Nach „The Thirteen Years of Nero“ im Jahr 2021 bei Napalm Records kommt nach einem Label-Wechsel nun die EP „Year Of The Four Emperors“. Auch die düsteren Blastbeatparts machen was her.

THY KINGDOM WILL BURN tun genau das!

Denn so entstehen immer wieder neue Hörerfahrungen.

Was bieten uns DROWN IN SULPHUR nun auf ihrem neuen Werk?

„Inferno“). Uneingeschränkt empfehlenswert! (9 von 10 Punkten)

THE HALO EFFECT (Facebook) are very well known and popular in the scene. With their second album, the band once again delivers songs that are of impeccable quality. Their interpretation of modern melodic death metal is always worth a listen. There are no surprises on the new album and they remain true to their sound of the debut. From moderate performances to hard-hitting bangers, everything is represented. Everything is embellished with fine details and provides best entertainment. „Our Channel To The Darkness“, for example, is a nasty monster that only reveals itself after a harmless beginning. A song with many faces. Overall, the songs are not dissimilar to the sound of the legendary „Dark Tranquillity“, which comes to mind especially with songs like „Forever Astray“ or „Between Directions“ with its clean vocal parts. „March Of The Unheard“ doesn’t show any weakness and delivers flawless music. (8.5 out of 10 points)

EX DEO are synonymous with symphonic melodic death metal. The album „Caligvula“ (2013) was an outstanding album for me and it still inspires me. The follow-up albums were also very impressive. After „The Thirteen Years of Nero“ in 2021 on Napalm Records, the EP „Year Of The Four Emperors“ is now coming after a label change to RPM Music. As usual, the sound piles up gigantically and monumental mountains of sound rise up. The opener „Galba“ introduces the story appropriately, but doesn’t really knock my socks off yet, but that changes with the second song „Otho“. I like it more because I find the song structure more dynamic and harmonious. The dark blastbeat parts are also quite impressive. „Vitellius“ is also great. Of course it has its powerful parts, but the song also has more reduced moments in combination with different moods. The briskly marching „Vespasian“ rounds off the short journey in a fitting manner. EX DEO deliver really well again. (8.5 out of 10 points)

The band THY KINGDOM WILL BURN (Facebook) comes from Finland and „The Loss And Redemption“ is their third album. And it’s really something to be heard. Sami Kujala characterizes the sound with his extreme vocals, but the vocals are quite versatile. They also make use of clean vocals, which you can hear for the first time on the second song „Obscure Existence“. Overall, the sound is epic, which is sometimes intensified with matching keys. There are also lots of melodic guitar leads that sound fantastic. Despite this, the sound is hard and powerful. The highly energetic song „Martyrs Of Killing Floor“ should serve as a tip for playing.

Otherwise, the songs offer a wealth of different impressions. There is always something new to discover. „Forever In Dark“ is also a wonderful song with a really strong combination of different vocal elements. In addition to the extreme vocals, there are narrative parts and great clean vocal parts. I think it’s brilliantly realized! I think it’s good when you don’t always use the same concept vocally. THY KINGDOM WILL BURN do exactly that! They rely on variance, and not just in the vocal presentation. This keeps the tension up and the entertainment value high. The songs all have a very characteristic touch without leaving the basic musical path. It’s also great when they go to the extreme and push forward with tremendous energy, such as on „The End Of Times“. I feel very entertained! A really great album! (9.5 out of 10 points)

KOSMOGONIA (Facebook) hail from Greece and are honoring us with their album „Aella“. The album was completely self-financed without a label behind it. The first thing I noticed was the powerful, rich production. You can’t complain about that. Vocally, they rely on the tried and tested mix of male growls and female clean vocals, whereby the female vocals have a greater share. The flute plays the main role here as a folkloristic element. It is included throughout the songs.

The flute is joined by some symphonic accents and harmonious keys to generate even more atmospheric depth. All in all, the band manages to create a gripping sound with all the ingredients, which sometimes swings back and forth between melodic death metal and power metal, on the one hand playing with crisp heaviness, but on the other hand inviting you to dream. Personally, I would have liked more presence of the heavier variety. But those who feel comfortable in both worlds will enjoy the album. (7.5 out of 10 points)

The Polish band PATRIARKH (Facebook) celebrate opulent black metal theater on their new album „ПРОРОК ИЛИЯ“. They play less in the classic black metal guise, but take a much more melodic approach and rely on a lot of atmospheric sacred elements, some of which drift into epic or mystical realms with religious insignia. This is quite extravagant and might not appeal to every black metal fan. But there’s no denying the appeal of the sound. I even felt a certain meditative effect when listening to it.

PATRIARKH also incorporate folkloristic elements, which adds a special flair. The clean female vocals and the choirs are certainly not typical for black metal, but they create a unique atmosphere. So it has to be said that PATRIARKH cross genre boundaries here. And why not? Because this always creates new listening experiences. So the album „ПРОРОК ИЛИЯ“ can certainly be described as unusual, but it has its appeal. (8 out of 10 points)

According to the press release, the album is based on a true story that took place in Podlasie, the band’s home region, more precisely in the village of Grzybowszczyzna, in the 1930s and 40s. The album takes listeners into the world of Eliasz Klimowicz, the eponymous prophet Ilja. Klimowicz, originally a simple farmer, later became the leader and prophet of the orthodox Grzybowska sect, which was active until the 1960s. At its center was the cult of the self-proclaimed prophet.

DROWN IN SULPHUR come from Italy and released their last album „Dark Secrets Of The Soul“ a year ago on the label ‚Scarlet Records‘. Now they are already coming around the corner with their next album „Vengeance“. However, they decided to part ways with the label last year in order to give their musical creativity free rein. Statements like this always make me wonder to what extent labels have an influence on the musical development of their bands, especially with the really big labels. But well… it is what it is. What do DROWN IN SULPHUR offer us on their new album?

I really like the last album and I appreciated the versatility of the sound (Review). Will the sound have changed now? Basically nothing, of course. The biggest difference to the predecessor is the omission of a ballad. DROWN IN SULPHUR have kept their typical trademarks and enrich their deathcore with different ingredients. It certainly doesn’t get monotonous. There are really hard bangers that make short work of everything, but there are also songs that are a little more moderate. Besides all the heaviness, the songs are packed with melodic riffs. I’m also pleased that they still play some guitar solos (e.g. „Seed Of Hate“ or „Silence“) and the sometimes crazy breakdowns are really great (e.g. „Inferno“). Highly recommended! (9 out of 10 points)

Also mal schön weiter zum ersten Song „Eclipse Of The Sun Of Eden“.

„Buried By Snow And Hail“

Wow!

Fazit

DROWN IN SULPHUR zelebrieren mit „The Dark Secrets Of The Soul“ eine sehr beeindruckende schwarze Messe.

Release: 12.01.2023

DROWN IN SULPHUR (Facebook) play in very sinister realms for a band from sunny Italy and are now darkening the sun with their album „Dark Secrets Ot The Soul“.

The intro „Adveniat Regnum Tuum“ („Thy kingdom come!“) is a bit disturbing and I can’t really get into it. It sounds like an original sound recording of some creepy thing. So let’s move on to the first song „Eclipse Of The Sun Of Eden“. It starts ominously, but soon disaster rains down from the sky in the form of pattering blast beats. The dark rumbling thunder comes over you in the form of singer Chris Lombardo. Powerful breakdowns are coming in too. They don’t shy away from orchestral sounds to add even more bombast to the sound.

„Buried By Snow And Hail“

offers even more melodic subtleties. The lead guitar does a good job here. In any case, DROWN IN SULPHUR manage to dose the sound in such a way that you’re not beaten down throughout. This enhances the atmosphere! In addition to the melodic leads, you can also enjoy beautiful guitar solos. This is not standard in this genre, but I like it very much.

This is followed by a barbaric eclipse with „Unholy Light“. No mercy will be shown to you here, only brute disaster will befall you. A really nasty monster! Now that you’ve been musically gutted, you need a little dark healing.

The ballad „Lotus“

I could hardly believe it, but there is a ballad on this album. A ballad full of dark beauty, which offers a surprising but thoroughly coherent and interesting experience. Reduced to the essentials, the black oasis opens up. A clean guitar and Chris‘ voice initially create a relaxed atmosphere, but slowly but surely the intensity increases. The instrumentation and vocals become heavier. Then it builds up to a great chorus. The interplay of moods is wonderfully orchestrated and an epic guitar solo will also inspire you. This definitely makes them stand out from the crowd.

Wow! The awesome dark ballad is followed by the title track „Dark Secrets Of The Soul“ and the transition is well made. The song doesn’t come with the hammer of death at once, but first introduces the action with spherical synths and clean guitar. After a huge epic sequence, the hammer of death finally comes to life and smashes mightily. But these epic moments are allowed to rise again and again. And once again a brilliant solo is revealed. Awesome!

„Say My Name“ holds back on the tempo, but still scores with a strong rhythm that doesn’t lack vehemence. The interlude „Vampire Communion“ is followed by the final track „Shadow Of The Dark Throne“. And with this one, DROWN IN SULPHUR once again celebrate the dark shadow arts to perfection. Dark growls and nasty screams go hand in hand here. Orchestral synths increase the epic factor once again. The guitar work on the massive riffing and melodic leads is again first class. A devilish breakdown and the subsequent solo are also delivered.

Conclusion

DROWN IN SULPHUR celebrate a more than impressive black mass with „The Dark Secrets Of The Soul“. The verses are smashed hard and mercilessly into your heads. In doing so, they create an imposing presence with an epic vein. This exciting mass of black arts will captivate you for the entire time and leave you with a deep black enthusiasm.
