Es begann 2021 mit „Pagan Rhythms“, setzte sich mit „Deathwestern“ 2022 fort und finalisiert nun mit dem dritten Chapter „Helldorado“. SPIRITWORLD aus Las Vegas erzählen auf ihren Album Geschichten aus dem Buch „Godlessness“ von Stu Folsom. Es ist eine Sammlung von Kurzgeschichten, die ihre Wurzeln im Lovecraft’schen Horror und in Louis LaMours klassischen Erzählungen über den amerikanischen Westen haben. Die Musik ist so wahnsinnig wie die Geschichten selbst.

Die ersten beiden Alben knallen gnadenlos rein und es kommen Assoziationen mit Bands wie beispielsweise ‚Slayer‘ hoch. Viele hochgeschwindige Songs, die sich ihren Weg durch die Ohren schießen. Musikalisch bekam man bisher allerdings keine Western-Gefühle. Dies ändert sich mit dem neuen Kapitel der Saga!

Helldorado

lässt die Saloontüren aufschwingen und sorgt mit einem coolen groovigen Western-Punkrock-Einstieg für einen sehr gelungenen Auftakt, den man so bisher noch nicht von SPRITWORLD kannte. Ich finde diesen Einstieg schlichtweg genial. Bevor sich einige Leute sorgen machen, dass der Sound von SPIRITWORLD eine andere Richtung einschlägt, kann ich sagen, dass sie sich ihre harte Schale bewahrt haben. Dies wird spätestens nach Minute 01:35 deutlich, wenn der Song die Saloon-Idylle mit einem Knall beendet und den Saloon dem Erdboden gleichmacht. Denn dann wird der Song zu einem wirbelnden Tornado, der alles kurz und klein schreddert. Was für hammergeile Riffs sind da in meine Ohren fräsen. Einfach nur bestialisch.

Die höllischen Riffgewitter lässt nicht nach. Es kracht und donnert zunächst gnadenlos weiter, bis plötzlich der Song „Bird Song Of Death“ mit harmonischen Country-Klängen mit moderatem Härtegrad und lockerem Auftreten für Party-Laune sorgt. Und „Prayer Lips“ ist sogar ne melancholische angehauchte Ballade mit sanften Vocals. Solche Dinge gab es auf den Alben bisher nicht zu hören. Ist aufgrund der bisherigen Erfahrungen schon gewöhnungsbedürftig.

Nach dem kurzen Sonneschein kehrt das Soundgewitter aber mit „Waiting On The Reaper“ wieder vehement zurück.

Nach ‚Godlessness‘ geht es weiter mit einem neuen Zyklus von Geschichten. Helldorado ist ein Vorgeschmack auf das, was als nächstes in dieser Welt passiert. Es ist die gleiche Art von epischem Horror-Western Quest, die auf dieser Trilogie von Platten stattgefunden hat. In dem Song ‚Waiting on the Reaper‘ gibt es eine Zeile:

I saw a vision of my fate in a puddle of piss and jaguar blood‘. (Ich sah eine Vision meines Schicksals in einer Pfütze aus Pisse und Jaguarblut.)

Das war ein Text, der mir einfach so einfiel, während ich Gitarre spielte und Kauderwelsch murmelte. Das ist eine so coole Zeile, dass sie in dem Buch, das ich gerade schreibe, ein paar Kapitel einnimmt. Zwei Zeilen in einem Heavy-Metal-Song, die irgendwie zu mehreren tausend Wörtern Fiktion geworden sind. Das eine beeinflusst das andere.

Pressetext Oktober Promotion

„Oblivion“ scheint direkt in der Hölle aufgenommen worden zu sein. Ein düsterer Smasher mit krassen Bassmomenten, der in der zweiten Hälfte so richtig fies wird. „Cleansing“ ist ein kurzes instrumentales Zwischenspiel, bevor es mit „Stigmata Scars“ und „Annihilism“ dem Ende zugeht, wobei „Annihilism“ das Album recht ruhig ausklingen lässt und noch einmal Country-Feeling aufkommen lässt.

Fazit

SPIRITWORLD öffnen mit „Helldorado“ wieder die Tore der Western-Hölle. Dabei gehen sie neue Wege, die das bisher durchweg knallharte Konzept ein wenig auflockern und neue Facetten offenbaren. Atmosphärisch sorgt dies für mehr Tiefgang und Bezug zur Western-Thematik. Ob so eine Ballade wie „Prayer Lips“ nun unbedingt sein muss, sei mal dahingestellt.

Einziges Manko, was ich hier zu bemängeln habe, ist die wirklich extrem kurze Spielzeit. Es reicht noch nicht einmal für ganze 30 Minuten. Da hätte es ruhig etwas mehr sein dürfen und ist eines Longplayers nicht würdig.

SPIRITWORLD from Las Vegas tell stories from the book „Godlessness“ by Stu Folsom on their album. It is a collection of short stories that have their roots in Lovecraft horror and Louis LaMour’s classic tales of the American West. The music is as insane as the stories themselves.

The first two albums bang mercilessly and associations with bands such as ‚Slayer‘ come to mind. Lots of high-speed songs that shoot their way through your ears. Musically, however, you don’t get a Western feeling yet. This changes with the new chapter of the saga!

Helldorado

lets the saloon doors swing open and blast a very successful start with a cool, groovy western punk rock introduction that SPRITWORLD have never done before. I think this introduction is simply brilliant. Before some people worry that SPIRITWORLD’s sound is going in a different direction, I can say that they have kept their tough edge. This becomes clear after minute 01:35, when the song ends the saloon idyll with a bang and razes the saloon to the ground. Because then the song becomes a whirling tornado that shreds everything to bits. Awesome riffs grab you in this beast.

The hellish riff thunderstorm doesn’t let up. It continues to crash and thunder mercilessly at first, until suddenly the song „Bird Song Of Death“ creates a party mood with harmonious country sounds with a moderate degree of heaviness and a relaxed feeling. And „Prayer Lips“ is even a melancholy ballad with gentle vocals. You haven’t heard anything like this on the albums so far. Based on previous experience, it takes some getting used to.

After the brief sunshine, however, the wild rodeo of sound returns vehemently with „Waiting On The Reaper“.

It continues post Godlessness onto a new cycle of stories. Helldorado is a sneak peek into what happens next in that world. It’s the same sort of epic horror Western fiction quest that has been happening on this trilogy of records. In the song ‘Waiting on the Reaper”, there’s a line,

‘I saw a vision of my fate in a puddle of piss and jaguar blood’.

That was a lyric that just came while I was playing guitar and mumbling gibberish. That’s such a cool line that it’s become a couple chapters in the book I’m writing. Two lines in a
heavy metal song that somehow grew into several thousand words of fiction. One informs the other.

„Oblivion“ seems to have been recorded directly in hell. A dark smasher with blatant bass moments that gets really nasty in the second half. „Cleansing“ is a short instrumental interlude before „Stigmata Scars“ and „Annihilism“ finalize the album. „Annihilism“ bringing the album to a quiet close and giving it a country feel once again.

Conclusion

With „Helldorado“, SPIRITWORLD once again unleash the gates of hell in the Western world. In doing so, they are breaking new ground, loosening up the consistently hard-hitting concept a bit and revealing new facets. Atmospherically, this provides more depth and reference to the Western theme.

The only drawback I have to criticize here is the extremely short playing time. It’s not even enough for a full 30 minutes. It could have been a bit longer and is not worthy of a long player record.
