Melodic Bombast Metal

from Finland present us the five men from CORROSIUM (Facebook ). The single „Bleeding Starlight“ with its bizarre video was already presented in May on `metal-heads.de´. Now at the end of the year they kept their promise and finally released the EP „Undertow“ with a total of four songs on December 4th, 2020. So of course I don’t want to withhold from you what else the guys have knitted together.

Catchiness

is the mission of CORROSIUM. They create songs that immediately stick in the listener’s ear. With „Bleeding Starlight“ they had succeeded in doing so at least once before. This song is carried by synths and the riffs are not so dominant in the foreground. However, it will create a harmonious atmospheric overall concept, which is able to catch the listener and take him away.

The band says about their new EP:

„We started making this EP from a different situation than the debut album. This time all songs were composed specifically for Corrosium, whereas the previous album had songs written before the birth of the band. Still we managed to keep the trademark atmosphere, melodies and low grinding riffs in the mix.

Bleeding Starlight was released as a single during the spring and it showcased the evolution of the band as more complex compositions and deeper lyrical themes. During the writing process for this release the world closed down. All shows and tours planned for the spring and summer were postponed or cancelled, so we had lots of time to polish the songs almost to infinity. We believe this quality can be heard from the EP.“

In the next song „The Day We Fall“ the guitars will be given more space. The riffs seem a little more present and the chorus of the song is as soft as butter and caresses the ear with longing and pleasure. It fluctuates between happy lightness and slightly darker intermediate passages. Beautiful tempi and mood changes determine the song. „Undertow“ also puts itself with mighty bombast in the stuff. But all in all it is not the strongest song of the EP for me. And I think by the way:

Well… there’s more I think

And indeed, the Finns really knock out a real smasher at the end with „I Remain“.All songs are beautifully arranged and know how to please. On the other hand I was missing the salt and pepper in the soup. So I was positively surprised and very pleased that CORROSIUM gave their sound that certain spice. The last song „I Remain“ inspires with a lot of variety in the vocals and even offers more aggressive interludes up to dark growls. For me this is the strongest song, because it gives a good overview of the potential of the band.

Result

CORROSIUM deliver good melodic bombastic metal that works wonderfully. Especially the melodic choruses stick and reverberate in your head for a long time. And before the whole thing starts to look too harmless, they show with the last song „I Remain“ what the band is still capable of. Seen in this light, the EP „Undertow“ is a remarkable performance that offers a small glimpse of what is still possible. I, for one, am very curious to see what they will come up with for the future.

Melodischen Bombast-Metal

aus Finnland präsentieren uns die fünf Männer von CORROSIUM (Facebook ). Die Single „Bleeding Starlight“ mit ihrem skurrilen Video wurde bereits im Mai bei `metal-heads.de´vorgestellt. Nun zum Ende des Jahres haben sie ihr Versprechen gehalten und nun endlich am 04.12.2020 die EP „Undertow“ mit insgesamt vier Songs veröffentlicht. Somit will ich Euch natürlich nicht vorenthalten, was die Jungs noch so zusammengestrickt haben.

Eingängigkeit

haben sich CORROSIUM auf die Fahnen geschrieben und wollen Songs erschaffen, die dem Hörer sofort im Ohr hängenbleiben. Mit „Bleeding Starlight“ hatten sie das jedenfalls schon mal geschafft. Dabei ist dieser Song von Synthies getragen und die Riffs treten nicht ganz so dominant in den Vordergrund. Es wird aber durchaus ein stimmiges atmosphärisches Gesamtkonzept erschaffen, dass es vermag den Hörer einzufangen und mitzunehmen.

Die Band sagt zu ihrer neuen EP:

„Wir begannen diese EP aus einer anderen Situation heraus zu machen als das Debütalbum. Diesmal wurden alle Songs speziell für CORROSIUM komponiert, während auf dem Vorgängeralbum Songs zu hören waren, die vor der Geburt der Band geschrieben wurden. Dennoch ist es uns gelungen, die charakteristische Atmosphäre, die Melodien und die tiefen harten Riffs beizubehalten.
„Bleeding Starlight“ wurde im Frühling als Single veröffentlicht und zeigte die Entwicklung der Band in Form von komplexeren Kompositionen und tieferen lyrischen Themen. Während des Schreibprozesses für diese Veröffentlichung schloss sich die Welt. Alle für das Frühjahr und den Sommer geplanten Shows und Tourneen wurden verschoben oder abgesagt, so dass wir viel Zeit hatten, die Songs fast bis ins unendliche zu verfeinern. Wir glauben, dass diese Qualität von der EP gehört werden kann.“

Im nächsten Song „The Day We Fall“ wird den Gitarren mehr Raum belassen. Die Riffs wirken ein wenig präsenter. Der Refrain des Songs ist butterweich und schmeichelt sich sehnsuchtsvoll genüsslich in die Gehörgänge. Der Song schwankt zwischen fröhlicher Leichtigkeit und leicht dunkleren Zwischenpassagen. Schöne Tempi- und Stimmungswechsel bestimmen den Song. „Undertow“ legt sich ebenfalls mit mächtig Bombast ins Zeug. Alles in allem ist er aber für mich nicht der stärkste Song der EP. Und ich denke so bei mir:

Na… da geht doch noch was…

Und tatsächlich hauen die Finnen zum Abschluss mit „I Remain“ noch mal nen richtigen Smasher raus. Auch wenn alle anderen Songs schön arrangiert sind und zu gefallen wissen, fehlte mir insgesamt noch das Salz in der Suppe oder der Pfeffer im Arsch. Daher war ich dann positiv überrascht und sehr angetan, dass CORROSIUM ihrem Sound noch mal die gewisse Würze verliehen haben. Der letzte Song „I Remain“ begeistert beim Gesang mit viel Abwechslung und bietet sogar aggressivere Einlagen bis hin zu Growls. Für mich ist das der stärkste Song, denn er zeichnet ein gutes Bild vom Potential der Band.

Fazit

CORROSIUM liefern guten melodischen bombastischen Metal, der wunderbar funktioniert. Vor allem die melodischen Refrains bleiben hängen und hallen noch lange im Kopf nach. Und bevor das ganze beginnt zu harmlos zu wirken, zeigen sie mit dem letzten Song „I Remain“, was noch alles in der Band steckt. So gesehen ist die EP „Undertow“ eine bemerkenswerte Darbietung, die einen kleinen Ausblick dessen bietet, was noch möglich ist. Ich jedenfalls bin sehr gespannt, was man sich für die Zukunft einfallen lässt.
