FIERCE DEITY (Facebook) aus Australien ist bereits Stammgast hier bei `metal-heads.de´. Wer mal die Suchfunktion bemüht, der wird einige Beiträge zu diesem Ausnahmekünstler finden. Jüngst hatte ich wieder ein Interview mit ihm (Link), welches wieder interessante Einblicke in die Person Jonathon Barwick bietet, der sich hinter FIERCE DEITY verbirgt. Die Interviews gewähren auch Einblicke, worum es in den Songs inhaltlich geht. Dahinter steckt nämlich eine ganz persönliche Geschichte.

Er hat dieses Jahr schon das Album „Unmasked“ veröffentlicht. Dies war aber eher eine spontane Idee, die zu diesem Überraschungsalbum führte (näheres im Interview). Dort hat er all seine letztjährig erschienenen Singles in ein rein akustisches Hörerlebnis umgewandelt. Dies verpasste den Songs einen ganz anderen speziellen Charakter und sind absolut hörenswert. Der letzte Output seiner Singleserie war der Song „A Ballad Of Heartbreak And Despair“, welcher für mich ein absolute Granate war. Dieser Song bot bereits eine opulente Spielzeit von acht Minuten, die aufgrund des tollen Songwritings wie im Fluge vergingen und ein echter Genuß waren. Davon könnt Ihr Euch gerne hier noch einmal überzeugen.

POWER WISDOM COURAGE

Jetzt setzt FIERCE DEITY mit seinem neuen Werk „Power Wisdom Courage“ die Reise genau an diesem Punkt fort. Das Album hat eine Spielzeit von knapp 33 Minuten, welche auf nur drei Songs verteilt wird. Jetzt mögen viele denken, dass das vielleicht ne langweilige Angelegenheit wäre.
Doch ich kann Euch versprechen, dass genau das Gegenteil der Fall ist. Es sind drei Songs, die es in sich haben und großartig sind.
FIERCE DEITY schafft es mit vielen geilen Ideen und hervorragenden Songwriting ein

episches Metalfest

zu veranstalten. Hören wir uns die Songs mal genauer an.
Los geht’s mit „Power“. Der Reisende leitet den Song mit einem Flötenspiel ein und es folgen dramatische Synthies und Chöre, bis es mit Wucht losbricht. Fette stonergeschwängerte Riffs bestimmen das Geschehen. Neben schöner Melodik und kraftvoller Rhythmik ist das megamäßige Keyboardsolo in Verbindung mit dem anschließenden famosen Gitarrensolo einfach nur phänomenal. Diese hammermäßigen Keybordsounds stammen von dem Virtuosen David Van Pelt (Band ACOLYTE), der hier als Gastmusiker sein vortreffliches Können einfließen lässt. Atemberaubend! Hab ich so in dieser Verbindung noch nie gehört und hat mich voll elektrisiert.

Stoner Rock Einflüsse

sind auch bei dem Track „Wisdom“ nicht zu leugnen. Der Song rockt wie Sau! Der Groove reißt Euch voll mit. Dazu gibt es noch echt coole Riffs. und hat einen mitreißenden Groove mit echt coolen Riffs. Das sind mal Töne, die man nicht ständig und überall hört. Das macht voll Laune und man wird förmlich eingeladen den Song aus vollem Halse mitzusingen. Nach einem sphärischen Interlude springt mittendrin erst einmal ein kraftvoll stampfender Instrumentalpart hervor, der voll reinknallt. Einfach nur grandios! Hier sorgt ein scharfes Gitarrensolo von Joe Haley (PSYCROPTIC) für beste Unterhaltung. Joe Haley hat die Platte übrigens auch gemixt und gemasterd. Dabei hat er einen fabelhaften Job gemacht. Der Sound der Platte ist richtig fett heavy und voller Power. So gehört sich das!

Der Monstersong „Courage“

ist einfach unbeschreiblich. FIERCE DEITY hat einen irren Job mit diesem Album gemacht. „Courage“ mit seinen 13 Minuten Spielzeit ist eine Offenbarung! Beim Hören des Songs sehe ich mich auf einem Berg stehen. Die unglaubliche Aussicht auf die Welt ist imponierend. Unter mir erstreckt sich ein unendliches Tal mit dichten Wäldern, sich windenden Flüssen und einem großen See. Ich sehe die Sonne als glühenden Ball in einem majestätischen Schauspiel am Horizont aufgehen.

Dabei fühle ich in mir eine Energie emporsteigen und denke, dass ich alles erreichen kann, wenn ich mit aller Kraft an meine Träume und Ziele glaube, an mich glaube und mein Ziel mit meinem ganzen Herzen und aus voller seelischer Leidenschaft verfolge. Ich fühle mich stark und großartig. „Courage“ ist ein monumentaler Kraftakt, der Euch diese Emotionen vermitteln wird. FIERCE DEITY hat das Thema perfekt umgesetzt. Hier vereint FIERCE DEITY noch mal all seine Stärken in einer opulenten Darbietung musikalischer Kunst. Für das grandiose Finale ist zum Abschluss Nick Disalvo (ELDER) als dritter Gastmusiker mit seinem Solo zuständig gewesen.

Fazit

Ich weiß, dass Jonathon Barwick mit diesem Album seinen Traum hat wahr werden lassen. FIERCE DEITY hat sich damit selbst übertroffen. Das monumentale Album „Power Wisdom Courage“ ist ein großartiges Abenteuer! Es ist die Reise einen Mannes, eine fesselnde persönliche Geschichte! Dies hört man in jeder Faser der Musik. Das Album ist Leidenschaft pur, ein epischer Kraftakt, dessen geniale Heavyness den Funken sofort auf den Hörer überspringen lässt.

FIERCE DEITY (Facebook) from Australia is already a regular guest here at ‚metal-heads.de‘. If you try the search function, you will find some articles about this exceptional artist. Recently I had another interview with him (Link), which again offers interesting insights into the person Jonathon Barwick, who is behind FIERCE DEITY. The interviews also provide insights into what the songs are about. It is a very personal story behind his songs so far.

He has already released the album „Unmasked“ this year. But this was rather a spontaneous idea that led to this surprise album (more details in the interview). There he has transformed all his singles released last year into a purely acoustic listening experience. This gave the songs a very different special character and are absolutely worth listening to. The last output of his singles series was the song „A Ballad Of Heartbreak And Despair“, which was an absolute grenade for me. This song already offered an opulent playing time of eight minutes, which flew by due to the great songwriting and was a real pleasure. You can convince yourself of that here.

POWER WISDOM COURAGE

Now FIERCE DEITY continues the journey exactly at this point with his new work „Power Wisdom Courage“. The album has a playing time of just under 33 minutes, which is spread over only three songs. Now many may think that this might be a boring affair.
But I can promise you that exactly the opposite is the case. These three songs are awesome!
FIERCE DEITY manages with a lot of cool ideas and an excellent songwriting to create an

epic metalfest.

Let’s take a closer look at the songs.
Let’s start with „Power.“ The traveler introduces the song with a flute playing and dramatic synths and choirs follow until it breaks loose with force. Fat stoner-infused riffs dominate the proceedings. In addition to beautiful melodicism and powerful rhythm, the outstanding keyboard solo in conjunction with the subsequent fabulous guitar solo is nothing short of phenomenal. These awesome keyboard sounds come from the virtuoso David Van Pelt (ACOLYTE), who lets his excellent skills flow in here as a guest musician. Breathtaking! I have never heard in this combination and has electrified me fully.

Stoner Rock influences

are also undeniable in the track „Wisdom“. The song rocks like hell! There are really cool riffs and it has a rousing groove. These are sounds that you don’t hear all the time and everywhere. This grabs you at once and you are literally invited to sing the song at the top of your lungs. In the middle of the song is a spherical interlude and a powerful stomping instrumental part jumps out, which really kicks in. Simply heavyl! Also here a sharp guitar solo of guest musician Joe Haley (PSYCROPTIC) provides for best entertainment. There I immediately automatically play my air guitar like the tasmanian devil. By the way, Joe Haley also mixed and mastered the record. He did a fabulous job. The sound of the record is really heavy and full of power. That’s how it should be!

The mega song „Courage“

is simply indescribable. „Courage“ with its 13 minutes playing time is a revelation! Listening to the song, I see myself standing on a mountain. The incredible view of the world is imposing. Below me opens up an endless valley with dense forests, winding rivers and a large lake. I see the sun rising as a glowing ball in a majestic spectacle on the horizon. At the same time, I feel an energy rising within me and think that I can achieve anything if I believe in my dreams and goals with all my strength and heart. I feel strong and great.

„Courage“ is a monumental tour de force that will give you these emotions. FIERCE DEITY has executed the theme perfectly. Here FIERCE DEITY once again combines all its strengths in an opulent display of musical art. For the grandiose finale, Nick Disalvo (ELDER) has been responsible as the third guest musician.

Result

I know that Jonathon Barwick has made his dream come true with this album. FIERCE DEITY has surpassed itself with it. The monumental album „Power Wisdom Courage“ is a great adventure! It is one man’s journey, a compelling personal story! You can hear this in every fiber of the music. The album is pure passion, an epic work of art, whose ingenious heavyness makes the spark immediately jump to the listener.

Gefühl, Melodie und Energie

sind nur drei der vielen Synonyme, die man man mit dem Power-Metal des Solokünstlers Jonathon Barwick alias FIERCE DEITY (Facebook ) aus Australien verbinden kann. Einflüsse von IRON MAIDEN, BLIND GUARDIAN und QUEEN finden sich in seinen Songs auf die eine oder andere Art wieder. Er hat nun nach einiger Zeit sein großes Projekt namens THE PATH mit seinem aktuellen Song „A Ballad Of Heartbreak And Dispair“ zu einem furiosen Ende gebracht. Ein epischer Song, der alles offenbart, was das Metalrockherz begehrt. Wenn man diesen Song hört, muss man ihn lieben! Aber dazu später mehr.

Eine Reise

Dieses Projekt hat Jonathon durch eine sehr schwierige Phase seines Lebens gebracht hat. Wieder einmal hat die Musik dazu beigetragen, die Seele eines Menschen zu stärken und dadurch den Widrigkeiten des Lebens zu trotzen. Ich wollte mehr über den bemerkenswerten Mann vom anderen Ende der Welt erfahren und ich habe mich mit ihm über seine Musik und sein Leben unterhalten. Ein sehr interessante Erfahrung, nicht nur musikalisch gesehen. Viel Spaß auf der Reise, für die man sich Zeit nehmen sollte. Ist nichts zum „mal eben drüberfliegen“! Denn es gibt viel zu lesen, aber auch zu hören!

Die Heimat

MH: Hallo Jonathon! Lass uns über Dich, Deine Geschichte und Dein Musikprojekt sprechen. Erzähl uns mal zunächst etwas Persönliches. Wo kommst Du her? Was ist deine Heimatstadt?

JB: Hey Dirk, danke für die Einladung! Ich lebe in der kleinen Stadt Hobart (Wikipedia ) im kleinen Bundesstaat Tasmanien in dem riesigen Land Australien. Mir gefällt es hier – es ist sehr ruhig und die Wildnis ist sehr schön!

Bedeutung der Musik

MH: Wie ist Dein Verhältnis zur Musik bzw. welche Bedeutung hat sie für Dich?

JB: Tolle Frage! Musik hat ohne Zweifel mein ganzes Leben geprägt. Die erste Musik, in die ich mich verliebt habe, waren die Beatles und die Blues Brothers. Ich war 4 Jahre alt und verlangte, immer einen Anzug zu tragen – meine Eltern haben es geschafft, mir vorzumachen, dass nur eine Jacke einen „Anzug“ ergibt, so dass ich glücklich war. Mein Vater spielte Gitarre, so dass immer eine in der Nähe war, aber ich bin Linkshänder, so dass ich sie nicht spielen konnte – ich hielt sie einfach vor den Spiegel, und das reichte für eine Weile. Musik war immer die größte Quelle der Freude in meinem Leben, und ich wende mich ihr in guten und in schlechten Zeiten zu.

Auf sich gestellt

MH: Stimmt es, dass Du als Solokünstler alle Instrumente selbst spielst?

JB: Ja, im Moment bin es nur ich. Ich hatte einige Gäste, die ein paar Sachen gemacht haben – Joe Haley von PSYCROPTIC spielte ein Solo bei „When My Lantern Fails“, und Andrew Hudson von HARLOTT singt mit mir bei „A Ballad of Heartbreak and Despair“.

Ich programmiere die Trommeln mit `EZDrummer 2´ und arrangiere die Tasten mit einem MIDI-Controller. Die Technologie ist jetzt erstaunlich – ich kann das alles von zu Hause aus machen.

Risiken eingehen

MH: Ist Musik Hobby oder verdienst Du damit Deinen Lebensunterhalt?

JB: Ich stehe kurz davor, meine Arbeit aufzugeben, um die Musik zu meinem Lebensunterhalt aufzubauen. Daher habe ich genug Geld gespart, um sechs Monate lang zu überleben, und ich werde diese Zeit nutzen, um mich richtig mit den Fans zu vernetzen und durch Patreon, Twitch und Bandcamp Umsätze zu erzielen. Ich muss diese Epoche meines Lebens damit verbringen, Musik zu machen, sonst leidet meine psychische Gesundheit jetzt und später. Ich weiß, wer ich bin und was ich mit meinem Leben anfangen möchte.

MH: Wofür steht der Name FIERCE DEITY?

JB: Für mich bedeutet er unbestechliche positive Energie. Ich bin zum ersten Mal vor 20 Jahren in dem (besten) Zelda-Spiel „Majora’s Mask“ auf den Namen gestoßen und habe ihn immer geliebt. Auch in der religiösen Überlieferung gibt es Fälle von wilden Gottheiten – eine wilde Gottheit ist jemand, der alles zermalmt, was sich ihm in den Weg stellt, um Erleuchtung zu erlangen. Das kann manchmal mehr schaden als nützen, und das passt gut zu meiner Person!

Der Reisende

MH: Du hast 5 Songs veröffentlicht: „The Path“, „Hearing Whispers“, „When My Lantern Fails“, „The Holy Fire“ and „A Ballad Of Heartbreak And Despair“. Alle Einzelcover haben den gleichen optischen Stil. Gehören die Lieder zu einer ganzen Geschichte?

JB: In der Tat! Ich nenne den Mann ‚Der Reisende‘. Ich habe versucht, die Songs eigenständig zu machen, da ich sie einzeln veröffentlicht habe, aber wenn sie zusammengefügt werden, bilden sie ein größeres Bild.

MH: Warum sehen die Cover wie eine Szene aus einem Computerspiel der frühen 90er Jahre aus?

JB: Die einfache Antwort ist, weil die Lieder alle auf irgendeine Weise von einzelnen Momenten aus meinen Lieblingsspielen inspiriert sind! Die lange Antwort ist, weil es sich bei diesen Liedern um FIERCE DEITY im Anfangsstadium handelt. Ich habe vor, das Artwork analog dem Fortschritt bei Computerspielen zu entwickeln.

MH: Worum geht es in der Geschichte? Und was hat Sie zu dem Projekt inspiriert?

JB: Jedes Lied kam von einem anderen Punkt auf einer Reise der Trauer. Im Alter von 27 Jahren (2017) wurde mir klar, dass ich im Leben völlig verloren war. Ich war ein klassischer Fall von gelernter Hilflosigkeit. Ich schrieb diese Lieder während einer Zeit, in der ich mich selbst in Ordnung brachte.

MH: Kannst Du uns ein wenig über den Inhalt der einzelnen Lieder erzählen?

FIERCE DEITY: „The Path“

stellt die Situation dar, wenn man ganz allein ist und niemand kommt, um einen zu retten. Es liegt eine große Kraft darin, das zu wissen! Die Menschen fürchten sich davor, allein zu sein und sie geraten in Panik. Aber wenn man die Einsamkeit wirklich umarmt, stellt man fest, dass sie eine WIRKLICHE Kraft in sich bergen kann. Ich habe die Liebesgeschichte von Geralt & Yennefer aus „The WITCHER“ als Vorlage verwendet und meine eigene Geschichte hineingelegt.

FIERCE DEITY: „Hearing Whispers“

ist der Kampf gegen die unerbittliche Depression. Man muss wirklich hart kämpfen gegen die lauten Stimmen, die einem sagen, man solle sich hinlegen und sich auf das winzige Flüstern konzentrieren, das sagt: „Versuchen Sie es noch einmal“. Ich habe die Sprache von „Dark Souls“ verwendet, weil das Spiel ein perfektes Beispiel dafür ist, wie ein paar Momente euphorischer Freude inmitten stundenlanger Schmerzen eine wunderbare und unvergessliche Erfahrung machen.

FIERCE DEITY: „When My Lantern Fails“

ist geradewegs Glaube und Religion. Mir gefällt die visuelle Vorstellung, dass der Geist ein Wald ist. Wenn man sich mit dem Glauben bewaffnet, verliert man sich nicht, wenn die Dinge schief gehen. Ich habe dieses Lied für alle meine Freunde geschrieben – ich liebe sie alle sehr und vermisse sie immer.

FIERCE DEITY: „The Holy Fire“

ist die Kehrseite der religiösen Medaille. Die Menschen haben schon immer eine gute alte Hexenjagd geliebt, und das tun sie immer noch! Auf meiner Reise der Trauer habe ich Jordan Petersons „12 Regeln für das Leben“ zweimal gelesen und festgestellt, dass ich mich in Fällen, zu denen ich kein Recht hatte, schuldig gemacht habe, Schuld zuzuweisen. Jordan ist manchmal zu intellektuell für sein eigenes Wohl, und die Botschaft seines Buches wird sowohl von seinen Fans als auch von seinen Verleumdern grob falsch interpretiert… klingt vertraut, nicht wahr? Kurz gesagt, ‚The Holy Fire‘ bedeutet, dass ich beobachte, wie ich selbst in der Vergangenheit anderen die Fackel gegeben und den Leuten meine Geschichte aufgezwungen habe.

FIERCE DEITY: „A Ballad of Heartbreak & Despair“

kam aus einer Grube der Angst, in der ich 3 Tage lang nicht geschlafen habe. Jeder Klang der Glocke in dem Lied steht für die Sonne, die an diesen 3 Morgen aufgeht. Die Angst ist ein verdammtes Monster. Ich bin so froh, dass die Resonanz auf dieses Lied großartig war – viele Leute haben sich über das Herz und die Überzeugung geäußert, mit der es vorgetragen wird. Die darin enthaltene Botschaft „Wenn ich noch einmal rückfällig werde, dann trauere nicht um mich“ ist meine Erklärung an die Welt, dass ich, wenn ich beschließe, wieder ein Versager zu werden, niemand Mitleid mit mir haben soll.

Neue Projekte

MH: Nun, dieses Projekt ist abgeschlossen. Hast Du im Moment noch andere Projekte?

JB: Ich schreibe auch Lieder in allen anderen Stilen – ich habe eine Sammlung von Singer/Songwriter-Sachen, die ich gerade unter ‚Jonathon Barwick‘ mache, aber ich habe keine Entwürfe für eine Veröffentlichung.

MH: Was sind Deine Pläne für die Zukunft?

JB: Für 2021 werfe ich mein ganzes Leben darauf fokussieren, Musik zu machen und eine Gemeinschaft um sie herum aufzubauen.

Neue Wege

MH: Ist vielleicht ein komplettes Album in Arbeit?

JB: Auf jeden Fall! Ich arbeite an einem 3-Track-Projekt namens ‚PWC‘, das großartig läuft! Das Artwork ist erstaunlich! Ich habe mit einem Künstler, den ich liebe, Kontakt aufgenommen, und er war für eine Zusammenarbeit, so dass das alles bald bekannt gegeben wird! Ich arbeite auch an einem Album, das ich im Moment nur ‚Fierce Deity 1‘ nenne – allerdings alles nur nackte Ideen.

MH: Wenn ja, wovon wird es handeln und was können die Zuhörer erwarten?

JB: `PWC´sind gewaltige Stoner-Grooves voller Power-Metal-Melodie! 3 Tracks, die zusammen etwa 30 Minuten Musik ergeben! Die Leute können zusehen, wie ich es im neuen Jahr live auf Twitch aufnehme!

Alles hat ein Ende,

so auch dieser Bericht. Ich kann jedem Metalfan, der auf intelligente variantenreiche Songs der alten Schule steht, diese Songsammlung nur wärmstens ans Herz legen. FIERCE DEITY macht klassischen Metal auf aktuellem technischen Niveau. Man wird viele Elemente sehr bekannter Bands wiederfinden. Die Songs sind durchweg auf hohem Niveau und besitzen alle einen eigenen Charakter, wobei der letzte Song „Ballad Of Heartbreak & Despair“ ein absoluter Traum ist. Das sind schon fast 11 von 10 Punkten. FIERCE DEITY hat eindrucksvoll bewiesen wozu er fähig ist. A journey

This project has put Jonathon through a very difficult phase of his life. Once again, music has helped to strengthen a person’s soul and thus defy the adversities of life. I wanted to learn more about this remarkable man from the other side of the world and I talked to him about his music and life. A very interesting experience, not only musically. Hometown

MH: Hi Jonathon! Let´s talk about you, your story and your music-project. Tell us something personal.  Where are you coming from? What is your hometown?

JB: Hey Dirk, thank you for having me! I live in the small town of Hobart (Wikipedia ) in the small state of Tasmania in the gigantic country of Australia. I like it here – it’s very quiet and the wilderness is very pretty!

Meaning of music

MH: What is your relationship to music? 

JB: Great question! Music has without a doubt shaped my entire life. The first music I can remember falling in love with was The Beatles and The Blues Brothers. I was 4 years old and demanded to be dressed in a suit all the time – my parents managed to fool me into thinking just a jacket made a “suit” so I was happy. My dad played guitar so there was always one around but I’m left-handed so I couldn’t play them – I just held them in front of the mirror and that was enough for a while. Music has always been the biggest source of joy in my life and I turn to it in the good times and bad.

Standing on its own

MH: Is it true that you are a solo artist and play all the instruments yourself?

JB: Yes, at the moment it’s just me. I’ve had some guests do some stuff – Psycroptic’s Joe Haley played a solo on ‘When My Lantern Fails” and Harlott’s Andrew Hudson is singing with me on ‘A Ballad of Heartbreak and Despair’. I program the drums using EZDrummer 2 and arrange the keys with a MIDI controller. The technology now is amazing – I can do all this from home.

Taking risks

MH: Is it a hobby or do you make your living with music?

JB: I am about to leave my job to build it into a living. Therefore I saved enough money to survive for 6 months and I’m going to use that time to properly connect with fans and provide value through Patreon, Twitch and Bandcamp. I need to spend this point of my life making music or my mental health will suffer now and later on. I know who I am and what I want to do with my life.

MH: MH: What does the name FIERCE DEITY stand for?

JB: To me it means incorruptible positive energy. I first came across the name 20 years ago in the (best) Zelda game ‘Majora’s Mask’ and always loved it. There’s instances of fierce deities across religious lore too – a fierce deity is one who crushes anything in his/her path to achieve enlightenment. This, at times, can do more damage than good so that fits my persona well!

The Traveller

MH: You have delivered 5 songs: „The Path“, „Hearing Whispers“, „When My Lantern Fails“, „The Holy Fire“ and „A Ballad Of Heartbreak And Despair“.All single covers have the same optical style with the same man in different situations. Do the songs belong to one whole story?

JB: Indeed! I call him ‘The Traveller’. The Songs belong to one story! I tried to make them stand alone as I released them one by one but when they are put together they form a bigger picture.

MH: Why do the covers look like a scene from a computer game in the early 90ies?

JB: The simple answer is because the songs are all in some way inspired by a moment from my favourite games! The long answer is because these songs are FIERCE DEITY in its early stages – I plan to evolve the artwork much like computer game artwork evolved!

MH: What is the story about? And what inspired you to the project?

JB: Each song came from a different point in a journey of grief. At 27 years old (2017) I realised I was completely lost in life. I was a classic case of learned helplessness. I wrote these songs during a period of sorting myself out.

MH: Can you tell us a bit about the content of each song?

FIERCE DEITY: „The Path“

is realising I’m all alone and no-one is coming to save me. There is great power in knowing that – people fear being alone and they panic but if you really embrace solitude you find there is REAL power in it. I used the love story of Geralt & Yennefer from The Witcher as lore and put my own story in.

FIERCE DEITY: „Hearing Whispers“

is the battle against unrelenting depression. You’ve gotta battle really hard against the loud voices that tell you to lay down and focus on that tiny whisper that says “try again”. I used „Dark Souls“ language because the game is a perfect example of how a few moments of euphoric joy amongst hours and hours of pain make an experience wonderful and memorable.

FIERCE DEITY: „When My Lantern Fails“

is straight up faith and religion. I like the visual idea of the mind being a forest. If you arm yourself with faith you don’t lose yourself when things go wrong. I wrote this song for all my friends – I love them all very much and am always missing them.

FIERCE DEITY: „The Holy Fire“

is the opposite side of the religious coin. Humans have always loved a good old witch hunt and we still do! On my journey of grief I read Jordan Peterson’s ‘12 Rules For Life’ twice and realised I have been guilty of passing blame in instances I had no right to. Jordan is too intellectual for his own good at times and the message of his book is grossly misinterpreted by both his fans AND his detractors… sounds familiar, right? In a nutshell, ‘The Holy Fire’ is me observing my past self putting the torch to others and forcing my own narrative on observers.

FIERCE DEITY: „A Ballad of Heartbreak & Despair“

came from a pit of anxiety in which I didn’t sleep for 3 days. Each bell in the song represents the sun rising on those 3 mornings. Anxiety is a fucking monster. I’m so glad the response to this song has been great – lots of people have commented on the heart & conviction it is performed with. The message in it ‘If I relapse once more, don’t mourn for me” is my declaration to the world that if I choose to become a deadbeat again don’t feel sorry for me.

End=Start from new?

MH: Well, this project is finished.  Do you have other projects at the moment?

JB: I write songs in all other styles too – I have a collection of singer/songwriter type stuff that I just do under ‘Jonathon Barwick’ but I have no designs on releasing it.

MH: What are your plans for the future?

JB: Für 2021 werfe ich mein ganzes Leben darauf fokussieren, Musik zu machen und eine Gemeinschaft um sie herum aufzubauen.

MH: Is there perhaps a complete album in the works?

JB: I definitely do! I’m working on a 3 track project code named ‘PWC’ that is going great! The artwork is amazing! I got in touch with an artist I love and he was all for a collaboration so that’ll all get announced soon! I’m also working on an album that I’m just calling ‘Fierce Deity 1’ at this point – all just bare bones ideas though.

MH: If so, what will it act on and what can listeners expect?

JB: ‘PWC’ is big stoner grooves packed with power metal melody! 3 tracks that total at about 30 minutes of music! People can watch me recording it live on Twitch in the new year!

Everything has an ending,

so this report. I can only warmly recommend this song collection to every metal fan who likes intelligent old-school songs with lots of variations. FIERCE DEITY brings you classic (Stoner-) Metal on a high level. You will find many elements of very famous bands. The songs are all super arranged and have their own character. The last song „Ballad Of Heartbreak & Despair“ is an absolute dream. I could give 11 out of 10 points for this song.
