Es gibt Bands, da wundert man sich, warum man die eigentlich nicht kennt, obwohl sie schon länger im Geschäft sind. Dies ergeht mir so bei der Band GOLDSMITH, die mit „Into The Wilds“ bereits das vierte Album präsentieren. Herzstück der Band ist Musiker Michael Goldschmidt, womit sich auch lustigerweise der Bandname recht gut erklärt. Natürlich habe ich mir auch die anderen drei Alben angehört und kam zu folgender Frage:

Wie beschreibt man die Musik von GOLDSMITH?

Die Antwort ist nämlich gar nicht so einfach. GOLDSMITH spielen aktuell melodischen Heavy Metal, aber das war nicht immer so. Hier verweise ich mal auf das Album „Shut Up & Rock“ aus dem Jahr 2013, auf dem die Songs eindeutig dem Rock zuzuordnen sind, sogar teils mit einer lockeren bluesigen Note. Dieses Konzept wurde dann auf „Fire!“ fortgeführt, nur mit mehr Feuer und Punch. Auf dem letzten Album „Of Sound And Fury“ machte man direkt mit dem Opener „Inherit The Wind“ deutlich, dass man in eine andere Richtung geht. Der rockige Ausdruck wich mehr dem knalligen Heavy Metal Sound und offenbarte damals den härtesten Song in deren Historie.

Im Laufe der Zeit wurden die Songs auch verspielter und vielschichtiger, was sich auch in den Spielzeiten bemerkbar machte. Trotzdem besitzen die Songs auch eine klare Kante, die ordentlich reinhaut. So darf man gespannt sein, was uns auf dem neuen Album erwartet. Der Titel „Into The Wilds“ könnte darauf hindeuten, dass es hart zur Sache geht.

Dieser Eindruck bestätigt sich in den ersten Momente beim Song „Into The Wilds“ allerdings noch nicht, denn es beginnt mit melodischen Gesang und zurückhaltender Instrumentierung, was wirklich schön klingt. Doch dann plötzlich nach 38 Sekunden bekomme ich ein paar Watschn ins Gesicht geschmettert. Hui… Was ist denn da los? Sind GOLDSMITH jetzt zum Thrash Metal übergegangen? Zumindest könnte man es meinen, so wie der Song plötzlich abgeht. Fette Riffs und brutal treibende Drums bestimmen das Geschehen. Der Bass kommt kräftig durch und der Gesang wird schärfer.

Doch so weit gehen GOLDSMITH dann doch nicht. „Into The Wilds“ bietet eine Fülle von verschiedenen Eindrücken in einem Song, die schon recht unterschiedlich in ihrem Ausdruck sind. GOLDSMITH beweisen hier zum einen viel musikalisches Geschick beim Songwriting und zum anderen auch viel Mut, denn insgesamt muss man das Ding als Hörer schon erst einmal verarbeiten. „Into The Wilds“ ist komplex, aber gleichzeitig mitreißend! Und technisch ist das schon hohe Kunst, was hier geboten wird.

Der Energielevel bleibt auch mit dem folgenden Song „The Nowhere Kids“ hoch. GOLDSMITH geben ordentlich Gas und sind im Vollgalopp unterwegs. Man galoppiert stringent geradeaus ohne den Weg zu verlassen. Damit zeigt die Band, dass sie auch ganz unkompliziert abledern können, aber dabei immer noch coole Sound-Akzente setzen. Der Song ist einfach zum abrocken, von vorne bis hinten.

„Here’s My Revenge“ spielt wiederum mit Kontrasten und Überraschungen. Ein Song, der über eine lange Zeit nicht so sehr Wert auf Geschwindigkeit legt, aber trotzdem mit massiven Riffs sehr kraftvoll rüberkommt, doch auch mit sanften melodischen Einlagen verwöhnt. Eigentlich hätte man den Song nach vier Minuten beenden können, doch nicht mit GOLDSMITH. In den letzten zwei Minuten drehen sie dann doch noch mächtig auf. Jetzt kommen die schnellen Läufe, die Soli, die Twin-Guitar-Attacken – alles wirkt wie ein Befreiungsschlag. So bringt man den Song mit einem rasanten Spurt zu einem brennenden Ende.

„In Skies Of Grey“ ist die Powerballade des Albums mit einem gefühlvollen Beginn, wobei man in der zweiten Häfte deutlich kraftvoller auftritt. „Slingshoot Boogie“ als Schlusstrack schließt insofern des Kreis, als dass der Song genauso hart geschmettert wird wie der Opener. Der Motor läuft noch einmal auf Hochtouren und bringt das Album zu einem eskalierenden Ende.

Ich möchte noch kurz auf „Baron Blood“ eingehen, weil dieser Song mit seiner teils klassischen Attitüde eindrucksvoll die Vielseitigkeit der Band zum Ausdruck bringt verbunden mit dem Talent tolle individuelle Songs zu schreiben. Ein treibender Beat mit gefälligen Melodien, zwischendurch aggressivere Riffs und druckvollere Drums. Dazu noch schmeichelnde Gesangslinien, die sich sofort im Kopf einnisten. Im Mittelteil fügt man einen doomigen Part ein, bei dem ein wenig unheimliche Atmosphäre aufkommt. Der ausgiebige Instrumentalpart führt dann wieder geschickt auf den ursprünglichen Weg. So schließt sich der Kreis!

Fazit

GOLDSMITH sind weiter auf Kurs und hauen mit „Into The Wilds“ ein rundum gelungenes und höchst unterhaltsames Album raus. Mit „Into The Wilds“ legen GOLDSMITH ein Album vor, das nicht nur musikalisch überzeugt, sondern auch konzeptionell glänzt. Die Band zeigt sich gereift, mutiger und vielseitiger denn je. Das Songwriting ist ausgefeilt, die Arrangements durchdacht und die Produktion druckvoll und transparent. Der Mix ist super gelungen und bietet ein ausgewogenes Verhältnis zwischen metallischer Härte, rockiger Leichtigkeit und eingängigen Melodien. GOLDSMITH beherrschen die gesamte Klaviatur modernen Heavy Metals mit klassischem Fundament, das sowohl Kopf als auch Herz anspricht.

There are bands that make you wonder why you don’t actually know them, even though they’ve been in the business for a long time. This is the case with GOLDSMITH (Facebook), who present their fourth album „Into The Wilds“. Heart of the band is musician Michael Goldschmidt, which, funnily enough, explains the band name quite well. Of course, I also listened to the other three albums and came to the following question:

How do you describe the music of GOLDSMITH?

The answer is not that simple. GOLDSMITH currently play melodic heavy metal, but that wasn’t always the case. Here I refer to the album „Shut Up & Rock“ from 2013, on which the songs can clearly be classified as rock, even with a loose bluesy note in places. This concept was then continued on „Fire!“, only with more fire and punch. On the last album „Of Sound And Fury“, they made it clear straight away with the opener „Inherit The Wind“ that they were going in a different direction. The rock expression gave way to a more blaring heavy metal sound and revealed the heaviest song in their history at this time.

Over time, the songs also became more playful and multi-layered, which was also noticeable in the playing times. Nevertheless, the songs still have a clear edge that packs a punch. So it will be interesting to see what awaits us on the new album. The title „Into The Wilds“ could indicate that things are going to get tough.

„Into The Wilds“

However, this assessment is not confirmed in the first few moments of the song „Into The Wilds“, because it starts with melodic vocals and restrained instrumentation, which sounds really nice. But then suddenly after 38 seconds I get hard slaps in the face. Wow… What’s going on? Have GOLDSMITH gone over to thrash metal now? At least you’d think so, the way the song suddenly takes off. Fat riffs and brutally driving drums dominate the proceedings. The bass comes through strongly and the vocals become sharper.

But GOLDSMITH don’t go that far. „Into The Wilds“ offers a wealth of different impressions in one song, which are quite different in their expression. On the one hand, GOLDSMITH shows a great deal of musical skill in their songwriting and, on the other, they have a lot of courage, because as a listener you have to process the whole thing first. „Into The Wilds“ is complex, but at the same time captivating! And technically, what is on offer here is high art.

The energy level remains high with the following song „The Nowhere Kids“. GOLDSMITH really step on the gas and are on the move at full gallop. They gallop stringently straight ahead without leaving the path. In doing so, the band shows that they can also play straightforwardly but still set cool sound accents. The song is easy to rock out to, from front to back.

„Here’s My Revenge“ again plays with contrasts and surprises. A song that doesn’t emphasize speed for a long time, but still comes across as very powerful with massive riffs, but also spoils you with gentle melodic interludes. Actually, the song could have ended after four minutes, but not with GOLDSMITH. In the last two minutes, they really turn up the heat. Now come the fast runs, the solos, the twin guitar attacks – everything seems like a liberating blow. The song is brought to a burning end.

„In Skies Of Grey“ is the album’s power ballad with a soulful beginning, although the second half is much more powerful. „Slingshoot Boogie“ as the closing track closes the circle in that the song is belted out just as hard as the opener. The engine revs up once again and brings the album to an escalating final.

I would like to briefly mention „Baron Blood“, because this song with its partly classical attitude impressively expresses the band’s versatility combined with their talent for writing great individual songs. A driving beat with pleasing melodies, in between more aggressive riffs and powerful drums. In addition, flattering vocal lines that immediately get stuck in your head. A doomy part is added in the middle section, which creates a slightly sinister atmosphere. The extensive instrumental part then cleverly leads back to the original path. And so the circle is complete!

Conclusion

GOLDSMITH are still on course and with „Into The Wilds“ have released an all-round successful and highly entertaining album. With „Into The Wilds“, GOLDSMITH present an album that not only convinces musically, but also shines conceptually. The band has matured, is bolder and more versatile than ever. The songwriting is sophisticated, the arrangements well thought out and the production is powerful and transparent. The mix is superb and offers a good balance between metallic heaviness, rocking lightness and catchy melodies. GOLDSMITH have mastered the entire range of modern heavy metal with a classic foundation that appeals to both the head and the heart.
