Scroll down for the original interview (in English)

Mein Interesse an Musik begann schon früh.

Du arbeitest offenbar schon seit 15 Jahren an deinem Soloprojekt.

Du hast sehr lange an diesem Projekt gearbeitet.

Was hast du an ihnen verändert? Was ist dein eigener Beitrag, deine persönliche Interpretation?

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

With the nyckelharpa at the heart of his music, JOHN STENERSEN combines ancient Nordic traditions with a distinctly dark and atmospheric sound. Known for his work with WARDRUNA and GÅTE, he has been developing his own solo project for many years, bringing traditional melodies together with drone textures, historical instruments and modern soundscapes. At the Midgardsblót-Festival, he presented the project live for the first time — alone on stage, but surrounded by a world of sounds and images.

What does Norwegian tradition sound like when viewed through a dark, modern sonic aesthetic? In this interview, he talks about his fascination with the nyckelharpa, the origins of his solo project, the unique atmosphere of Midgardsblót, and why now feels like the right moment to share his musical vision with a wider audience.

The Interview

Do you come from a (musical) family in which traditional music plays a role, or how did you first come into contact with traditional music?
No, I don’t come from a musical family. No one but me in my family plays an instrument, I’m the only one.

So was there a particular moment when you thought: I would like to play this music, too?
The interest for music started from a young age when I saw concerts and performances on TV of fiddlers and rock bands. I’ve always been drawn to the stage and music, I’ve always found that very intriguing. I think my first contact with folk music was through Annbjørg Lien and her album “Prisme”.

The nyckelharpa seems to be your instrument, as you have put it at the forefront of your solo project.
How did you come to play the instrument? Did you have lessons or a teacher? I read somewhere that you taught yourself to play the instrument.
I always wanted to play the fiddle, but I never found a teacher and it was too hard teaching myself that instrument from books, not knowing where to put your finger on a blank fretboard. It’s easier now with YouTube and stickers for your fretboard telling you where to put your finger, but back then I had nothing like that. I was at a festival in 2008 and there I met this Swedish man who talked about the nyckelharpa and I did not quite understand what it was, so he showed me a photo of it and the moment I saw that photo I knew that I can teach myself that instrument. So I searched it up on YouTube and I found one video of a woman playing the nyckelharpa and I loved the sound, because it sounds like a deep and dark Hardanger Fiddle.

So you fell in love with the sound. What happened next?
Two weeks later I drove to Uppsala to buy one. I got 15 minutes of instruction where he showed me how to hold the instrument and the bow, told me how it was tuned and showed me a scale. Then I got a pat on the shoulder and a “Good luck!”. I drove back to Norway and started practicing. It took a few years before I felt like I could say that I could play the nyckelharpa, but I got there in the end with a lot of practice.

You have apparently been working on your solo project for 15 years. How did the idea of developing a solo album come about? Does it have something to do with the instrument, given that it is traditionally played more as a solo instrument or accompanied by singing?
When I started my first band BERGTATT back in 2007 we always did instrumental songs, and I have always been composing so even on our first summer tour in 2009 we included some instrumental songs with the nyckelharpa as the main instrument. So that was when the thought of doing something solo started. So for every song I learned or every song I composed I always had the solo project in the back of my mind and I’ve been working on it on and off since then actually so it’s actually 17 years now that I think about it.

‘Tronsgårdhallingen’ – Roots in traditional music

You’ve now completed the project and the first song you released was “Tronsgårdhallingen”. Why did you choose this particular song to introduce your project? Do you have a special connection to it?
It’s a song I’ve heard for many years and it always makes people move. Either stomping their feet, dancing or in some way moving to the song, but I’ve never heard it in a dark arrangement, so I wanted to make that. That’s what I do with all my songs. I chose to start with this because it’s a well known traditional tune from Norway and I wanted to start my project with first showing my roots and honor the tradition by making my own version of this before releasing my own compositions.

The Midgardsblót-Festival is quite a special festival (at least from my perspective). Is it special for you as well? You have played there with WARDRUNA and KALANDRA, too, haven’t you?
Midgardsblót is my favourite Norwegian festival, it has such a good vibe. I have played there many times. I played there the first year with BERGTATT and again another year, and I’ve also played there with WARDRUNA and KALANDRA. This is also where I met Einar [Selvik, founder of Wardruna] for the first time, and I’ve also seen WARDRUNA play there before I joined the band.

A world of sound and images, and an enthusiastic audience

What does it mean to you to present your solo project there in particular?
I chose to release my solo project at Midgardsblót because it was the perfect spot for me to do it. I knew there were going to be a lot of people who were interested in this kind of music there, and I’m so happy about the response. There were people standing in line for over an hour waiting to get in. People were dancing, stomping their feet and clapping along to the songs so that was an amazing feeling! It went as well as I had hoped for! I got so many positive comments afterwards!

What was it like to stand on stage alone? You play additional instruments on “Tronsgårdhallingen”. How did you handle that during the show? Did you use backing tracks? What was the biggest challenge for you in that moment?
Standing alone on stage is something completely different than being on stage with a band, because you have no one to lean on. When I played this show I used backing tracks, so the only thing that was live was my nyckelharpa. I had created backing tracks with hurdy-gurdy, moraharpa, tagelharpa, harmonium, synth, frame drums and percussion from sticks, stones, bones and horns. I also created a video that’s synched to the backing tracks playing on a screen behind me. Because I’m only one person on stage it was important for me to have video to make it more interesting for the audience. It’s mainly drone shots of nature that a friend of mine made for me, and it really worked! I saw a lot of people watching the video so that was great!

You normally play in bands, so you have a direct comparison. From your experience, what is the biggest difference? Was there anything you hadn’t expected?
The biggest difference is that you have no one to lean on. No one is there with you if anything happens. You’re completely alone and you’re responsible for everything.

How did you perceive the audience’s reaction? What pleased or impressed you the most?
I was so happy when I saw people move to the music, and when people started clapping I felt I had reached them.

As you said, there was a video in the background. What role does it play? What is being shown, and which aspect of the music is it intended to emphasise?
Yes, there’s a video for every song synched to my backing track. It’s mainly drone shots of nature, but there are also some snippets of upcoming music videos. Some of them are only nature, and some of them tell a story. I will reveal more of that later as more singles are being released.

A few secrets

Is there anything you would fundamentally do differently in future shows?
I have a few secrets around this I’ll reveal later.

Secrets – I’m curious to see what they are. You have worked on the project for quite a long time. How has it developed over the years? How close is what you have presented now to the original idea? Yes, I’ve been working on it for a very long time and it’s 100% as the original idea. This project has been ready for many years, just laying in a drawer waiting for the right time to be released.

What was the decisive factor in making you take the project to an audience now, at this particular point in time? Did your success with WARDRUNA and GÅTE play a role in this?
Now was the perfect time as a lot of people now know me from these bands, so it’s much easier to get some attention around my music now compared to 15 years ago.

Unfortunately, I only know one of the songs so far. What are the other songs you performed and that will be on the album about?
All songs are instrumental. I’ll first release some traditional songs to show my roots and where I come from, and then I’ll start releasing my own music. As I’ve been composing music in some way on different instruments since I was 14 years old, I have a lot of music to choose from.

These traditional songs were passed down over a long period of time simply by being played, and each musician changed them a little. What have you changed? What is your contribution, your interpretation? Perhaps you could describe a little here what defines the songs, which instruments you have used, and how you create their distinctive sound.
Most of these songs have 2-3 themes. I have made a few themes myself to add to the songs and I have made a dark arrangement around the melodies. This arrangement consists mainly of old nordic instruments, but I’ve also added a deep dark synth. It’s mainly a dark drone throughout the songs consisting of Hurdy-gurdy, harmonium and synth. The pulse is a frame drum and the backbeat is a mix of moraharpa, tagelharpa and nyckelharpa. The percussion is a wooden shaker, sticks, stones, bones and horns. All of these instruments and sounds create a dark atmosphere around the nyckelharpa.

A sombre atmosphere – that’s how I’d like to listen to this music

“Tronsgårdhallingen” was and is traditionally played on the fiddle in folk music. When adapted for the nyckelharpa, the sound and the overall impression change. The music sounds darker and more sombre. One of your aims is also to convey a dark atmosphere. Why do you feel this suits the song better? Why does a darker atmosphere feel more appropriate to you?
I listen to dark music, I always have, so it felt very natural to me to create dark music. I also have never heard these songs this way before. This is the way I want to hear these songs myself, so I wanted to create the version of these songs that I like best.

How do you manage to preserve the tradition while also remaining authentic? Authentic in the sense that it is your music. Or, put another way: are songs that have been passed down through many generations timeless precisely because their basic structure remains intact, while each generation “colours” them in a way that reflects its own spirit of the age?
I think everyone who plays and uses these songs are tradition keepers. They all help keep these songs and the tradition alive. I hope to bring this music out of Norway and let the people of Europe discover these songs and this tradition.

A look ahead to the 2027 tour

You will be going on tour. Which countries/cities will you be performing in?
I plan to go on tour in 2027 and I’ll reveal the countries and cities later.

“Tronsgårdhallingen” by John Stenersen

John Stenersen launches his solo project with “Tronsgårdhallingen”

The Norwegian musician John Stenersen, whom many of you will probably know as a moraharpa player with WARDRUNA, unveiled his solo project on 5 August 2026 with “Tronsgårdhallingen”.
He has spent around 15 years developing this project and creating a new and distinctive sound.

The idea behind the project is to combine traditional Nordic folk music with modern arrangements, bringing it to the contemporary dance floor while also appealing to an alternative crossover audience.
For his first release, he chose one of the best-known melodies associated with the traditional Halling dance. The Halling is a dance featuring various established sequences of steps, with dancers sometimes incorporating highly athletic movements into their performances.

The origins of “Tronsgårdhallingen” can be traced back to Thorvald Tronsgård, a well-known and highly respected fiddler from Folldal. Folldal lies near the Rondane mountain range in the highlands of southern Norway. Tronsgård’s music shaped his home region for almost a century, and “Tronsgårdhallingen” is regarded as the most famous melody he left behind.

Preserving the traditional core while reinterpreting it

John Stenersen has retained the melody and reinterpreted it with a different instrumentation. While the piece was originally performed on a fiddle, Stenersen plays the melody on the nyckelharpa, giving it a distinctly different sound.
On a fiddle, the pitch is altered by the player’s fingers shortening the strings directly against the fingerboard. On the nyckelharpa, by contrast, the pitch is changed using keys.
The notes sound more defined, as their pitches are precisely determined by the keys. The nyckelharpa also owes much of its characteristic sound to its sympathetic strings. These are not played directly with the bow; instead, they are set into vibration by the notes being played, creating a continuous “drone effect”.

This alone contributes to the full, dark sound of “Tronsgårdhallingen”. The nyckelharpa is also accompanied by tagelharpa and harmonium, adding even greater depth and volume. A frame drum and various other percussion instruments, together with the tempo, provide the rhythmic accents that make the piece suitable for dancing.

From tradition to Nordic folk

In this form, “Tronsgårdhallingen” is both an interpretation of the traditional piece and a ‘Nordic folk’- track in its own right. The repetition of individual melodic phrases, the atmospheric layers of synthesiser, the drone of the nyckelharpa and the deep beats of the frame drum give the piece a dark and hypnotic character.
Stones, sticks and bones used as percussion instruments add an archaic quality.
At the same time, the track sounds modern and, thanks to its dynamic tempo, is surely just as danceable as the original.

There is also a video accompanying the track. It not only showcases the landscape from which the original piece originates but also reinforces the track’s distinctly ‘Nordic’ atmosphere.

I really like the way John Stenersen has approached and interpreted this traditional dance tune, and I am looking forward to hearing more from the project.

“Tronsgårdhallingen” is only the beginning. At the Midgardsblot Festival, John Stenersen will perform the piece live for the first time. He will then release further songs and embark on a European tour in spring and summer 2027.

John Stenersen startet mit „Tronsgårdhallingen“ sein Solo-Projekt

(english version below)

John Stenersen Launches Solo Project with Debut Single „Tronsgårdhallingen“

Many of you will probably know John Stenersen as the Moraharpa player of WARDRUNA.
On August 5, 2026, he will unveil his solo project with the release of „Tronsgårdhallingen“. The official premiere and release show will take place on August 13, 2026, at the Midgardsblot Festival in Borre, Norway.

While many fans know John Stenersen through WARDRUNA, his musical journey extends far beyond the band. He also performed with GÅTE during the group’s appearance as Norway’s representative at the Eurovision Song Contest and was the driving force behind BERGTATT, a project that fused traditional folk with a rock-based sound. Throughout his career, John Stenersen has collaborated with artists from a wide range of musical backgrounds, including KALANDRA, while also composing music for films and video games.

Most recently, I featured the album „I“ by THE THIRD CIRCLE, whose unique approach combines folk traditions with modern elements. Their use of ancient Nordic instruments—such as the nyckelharpa, moraharpa, tagelharpa, and hurdy-gurdy—creates a sound that is at once organic, experimental, and epic.

Contemporary Music Reinterpreting Traditional Elements

Now, with „Tronsgårdhallingen,“ John presents the first release from his solo project.

John says:

This is one of my absolute favourite tunes! It’s an old halling that originated in the mist-covered mountains of the Rondane massif in the heart of Norway. I haven’t found any evidence that this melody has ever been recorded on the nyckelharpa before. That’s why I’m convinced this release is a world premiere.

The tune is one of the best-known melodies associated with the traditional halling, a Norwegian folk dance featuring a series of established steps, often enhanced with impressive athletic movements performed by the dancers.
The origins of „Tronsgårdhallingen“ can be traced back to Thorvald Tronsgård, a well-known and highly respected fiddler from Folldal, a village located near the Rondane massif. For nearly a century, Tronsgård’s music shaped the musical traditions of his home region, and „Tronsgårdhallingen“ is regarded as the most famous melody he left behind.

Like much traditional folk music, halling tunes were originally passed down orally through repeated performance, preserving them from one generation to the next. Each musician who played the melody contributed their own interpretation and creativity, allowing the music to evolve while maintaining its core identity.
John Stenersen embraces this tradition with his own interpretation. His goal is to preserve the original character of the melody while giving it his own distinctive sonic identity.
To achieve this, he combines traditional instruments—including the nyckelharpa, tagelharpa, hurdy-gurdy and harmonium—with synthesizers, jaw harp and an extensive range of percussion. Alongside frame drums, he also incorporates sticks, stones and even bones, reconnecting with some of humanity’s oldest forms of rhythm and storytelling. The result is a sound that feels earthy, immersive and cinematic in equal measure.

The Philosophy Behind the Project

John Stenersen describes the philosophy behind the project as follows:

The goal is to bring these ancient Nordic folk songs onto the modern dance floor, reach an alternative crossover audience, and get the whole room moving.

„Tronsgårdhallingen“ marks the beginning of a project that aims to combine traditional Nordic folk music with contemporary arrangements, introducing these timeless melodies to a new audience.

Following the release show at the Midgardsblot Festival, he plans to release additional songs before embarking on a European tour in the spring and summer of 2027.

THE THIRD CIRCLE: „I“

„I“ : Pulsierende Klanglandschaften

„The 1st“, The 2nd“ und „The 3rd“

Eindringliche, spannende, erdige Klangspektren

THE THIRD CIRCLE released their debut EP „I“ on November 15, 2024 via ByNorse Music

The trio THE THIRD CIRCLE consists of Anders Odden (CADAVER, CELTIC FROST), John Stenersen (WARDRUNA, GÅTE, BERGTATT), and Birger Mistereggen, musicians with experience in very different musical directions.

A different relationship to music and a journey beyond the everyday

When Anders Odden became life-threatening ill in 2020, he developed a new relationship with music. This made him to want to make music personal, meditative and even therapeutic. He experimented with analogue synthesizers and collected natural sounds by making recordings, especially in the forest.

Then he met John Stenersen, who plays traditional string instruments such as the nyckelharpa in his bands. Now the question was how analogue synthesizers, bass and hurdy-gurdy or nyckelharpa sound together.

The last to join was Birger Mistereggen, who specializes in Nordic folklore. He added further sounds and rhythms with various percussion instruments, especially the rope drum, voice and jaw harp.

THE THIRD CIRCLE want their music to be understood as an opportunity to pause, reflect and immerse yourself in a journey beyond the everyday. And I think they have succeeded in doing this with the three pieces on the EP „I“.

„I“: Pulsating soundscapes

The three pieces lead us through landscapes of old and modern sounds that flow into one another, pulsate, condense and then float away to dissolve.
But they come back and develop into new forms. It is like the cycle of water in the sea, which evaporates after powerful movement, only to come back as rain and become part of the sea again.

The basis of the pieces of music is drone tones that simultaneously calm and build tension. The tones of the analogue synthesizer, the rhythms of the various percussion instruments and then the sounds and melody of the nyckelharpa are laid on these basic resonances.
The jawharp amplifies the basic tone or flashes out in many places from the broad overall sound.

“The 1st”, “The 2nd” and “The 3rd”

“The 1st” is permeated by a basic tone over which the melody of the nyckelharpa floats. The percussion instruments and the bass, on the other hand, form the solid ground.
The instruments are in dialogue and sometimes it sounds as if they are dancing with each other.

The repetition, which takes up the various elements in loops and circles and thereby changes them, is already very clear here as an essential element. The track builds up in this way until a dense and intense passage occurs at 5:30.
Then the melody from the beginning is taken up again. It is as if the sound opens up wide again until it slowly dissolves in the sound of the rain.

The second piece, “The 2nd”, begins with the sound of the rain, accompanied by a drone tone. This time too, the sound builds up slowly: the melody runs like a thread through this passage and the other instruments are gradually added.
The sound becomes denser and denser and almost vibrates. The distorted sounds expand the spectrum. And this combination of old, somehow familiar melodies and distorted sounds is really new and unusual in this form.

„The 3rd“ is a piece that is initially meditative in its calm. For me it is the most interesting piece on the EP because I really like the dynamics of the rhythmic elements and I find the simultaneity of dissonances and warm sounds very exciting.

Haunting, exciting, earthy sound spectra

„I“ is an exciting EP in many ways. THE THIRD CIRCLE have lived up to their claim of creating haunting and meditative soundscapes.I particularly like how they use the principle of repetition and variation. The sounds are vibrating spirals that rise and expand continuously. Be it by expanding the sound spectrum or by adding more and more rhythmic elements.
And so the tension increases, which is created by the interaction of the earthy sounds of the old instruments and the electronic synthesizer sounds. I think it’s great that both the synthesizers sound earthy and the old instruments sound spherical and dissonant.

From now on, I will also hear the jaw harp as an instrument in a different way. Because here it is performed with virtuosity, as a drone tone or as an accent that brings lightness.

Modern, psychedelic and yet deeply rooted in the concrete

Moreover, I almost always had the impression that I was listening to musicians who were trying things out and giving the music or the sounds the space to develop on their own. It’s like an exchange, a conversation – just without words.
Because there are no lyrics and the titles don’t give you any direction for thoughts, you have the opportunity to let the sounds affect you completely freely.

The sounds of the instruments and nature that are woven into the pieces are like memories of distant events and early longings that you can’t really grasp.

And yes, the pieces are definitely psychedelic, because they make it possible for the boundaries between yourself and the outside world to blur. Nevertheless, the connection with nature, the roots in the concrete, are noticeable.

The video that comes with this EP makes this visible in a different form.

There will be more EPs following the “I” EP. I am excited to see what happens next. And whether we will soon be able to see THE THIRD CIRCLE live. I imagine the ideal place to do this would be a clearing in the forest…

So, now take your time and immerse yourself in the video and, above all, the music!

THE THIRD CIRCLE kündigen ihr Debütalbum „I“ an

Bald kam Perkussionist Birger Mistereggen dazu.

(English version below)

Yesterday you could read the interview with Lindy-Fay Hella, in which we discussed her musical background and also about the new album.

Lindy-Fay Hella & Dei Farne released the album „Islet“ on March 22, 2024. It is the second album by the Norwegian duo, following „Hildring“ (2001). Already in 2019, Lindy-Fay Hella, known to many of you as a member of WARDRUNA, followed her own ideas with her first solo album „Seafarer“.

The music for „Islet“ was largely created during the COVID-19 period. Lindy-Fay Hella and Roy Ole Førland captured the thoughts and emotions that arose during isolation in their music. The lyrics came later. Lindy-Fay chose Portugal, a country she had not known before, to seek inspiration. She let things come to her and discovered a small island (which gave the album its name) that fascinated her. This small island in the ocean was a magical place for her and a symbol that even in a sea of loneliness, there are firm and magical places.

Melancholy and Magical Moments

That was my first impression of the album: it is melancholic, sometimes cold and unwelcoming, and then so close that it feels oppressive. At the same time, it is full of magical moments and sounds as if from another world.
Isolation may have also heightened the awareness of sensory impressions, which become particularly noticeable during a walk by the sea. The music captures the feeling of sun, wind, and saltwater on the skin, the smell of the sea, and the sound of the waves. And anyone who has stood by the sea during a full moon, when the water recedes with the ebb or returns with the flow, might have also perceived this as magical moments.
But not only the experience of the senses plays a role but also dreams – and in the spirit of folkloric tradition – mythical beings and mysterious places.

Spherical Sounds, Grounded Melodies, and Expressive Vocals

The effect of the music has much to do with the combination of different musical ideas and approaches. Here, electronic and folkloric elements have formed an unusual connection. Synthesizers and the varied and expressive voice of Lindy-Fay Hella form the basis and framework of the songs. This is filled with melodies played by traditional instruments.
The interplay and simultaneous contrast of the precision and spherical sounds of the synthesizers with the earthiness and warmth of the nyckelharpa, hurdy-gurdy, and harmonium create the tension and appeal of this combination. This allowed both loneliness and connectedness with the surroundings to be expressed.

Lindy-Fay Hella uses all the possibilities of the voice. Whispering, gentle melodies, ethereal singing that hovers above it all. But she also sounds biting, powerful, and eerie. Detached yet vulnerable, sometimes creating an oppressive closeness.
She is very sparing with the text. You can immerse yourself in the music and use the words and lines of text as impulses for your own thoughts.

Islet – Little Island

The intro „Sintra“ takes us to the beach. Water is gurgling against the small island. Voices sound urging and enticing from a distance. A melancholic, sad melody tells of loneliness. All of this sounds unreal, not of this world.

In „Dark Water“, synthesizers and Hammond organ span across the vast sea and endless sky. The drums are like the light on the horizon, at the end of the world, which is also the beginning.

Fairies, trolls, mythical beings – we cannot see them, but feel their presence or hear their whispers. This is what „Whisper“ is about. Whether these beings exist or not, whether one believes in them or not: every culture has stories about them. And with them come ideas, imaginations, questions, and answers that shape that culture.

„In our greedy times, where the cold hands of capitalism seize everything in sight, the existence of these creatures is threatened“

says Lindy-Fay

Hence, their whispering here is so insistent, reminding us of the whispers in the air, in the mountains, in the forest that we should perhaps listen to more.

Travel in you dreams

„Low Water“ tells of the tides, their energy and effect. When you stand on the shore of the sea, you see how the water brings things in and reveals others as it recedes. In a moonlit night, this appears both unreal and powerful. The stories, ancient legends of people and cities swallowed by the sea. And so, Lindy-Fay Hella’s voice dances with the melody of the hurdy-gurdy (played by John Stenersen) in the moonlight.

„Slowly The Light Dies Out“ is a melancholic song sung with a gentle, almost fragile voice. Spherical sounds accompany this like shooting stars appearing in the sky.

In „Like The Star“, the intense voice and energetic percussion encourage dreaming and reaching for the unknown. Stars burn out, just as dreams fade. But there are new universes to discover and more dreams to realize.

Multifaceted sounds, insistent drumming with many tempo changes, a somewhat eerie, partly distorted voice, breathing sounds. This is how tension and anger sound when nothing one does is right in the eyes of others. „Don’t Do Right“ – listen to yourself and do something not just because it is right for others.

„Furnas“ is relatively calm and meditative compared to the previous song. The gentle singing suggests that inner and outer worlds can be connected when one pays attention to their heart. Yet Lindy-Fay sounds so lost that one wants to call out: you are not alone, I am here!

As melancholic, partly sad, and full of loneliness as the album has sounded so far, it remains until the last note. But „The Fluttering Sail“ has, alongside moments where the pain breaks through once more, also reconciliation and hope. For there is always something that prevents us from going under. The song and album end with a calm heartbeat.

I pushed the time away to escape from this day

Lindy-Fay Hella & Dei Farne have not only shared their experience of isolation during the pandemic with us but also shown how important it is to listen to oneself, to perceive, to communicate, and to stay in exchange.
Something new has emerged from this. For this kind of combination of electronic and traditional music, of experimental forms with folk elements to create atmospheric sounds, I had not heard before.

What particularly touched and impressed me was the singing. Sometimes delicate, siren-like, then again energetic, commanding. Here I am directly addressed and involved in the thoughts and emotions. The directness also comes from the fact that the sound layers are complex and the voice and traditional musical instruments are left unadorned in their sound. The contrast between the earthiness and warmth of the traditional instruments and the precision of the synthesizers creates much of the tension in the songs.

This album has given a concrete form to the feeling of loneliness that many people are currently struggling with. Songs have been created that have opened up another sound space, which should be explored!

Interview with Lindy-Fay Hella (Lindy-Fay Hella & Dei Farne, WARDRUNA)

Hey Lindy-Fay, It is very nice that you are taking the time to answer a few questions for me. In March this year, you released your third album, “Islet.” As I prepared for the interview, I immediately had many questions. I am always interested in how someone came to music, and which influences (people, other musicians, experiences) contributed to that journey. And specifically in your case, what role singing/your voice plays.

Thank you very much Birgit for your interest in my musical projects and the latest album, Islet, created with Dei Farne.

The press release for “Islet” mentions, among others: for fans of Depeche Mode, Chelsea Wolfe, Kælan Mikla, Einstürzende Neubauten, Eivør, Ivar Bjørnson & Einar Selvik. This is a broad spectrum, ranging from electronic music to gothic, synthpunk, and folk in a broader sense. How would you describe your music (especially concerning the new album)?
Where does it stand in this spectrum?

I would like to use the words from some of our listeners who says Islet is a melancholic album. It certainly is, but not without a glimpse of light here and there.
Roy Ole Førland and I wanted to keep the kind of coldness and the feeling of being alone on this album. We created the music together by sending ideas to each other, mainly during the Corona times. „Islet“ is synth and vocal-based, since these are our main instruments and what we solidly used when creating. Drums (additional to the programmed ones), Nyckelharpa and Hurdy Gurdy have been added later, to get some kind of warmth and humanity to some of the songs. It is difficult for me to say where it stands on the spectrum, but maybe like dark, melodic synth and vocal-based music?

Walking in Circles to Boney M.

You started making music at an early age. I read that you grew up in a household with a lot of music and initially played a Hammond organ. What are the first ‚musical‘ moments that you would say shaped you or that you particularly remember?

I still remember when I was walking in circles around the heater that stood in the middle of the living room in my Father’s house, listening to music. It was in the late 70s and it was kind of a dance I guess, while keeping warm at the same time. The house was not isolated back then, you know. Boney M was one of my favourites and I still remember the pure joy when a song that I liked came out of the speakers. What got me into synths though, was Depeche Mode. I was sitting in a car, on a very boring road and suddenly „A question of time“ was on the cassette player. I was totally mesmerised to a degree that I can remember what part of the road we were at when the song came on. It was at a place called Isdalstø.

So Depeche Mode impressed you and sparked your enthusiasm for electronic music.
How do you feel when you listen to these songs today (if you still do)?

I am still listening to them, but mainly the earliest albums, with my favourite “ Black Celebration“ included. I am feeling that I am listening to something Avant Garde and something very unique.

Then the music of Depeche Mode and the impression that this is something unique was the reason why you wanted to play synthesiser? What fascinated you about the synthesizer that it still plays an important role today?

Yes, that is true. I also listened a lot to Vangelis and Jean Michelle Jarre though. It still plays an important role for me. I think it has to do with the many possibilities synths have, but also the fact that you can get a very precise, industrial sound and deep bases that are unique for this instrument.

„You have to sing!“

Your cousin Ingolf Hella Torgersen is said to be responsible for getting you to start singing. How or with what did he convince you?

It was actually Ingolf who has done some of the Drums on prior albums and my cousin, Roy Thomassen, who is to blame for my singing. He is like my older brother and I spent a lot of time with him when growing up. I was very shy when I was little and only played the piano, and never sang. He simply said: „You have to sing Lindy-Fay, one day you will travel the world and sing, I just know it!“ So, he played music to me with some of the great singers from the 50s-60s, Brenda Lee and Connie Francis among others and continued to do so, until I finally sang. The feeling of „speaking out“ was tremendous and I am happy that my cousin Roy did not give up on me.

The voice then increasingly became a means of expression/an instrument for you. What does the voice enable you to express that cannot be achieved with the synthesizer?

With the voice, you can deliberately use the resonance of your own body, to manipulate the sound. However, synths have been an inspiration for me vocally as well. On certain synths, there are filters you can use, to change the sound itself, how sharp or dulled you want it, the attack, sustain and release. All this you can do with the voice as well, except from the extreme low and high sounds.

During your studies, you sang in a punk band. You also had classical singing lessons and learned different singing techniques. Which experiences that you made during this time still play a role for you today?

Oh yes, it still does. My teacher, Benedicte Sjøvold, who I still visit from time to time, is excellent. She is one of the teachers at the Grieg Academy in Bergen. Although I was learning classical singing at that time I started with her, she was and is very alternative and accepted my different look at things. I do take with me the exercises of the voice, that are more classical, but for most part sing in another way.

ULLAN GENSER

You then sang in the duo ULLAN GENSER with Arne Sandvoll. Here, electronic music was already an important element. Why didn’t you continue with the project? I couldn’t find an album, but two cool videos.

Ullan Gensa is still existing, it is just that Arne and I are very much the same when it comes to making music. We both make a lot of things but are not tidy individuals. So, all the songs where I also play synth and harmonium are lying unfinished here and there on different computers. We plan to gather it up, mixed and mastered at one point though, especially after I was stopped by a guy outside a record shop a while ago, asking me „Are you not the one from ULLAN GENSA? Please, you guys have to release that stuff!“ He had been to one if our few concerts in Bergen at the beginning of 2000. ULLAN GENSA is also the reason why Arne and I are in WARDRUNA. Einar was in the audience back then too.

Since the early 2000s, you have been part of WARDRUNA. Here, you not only sing but also contribute to the melodies you sing. Why was it later important for you to release your own album? Were these ideas you had had for a long time that were just ‚ripe‘ to be realized at that time?

It is only because I finally felt the urge to release something since I needed to climb out of my comfort zone. I have always participated in different musical projects, so in a way, it was just the first time presenting something under my own name, the „Seafarer“ album. It was supposed to be an acapella, but I changed my mind. Some of the songs you can hear on Soundcloud in its raw state though, before going into studio with Herbrand Larsen.

„Seafarer“ and „Hildring

In “Seafarer,” released in 2019, I like the interplay and also the contrast between the electronic elements and your ‚organic‘ voice. And the longing and a kind of curiosity expressed in the songs. What longings found their expression here? Or did other aspects play a role for you? Where did the inspiration for the music and lyrics come from?

I have to be honest and say that the final push that made me make and release this album, was the suicide of my dear friend, Thomas Dakota. I was absolutely devastated, and the song „Seafarer“ is written to him. The whole album is in memory of him. Still, there are moments when I take a break in whatever I am doing at the moment, sending thoughts of “ wherever you are in the Universe dear Thomas Dakota, I wish you all the best. You are beautiful and will forever be loved!“

This is a sad and at the same time touching story. I will now listen to the album differently. Then, in 2021, “Hildring” followed. In my review, I wrote that the album seems to be a constant search for the unknown and is full of curiosity about what nature, the past, dreams, and the universe have to offer.
Did I understand that correctly? Do these aspects play a role? Are you a curious person?

You understood it perfectly and yes, I am a very curious person. The world has so much to it. More than it is possible to understand and that’s what makes it irresistible to me. I always want to see what is behind the hill or at the end of the Ocean. And a dream of mine would be to enter a Spaceship, travel through the Galaxies, and just look at stuff.

This year, “Islet” was released. I find it to be a very melancholic album. Melancholy has also played a role in the previous albums. But in “Islet,” it seems to be combined with loneliness, longing, and loss. “Slowly the Light Dies Out” sounds to me not only of loneliness but also of isolation. What does this song mean to you?

Haha, yes! You also find it melancholic, that’s just perfect! We have heard that from several of our listeners. The lyrics for „Slowly the light dies out“ is written by my cousin on „Islet“ for this song.

Fairy Tales

Have the lyrics been there first and then the music? Or is it that you have the music and then ’search‘ for lyrics?

Yes, I always have the melody before the words come. When making the melody for “Slowly the Light Dies Out” I was thinking of the story “ Little Match Girl “ by H.C Andersen. It is one of my favourite fairy tales and the only one that makes me cry every time I read it. Roy’s words fitted perfectly to.this state of mind and when telling him what the song was actually about, he said; “ But, that was my Mother’s favourite story as well.“ My beloved aunt, Kari, died some years ago, so it warmed my heart to hear that we shared the same favourite fairytale.

Overall, you have been ’sparing‘ with words on the album. Where do the other lyrics come from? What inspired you? What role do words play in your music/in connection with the music? To me, they have given shape to the emotions you express with the music on “Islet.”

A lot of time is usually used to get the right words for the album. I like to find simple and few words, since I feel that then it can grow different kinds of stories out from those words, depending on the listeners. Those words have to be just right though. I usually do long walks, just observing things, but also take inspiration from meeting with people and so on. And of course, the unknown, the mystery of the Universe. The impressions from a journey for example. It can take months before stories take shape in my mind.

In all your albums, your voice is the mediator, the connecting element between ideas, between rhythm and melody, between music and words. And at the same time, a distinctive, defining element. What particularly impresses me is not only the range and variability in which you use your voice but also the intensity and breadth. Sometimes your voice is very intimate, and then again it fills the space and sounds as if you are trying to bring something distant into focus. Does classical singing and the different singing techniques and forms help you with this?

Classical technique and training has helped to preserve and stretch the voice I think, but it is actually the freedom of totally breaking free from the Classical that has personally given me the most. I discovered by listening to Tribal music around the world, that the sound is more „direct“ almost like an extension of your speaking voice. Sometimes almost shouting, but not quite. In classical singing, this is not accepted, but to me the „tribal“ sound felt much more natural in my body. I appreciate all kinds and styles of voice production though.

Are traditions important to you?

It is important to keep traditions and treasure them, but also to be open to new impulses

Breathing, sound of voice and singing

There are melodies on “Islet” that sound folkloric not only through the instruments used. E.g., Nyckelharpa played by John Stenersen). For me, part of the tension in the songs lies in the combination of folk elements and electronic components. How much has folklore – be it stories or music – influenced or even shaped you?

I have a huge love for Folklore. This morning, for example, I was reading one of the lesser-known Norwegian Fairy Tales, collected by Asbjørnsen and Moe, a couple of 100 years ago. I’m also a huge fan of the Brothers Grimm and when I stay for a longer time in other places in the world, I ask people I meet if there are any traditional stories, about Ghosts and so on connected to the area. And food. To taste traditional food when travelling is something I always do. My grandfather was a great storyteller and whenever I joined him through the forest and out in the fishing boats, he told stories along the way about Trolls, Huldra, Draugen, Nøkken, the Fox, Ravens Tor and Odin, all kinds of things he could come up with. It has been and still is, a huge inspiration.

What I particularly noticed about “Islet” is how organic the breathing and voice sound. It is as if one is standing right next to you while you are singing. The singing and the lyrics sound dense and compact, bringing them very close to the listener. Was it important to you that the voice sounds so direct, ‚unfiltered‘?

Yes, that was important to both Roy Ole and I and that’s why we chose to work with producer Iver Sandøy again. He is a huge advocate for the raw aspect in both music and voice and we are certain that he will never polish the sound to get it „pretty and easier for the ear.“ Rugged, windswept and chilly, like the west coast of Norway on an Autumn day, is what we went for.

It is called Lindy-Fay Hella & Dei Farne. In the photos for “Islet,” you are only seen with Roy Ole Førland. Are the other musicians only “guests”?

We are a duo basically. Roy Ole Førland and I. However, we do have with us guests and this time it was Iver Sandøy as producer added synths, Sondre Veland for drums and percussion, John Stenersen played Nyckelharpa, Hurdy Gurdy and Jørgen Træen who added synths and was sidekick producer on a couple of the songs, and Roy Thomassen who wrote the lyrics on „Slowly the Light dies out“ and has co-written lyrics on “The Fluttering Sail”.

Where does the name “Dei Farne” come from?

„Dei Farne“ means in our dialect “ those who have gone/ travelled”. It is kind of an “Umbrella name”, to make sure whoever is our guest on an album or live, gets included under „Dei Farne.“
It is Roy Ole and I that are working together for most of the time though and for that reason and since guests are different, it is natural only to have the photos of us.

Shows in Denmark and at Midgardsblot

And finally: what’s next? Will you play concerts, or go on tour?

We will have a few selected shows this year, soon in Denmark, then Midgardsblot here in Norway. There will be some other locations most likely, before Yule, which will be revealed soon.

Thank you very much for the interview and have a great time at Midgardsblot!

You can read the review of “Islet” here tomorrow.

Was bedeutet dir dieser Song?

Was hat dich inspiriert?

Shows in Dänemark und beim Midgardsblot-Festival
