on the highest technical standard WITHIN THE RUINS (Facebook )from the States have thrown into the race with their new longplayer „Black Heart“ on 27.11.2020. The men interpret the metalcore in their special way, by going to work highly technically sophisticated and partly already quite progressive.

Taken to the extreme

they have it done now with the new songs. I must admit that I was torn while listening to the album. On the one hand, I was totally flashed by the technical skills, but also partly in some songs really overwhelmed to follow the whole thing. It pelts so much on the listener that you do not know where to listen first and you are completely overwhelmed.

The opener „Domination“

makes it directly clear where it’s going. Here is bolted and shredded what the material could give. However, sometimes clean chorus sounds are sneaking in. But the song has for me still a structure that I can follow and it captivates me with cool rhythms and concise nimble lead guitar chords that are really world class. And you think to yourself that everything is already given here. But no! You have made the calculation without WITHIN THE RUINS, because with „Deliverance“ they add a huge progressive load to it and execute the craziest tempo changes and Breakdowns with changing vocals and crazy frickeligen chords, which rush through the musical scale. It really makes your jaw drop. You have to process that first. In any case, technically quite great cinema!

Too much

It is truly impressive how the men play their instruments according to all rules of art and the song structures partly take crazy forms. That is one thing. The other thing is that there is just too much happening on the whole material and I lose the overview. I have listened to the record again and again and actually it is difficult for me to keep some of the songs apart, because I miss a red thread or recognizable structures within the whole fireworks of the arts. So at least for me the soul of a song is lost somewhere.

Really strong

for me are the moments where the sound is not so pumped up. Thus, the song „Devil In Me“ pushes almost pleasantly „simple“ by the hearing. The song is an example where the otherwise very present lead guitar is used a bit more dosed. In addition, the song seems more stringent and more accessible, because it is not so overloaded as a whole. In addition, the melodic chorus brings in a nice touch. This is an example of recognizability. I also liked the song „RCKLSS“, which plays up quietly and restrained compared to the rest of the material. It develops a great atmosphere, gloomy and melancholic it moves forward track by track, with the lead guitar sounds blending in nicely in harmony and dancing on the thick fat bass lines until the lead guitar finally takes off for a mercilessly good guitar solo.

Result

WITHIN THE RUINS have dropped a mega bomb that lets all their arts and skills sweep over humanity in one big explosion with pressure and vehemence. Personally, it’s just too much of the high technical thing overall and a little less would have actually been more. Nevertheless, it has become a horny impressive album. As a fan of technically playful and intricate songs in this genre is a must buy anyway.

auf höchstem technischen Standard haben WITHIN THE RUINS (Facebook )aus den Staaten mit ihrem neuen Longplayer „Black Heart“ am 27.11.2020 ins Rennen geworfen. Die Männer interpretieren den Metalcore auf ihre spezielle Weise, indem sie hochgradig technisch ausgefeilt und teils schon recht progressiv zu Werke gehen.

Auf die Spitze getrieben

hat man es nun mit den neuen Songs. Ich muss zugeben, dass ich beim Hören des Albums hin- und hergerissen war. Einerseits war ich von den technischen Fertigkeiten total geflasht, aber auch zum Teil bei manchen Songs echt überfordert, dem ganzen zu folgen. Es prasselt so viel auf den Hörer ein, dass man gar nicht weiß wo man zuerst hinhören soll und man wird völlig überwältigt.

Der Opener „Domination“

macht direkt klar, wo der Bartel den Most holt. Hier wird gebolzt und geshreddert was das Material so hergibt. Allerdings schleichen sich hier und da mal cleane Chorusklänge ein. Der Song hat für mich aber noch eine Struktur, die ich nachvollziehen kann und besticht mitunter durch coole Rhythmen und prägnanten flinken Leadgitarrenakkorden, die wirklich weltklasse sind. Und man denkt bei sich, dass hier schon alles gegeben wird. Nein, da hat man die Rechnung ohne WITHIN THE RUINS gemacht, denn mit „Deliverance“ legt man allerdings noch ne gewaltige progressive Schüppe drauf und vollzieht die irrwitzigsten Tempiwechsel und Breakdowns mit wechselnden Gesängen und aberwitzigen frickeligen Akkorden, die nur so die über die Tonleiter preschen. Da klappt einem echt die Kinnlade runter. Das muss man erst mal verarbeiten. Spieltechnisch jedenfalls ganz großes Kino!

Zuviel des Guten

Es ist wahrlich beeindruckend wie die Männer ihre Instrumente nach allen Regeln der Kunst bespielen und die Songstrukturen teils irrwitzige Formen annehmen. Das ist eine Sache. Die andere Sache ist, dass mir auf das gesamte Material bezogen einfach zu viel passiert und ich den Überblick verliere. Ich habe mir die Platte wieder und wieder angehört und tatsächlich fällt es mir schwer einige der Songs auseinanderzuhalten, weil ich innerhalb des ganzen Feuerwerks der Künste einen roten Faden bzw. wiedererkennbare Strukturen vermisse. So geht zumindest mir die Seele eines Songs irgendwo verloren.

Richtig stark

gefallen mir die Momente, wo der Sound nicht so vollgepumpt wird. So brettert der Song „Devil In Me“ geradezu wohltuend „simpel“ durchs Gehör. Der Song ist ein Beispiel, wo die ansonsten sehr präsente Leadgitarre etwas dosierter eingesetzt wird. Außerdem wirkt der Song stringenter und leichter zugänglich, weil er im Ganzen nicht so überfrachtet ist. Zudem bringt der melodische Chorus im Refrain eine schöne Note mit herein. Dies ist ein Beispiel für Wiedererkennbarkeit. Gut gefallen hat mir auch der Song „RCKLSS“, der im Vergleich zum restlichen Material ruhig und zurückhaltend aufspielt. Er entwickelt eine tolle Atmosphäre, düster und schwermütig rückt er Stück um Stück voran, wobei die Leadgitarrenklänge sich schön harmonisch einmischen und auf den dicken fetten Basslinien tanzen, bis die Leadgitarre schließlich zu einem gnadenlos guten Gitarrensolo ansetzt.

Fazit

WITHIN THE RUINS haben eine Megabombe abgeworfen, die all ihre Künste und Fertigkeiten in einer großen Explosion mit Druck und Vehemenz über die Menschheit hinwegfegen lässt. Mir persönlich ist es insgesamt einfach zu viel des Guten und da wäre etwas weniger tatsächlich mehr gewesen. Trotzdem ist es ein geiles beeindruckendes Album geworden. Als Fan von technisch verspielten und vertrackten Songs in diesem Genre ist ohnehin ein Pflichtkauf.
