It is admirable how bands still succeed in surprising me. With „The Oubliette“ by THE RETICENT (homepage) it really has also to do with the theme that is dealt with on the album. It is a topic I would never expected in a musical context, although it is indeed omnipresent and my family was also affected in the past. Chris Hathcock has turned to the hard topic of ALZHEIMER’s disease and dedicated an entire album to it. It is a cruel disease that gradually causes the soul of a person to die a cruel death, as the disease slowly swallows everything that ultimately makes him up; his memories and thus his personality. Chris Hathcock builds up the album in the form of a narrative, which sketches the course of the illness using the example of a person named Henry.

An ambitious PROG-METAL-EPOS

THE RETICENT (FaceBook) offer a progressive epic involving everything from rock to metal. The album is an inexhaustible source of audible impressions, which have an insane complexity. It is truly no easy fare, neither thematically nor musically. The listener is taken on an incredibly intense journey, which emotionally demands everything from you, but also offers a lot.

„Stage 1: His name is Henry.“ still starts quite chilly and calm, but that changes pretty soon. The song becomes more restless and the guitars provide for restless parts change with very harmonic chilly phases. It even gets a little funky with a nice Hammond organ. It swings really well and has a damn good drive. But at some point the mood changes and the song falls into a violent black metal part. Hard riffing, driving drums and crass screams rush into the listener, followed by a crazy guitar solo. Absolutely first class.

„Stage 2: The Captive“

was visually staged with an impressive video. The song itself will put you on a rollercoaster of emotions. Rarely heard something so brilliant. The track starts with a cool drum solo. What follows is hard to describe. From Death-Metal to a fantastic instrumental saxophone part with afterwards soulful clean vocals (and it doesn’t end there) you’ll get a crazy mixture of sounds. Thematically the song is about Henry not being aware of his illness and thinking that he was wrongfully imprisoned. He is convinced that his wife is kept away from him. It is a song between anger, frustration and despair. Convince yourself with the following video:

Nightmare and salvation

„Stage 3: The Palliative Breath“ continues the album in a rocky melodic way.

„Stage 4: The Dream“ starts up very calm and smooth and increases in intensity. Towards the end it becomes rocky and dynamic with an impressive guitar solo finale.

Afterwards follows with „Stage 5: The Nightmare“ again a song which is an absolute highlight for me. In keeping with the title, the song plays in the tougher league again. After a short confused introduction it breaks out brutally and amazes with a short but powerful use of a wind ensemble. In the course the hard nightmarish sequences alternate with melodic sections. The 12 minutes are an epic realisation of the really freaking nightmare.

„Stage 6: The Oubliette“ as the title song heads towards the end. One moves in calmer waters. A thoughtful atmosphere is created, whereby the very soulful singing evokes impressively sad fearful emotions. This will leave no one unimpressed. It is the phase when Henry realises that he is trapped in his own body without the prospect of escape. He becomes aware that there is only one way to salvation.

At the end with „Stage 7: ______“ the only possible salvation is waiting in the form of death, implemented by a pure instrumental track with spherical sounds that create an almost conciliatory mood.

Result

It is not an easy listening album! Neither of the theme nor of the musical interpretation. It is a very demanding intensive journey with many emotions. In any case, the album does not pass the listener without leaving a trace. I find it incredibly courageous to tackle such a topic at all. For fans of progressive metal it is definitely a must. The musical quality is absolutely beyond any doubt. THE RETICENT has an enormous range that obviously knows no boundaries. That is breathtaking. Especially when you consider that Chris Hathcock recorded almost all instruments alone in the studio. Only James Nelson has been a supporter during the studio recordings with his fantastic guitar solos. For live gigs Chris Hathcock has of course other supporters like you can see on the bandphoto. There will be moments that are soothing and there will be moments that are overwhelming. The story I have to tell is not a happy one but it is an important one – and it is often through the pain that we find the most profound reflection and calls to action.”

Es ist bewundernswert, wie es Bands immer noch schaffen mich zu überraschen. Bei dem Album „The Oubliette“ von THE RETICENT (Homepage) hat es tatsächlich auch mit dem Thema zu tun, welches auf dem Album aufgearbeitet wird und zu einer Herzensangelegenheit werden lässt. Es ist ein Thema, auf das ich im musikalischen Zusammenhang nie gekommen wäre, obwohl es tatsächlich allgegenwärtig ist und auch meine Familie in der Vergangenheit betroffen hat. Es kann jeden treffen und niemand weiß, wen es trifft. Chris Hathcock hat sich dem harten Thema der ALZHEIMER-Krankheit zugewandt und dieser ein ganzes Album gewidmet. Es ist eine grausame Krankheit, die die Seele eines Menschen nach und nach grausam sterben lässt, indem die Krankheit langsam alles verzehrt, was ihn letztlich ausmacht…. seine Erinnerungen und damit seine Persönlichkeit. Chris Hathcock baut das Album in Form einer Erzählung auf, welche den Krankheitsverlauf am Beispiel einer Person namens Henry skizziert.

Ein ambitioniertes PROG-METAL-EPOS

THE RETICENT (FaceBook) bieten ein progressives Epos, welches von Rock bis Metal alles abdeckt, was man sich vorstellen kann. Das Album ist eine sprudelnde Quelle an audiblen Eindrücken, die eine wahnsinnige Komplexität besitzen. Es ist wahrlich keine leichte Kost, weder thematisch noch musikalisch. Der Hörer wird auf eine unheimlich intensive Reise mitgenommen, die einem emotional alles abverlangt, aber auch viel bietet.

„Stage 1: His name ist Henry.“ beginnt noch ziemlich relaxt und ruhig, was sich aber ziemlich bald ändert. Der Song wird unruhiger und die Gitarren sorgen für Unruhige Parts wechseln mit sehr harmonischen chilligen Phasen. Ja es wird sogar ein wenig funky mit einer schönen Hammond-Orgel. Das swingt ordentlich und hat echt einen verdammt guten Drive. Aber irgendwann kippt die Stimmung und der Song verfällt in einen Black-Metal-Part, der es heftig krachen lässt. Hartes Riffing, treibende Drums und krasse Screams prasseln auf den Hörer ein, gefolgt von einem irren Gitarrensolo. Absolut erstklassig.

Der Gefangene

„Stage 2: The Captive“ wurde mit einem beeindruckenden Video visuell in Szene gesetzt. Der Song selber wird Euch in eine Achterbahn der Emotionen setzen. Selten so was geniales gehört. Der Track beginnt mit einem coolen Drumsolo. Was dann folgt, ist kaum zu beschreiben. Vom Death-Metal über einen phantastischen instrumentalen Saxophonpart mit anschließend gefühlvollen clean gesungenen Vocals (und damit endet es nicht) wird Euch eine irre Mischung an Sounds verabreicht. Diesen Input muss man erst mal verabeiten. Thematisch handelt der Song davon, dass Henry sich seiner Krankheit nicht bewusst ist und denkt, dass er zu Unrecht eingesperrt wurde. Er ist davon überzeugt, dass seine Frau von ihm ferngehalten wird. Es ist ein Song zwischen Wut, Frustration und Verzweiflung. Erlebt es selbst mit dem folgenden Video:

Albtraum und Erlösung

„Stage 3: The Palliative Breath“ setzt das Album zunächst rockig melodisch fort. „Stage 4: The Dream“ beginnt ruhig und gelassen, steigert sich immer weiter zu einem rockigen beschwingten Song. Am Ende begeistert er mit einem beeindruckenden Gitarrensolofinale.

Danach folgt mit „Stage 5: The Nightmare“ wieder ein Song, der für mich ein absolutes Highlight darstellt. Titelkonform spielt der Song wieder in der härteren Liga. Er bricht nach einer kurzen konfusen Einleitung umgehend brutal hervor und brilliert mit einem kurzen, aber gewaltigen Einsatz eines Bläserensembles. Im Verlauf wechseln die harten albtraumhaften Sequenzen mit harmonischen Abschnitten. Die 12 Minuten symbolisieren imposant einen wahrhaft verrückten Albtraum.

„Stage 6: The Oubliette“ (Der Kerker.) als Titelsong steuert dem Ende entgegen. Man bewegt sich in ruhigeren Gewässern. Es wird eine nachdenkliche Atmosphäre erzeugt, wobei der sehr gefühlvolle Gesang eindrucksvoll traurige angstvolle Emotionen hervorruft. Dies wird niemanden kalt lassen. Es ist die Phase, in der Henry realisiert, dass er in seinem eigenen Körper gefangen ist ohne die Aussicht ein Entkommen. Ihm wird bewusst, dass es nur noch einen Weg der Erlösung gibt.

Am Ende mit „Stage 7: _______“ wartet die einzige mögliche Erlösung in Form des Todes, umgesetzt durch einen reinen Instrumentaltrack mit sphärischen Klängen, welche eine fast versöhnliche Stimmung erzeugen.

Fazit

Es ist kein leichtes Album! Weder vom Thema noch von der musikalischen Interpretation. Es in eine sehr anspruchsvolle intensive Reise mit vielen Emotionen. Das Album geht jedenfalls nicht spurlos an dem Hörer vorüber. Ich finde es unheimlich mutig so ein Thema überhaupt anzupacken. Für Fans von progressivem Metal ist es auf jeden Fall ein Pflichtprogramm. Die musikalische Qualität ist absolut über jeden Zweifel erhaben. THE RETICENT hat eine enorme Bandbreite, die offenkundig keine Grenzen kennt. Das ist atemberaubend. Vor allem, wenn man bedenkt, dass Chris Hathcock fast alle Instrumente plus den Gesang alleine im Studio eingespielt und eingesungen hat. Lediglich James Nelson ist bei den Studioaufnahmen mit seinen fantastischen Gitarrensoli als Unterstützer tätig gewesen. Für Live-Auftritte hat Chris Hathcock natürlich noch weitere Mitstreiter wie man oben auf dem Bandfoto sehen kann. Man darf gespannt sein, was da in Zukunft noch passieren wird. Bisher auf jeden Fall noch ein absoluter Geheimtipp!

„Wie bei meinem Vorgängeralbum hoffe ich, dass ‚The Oubliette‘ den Zuhörern ein reichhaltiges und emotional herausforderndes Hörerlebnis bieten wird. Dies ist zweifellos die ehrgeizigste Platte, die The Reticent bisher versucht hat. Die Hoffnung ist, dass die Zuhörer von der Musik auf einer tiefen Ebene persönlich betroffen sein werden und dass sie die Aufmerksamkeit auf eine Krankheit lenkt, die erschreckend prominent ist, aber oft nur unzureichend verstanden wird. Es wird Momente geben, die beruhigend sind, und es wird Momente geben, die überwältigend sind. Die Geschichte, die ich zu erzählen habe, ist keine glückliche, aber eine wichtige Geschichte – und es ist oft der Schmerz, durch den wir die tiefgründigste Reflexion und den Aufruf zum Handeln finden“.
