Auf diese Frage zu ihrem 1998 erschienenen Hard Dance Piece hatte „Scooter-“ Frontmann H.P. Baxxter dereinst geantwortet:

“ Wir haben den Fisch für das Aquarium in unserem Studio gekauft. Aber dort war es einfach zu laut für ihn. Jetzt lebt er auf einem Gnadenhof auf dem Land. Wir haben immer noch engen Kontakt und sind so etwas wie Brieffreunde geworden. Und zum Preis: er hat 3,80 € gekostet.“

Mich trieb die besagte Frage bereits 8 Jahre zuvor, nämlich im Jahr 1990, anlässlich meines Konzertbesuchs in der Live Music Hall in Köln um. Denn 10 Jahre vor der Aussage des Scooter-Frontmanns – wir schreiben den Monat September im Jahr 1988 – war Fish, der auch wegen seines Wiedererkennungswerts eine prägende Stimme des Prog-Rock der 80´er war, bei MARILLION ausgestiegen.

Die Sinnfrage: Steve Hogarth oder Fish?

Mit Spannung erwarteten die Fans von MARILLION daher nach dem Wechsel des Sängers im Jahr 1990 die Performance des neuen Frontmanns Steve Hogarth. Insbsondere auch hinsichtlich des seinerzeit oft im Radio (hörten wir damals, wir hatten ja sonst nix) gespielten „Kayleigh“ oder der Up-Tempo-Nummern „Market Square Heroes“ und „Incommunicado.“ Steve, zuvor Keyboarder der New-Wave-Band THE EUROPEANS, gab MARILLION nun einen neuen, die Bandperformance prägenden Gesangsstil, der auch durch seine Atemtechnik bedingt ist. Seine Gesangslinien klingen oft ätherisch, manchmal auch nur dahingehaucht.

MARILLION abseits vom Mainstream

Die damals gegensätzlichen Meinungen „Wir wollen unseren alten Fish zurück“ und „der stinkt doch längst“ geben kaum Anlass, an eine umfassende, anhaltende Zuneigung der Fans zu glauben. Aber die treue Fangemeinde hat in den bald 40 Jahren des Bandbestehens den weiten Weg von den „All Time Second Best Genesis“ in die Kommerzialisierung und den weiten Weg abseits vom Mainstream begleitet.

F.E.A.R. als bestes Prog-Album der letzten 20 Jahre

MARILLION haben in jeder Dekade ein herausragendes Album veröffentlicht. In den 80´er Jahren war dies „Misplaced Childhood,“ in den 90´ern „Brave,“ im darauffolgenden Jahrzehnt „Marbles“ und nun halt ihr aktuelles Album „F.E.A.R.“ (Fuck Everyone And Run). F.E.A.R. wurde von den Kritikern zum besten Prog-Album der letzten 20 Jahre gekürt. MARILLION scheinen sich an ihrem kreativen Höhepunkt zu befinden und kommen dazu ab November auf der Theatre Tour 2018 in die besten Häuser Deutschlands. Von den Prog-Legenden darf ein Feuerwerk aus Sound, Licht und Video erwartet werden, mit dem MARILLION ihrem Ausnahmestatus sicherlich wieder gerecht werden.

Im Essener Colosseum-Theater werden wir dieses Konzert-Highlight genießen und hierüber für euch in Wort und Bild berichten. Nachdem der 25. November schnell ausverkauft war, gibt es jetzt noch Karten für die Zusatzshow am Montag, den 26. November. MARILLION Monday Rocks!

I definitely feel there’s a change in the sound of the band on this record, more so than in the past. Our goal was to go in and kind of shake things up on this record. This is our ninth or tenth album — I don’t even know now — and we just wanted to kind of go in there and freak it. So when we were picking producers, we wanted to go outside the box, so we picked these two young, up-and-coming producers from Los Angeles Nick [Nicholas ‚Ras‘ Furlong] and Colin [‚Doc‘ Brittain], and got in the studio with these guys. And, you know, they’re young — they’re, like, I guess in their late 20s, so they’re kind of like the younger bucks in the scene. Yeah, they were, like, ‚Yo, dude, we grew up on listening to P-ROACH, so we know what you guys are about. And let’s shake it up.‘ And so we went in. We started cutting tracks and then I just started rapping on a bunch of the tracks again and kind of bringing some of that old-school sound back mixed with where we have evolved to as a band. And so it sounds like if our first album, [2000’s] ‚Infest‘, had a baby with our third album, [2004’s] ‚Getting Away With Murder‘, and had a baby in 2016.

Was für ein Paukenschlag von Papa Roach! Am 1. November veröffentlichten die Kakalaken die neue erste Single aus dem kommenden Album. „Crooked Teeth“, so der Name des neuen Songs, wird die Old School-Fans besonders freuen. Irgendwo zwischen „Lovehatetragedy“ und „Getting Away with Murder“ schlägt das gute Teil mächtig ein und macht Lust auf mehr. Wann jedoch das neue Album erscheinen wird, bleibt abzuwarten.
