HALLS OF OBLIVION (Facebook, Homepage) konnten bei mir bereits mit ihrem Debütalbum „Endtime Poetry“ und ihrer EP „…of hate and despair“ sehr gut punkten. Daher war ich sehr gespannt, was die Band aus Stuttgart diesmal offenbaren würde.

Qualitativ anspruchsvoll waren sie schon seit ihrem Debütalbum und daran ändert sich logischerweise auch nichts. Nach wie vor präsentieren sich hier alle in Höchstform. Eine Entwicklung ist natürlich auszumachen. Alles wirkt in sich harmonischer, aber gleichzeitig noch brachialer. Die Mischung aus gnadenlosen Attacken bis hin zu feinen doomigen Passagen formt ein melancholisches Schauspiel, dass durchaus fasziniert.

So wird das Album mit sphärischen Keys und schönen Pianoklängen eingeleitet und man gerät schon ins Träumen, doch dann bricht das schwarze Unwetter über Euch zusammen. Am Ende umgarnt Euch wieder ein zarter und geleitet Euch in den folgenden Song.

Die ausgeprägte Gitarrenarbeit mit ihren ausladenden Solos und melodischen Leads ist immerzu präsent. Hier wird nicht stumpf darauflosgeballert. HALLS OF OBLIVION praktizieren einen vitalen Sound, der voller Tempiwechsel ist und wie bereits erwähnt auch ruhigere stimmungsvolle Momente enthüllt, wo Akustikgitarren, Piano und andere Elemente die Atmosphäre prägen.

Völlig überzeugend!

Soviel kann man schon mal festhalten. Ich würde mir aber ein wenig mehr Variation bei den Vocals wünschen. Hier und da schimmern gesangliche Variationen hervor, aber größtenteils fahren die extremen Vocals die gleiche Schiene. Die werden von Sebastian wie immer erbarmungslos hart und brutal geschmettert. Daran gibt’s nix zu mäkeln.

Aber ich persönlich mag hier und da ein wenig Abwechslung. Wenn ich an Songs wie „Last Glance Of The Sun“ oder „Walking Dead“ vom Debütalbum denke, dann muss ich gestehen, dass ich diesen Kontrast zwischen cleanen (damals Gastsänger Timo Fielker) und den extremen Vocals als sehr schön gelöst empfunden habe. Sogar die akkustische Version von „Walking Dead“ auf der EP hatte es mir sehr angetan.

Ansatzweise blitzen solche Vocals bei „Buried By The Blackest Sand“ auf, die dadurch direkt neue Nuancen im Sound erschaffen. Hört mal rein!

Beim Song „In The Absence Of Light“ kommen die cleanen Vocals noch deutlicher zum tragen und ich finde, dass es nach wie vor eine Bereicherung für den Sound darstellt. Denn es klingt wundervoll und bringt eine tolle andere emotionale Note in die Musik. Daher ist dies auch mein Lieblinssong auf dem Album, weil er zeigt, was bei HALLS OF OBLIVION alles möglich ist. Ansonsten könnte ich mir starke Chöre ebenfalls im Sound gut vorstellen. Dies würde der Individualität einzelner Songs zugute kommen und mehr herausstellen. Denn der Wiedererkennungseffekt einzelner Songs fehlt mir trotz der einwandfreien Qualität. Das ist ohne Frage meinem persönlichen Geschmack geschuldet und sind lediglich Kleinigkeiten. Daher gelange ich zu folgendem

Fazit.

HALLS OF OBLIVION beweisen mit „Eighteen Hundred And Froze To Death“ wieder einmal, dass sie wahre Meister des Black Metal sind. Die Songs wirken nun noch homogener, bieten aber trotzdem die gewohnte Vehemenz. Das Schauspiel mit den kontrastierenden Elementen funktioniert tadellos. Wütende Stürme fegen über melancholische Landschaften, die zwischendurch in ruhigen Phasen sogar träumerische Eindrücke entstehen lassen. Bei HALLS OF OBLIVION gibt es immer auch Licht in der Dunkelheit, ein Funken Hoffnung. „Eighteen Hundred And Froze To Death“ ist ohne Zweifel eindrucksvoll und absolut empfehlenswert.

HALLS OF OBLIVION (Facebook, Homepage) could already convince me with their debut album „Endtime Poetry“ and later with their EP „…of hate and despair“. Therefore I was very curious what the band from Stuttgart would reveal this time.

Qualitatively demanding they were already since their debut album and logically this does not change. As before, all present themselves here in top form. A development is of course discernible. Everything seems more harmonious, but at the same time even more brute. The mixture of merciless attacks to fine doomy passages forms a melancholic spectacle that is quite fascinating.

So the album is introduced with spherical keys and beautiful piano sounds and you already start dreaming, but then the black storm breaks over you. At the end, a tender tones ensnare you again and lead you into the following song.

The distinctive guitar work with its sweeping solos and melodic leads is always present. Here is no bluntly shooting. HALLS OF OBLIVION practice a vital sound that is full of tempo changes and, as already mentioned, also reveals quieter atmospheric moments where acoustic guitars, piano and other elements shape the atmosphere.

Completely convincing!

That’s for sure! But I would wish for a little more variation in the vocals. Here and there vocal variations shimmer out, but for the most part the extreme vocals sound in a similar way. As always, they are mercilessly and brutally belted by Sebastian. There’s nothing to complain about.

But I personally like a little variety here and there. When I think of songs like „Last Glance Of The Sun“ or „Walking Dead“ from the debut album, I have to admit that I found this contrast between clean (then guest vocalist Timo Fielker) and the extreme vocals very nicely solved. Even the acoustic version of „Walking Dead“ on the EP really appealed to me.

At first, such vocals flash up on „Buried By The Blackest Sand“, which directly create new nuances in the sound. Listen to it!

On the song „In The Absence Of Light“ the clean vocals still come through clearly and I think it is still an enrichment for the sound. Because it sounds wonderful and brings a great other emotional note in the music. Therefore, this is also my favorite song on the album, because it shows what is possible with HALLS OF OBLIVION. Otherwise, I could imagine strong choirs also well in the sound. This would benefit the individuality of individual songs and highlight more. Because the recognition effect of individual songs is missing to me despite the impeccable quality. This is without question due to my personal taste and are merely minor details. Therefore I come to the following

conclusion.

HALLS OF OBLIVION prove with „Eighteen Hundred And Froze To Death“ once again that they are true masters of Black Metal. The songs now seem even more homogeneous, but still offer the usual vehemence. The spectacle with the contrasting elements works flawlessly. Angry storms sweep over melancholic landscapes, which in between in quiet phases even give rise to dreamy impressions. With HALLS OF OBLIVION there is always light in the darkness, a spark of hope. „Eighteen Hundred And Froze To Death“ is without a doubt impressive and absolutely recommendable.
