MOONSPELL (Facebook ) haben mich seit 1995 begleitet, als sie mit Ihrem Durchbruch mit dem Debütalbum „Wolfheart“ hatten. 26 Jahre später nun Album Nr. 13 „Hermitage“.

Veränderungen

sind im Laufe der Zeit unausweichlich. Auf dem 2015´er Album „Extinct“ gab es eingängigen ungehobelten, mit teils schönen eingängigen Melodien, verwobenen Dark Metal auf die Ohren, was mir sehr gut gefallen hat. Der Nachfolger „1755“ aus dem Jahre 2017 ging in eine noch härtere Richtung und hatte eine bis dato noch nie dagewesene symphonische theatralische Ausstrahlung, die in Sachen Härte noch ne Schippe drauflegte. Das Material war schwerer und düsterer und auch nicht so leicht zugänglich, denn die Song waren ziemlich vollgepackt.

Das neue Album „Hermitage“

wird am 26.02.2021 das Licht der Welt erblicken. So viel sei gesagt: MOONSPELL haben einen neuen Weg eingeschlagen. Mit dem Sound der alten Alben, insbesondere im Vergleich zum letzten Album, hat das nicht mehr viel zu tun. MOONSPELL drehen sich um 180 Grad und entschleunigen sich und die Hörerschaft mit dem insgesamt ruhigeren Album „Hermitage“. MOONSPELL sind eine alte und gestandene Größe im Metal-Geschäft. Warum sollten sie nicht mal mit etwas überraschen? Allerdings hätte ich…

Pink Floyd

wohl nie mit dem Sound von MOONSPELL in Verbindung gebracht. Und so dachte ich bei den ersten Klängen des Openers „The Greater Good“, dass ich aus Versehen eine falsche Scheibe erwischt hätte. Sehr ruhig, ja fast sanft und zurückhaltend ertönen die ersten zwei Minuten und der Song bleibt zunächst sphärisch und zurückhaltend, bis er in den letzten 90 Sekunden an Kraft gewinnt. Das Riffing tritt mehr in den Vordergrund und Fernando Ribeiro verlässt die cleane melodische Ebene und wechselt in den aggressiven Shouting-Modus. Eine coole Nummer!

Zu Stärke und Kraft

aus vergangenen Tagen gelangen MOONSPELL allerdings nicht allzu häufig. Die Ansätze sind da, aber irgendwie bremsen sich MOONSPELL immer wieder aus und bewegen sich bewusst in ruhigeren Gewässern. „Common Prayers“ trumpft mit einem dominanten Bass auf. Das Riffing tritt stellenweise in den Hintergrund und melodische Synthies bestimmen das Geschehen. Dann ertönt wieder zum Ende hin der stimmliche Ausbruch und fertig.

Entschleunigung

Der Song „All Or Nothing“ klingt, und das ist jetzt keine große Überraschung, ebenfalls sehr gemäßigt. Lieblicher Gesang wird zunächst von einer Akustikgitarre begleitet. Aber ich muss zugeben, dass mir der Einsatz mit der bluesigen E-Gitarre gut gefällt. Das bringt ein wenig Kante und Coolness in die liebliche Erscheinung dieser melancholischen Ballade. Das glasklare Gitarrensolo im Mittelteil und am Ende bietet ebenfalls genüssliche Momente.

„Hermitage“

als Titelsong lässt mich dann doch aufhorchen. Es passiert mal was und der Song zeigt dann doch endlich, dass MOONSPELL den alten Tugenden nicht ganz abgeschworen haben. Der Song hat eine starke Präsenz und mächtige Ausstrahlung. Die Drums schlagen ordentlich durch und es wird erheblich gitarrenlastiger. Der Gesang tritt deutlich energischer auf.

Vollbremsung

„Entitlement“ umgarnt den Hörer dann wieder mit tollen schmeichelnden lieblichen Sangesmelodien auf einer Wolke von melodisch erklingenden Instrumenten. Bei Minute 03:43 fühlte ich mich auf einen härteren Verlauf des Songs vorbereitet, aber diese Erwartung wird mit einem plötzlichen brutalen Break nicht erfüllt. Diese Vollbremsung ist mir zu hart, auch wenn im weiteren Verlauf ein langes super gespieltes Gitarrensolo Freude bereitet.

„The Hermit Saints“ bietet gesanglich Abwechslung und überrascht neben den harschen Vocals von Fernando mit ungewohntem mehrstimmigem Chorus, der zu gefallen weiß. Eine bombastische Nummer mit rockiger Attitüde und epischem Charakter. Eine tolle Nummer.

Fazit

MOONSPELL verlassen mit „Hermitage“ die raue See und schippern nun in ruhigeren Gewässern. Zwar sind einige Stromschnellen vorhanden, aber schlussendlich bleibt festzuhalten, dass die Songs filigraner und fragiler geworden sind. Technisch ist alles perfekt umgesetzt und die Produktion ist über jeden Zweifel erhaben. Ich kann mich mit dem Ergebnis allerdings nicht in allen Belangen so richtig anfreunden, weil mir das Album insgesamt zu ruhig und unspektakulär ausgefallen ist, auch wenn raffinierte Momente und Songs vorhanden sind. Die kraftvollen Ansätze bzw. Momente, bei denen sich der Sound mal aufbäumt, sind mir zu präsent. Aber es ist kein schlechtes Album geworden, nur anders. Und ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass manche Fans dem zwar nicht so viel abgewinnen können, aber MOONSPELL mit diesem Album dafür neue Fans hinzugewinnen.

MOONSPELL (Facebook ) have accompanied me since 1995, when they had their breakthrough with the debut album „Wolfheart“. 26 years later now album no. 13 „Hermitage“.

Changes

are inevitable in the course of time. On the album „Extinct“ (2015) there was catchy uncouth, with partly beautiful catchy melodies, interwoven dark metal, which I liked very much. „1755“ as the successor from 2017 went in an even heavier direction and had a hitherto unprecedented symphonic theatrical aura, which took it up a notch in terms of hardness. The material was much heavier and darker and also not so easily accessible, because the songs were pretty packed.

The new album „Hermitage“

will see the light of day on 26.02.2021. So much is said: MOONSPELL have taken a completely new path. With the sound of the old albums, especially compared to the last album, it no longer has much to do. MOONSPELL turn around 180 degrees and decelerate themselves and the listeners with the overall quiet album „Hermitage“. MOONSPELL are an old and established name in the metal business. Pink Floyd

probably never associated with the sound of MOONSPELL. And so I thought at the first sounds of the opener „The Greater Good“ that I had accidentally caught a wrong disc. Very quiet, almost gentle and restrained sound the first two minutes and the song initially remains spherical and restrained, until the last 90 seconds initially the song gains strength. The riffing comes more to the fore and Fernando Ribeiro leaves the clean melodic level and switches to aggressive shouting mode. A cool number!

Strength and power

Power and strength of the past will not be found here. The beginnings are there, but somehow MOONSPELL brake themselves out again and again and move consciously in calmer waters. „Common Prayers“ trumps with a dominant bass. The guitar riffing steps sometimes in the background and melodic synths determine the events. Then the vocal outburst sounds again towards the end and finished.

Reflection

The song „All Or Nothing“ is, and this is no big surprise now, also very moderate. Lovely vocals are initially accompanied by an acoustic guitar. But I must admit that I like the use with the bluesy electric guitar.It brings a little edge and coolness to the lovely appearance of this melancholic ballad. The crystal clear guitar solo in the middle section and at the end also provides enjoyable moments.

„Hermitage“

as the title track makes me sit up and take notice. Something happens and the song finally shows that MOONSPELL have not completely sworn off the old virtues. The song has a strong presence and powerful charisma. The drums hit properly through and it is considerably more guitar-heavy. The vocals appear much more energetic.

Slowed down

„Entitlement“ then ensnares the listener again with great flattering lovely vocal melodies on a cloud of melodic sounding instruments. At minute 03:43 I felt prepared for a harder progression of the song, but this expectation is not met with a sudden brutal break. This full brake is too hard for me, even if in the further course long a super played guitar solo gives pleasure.

„The Hermit Saints“ offers vocal variety and surprises next to the harsh vocals of Fernando with unusual polyphonic chorus, which knows how to please. A bombastic number with rock attitude and epic character. A great song!

Result

MOONSPELL leave the rough sea with „Hermitage“ and now sail in calmer waters. Although there are some rapids, but ultimately it remains to be said that the songs have become more delicate and fragile. Technically, everything is perfectly implemented and the production is beyond reproach. However, I can not really get along with the result in all areas, because for me the album has turned out altogether too quiet and unspectacular, even if refined moments and songs are present. The powerful beginnings or moments when the sound sometimes rears up are not present enough for me. But it has not become a bad album, just different. And I could imagine that some fans may not like it so much, but MOONSPELL win new fans with this album for it.

Metal-Heads (MH): Hi Yishai, it’s Jörg of metal-heads.de. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. And my first question is how you came up with your band name?

Tomorrow’s Rain Yishai (TR): The name came from the song „Fragile“ by Sting from his „Nothing Like The Sun“ 1988 album, the full sentence is:

„Tomorrow’s rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay“

No matter how sucessful we are dealing with our pain and heal our wounds, no matter if tomorrow will come and turn the page with it’s bright sunrise, something will stay painful within our soul, as Kreator once wrote in 1989 „Some pain will last forever“, and here we put Kreator and Sting at the same answer and took a trip down the memory lane to 1988/1989 and that’s our story…;-)

(MH): Your debut album „Hollow“ is out since 11th september. But the first appearance of Tomorrow’s Rain goes back nearly 10 years (if I’m right…). So what can you tell us about the evolving process of the band? And how old or new are the songs on „Hollow“?

(TR): I formed the band in 2002 with Maor Appelbaum (nowdays a famous mastering guy in L.A) and Guitarist Raffael Mor, i had my previous band NAIL WITHIN split up right after a debut album via Listenable Records and Maor had his previous band SLEEPLESS split up, we were both in serious crisis having to face with the lash strike of reality and shattered dream, we started to write songs and it was clear from the first tunes that it’s gonna be a reflection of our lives back than and our lives back than was far from being cool, depression, drinking, anxiety, stress and panics attacks, you name it…:-) so the music turned this way as well. We called ourselves MOONSKIN and played few shows here (opened for Epica among others) but in 2006 i got married and wanted to leave my inner demons outside my daily lives, dealing with these songs on a daily base was digging in my own wounds, it was a mistake as i learned to understand.

3 years after that i been through a painful divorce process as a young father and again i felt shattered, this time i took it differently, i called Raffael and told him „this time we make it“ so we started from zero with a new name Tomorrow’s Rain and in baby steps started to build our dream, we played with Dark Tranquillity in 2012 and tried to find a solid line up which took few years, in 2016 things became really serious and from there we went into the process of writing the record, we never write songs just to write good songs, every song needs a meaning, a true authentic story behind it, so quality over quantity was always the rule, if you consider 2002 as the start than we beat „Chinese Democracy“ as the longest album to write ever…:-) but for me things started bigtime in 2016, 2 songs are from the early days, the rest are new.

(MH): If I counted right there are ten different guest musicians (like Jeff Loomis in „Into the Mouth of Madness) playing on the album which makes it quite versatile and I really like it. But on the other hand, how much Tomorrow’s Rain is really in the songs?

(TR): it was very important to me that the SONGS will be strong and convincing by themselves, even without the guests, that’s the most important thing in an album in my opinion: strong songs, guests can spice it up and add extra value of course but the songs have to stand strong to start with. One of the most important things was to write songs and not to write riffs, look into the whole picture, the whole „story“ and not like „it’s a great riff“ kind of. I wrote all the lyrics apart from the song „Hollow“ (written by our keyboardist Shiraz Weiss) and the music was written mainly by Raffael Mor but some other band members contributed too and even some ex band members as Maor Appelbaum for example. Guests added guitar solos (Jeff and Greg) and Vocals (all the rest) but the songs were written by us long time before the guests came in. My idea with the guests was to  welcome them with open arms to our house and have each one of them to leave something from his own into our body of art, we thought about each part and gave each guest exactly the parts I thought fits him, for example in „Misery Rain“ I had almost a spoken part, telling a very personal story and everytime I sang it in the studio I thought „it will be great to have Fernando from Moonspell“ doing this part in the same vibe he did similar parts in „Wolfheart“ which is an album I really really love, so I invited Fernando and he did that part.

For Jeff Loomis we invited him for a song about Warrel Dane, Warrel was a friend of mine and in fact was supposed to produce „Hollow“ so inviting Jeff Loomis to play in this personal memorial song for his longtime friend and musical partner was a great idea, etc etc. I think you can easily recognize Greg Mackintosh special solo in „In The Corner Of A Dead End Street“ and same goes to Aaron from My Dying Bride in „Fear“, they all gave me a small part of them and for this I will thank them forever. Most of them are in fact friends that I know for many years. I knew Sakis from Rotting Christ in 1993 and always kept in touch so him and Rotting Christ are family to us. Also Anders from Draconian, Spiros from Septicflesh, Mikko from Swallow The Sun and of course Kobi from Orphaned Land are friends and we go many years back. Also Jeff Loomis even thou I knew him personally only in 2003 or 2004 I think, but it’s 17 years, time fly fast. Paradise Lost played here many times and we opened for them twice and that’s how I knew Greg personally, Aaron from My Dying Bride is in fact the only one I only knew personally around 2 years ago but I am a huge MDB fan since 1991 so he was one of the persons I always wanted to work with and have him on the album, we did all the connections via emails. But we wrote a lot to each other and not only about music so he is definitely a person I consider a friend and it’s a great respect for us as a band to have him singing with us in the album.

Tomorrow’s Rain – everything is on hold

(MH): Beside Corona… Are there any plans of playing live next year?

(TR): All shows are on hold for now of course, we were supposed to open for SAMAEL, TIAMAT, and PARASDISE LOST and ROTTING CHRIST but of course everything is on hold now because of this crazy situation, lets hope things will get back to normal again, we are really looking forward to play live, also we started to write the second album and already have 3 new songs so it will not take so many years this time.

(MH): My last question goes to your last song. A cover of Nick Cave’s Weeping Song. Who came up with this idea and why? I love the orgininal, but your version is quite good.

(TR): I came up with the idea (Yishai, Vocals) because I love Nick Cave’s music since I was around 13 years old and I felt that we can take the song to our direction and create something interesting.

Evergrey – hart und düster

Wie oben schon angedeutet ist „A Silent Arc“ für Evergrey ungewohnt hart. Aber immer unterlegt mit einer unterschwelligen, düsteren Melancholie. Perfekt eingefangen von Tom S. Englunds Gesang. Ein toller Auftakt. Schwerelos, einsam und allein in der endlosen See treibend… Das umschreibt „Weightless“, garniert mit Keyboard Klängen, die aber nicht süßlich und romantisch daher kommen, sondern hart und bedrückend. Genau passend zur Grundstimmung des Songs. Dieses düstere Grundstimmung wird auch bei „All I Have“ beibehalten, wenn es hier auch musikalisch langsamer zu Werke geht und bei dem alle Musiker ihr Können zeigen dürfen. Übrigens hervorragend und mit einer schönen Dynamik produziert. Jetzt geht es mit „A Secret Atlantis“ wieder hart weiter und man will direkt headbangen. Aber dann kam ich doch ins Stutzen. Der Fluss des Songs wird aufgebrochen, wie eben auch das Leben selbst selten geradeaus und ohne Brüche verläuft. Interessant gemacht und ein Song der mit jedem Hören weiter wächst. „The Tidal“ ist ein kurzes, instrumentales Zwischenstück, das zur zweiten Hälfte des Albums überleitet.

Evergrey – melancholisch und düster

Hart riffende Gitarren, sphärische Keyboards und eine sehr gute Gesangsleistung prägen „End Of Silence“. Das, wie schon der Titel impliziert, auf einen Neuanfang hoffen lässt. Nach Jahren des Schweigens und sich Verlierens… In „Currents“ fühlt sich der Protagonist wieder einmal alleine gelassen, illustriert durch die hier dominierenden Keyboards. Im folgenden „Departure“ darf dann der Bass den Ton angeben und neben dem Gesang und Schlagzeug gibt es dann auch nur Klavier und Akustikgitarre. Ein toller Song über das Bewusstwerden um das Ende einer Beziehung. Und so wie auch das im Leben ein Prozess ist, so gestaltet sich auch der Song, eine Expedition ins Innere. Ein maritimes Intro, harte und kalte Synthieklänge, sehnsuchtsvoller Gesang bilden in „The Beacon“ einen krassen Gegensatz zum vorherigen Lied. Eintönig sind Evergrey mit Sicherheit nicht. Abgehackte, harte Riffs markieren den Einstieg in „This Ocean“, den letzten Song der Platte. Überraschend hart lassen mich Evergrey etwas ratlos zurück. Gab es zuvor doch immer wieder Licht am Ende des Horizonts und war die Hoffnung nie verloren, so überwiegt hier die Düsternis.

Evergrey – skandinavisch und gehaltvoll

Evergrey haben mit „The Atlantic“ ein düsteres, hartes Album abgeliefert, das typisch skandinavische Melancholie geradezu verströmt. Es ist keine Platte zum mal eben nebenbei hören. Trotz aller Eingängigkeit und Melodie ist es immer noch voller progressiver Parts. Aber immer songdienlich und nie nur zum Selbstzweck. „The Atlantic“ ist eines dieser Alben, die einen mit auf eine Reise ins Innere nehmen. Das ist keine leichte Kost, aber dafür umso gehaltvoller und kann sehr lohnenswert sein. Überrascht hat mich ein wenig, wie hart Evergrey zwischendurch zu Werke gehen. Mir hat es aber sehr gut gefallen. Alte Fans werden begeistert sein und neue Fans werden Evergrey mit dieser Platte allemal gewinnen. Wer sich von dem neuen Material live überzeugen will, hat ab März dazu Gelegenheit. Denn dann sind Evergrey mit Kamelot auf Tour. Ein tolles Package und die Daten findet ihr weiter unten.

Evergreys Tom S. Englund über das Album

Hey Leute! Dies ist  Album Nummer 11! Ist das nicht einfach wahnsinnig?! Es ist auch das dritte Album, dem ein Konzept zugrunde liegt, welches nun sein Ziel gefunden haben könnte oder zumindest eine Auflösung. Vielleicht haben einige von euch es bereits kommen sehen oder erwartet. Wir haben uns durch große persönliche Probleme gekämpft und mussten auch noch einen Einbruch in unserem Studio verkraften um euch dieses Album zu bescheren. Wenn es also auch weder schmerzfrei noch einfach war, ist es in vielerlei Hinsicht auch erfüllend gewesen und unsere Kreativität wurde mit den Farben der Ehrlichkeit und Aufrichtigkeit gemalt. Dies ist unser härtestes, düsterstes und vielleicht sogar abwechslungsreichstes Album. Es ist all das, was wir komponieren wollten und die Lyrics kommen mit einer Transparenz und nie zuvor erfahrenen Klarheit. Endlich haben wir neue Ufer erreicht. Wir können es kaum erwarten euch mit auf diese Reise zu nehmen und mit uns in unsere Welt, unsere Tiefen und die Wasser von „The Atlantic“ einzutauchen.

Neue Videos und weitere News für euch

Bei SEASON OF MIST ist man stolz auf die Verkündung des neuen Signings. Man konnte aktuell einen Deal mit DEATHWHITE abschließen. Das Debüt-Album mit dem „hoffnungsfrohen“ Titel „For a black tomorrow“ ist für Anfang 2018 geplant. Man ordnet sich selber der Stilrichtung Dark Melodic Metal zu.

Hier haben wir mal einen starken Track von der „Insel“. Die britische Formation WILD LIES schraubt gerade an einem kompletten Album und jetzt gibt es schon „Heart cry“ als Vorgeschmack, der definitiv Lust auf mehr macht. Also die Scheibe muss ich in Gänze hören und auch einen Konzertbesuch kann ich mir vorstellen…es soll bald ein paar Dates in unseren Breiten geben. Das lest ihr dann bei uns…auf jeden Fall!
