von FLOTSAM AND JETSAM (Homepage, Facebook) aus Arizona erfreut die Fans weltweit seit Mitte der 80´er Jahre. Damals war es das erste Album „Doomsday For The Deceiver“, das direkt Begeisterungsstürme bei den Metalfans auslöste. Auf dem Cover ist das schnuckelige Monster Flotzilla in seiner Urversion zu sehen. Angeblich wurde das Monster von FLOTSAM & JETSAM erschaffen, um dem Teufel gehörig in den Arsch zu treten und die Band vor satanischen Einflüssen zu beschützen. Dies würde auch das Cover vom ersten Album erklären.

Leider blieb der Band lange der ganz große Erfolg verwehrt. So richtig erklären lässt sich das eigentlich nicht. Denn FLOTSAM AND JETSAM machen verdammt geile Mucke und der Sänger Eric A. Knutson gehört zweifellos mittlerweile zu den besten Stimmen in diesem Genre. Wie bei fast allen Bands mit so einer langen Historie gab es ein bewegtes Bandleben.

Sogar Sänger Eric A.K. verließ die Band 2001 für einige Zeit, um eine Country & Western Band zu gründen. Grund dafür war der lange ausbleibende Erfolg für die Band, wodurch sich in Eric eine ungeheure Frustration aufstaute, die ihn schließlich vorerst mental in die Knie zwang und er der Metalwelt den Rücken kehrte. Er fand zu dieser Zeit vollends die Erfüllung in seiner Familie. Doch „Metal is forever“ und er kehrte nach wenigen Jahren zur Band zurück! Zwei Jahre nach dem letzten erfolgreichen Longplayer „The End Of Chaos“ folgt nun bereits das 15. Album…

„Blood In The Water“,

welches am 04.06.2021 über AFM Records veröffentlicht wird . Die erste Single „Burn The Sky“ gab es hier schon bei `metal-heads.de´ zu bestaunen und der Song brennt so heiß wie mein Kohlegrill im Sommer. Und es duftet und schmeckt so geil wie ein Rip-Eye-Steak, welches über den heißen Kohlen brutzelt. Eric A.K. ist in absoluter Höchstform und singt alles in Grund und Boden. Seine charakteristische Stimme erkennt man sofort auf Anhieb. Der Mann hat Power in der Stimme und brilliert auch in den melodisch epischen Ausflügen. Auch wenn die Mannen schon 35 Jahre im Geschäft sind, ist von Altersschwäche oder Schwermut nicht die geringste Spur. FLOTSAM AND JETSAM haben immer noch gehörig Pfeffer im Arsch und sprühen vor Energie. Und dabei zünden sie eine kreative Ideenbombe, die mir zeigt:

Melodien und Power

gibt es ohne Ende auf „Blood In The Water“. Moderner Thrash-Metal in Höchstform, die FLOTSAM AND JETSAM hier präsentieren. Auf dem Album gibt es satte 12 Killertracks, die es in sich haben.

All Killers! No Fillers!

Es ist einfach eine Freude die Lieder zu genießen, auch wenn mal einen Gang runtergeschaltet wird und sich dann eine stimmungsvolle Power-Ballade wie „Cry For The Dead“ offenbart. Ich möchte diesen Track jetzt aber nicht als Ruhepol bezeichnen, denn Schmackes hat der Song trotzdem. Im großen und ganzen ist Flotzilla aber dann doch recht hemmungslos unterwegs. Da wird auf monstermäßig die Schießbude befeuert, der Bass erzeugt mächtige Wellen und die Gitarrensaiten peitschen das Wasser auf.

So sorgt auch der Song „Brace For The Impact“ für rigorose Dynamik, indem dieser wie ein ausgewachsener Hagelsturm über den Hörer hereinbricht und für fetzige Einschläge sorgt.

„Dragon“

ist für mich einer der ganz besonderen Songs auf dem Album. Nicht nur, weil er abgeht wie ne verrückte Wildsau oder weil er wieder mit einem genialen Chorus aufwartet, sondern weil Eric A.K. ein nettes kleines Gimmick beim Gesang eingebaut hat. Diese gesangliche Tonfolge „Woahoo Oohoo O Oho“ (oder so ähnlich) vor dem eigentlichen Chorus bringt irgendwie nen coolen Kick in den Song und vor allem live könnte man zusammen mit dem Publikum ein schönes Zusammenspiel starten.

„Blood In The Water“

macht ebenfalls keine Gefangenen und prescht straight nach vorne. Eingestreute maschinengewehrartigen Drumsalven befeuern den Song noch zusätzlich. Auch ein tolles Beispiel dafür, was der Drummer hier für eine hervorragende Arbeit leistet. In der Tat begeistern alle Beteiligten auf einem hohen spielerischen Niveau und gehen so unerbittlich zu Werke wie ein Hai im Blutrausch.

Fazit

Ich hatte es gehofft und die Singles vorab stützten meine Hoffnung. Und jetzt, da ich das ganze Album hören durfte, muss ich feststellen, dass meine Hoffnung nicht enttäuscht wurde. Mit „Blood In The Water“ übertreffen FLOTSAM AND JETSAM sich selbst und erschaffen sich ein Denkmal.

Dabei setzen FLOTSAM AND JETSAM nicht nur auf hemmungsloses Thrashing, sondern paaren die Songs mit traumhaften melodischen Akkorden und Gesangslinien, die sich mit druckvoller Power wie heiß glühendes geschmolzenes Metall um die Gehörwindungen legen und sich dauerhaft im Gehirn festsetzen.

Damit lassen sie weiterhin keinen Zweifel an folgender Tatsache:

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM gehören mehr als verdient zur Topliga des Thrash-Metal!

of FLOTSAM AND JETSAM (Homepage, Facebook) from Arizona has been delighting fans worldwide since the mid-80’s. At that time it was the first album „Doomsday For The Deceiver“, which directly caused storms of enthusiasm among the metal fans. On the cover you can see the cute monster Flotzilla in his first version.

Unfortunately, the band was denied the big success for a long time. This can’t really be explained, because FLOTSAM AND JETSAM make damn cool music and and singer Eric A. Knutson has developed into one of the best voices in this genre. As with almost all bands with such a long history, there was an eventful band life.

Even singer Eric AK left the band for some time in 2001 to form a country & western band. The reason for this was the lack of success for the band for a long time, which caused a tremendous frustration to build up in Erik, which finally brought him to his knees mentally for the time being and he turned his back on the metal world. He found complete fulfillment in his family at this time. But Metal is forever! He returned to the band few yeras later! And now, two years after the last successful longplayer „The End Of Chaos“ follows the 15th album…

„Blood In The Water“.

The first single „Burn The Sky“ was already available here at `metal-heads.de‘ and the song burns as hot as my coal grill in summer. And it smells and tastes as a rip-eye steak sizzling on the fire. Eric A.K. is in absolute top form and sings everything into the ground. His characteristic voice is immediately recognizable. Power in the voice with epic excursions. Even though the men have been in the business for 35 years, there is not the slightest trace of old age or droopiness. FLOTSAM AND JETSAM still have a lot of pepper in their ass and are bursting with energy. And at the same time they ignite a creative idea bomb that shows me:

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM are still really up for asskicking Thrash-Metal!

Melody and Power

is given everytime on „Blood In The Water“. Modern thrash metal in top form, which FLOTSAM AND JETSAM present here. On the album there are a whopping 12 killer tracks that leave nothing to miss.

All Killers! No Fillers!

It’s just a pleasure to enjoy the songs, even if you shift down a gear and then an atmospheric power ballad like „Cry For The Dead“ applies. But I don’t want to call this track a resting place now, because the song has to offer power anyway. On the whole, Flotzilla goes quite merciless through the bloody water. The drums are firing like hell, the bass creates powerful waves and the guitar strings whip up the water.

Thus, the song „Brace For The Impact“ also provides rigorous dynamics, as this breaks over the listener like a full-blown hailstorm and provides wild impacts.

„Dragon“

is for me one of the special songs on the album. Not only because it goes like hell or because it again comes up with an ingenious chorus, but because Eric A.K. has built in a nice little gimmick in the vocals. This vocal tone sequence „Woahoo Oohoo O Oho“ (or something like that) before the chorus somehow brings a cool feature into the song and especially live you could start a nice interaction together with the audience.

The title track „Blood In The Water“ also takes no prisoners and rushes straight forward. Interspersed machine-gun-like drum salvos fire the song even more. Also a great example of what the drummer does an excellent job on the whole album. In fact, everyone inspires at a high level of playfulness and goes to work as relentlessly as a shark in a blood frenzy.

Result

I had hoped so and the singles in advance supported my hope. And now that I was allowed to listen to the whole album, I must say that my hope was not disappointed. With „Blood In The Water“ FLOTSAM AND JETSAM surpass themselves and create a monument.

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM don’t only rely on reckless thrashing, but pair the songs with fantastic melodic chords and vocal lines. These wrap themselves around the auditory coils like hot glowing molten metal and permanently connect with your brain.

Therefor they leave no doubt about the following fact:

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM belong more than deserved to the top league of Thrash-Metal!
