HEATHEN FORAY (Facebook) aus Österreich haben sich 2005 gegründet. Am 07.04.2023 ist es soweit und das neue Album „Oathbreaker“ erblickt das Licht der Welt. Die Band hat schon immer einen guten Qualitätsstandard bewiesen. Das letzte Album „Weltenwandel“ war jedoch schon sehr düster geraten. Das neue Album orientiert sich mehr an die früheren Werke. Allerdings hat man sich einen großen Schritt weiterentwickelt. Die technischen Skills und auch das Songwriting haben sich merklich verbessert. Zumindest ich habe das Gefühl, dass HEATHEN FORAY auf „Oathbreaker“ einen geilen Sound entwickelt haben. Aber der Reihe nach….

Es beginnt

mit dem Titeltrack „Oathbreaker“. Eine sehr gute Wahl, um die musikalische Reise einzuleiten. Der massive Brecher marschiert floot nach vorne und ist dabei sehr eingängig gestaltet. Der Refrain wird wohl auf jedem Konzert kräftig mitgesungen werden. Die Gitarren klingen verspielt und lebendig, was auch zur Intensivierung des melodischen Faktors und des Energielevels beiträgt. Es hat sich einfach insgesamt in allen Bereichen viel getan. Hier hat der Mix von englischen und deutschen Vocals auch durchaus seinen Charme. Auf das Thema gehe ich aber später noch ein. Hört erst einmal mal selber, was der Opener des Albums zu bieten hat.

Tolle Produktion

Der Sound klingt sehr ausgewogen, wobei alles kraftvoll mit gehörig Druck rüberkommt und die Details nicht verloren gehen. Besonders positiv ist mir dabei auch der Gesang aufgefallen, den man fast immer wunderbar verstehen kann. Das fördert die Verbundenheit mit den Songs. Gleichwohl kommen aber auch alle Instrumente ausgezeichnet zur Geltung.

Es scheint, dass die Band einen guten Schluck aus dem Horn der Kreativität getrunken hat. Die Songs sind ausgefeilt und abwechslungsreich, was das Herz durchweg durchweg das Herz höher schlagen lässt. Es wird Stimmung ohne Ende gemacht. Bemerkenswert ist, dass das Ganze einen folkigen Touch hat, aber komplett auf Folkinstrumente verzichtet wird. Als Paradebeispiel sei beispielsweise „Allvoll“ genannt, der zwar speedy thrashig abgeht, aber schlussendlich einen ehrlichen Schuss Folk in sich hat, wenn der schwungvolle Refrain erklingt.

Auch die epischen monumentalen Reisen

sind HEATHEN FORAY nicht fremd. So wagen sie sich sich an zwei überlange Tracks mit über sieben Minuten Spielzeit. Und auch diese Zeit füllen sie mit pfiffigen Ideen, die zu begeistern wissen. Die Songverläufe sind deshalb kurzweilig und eingängig gestaltet. Da möchte man keine Rast machen, sondern ist gespannt, was die Reise noch so hergibt. „1000 years of human flesh“ ist einer der gigantischen Tracks. Im majestätischen Midtempo erhebt sich dieser Song, in dem der Gesang schwankt zwischen herrlich fies und kraftvoll beschwörend.

Die Gitarrenarbeit ist auf einem hohen Niveau. Diese geilen Leads und das mitreißende Riffing wirkt immer stimmig. Die Solos sind super gemacht und sorgen ebenfalls für tolle Momente.

Das Leben ist ein Abenteuer

Dies findet man auch im anderen Gigantikus „Leben“, wenn man sich schon alleine das herrlich melodische Intro dieses Songs reinzieht. Und dann folgt die Prügel!

Der Song wechselt in den Vollgasmodus und ebenso dort vergisst man nicht den melodischen Faktor. Die bedeutsame Botschaft setzt sich mit voller Power im Metalherz fest. Nach fast vier Minuten folgt eine atmosphärischer Part, der sich vortrefflich einfügt und eine mächtige Ausstrahlung besitzt. Damit wird auch das Gitarrensolo eingeleitet.

Geil finde ich, dass sich dieses tolle Solo über eine satte Temposteigerung im Song erstreckt. Da tanzt plötzlich der Teufel Tango im heißen Feuer. Da dürfen alle Instrumentalisten und vor allem der Leadgitarrist noch mal ein richtiges Feuerwerk abfeuern. Ein wahres Highlight des Albums. Einfach gigantisch! „Leben“ ist ein Song für die Ewigkeit!

Mit heroischem Feeling

kommen Songs wie „Covenant Of Swords“ rüber, die eher den heroischen Charakter verinnerlichen. Es klingt nicht ganz so schwer, sondern hat mehr leichte Melodien. Auch wenn man mich für verrückt halten mag, hatte ich bei den Gitarrenleads manchesmal Assoziationen an die Klänge eines Dudelsacks, z.B. direkt beim Beginn des Songs.

Grandios aber auch hier, wie sich der Gesang hier darstellt, was mir besonders im deutschsprachigen Part gefällt. Dunkel und massiv erhebt er sich über die melodischen Leads. Ich finde es schade, dass der Song nicht komplett in deutscher Sprache gesungen wurde. Bei diesem Song haben mir die deutschsprachigen Parts deutlich besser gefallen.

The Deutsch-English Mix

Das bringt mich zu der Frage, warum man nicht das komplette Set in Deutsch singt. Die Mischung der Sprachen hat manchmal ihren Charme, aber der Gesang in deutscher Sprache ist so geil, dass es eigentlich gar nicht notwendig wäre in die englische Sprache zu wechseln. Mir persönlich würde die deutsche Sprache vollkommen ausreichen, da sie dem Sound meiner Meinung nach mehr Ausdruck verleiht.

Das zeigt sich für mich dementsprechend im Song „Ahnenreih“. Ein grooviger Song, der sich wie „Leben“ in epische Gefilde begibt. Ein weiterer atemberaubender Song, der alles bietet, was man sich wünscht.

Fazit

HEATHEN FORAY haben mit „Oathbreaker“ ein grandioses Album erschaffen. Die Songs begeistern mit einem hohen Unterhaltungsfaktor. Der zu jederzeit druckvolle und mitreißende Sound wurde auf ein neues Level gehoben und sollte die Fangemeinde in erheblichem Maße vergößern. HEATHEN FORAY werden sich sicherlich in meiner Bestenliste des Jahres 2023 wiederfinden.

English review

Pagan Metal

HEATHEN FORAY (Facebook) from Austria were formed in 2005. They play Pagan/Viking Metal. On 07.04.2023 the time has come and the new album „Oathbreaker“ sees the light of day. The band has always proved a good quality standard. However, the last album „Weltenwandel“ was very dark. The new album is more oriented to the earlier albums. However, they have technically developed a step further and also the songwriting has improved noticeably. At least I have the feeling that HEATHEN FORAY have an awesome sound on „Oathbreaker“. But one after the other….

It starts vehemently

with the title track „Oathbreaker„. A very good choice to introduce the musical journey. The massive smascher marches floot forward and is designed very catchy. The chorus will probably be sung along vigorously at every concert. The guitars sound playful and lively, which also contributes to the intensification of the melodic factor and the energy level. There has simply been a lot of improvement overall in all areas. Here the mix of English and German vocals also has its charm. But I’ll go into that topic later. First listen for yourself what the opener of the album has to offer.

Strong sound

The music sounds sophisticated, everything comes across powerfully and the details are not lost. I was particularly impressed by the singing. You can almost understand every word in the singing. This fosters a connection with the songs. Nevertheless, all instruments come into their own.

It seems that the band has drunk from the horn of creativity. The songs are varied and make the heart beat faster throughout. The compositions are polished and offer the best entertainment. It is remarkable that the whole thing has a folky touch, but completely renounces folk instruments. A prime example is „Allvoll“, which goes off speedy thrashy, but finally has an honest shot of folk in it, when the swinging chorus sounds.

Also epic monumental journeys

are not a strange thing for HEATHEN FORAY. So they dare to two overlong tracks with over seven minutes playing time. And also this time they fill with many smart ideas that know how to inspire. The song progressions are therefore entertaining and catchy. You don’t want to take a break, but are curious to see where else the journey will take you. „1000 years of human flesh“ is one of the gigantic majestic tracks. The vocals fluctuate between wonderfully nasty and powerfully evocative.

The guitar work has now reached a high level. These horny leads and the rousing riffing always seems coherent. The solos are super done and also provide great moments.

Life is an adventure

This can also be found in the other gigantic song „Life“! If you just take a look at the wonderfully melodic intro of this song. And then follows the blast!

The song switches to full throttle mode and also there you don’t forget the melodic factor. The meaningful message settles with full power in the metal heart. After almost four minutes, an atmospheric part follows, which fits in excellently and has a powerful aura. This also introduces the guitar solo.

I think it’s cool that this long solo extends over a full increase in tempo. All instrumentalists and especially the lead guitarist are allowed to fire off some real fireworks. A true highlight of the album and hardly to evaluate with points. Simply gigantic! „Life“ is a song for eternity!

With heroic feeling

songs like „Covenant Of Swords“ come across. It doesn’t sound quite as heavy, but has more light flying melodies. Even though you might think I’m crazy, I had associations with the sounds of a bagpipe during the guitar leads some times, e.g. right at the beginning of the song.

Grandiose but also here, how the vocals present themselves here, which I like especially in the German-language parts. With dark power, the vocals rise above the melodic leads. To be honest I don’t know why the whole song wasn’t sung entirely in German. I liked the German-language parts better on this song.

The German English Mix

Now I come to my consideration, why HEATHEN FORAY don’t sing the complete set in German. The mixture of languages sometimes has its charm (see „Oathbreaker“), but the vocals in German are so cool that it would not really be necessary to switch to English. Personally, the German language would be quite enough for me, as I think it gives more expression to the sound, especially since it is not so common in this metal genre.

This shows for me accordingly in the song „Ahnenreih“. A groovy imposing song that, like „Leben“, goes into epic realms and offers everything you could wish for.

Conclusion

HEATHEN FORAY have created a terrific album with „Oathbreaker“. The songs inspire with a high entertainment factor. The at any time powerful and rousing sound was raised to a new level. This should increase the fan base considerably. HEATHEN FORAY will certainly find themselves in my top list of 2023.
