung nach geschafft. ACOLYTE sind für mich musikalisches Ballett. Die Musik ist anmutig und emotional ausdrucksstark. Wie beim Ballett erfordert dies viel Gefühl, aber auch Kraft und Koordination. Es ist eine spannende Verbindung von klassischer und moderner Interpretation des Progressive-Metal. Vor allem die Einbindung der 70′ er Jahre Synthies bieten etwas ganz besonderes.

„Entropy“ ist somit ein ausgereiftes wohl durchdachtes Album geworden, dass es mühelos schafft den Hörer zu faszinieren und zu verblüffen. Ein beeindruckender Kosmos, den ACOLYTE erschaffen haben.

Das ist mir sehr starke neun Punkte wert.

conjures up the Australian band ACOLYTE (Facebook ). I came across the band when I did the interview with Jonathon Barwick aka FIERCE DEITY. This will be here soon at `metal-heads.de‘ to read, because he presents soon his new album „Power Wisdom Courage“. In this context he mentioned among others David Van Pelt as guest musician, who is responsible for the keyboards and synthesisers at ACOLYTE.

Curious as I am, I immediately informed myself about the band and lo and behold… ACOLYTE have recently released the album „Entropy“ in May. And since I really liked the album, I decided to write a review about it. The deciding factor was also that ACOLYTE grap me with their partly very unusual sound in a

unique cosmos.

They succeed in this through various artful arrangements and extravagant sound worlds that stand out from the standard. A world full of emotions, marked by loss, grief and depression, but also by hope and the will to fight. The conceptual songs reflect the labyrinth of a person who has to live and deal with a tragic loss. It is an

emotional kaleidoscope.

Each song presents beautiful facets and twists, creating moods and images that draw the listener in and capture the music of ACOLYTE. I have now also understood why FIERCE DEITY has chosen the keyboarder David van Pelt as a guest musician on his album. Because his sounds are indeed ingenious and an important aspect in the musical world of ACOLYTE. These have already fascinated me directly on the title track „Entropy“. They have partly this 7o ér years touch, sound crazy or create a depth in the songs.

It doesn’t take long and before the end of the first minute of the song „Entropy“ the first cool synth salvo is let loose. Otherwise, the song is initially dominated by a cool bass-driven groove after a hefty start. By the way, Jason Grondman’s imposing bass playing comes into its own admirably throughout the album. The powerful voice of singer Morgan in all its variations is also immediately noticeable in a positive way. Treat yourself first to the song „Entropy“, which already reveals the strengths of ACOLYTE.

Intelligent mature songwriting

leaves stronger riff accentuated parts with enchanting exotic sound waves, which enter into a wonderful coexistence. ACOLYTE know how to create the right sound worlds to match the themes of the songs. I’m talking about worlds, because the sound creates a great infinite depth, thanks to the almost omnipresent presence of keyboarder David Van Pelt. This presence is always noticeable, sometimes almost imperceptibly in the background, sometimes as a supporting sound carpet or even in the foreground.

A valuable characteristic

of ACOLYTE is that really each member of the band with his instrument always has his salient moments in which he can particularly shine. In addition, the homogeneous interplay of the band opens a magnificent journey that is emotional and moving. Thus, in addition to the already mentioned band members, one can enjoy a detailed accurate drumming of Chris Cameron and admire the great versatile guitarist Brandon Valentine.

Even though ACOLYTE play sprawling epic progressive metal, they are not afraid to throw in a short folkloristic ballad with „Resilience“, which is kept instrumentally minimalistic in comparison and thus offers an excellent stage for Morgan’s great soulful vocals.

In contrast, the cinematic „Idiosyncracy“ shows a completely different side again, not only because of its imposing playing time of over 11 minutes. Sonically, one is spoiled here with partly occidental sounds that put a mystical veil around the song. To this song, there is a very current respectable live video with a remarkable light show in a sacred church atmosphere.

With more power and heavyness in the luggage the rocky song „Resentment“ goes into the race. Here it’s a bit wilder and the song goes in comparison to the other material rather straight ahead, delighting with a great chorus and a classically groovy guitar solo.

Result

Nowadays it is not so easy as a band to find a niche for yourself, in which you compose your very own sound with an innovative vein. ACOLYTE have managed this in my opinion. ACOLYTE are musical ballet for me. The music is graceful and emotionally expressive. Like ballet, it requires a lot of feeling, but also strength and coordination. It is an exciting combination of classical and modern interpretation of Progressive-Metal. Especially the integration of the 70′ s synths offer something very special.

„Entropy“ has thus become a mature, well thought-out album that effortlessly manages to fascinate and amaze the listener. An impressive cosmos that ACOLYTE have created. This already makes them a shining star.
