Die finsteren Gesellen von THYRFING (Facebook ) aus dem nordischen Schweden haben sich ganze acht Jahre Zeit gelassen und treten nun mit ihrem neuen Longplayer „Vanagandr“ (VÖ 27.08.2021) an, um sich endlich nach dieser langen Zeit der Abstinenz mit einem Paukenschlag wieder Gehör zu verschaffen. Nun ja… Mit einem Paukenschlag holt man niemanden aus dem Tiefschlaf. Also gibt’s davon eben einige mehr auf dem Album. Mit bombastischen Songs marschieren die Metaller von THYRFING durch die Nacht und fangen die Seelen der Fans ein, die auf epischen Pagan-Metal stehen.

Die Feuertaufe

Wer mit auf die Reise möchte, der muss erst die Feuertaufe des Openers über sich ergehen lassen. „Döp Dem I Eld“ ( Tauft Sie Mit Feuer ) fackelt direkt lichterloh. Der Song zaudert nicht lang und geht unmittelbar in die Vollen. Finstere epische Landschaften tun sich auf. Die Atmosphäre zieht mich sofort ins Geschehen. Insgessamt bewegen sich die Songs meist im Midtempo-Bereich, brechen hier und da aber auch mal mit Blastbeat-Attacken aus diesem Korsett aus. Im gewaltigen Sound mischen sich symphonische Elemente ein. Hier spielen Streicher meistens die Hauptrolle.

Ohne Frage… Wir erleben hier Metal, der unheimlich wuchtig und monumental aufschlägt. Der zweite Song „Undergångens Länkar“ folgt diesem Stil nicht minder eindrucksvoll. Die typischen mächtigen Trommelschläge sorgen für kraftvolle Untermalung. Sänger Jens Rydén schreddert sich als dunkler Lord in seiner Landessprache durch die Songs und im Chorus wird mehrstimmig geschmettert.

Der Sound agiert so brutal und machtvoll wie der riesige Wolf Fenrir aus der nordischen Sage. Doch schleichen sich dann mal hier und da kleine Feinheiten ein, wie z.B. die zarten Pianoklänge im Song „Rötter“ oder die Bläser im Song „Fredlös“. Etwas deutlicher fällt es beim wohl

ungewöhnlichsten Song des Albums

auf. „Håg och minne“ beginnt mit einem sehr exotischen Instrument. Zu den mystischen Klängen eines Didgeridoo gesellen sich Krähen und dann folgt eine Erzählpart, bevor der Sound wieder mit aller Macht durchknallt. In der Mitte des Songs finde ich den Einsatz einer Flöte sehr gelungen in den Song eingebunden. Ich mag Songs, die mich so überraschen.

„Järnhand“ poltert dann wieder mehr wie ein erhabenes schwarzes Schlachtross, dass die Erde mit donnernden Hufen erzittern lässt und die Erde aufwirbelt. Die Streicher untermalen hier gnadenlose Blastbeat-Gewitter.

Den epischen Abschluss

bildet „Jordafärd“. Es ist ein weiter Ausnahmesong, dessen Beginn majestätischer Beginn mich unweigerlich an die Titelmelodie von Game Of Thrones erinnert. Ein fantastischer Einstieg in den Song, im folgenden langsam, aber bedrohlich den Weg bereitet. Der melodische Track ist eine Offenbarung. Das wunderbare Gitarrensolo intensiviert diesen Genuß und kommt verdammt geil rüber. Und der im Hintergrund einsetzende opernhafte Frauenchor am Ende bildet den perfekten Abschluss des gewaltigen Albums.

Fazit

THYRFING melden sich mit ihrem Album „Vanagandr“ imposant zurück. Erhabener dunkler Viking-/Pagan-Metal mit beachtlichen symphonischen Untermalungen. Eine interessante und beeindruckende Mischung, die mit einer wuchtigen Produktion bestens in Szene gesetzt wird. Das homogene Gesamtkonzept entwickelt eine spürbar dichte Atmosphäre.

Viking-/Pagan-Metal

The dark knights of THYRFING (Facebook ) from the Nordic Sweden have taken a long time of abstinence. After eight years they want to come back with a great bang named „Vanagandr“ (Release 2021-08-27). Well… You don’t get anyone out of a deep sleep with one single bang. So there are a few more of them on the album. With bombastic songs the metallers of THYRFING march through the night and catch the souls of the fans, who are into epic Pagan-Metal.

Baptism by fire

Who wants to go on the journey, must first endure the baptism of fire of the opener. Döp Dem I Eld“ („Baptize by fire“) flares up directly. The song does not hesitate long and shows immediately the typical bombastic sound. Dark epic landscapes open up. The atmosphere pulls me immediately into the action. Overall, the songs are mostly in the midtempo range, but break out of this corset here and there with blastbeat attacks. In the massive sound symphonic elements mix in. Strings mostly play the main role here.

Without doubt… We experience here Metal, which strikes incredibly massive and monumental. The second song „Undergångens Länkar“ follows this style no less impressive. The typical powerful drum beats provide powerful background. Singer Jens Rydén shreds as a dark lord in his native language through the songs and in the chorus is belted in several voices.

Even if the sound acts as brutal as an angry giant, small subtleties partly creep in, such as the delicate piano sounds in the song „Rötter“ or the brass in the song „Fredlös“. Somewhat more clearly it falls with the probably

most unusual song of the album

„Håg och minne“ begins with a very exotic instrument. The mystical sounds of a didgeridoo are joined by crows and then a narrative part follows before the sound pops again with all its might. In the middle of the song the soundings of a flute fits in very well in I like songs that surprise me like that.

„Järnhand“ then rumbles again more like a sublime black warhorse that makes the earth tremble with thundering hooves and stirs up the earth. The strings underline merciless blastbeat thunderstorms here.

The epic final

forms „Jordafärd“. It is a further exceptional song, whose beginning majestic inevitably reminds me of the theme song of Game Of Thrones. A fantastic introduction to the song, in the following slowly but ominously paves the way. The melodic track is a revelation. The wonderful guitar solo intensifies this pleasure and comes across damn awesome. And the operatic female choir that starts in the background at the end forms the perfect final of the tremendous album.

Result

THYRFING announce their imposing return with their album „Vanagandr“. Sublime dark Viking-/Pagan-Metal with remarkable symphonic effects. An interesting and impressive mixture, which is perfectly staged with a massive production. The homogeneous overall concept develops a palpable dense atmosphere.
