KHIRKI (Facebook ) aus Griechenland sind ein junges Trio, die auf ihrem neuen Album „Κτηνωδία“ (Review ) erfrischend originelle und mitreißende Songs abrocken. Schmutziger harter Rock´Roll, der mit anatolischem Folk gewürzt ist. Somit ist KHIRKI eine sehr interessante Band, die sich daher für ein Interview bei `metal-heads.de´ empfohlen hat. Dimos Ioannou als Sänger und Gitarrist der Band hat sich als Interviewpartner zur Verfügung gestellt, damit wir und Ihr als Leser bei `metal-heads.de´ mehr von den Jungs und deren Musik erfahren könnt. Es geht um Odysseus, scharfe Paprika, heulende Wölfe und noch mehr, alles vereint im Album von KHIRKI und in diesem Interview hier bei `metal-heads.de´.

Wer sind KHIRKI?

MH: Hallo Jungs. Vielen Dank im Voraus, dass ihr den Lesern von `metal-heads.de‘ mehr über Euch und das neue Album erzählt.

Dimos Ioannou: Danke, dass ihr euch die Zeit genommen habt, unsere Musik zu hören und dieses Interview zu führen! Wir sind KHIRKI, ein Metal-Trio aus Athen, Griechenland. Wir sind gleichermaßen von Metal/Rock-Bands und Volksmusik aus dem Balkan und Anatolien beeinflusst. „Κτηνωδία“ ist unser Debütalbum und es ist seit dem 20. Mai auf Vinyl und digital heraus.

Zauberin

MH: Der Bandname KHIRKI hat eigentlich einen interessanten Bezug. Bitte erkläre unseren Lesern, woher der Name kommt und warum ihr diesen Namen gewählt habt!

D.I.: Wir sind nach der Zauberin „Circe“ aus Homers Odyssee benannt. Da sie im Griechischen „Κίρκη“ heißt und wir es lieben, wie es klingt, haben wir uns entschieden, die Band so zu nennen, damit es näher daran ist, wie es im Griechischen klingt. Im Mythos bot sie der Mannschaft von Odysseus einen magischen Wein an und verwandelte sie in Tiere.

Wir auf der anderen Seite lieben es, schnelle und erhebende Rock’n’Roll-Musik zu spielen und manchmal hat sie eine ähnliche Wirkung auf die Leute … also dachten wir, es wäre ein cooler Name, nicht nur wegen der Bedeutung, sondern weil er auch zu dem Musikstil passt, den wir mit unseren griechischen Folk-Einflüssen spielen.

Musik als Odyssee

MH: Die griechischen Legenden um ihre Götter sind die Grundlage für unzählige Bücher und Filme gewesen. Was verbindet Dich persönlich mit den alten griechischen Legenden? Wann hast Du zum ersten Mal von den alten Geschichten gehört?

D.I.: Ein Riff, einen Song, ein Album zu schreiben und es dann aufzunehmen, es zu promoten und zu touren ist in gewisser Weise eine Odyssee. Das Leben jeder Band ist eine Odyssee und diese Mythen sind bis heute stark, weil sich jeder mit ihnen identifizieren kann. Auch die Geschichte von Narziss, jetzt, wo jeder vor seinem Handy zu posieren scheint und den Leuten zeigt, wie schön und charismatisch er sich hält. Da wir aus Griechenland kommen und hier aufgewachsen sind, sind wir seit unserer Kindheit mit diesen Sagen und Geschichten vertraut.

MH: Das Album „Κτηνωδία“ ist euer Debütalbum. Seit wann gibt es die Band KHIRKI?

D.I.: Als KHIRKI gibt es uns erst seit 2019, aber wir drei spielen schon seit Jahren zusammen in einer anderen Band namens MAD JOHN THE WISE, die allerdings nicht mehr aktiv ist.
Bevor wir uns kennengelernt haben, haben wir in der Vergangenheit in Punkrock-, Folk-, Elektronik- und sogar Thrash-Metal-Bands gespielt. Wir machen schon Musik, seit wir 13-14 Jahre alt sind.

MH: Welcher ist der älteste und welcher der jüngste Song auf dem Debütalbum?

D.I.: Der älteste Song ist „Bukovo“, da wir mit ihm den Schreibprozess begonnen haben. Es war auch einer der letzten Songs, der zu 100% fertiggestellt wurde. Der jüngste oder der letzte, den wir komponiert und arrangiert haben, ist „Stara Planina“, der größte Song und auch der Schlusssong des Albums.

Griechische Feste

MH: Wie seid ihr auf die Idee gekommen, Metal mit Folk zu kombinieren?

D.I.: In Griechenland herumzureisen ist etwas, das wir jedes Jahr tun, und jede Ecke dieses Landes kommt mit einem etwas anderen Stil der Volksmusik daher. Besonders während der Sommerfestivals kann man die Kraft dieser traditionellen Lieder mit allen Sinnen erleben, man trinkt, tanzt und singt, trifft neue Leute… So ist sie in unserem Lebensstil genauso wichtig geworden wie Rock n Roll.

Es war kein Rezept für uns, es wurde nicht einmal bewusst entschieden. Als ich merkte, dass die meisten meiner Gesangsmelodien nach griechischer Volksmusik klingen und viele der Riffs und Gitarrenleads oder rhythmischen Muster auch stark davon beeinflusst sind, haben wir es einfach angenommen und uns darauf eingelassen. Wir denken gerne, dass wir auf diese Weise irgendwie einzigartig sind! Das ist unser Stil und originell zu sein ist sehr wichtig für uns.

MH: Welche traditionellen klassischen Instrumente wurden auf dem Album verwendet?

D.I.: Akustische Gitarren, Klavier, Geige und viele perkussive Instrumente wie Djembe, Tamburin und Mbelel. Wir haben auch fast eine Bouzouki aufgenommen!

Die Folkinstrumente

MH: Wer spielt (live) die klassischen Instrumente in den Songs?

D.I.: Alle diese Instrumente werden von uns gespielt, außer der Geige, die von unserem guten Freund Christos Konstantinidis gespielt wurde. Er ist ein Killer-Spieler, wie man an den beiden Tracks „Wolf’s Lament“ und „Medea“ erkennen kann. Für eine Live-Situation wird wahrscheinlich niemand diese Instrumente spielen, wir haben die Songs so arrangiert, dass sie nur von uns dreien gespielt werden können und all diese Instrumente keine wesentliche Rolle in unseren Songs spielen.

MH: Wir sind alle Freunde der harten Klänge und der Instrumente, die diese Klänge erzeugen. Aber Ihr scheint auch eine Verbindung zur traditionellen Musikwelt zu haben.
Welches ist Dein Lieblingsinstrument aus der klassischen traditionellen oder folkloristischen Musikwelt? Und warum?

D.I.: Ich würde sagen, dass die Geige mein Lieblingsinstrument ist. Sie bewegt mich, bringt mich dazu, zu singen und zu tanzen und zu trinken! Man kann etwas Erhebendes, etwas Dunkles oder Sanftes spielen und es klingt fast besser als eine Gitarre. Sogar Metal-Riffs können auf der Geige sehr interessant klingen, wenn man einen guten Spieler hat.

Bedeutung und Inhalt der Songs

MH: Die Songtitel setzen sich unter anderem aus Personen der griechischen Mythologie zusammen, aber auch bestimmte geografische Dinge spielen eine Rolle, die bereits eine gewisse Heimatverbundenheit ausdrücken. Einige Beispiele:
MEDEA ist ebenfalls eine göttliche Frauengestalt aus der griechischen Mythologie.

BUKOVO ist ein Dorf im Norden Mazedonien.

BARKHAN ist eine Wüste in Kasachstan.

STARA PLANINA steht für das Balkangebirge.

Kannst Du uns einen kleinen Überblick geben, worum es in den einzelnen Songs geht?

D.I.: Ja, natürlich!

MEDEA war eine Zauberin in der alten griechischen Mythologie, auch die Nichte von Circe! Der Song basiert auf der Geschichte von Jason und den Argonauten und wie MEDEA so rachsüchtig wurde, als Jason ihre Liebe verriet, dass sie ihre eigenen Kinder tötete. Die schlimmste Mutter aller Zeiten!
BUKOVO ist ein balkanisches Gewürz, das viel in der griechischen Küche verwendet wird. In diesem Lied geht es um manipulative Freundinnen oder Freunde, Menschen, die Ihr Sexualleben zu einem pikanten Trip machen.
THE BARKHAN DUNES spielt in den kargen Ländern des Mittleren Ostens. Es basiert lose auf dem ersten Assassin’s Creed. Ich bin ein großer Fan der Franchise!
STARA PLANINA handelt von der Zerstörung der Umwelt. In jeder Strophe gibt es ein Monster aus der Balkan-Folklore und den Märchen, das als Opfer auftritt; was bedeutet, dass selbst die schrecklichsten Kreaturen machtlos sind gegen das, was die Menschheit diesem Planeten antun kann.

Einsamer Wolf

MH: „Wolf’s Lament“ sticht heraus, weil es sehr ruhig und melancholisch beginnt und sich später in einen schweren, dunklen Song verwandelt. Worum geht es in diesem Song?

D.I.: „Wolf’s Lament“ handelt von der Thematik, sich von jemandem zu trennen oder sich auf eine ehrenvolle Art und Weise von jemandem zu trennen. Es ist ein Lamento, eine Ballade, die sich mit der einzigartigen Einsamkeit der Trauer beschäftigt. Wie ein einsamer Wolf trauert jemand wirklich, wenn er allein ist.

LIVE-Erfahrungen

MH: Wurden alle Songs des Albums schon live gespielt? Wie waren die Reaktionen bis jetzt?
Hatten die Fans irgendwelche besonderen Lieblingssongs

D.I.: Wir haben es geschafft, eine Show zu spielen, kurz bevor diese Pandemie begann. Wir haben all diese Songs gespielt, außer Stara Planina. Die Leute liebten „Raging Bull“, „Medea“ und „Wolf’s Lament“ sofort! Jetzt, wo die Platte herauskommt, hoffen wir, dass die Leute sie alle lieben werden.

MH: Wenn ihr ein Konzert vor 10.000 Fans spielen könntet? Was wäre eure Traumlocation?

D.I.: Wir können es kaum erwarten, auf die Bühne zurückzukehren, egal ob wir vor 100, 1000 oder 10000 Fans spielen! Einige Traumlocations wären Festivals wie das Wacken Open Air in Deutschland oder das Rockwave Festival in Malakasa in Griechenland!

KHIRKI (Facebook ) from Greece are a young trio rocking refreshingly original and infectious songs on their new album „Κτηνωδία„(Review ). Dirty hard rock’roll spiced with Anatolian folk. Thus KHIRKI is a very interesting band, which therefore recommended itself for an interview at ‚metal-heads.de‘. Dimos Ioannou as the singer and guitarist of the band has made himself available as an interview partner, so that we and you as readers at `metal-heads.de‘ can learn more about these guys and their music. It’s about Ulysses, hot peppers, howling wolves and even more, all combined in the album of KHIRKI and in this interview here at `metal-heads.de´.

Who are KHIRKI?

MH: Hello Dimos. Thanks in advance for telling the readers of `metal-heads.de‘ more about KHIRKI and the new album.

Dimos Ioannou: Thank you for taking the take to listen to our music and for doing this interview! We are Khirki, a metal trio from Athens, Greece. We are equally influenced by metal/rock bands and folk music from the Balkans and Anatolia. Κτηνωδία is our debut album and it is out on vinyl since May 20^th.

Sorceress „Circe“

MH: The band name KHIRKI actually has an interesting reference. Please explain to our readers where the name comes from and why you chose this name!

D.I.: We are named after the sorceress „Circe“ from Homer’s Odyssey. Since in Greek she is called „Κίρκη” and we love the way it sounds, we chose to name the band this way so it is closer to how it sounds in Greek. In the myth she offered Ulysses’ crew a magical wine and transformed them into animals.

Us on the other hand, we love to play fast and uplifting rock n roll music and sometimes it has a similar effect to people … so we thought it would be a cool name not only for the meaning but since it also fits the style of music that we play with our Greek folk influences.

Music as an odyssey

MH: The Greek legends around their gods have been the basis for countless books and movies. What connects you personally with the old Greek legends? When did you hear about the old stories for the first time?

D.I.: Writing a riff, a song, an album and then recording it, promoting it and touring it is an Odyssey in a sense. The life of any band is an Odyssey and these myths are potent to this day because everybody can relate to them. The tale of Narcissus also, now that everybody seems to pose in front of their phones showing  people how beautiful and charismatic they think they are.  Since we are from Greece and we grew up here we ‚ve been familiar with these tales and stories since childhood.

MH : The album „Κτηνωδία“ is your debut album. Since when does the band KHIRKI exist?

D.I.: As Khirki we have been around since 2019 but the three of us have been playing together for years in a different band called MAD JOHN THE VICE that is not active any more. Before we met each other we have played in punk rock, folk, electronic and even thrash metal bands in the past. We ‘ve been playing music since we were 13-14 years old.

MH: Which is the oldest and which is the youngest song on the debut album?

D.I.: The oldest song is „Bukovo“ since it is the one we started the writing process with. It was also one of the last songs to be completed 100%. The youngest or the last one that we composed and arranged is „Stara Planina“, the biggest song and also the closing track of the album.

Greek festivities

MH: How did you come up with the idea of combining metal with folk?

D.I.: Travelling around Greece is something we do every year and every corner of this country comes with a slightly different style of folk music. During summer festivals especially you get to experience the power of these traditional songs with all your senses as you drink, you dance and sing, you meet new people… So it has become as important in our lifestyle as rock n roll.

It was not a recipe for us, it was not even consciously decided. When I realised that most of my vocal melodies sound like Greek folk music and many of the riffs and guitar leads or rhythmic patterns are also heavily influenced by it, we just embraced it and went for it. We like to think that we are kind of unique that way, this is our style and being original is very important for us.

The folk instruments

MH: What traditional classical instruments were used on the album?

D.I.: Acoustic guitars, piano, violin and many percussive instruments like Djembe, tamburine and Mbelel. We almost recorded a bouzouki too!

MH: Who plays (live) the classical instruments in the songs?

D.I.: All these instruments are played by us except for the violin, that was played by our good friend Christos Konstantinidis. He is a killer player as you can tell from the two tracks he is featured on „Wolf’s Lament“ and „Medea“. For a live situation probably no one will play those instruments, we have arranged the songs in such way that they can be performed by just the three of us and all these instruments do not play an integral role in our songs.

MH: We are all friends of the hard sounds and the instruments that create those sounds. But you also seem to have a connection to the traditional music world.

What is your favorite instrument from the classical traditional or folkloric music world? And why?

D.I.: I’d have to say that violin is my favorite. It moves me, makes me wanna sing and dance and drink! You can play something uplifting, something dark or mellow and it almost sounds better than a guitar. Even metal riffs can sound very interesting on violin on the shoulder of a good player.

Meaning and content of the songs

MH: The song titles are composed of people from Greek mythology, among other things, but specific geographical things also play a role, which already express a certain connection to your homeland. Some examples:

MEDEA is also a divine female figure from Greek mythology.

BUKOVO is a village in northern Macedonia.

BARKHAN is a desert in Kazakhstan.

STARA PLANINA stands for the Balkan Mountains.

Can you give us a little overview of what each song is about?

D.I.: Yes of course.

MEDEA was a sorceress in ancient Greek mythology, also the niece of Circe! The song is based on the tale of Jason and the Argonauts and how Medea got so revengefull when Jason betrayed her love that she killed their own children. Worst mom ever!

BUKOVO is a balkan spice, used a lot in Greek cuisine. This song is about manipulative girlfriends or boyfriends, people that make your sexual life a spicy trip.

THE BARKHAN DUNES takes place in the barren lands of the middle-east. It is loosely based on the first Assassin’s Creed. I’m a huge fan of the franchise!

STARA PLANINA deals with the destruction of the environment. In every verse there is a monster from the Balkan folklore and fairy tales that appears as a victim; meaning that even the most horrifying creatures are powerless to what mankind can do to this planet.

Lonesome wolf

MH: „Wolf’s Lament“ stands out because it starts very calm and melancholic and later turns into a heavy dark song.

What is this song about?

D.I.: „Wolf’s lament“ deals with the subject matter of breaking up or parting ways with someone in an honorable manner. It is a lament, a ballad dedicated to the unique loneliness of grief. Just like a lone wolf, someone grieves truly when he is alone.

LIVE experiences

MH: Have all the songs on the album been played live yet? How have the reactions been so far? Did the fans have any particular favorites?

D.I.: We have managed to play one show right before this pandemic started. We played all these songs except for Stara Planina. People loved „Raging Bull“, „Medea“ and „Wolf’s Lament“ instantly! Now that the record comes out we hope that people will love all of them.

MH: If you could play a concert in front of 10.000 fans? What would be your dream location?

D.I.: We can’t wait to return on stage, whether it’s playing in front of 100, 1000, or 10000 fans! Some dream locations for the latter are festivals, like the Wacken Open Air in Germany, or the Rockwave festival in Malakasa, Greece!

Punk-Metal-Folk-Rock´n Roll

Tja, das sind ziemlich viele Begriffe für die Beschreibung des Musikstils von der Band KHIRKI (Facebook ) aus Griechenland. Aber all das findet sich nun mal in deren Musik wieder. Davon könnt Ihr Euch am 20. Mai überzeugen, denn dann kommt ganz frisch aus dem Olymp ihr Debütalbum „Κτηνωδία“ (Übersetzung: Bestie, Tier). Ich hatte vor kurzem EWIG FROST (Facebook, Review ) aus Österreich mit einem ungewöhnlichen Album auf dem Plattenteller und nun überraschen

KHIRKI

ebenfalls mit einem nicht alltäglichen Sound. Na, schon neugierig geworden? Ich hoffe doch, denn auch KHIRKI schaffen es mit coolen Ideen langweiligen Staub hinwegzufegen. Der Sound lässt gewisse Eindrücke an die Band KVELERTAK aufkommen.

Der Bandname KHIRKI leitet sich übrigens von der Zauberin und Göttin Kirke (Tochter des Sonnengottes Helios) ab, die seinerzeit versuchte Odysseus für sich zu gewinnen, indem sie ihn mit allen Künsten der Verführung becircte. (Daher auch das allgemein gebräuchliche Wort!) Sie hatte außerdem eine eigene Insel und verwandelte fast jeden Menschen, der diese betrat, in ein Tier.

Tierisch ab geht es

ebenfalls mit dem Opener „Deadpan“ auf dem Debütalbum von KHIRKI. Man setzt auf flotten Rock´n Roll und startet mit viel göttlichem Punkfeuer im Arsch. Schon hier merkt man den Mannen ihre erfrischende Spielfreude an. Ohne an Energie zu verlieren nimmt man das Tempo nach zwei Minuten raus, um mit frickeligem Gitarrenspiel und fettem Bass-Groove ordentlich einzuheizen. Oder es ertönen mal ganz unverblümt Tribal Drums. Das rockt! Geiler Einstieg! Ich bin heiß und weiter geht´s!

„Black & Chrome“

setzt direkt mit erdigen Riffs das richtige Fundament für diese stimmungsvolle Rock´n Roll Adrenalinspritze. Die Röhre von Sänger Dimos stachelt den Sound mit viel Schmackes an. Und mir fällt immer wieder neben der geilen Gitarrenarbeit immer wieder der treibende und hervorstechende Bass auf, der so verdammt hart und geil groovt. Das passt hervorragend zum wilden energischen Drumming. KHIRKI machen echt Stimmung und rocken was das Zeug hält. Dabei verpassen sie ihren Songs immer andere Vibes ohne das Grundthema aus den Ohren zu verlieren. Man könnte es schon fast als progressiv bezeichnen. Jedenfalls werden die Songs nicht einfach so stumpf durchgebolzt.

Besinnliche ruhige Momente

gönnen uns KHIRKI hin und wieder in der wilden Göttersause. Zum Glück langweilen diese Momente nicht. Es sind allesamt sehr besondere Songs auf dem Album. Einer davon ist „Medea“! Er ist überragend! Er beginnt so schön chillig, steigt aber dann plötzlich mit Tribal Drums ein, die sich in ihrer Intensität steigern. Es gesellen sich mächtige Bassschwingungen dazu und ehe man sich versieht, entwickelt sich der Song zu einer feurigen anatolischen Folklore-Rock-Granate. Traditionelle Streichinstrumente geben dem Song den letzten Schliff. Absoluter Hammer!

Ich bin jedenfalls spätestens jetzt total becirct und die Mucke haut mich aus den Socken. Hätten die Sirenen bei Odysseus solche Mucke gespielt, wäre er mit Freude im Herzen und einem Lächeln im Gesicht schnurstracks in die Klippen geschippert. Da hätten auch die Ohrenstöpsel nix genutzt!

Ganz klassisch

mit Akustikgitarre, sanftem Gesang und melancholischen Violinen verführt mich die anfängliche balladenartige Komposition bei dem Song „Wolf´s Lament“, die mich wirklich erdet. Beeindruckend ist hier auch wieder einmal die fließende Steigerung der Intensität, wenn der Song nach und nach an Kraft gewinnt. Dabei wandelt sich der Song von einer sanftem melancholischen Ballade über eine erhabene Härte zu einem schweren Brocken. Diesen Song muss man auf sich wirken lassen.

Den krassen Gegensatz

zünden KHIRKI mit dem Song „Bukovo“, der abgeht wie Götterbote Hermes auf Düsenschlappen. (Bukovo ist nebenbei bemerkt eine Stadt in Nordmazedonien und dort gibt es ganz erlesene aromatische Paprika.) Die Musik von KHIRKI besitzt auch eine ganz besondere Würze, die mit scharfen Aromen einen außergewöhnlichen Genuss bereitet.

Fazit

KHIRKI haben mit „Κτηνωδία“ ein herausragendes Debütalbum. Das Album verbindet traditionelle Folklore mit heißem schmutzigem Rock´n Roll und diese originelle Symbiose ist verdammt mitreißend. Die Songs strotzen nur so vor frischer brennender Energie, die das musikalische Herz in Flammen setzt. Wenn die Songs live ebenso rübergebracht werden, dann brennt die Hütte.

Punk-Metal-Folk-Rock´n Roll

Well, that’s quite a lot of terms to describe the musical style of the band KHIRKI (Facebook ) from Greece. But all this can be found in their music. You can convince yourself of this on May 20, because then their debut album „Κτηνωδία“ (translation: beast, animal) comes fresh from Olympus. I recently had EWIG FROST (Facebook, Review ) from Austria with an unusual album on the turntable.

KHIRKI also surprise with a not everyday sound. Well, already curious? I hope so, because KHIRKI also succeed in sweeping away boring dust with cool ideas. The sound gives certain impressions of the band KVELERTAK.

The band name KHIRKI, by the way, is derived from the sorceress and goddess Kirke (daughter of the sun god Helios), who at the time tried to win Odysseus over by bewitching him with all the arts of seduction. She also had her own island and turned almost every person who entered it into an animal.

Beastly it goes

also with the opener „Deadpan“ on the debut album of KHIRKI. They rely on brisk rock’n roll and start with a lot of divine punk fire in the ass. Already here you can notice the men’s refreshing joy of playing. Without losing energy, they take the tempo out after two minutes to heat up with fiddly guitar playing and fat bass groove. Cool tribal drums can also be heard. That rocks! Great start! I’m hot and here we go!

„Black & Chrome“

sets directly with dirty riffs the right foundation for this atmospheric rock’n roll adrenaline injection. The tube of singer Dimos spikes the sound with a lot of smack. And I always notice, besides the awesome guitar work, the driving and prominent bass that grooves so damn hard and awesome. This fits perfectly with the wild energetic drumming. KHIRKI really set the mood and rock the hell out. They always give their songs different vibes without losing the basic theme from their ears. You could almost call it progressive. Anyway, the songs are not just bluntly bolted through.

Contemplative quiet moments

KHIRKI treat us now and then in the wild gods‘ frenzy. Fortunately, these moments do not bore. They are all very special songs on the album. One of them is „Medea!“ Outstanding song! It starts off so nice and chill, but then suddenly kicks in with tribal drums that build in intensity. It is joined by powerful bass vibrations and before you know it, the song evolves into a fiery Anatolian folk rock grenade. Traditional string instruments give the song the final touch. Absolute hammer!

In any case, I’m totally bewitched by now and the music pulls me out of my shoes. If the sirens had played such music to Odysseus, he would have sailed straight into the cliffs with joy in his heart and a smile on his face. Even the earplugs would have been of no use!

Quite classic

with acoustic guitar, soft vocals and melancholic violins seduces me the initial ballad-like composition on the song „Wolf’s Lament“, which really grounds me.
