Fisher Price Kassettenrecorder als Startschuss für BLACK FOXXES

Sänger Mark Holly nahm schon im frühen Alter von sechs Jahren erste Songs auf seinem Fisher Price Kassettenrecorder auf. Inspiriert wurde er dabei von den Platten seines Vaters, insbesondere von Hendrix, Neil Young und Oasis. Mark dazu:

I was obsessed, it was all I was interested in. If it wasn’t for making music, I’d have no release.”

Gegründet hat er dann einige Jahre später die Band BLACK FOXXES, die jetzt mit Tristan Jane am Bass und Ant Thornton am Schlagzeug die aktuelle Besetzung gefunden hat. Mark weiter:

I just pick up my guitar and start recording a voice memo on my phone, and they come to me. It comes out so emotional and intense because I’m not even thinking about writing. So whatever I’m thinking or feeling just comes out as music.”

Kurze Zeit später nahm die Band die schon angesprochene EP Pines auf. Diese verbreitete sich schnell und ebnete den Weg zu einem Plattenvertrag.

Sechs Wochen im Studio – Video zu I’m Not Well

Für das Debut I’m Not Well konnte die Band den Produzenten Adrian Bushby für sich gewinnen, der mit Bands wie Muse, den Foo Fighters oder The Rapture zusammen gearbeitet hat. Die Aufnahmen wurden in insgesamt sechs Wochen in Adrian Bushby’s North London Studios erledigt. Dabei wurde sehr spontan und losgelöst gearbeitet, so dass in wenigen Takes die Momente und die Stimmung eingefangen werden konnten, die die Band sich vorgestellt hat.

Krankheitsbedingte Angstzustände

Auch aufgrund von krankheitsbedingten Angstzuständen erschaffen BLACK FOXXES ihren Rock ohne große Schnörkel und aus dem Bauch heraus. Sänger Mark Holly, der mit Morbus Crohn leben muss dazu:

There’s been so many times when I’ve wanted to quit, but something inside me says, ‘No, this is exactly what you need to do.’ I think this is the only thing I’m good at. Every time I perform, I have this feeling, like, ‘This is right’, no matter the negative thoughts I have beforehand. I’m an anxious mess, and then I walk out and play, and everything is alright. It’s like I’m answering my calling. And then I walk offstage, and everything’s shit again. It’s like a drug, an addiction. You go back to normal life, and even though it was so hard, you just want to do it again.”
