I had in the last days before writing this review. It was impossible for me to look at the sky and I couldn’t look into anyone’s eyes for days. I could only have drinks with a straw. My sense of hearing was bothered by a constant beeping. What had happened? NO RETURN (Facebook )had happened with their new album „LIVE XXX“.

It brought back memories of the 90’s, when I spent my weekends tinkering through the metal and rock temples of the so called „Ruhrpott“. My parents always expressed their displeasure when I couldn’t lift my head at Sunday family breakfasts. I couldn’t lift my head at Sunday family breakfasts when I tried to eat my breakfast in a halfway dignified way with my neck muscles destroyed and my skull hanging down. „What did you do?“ my parents asked. I could only answer: „You wouldn’t understand!

How could they, even as „normal“ people, understand that one tries for hours to shake the head off his shoulders at deafening volume. When I once dropped the word „headbanging“, I only looked into baffled questioning faces.

In the 90’s NO RETURN also released their debut album „Psychological Torment“, which was produced in Germany at that time. The last album „The Curse Within“ was released in 2017, and NO RETURN have been making a name for themselves in France for 3 decades

It is something special when you release your first live album after thirty years. This is also how guitarist Alain Clément sees it:

„Live XXX“ is the first live album in the history of the band. People have been asking us for it for a long time and we are very happy to finally be able to release it. We are very excited by the release of this live concert because it really shows the energy and aggressiveness of NO RETURN on stage

is the motto of NO RETURN. They don’t take prisoners, but push mercilessly and without consideration of losses with full throttle. They present a brutal mixture of Thrash- and Death-Metal with an unparalleled energy. Without a doubt they succeed to unleash this energy on the live stage. NO RETURN bolt through the songs with an insane vehemence, that it just rattles. They play on a very high technical level, which is also revealed in the video of the song „The Crimson Rider“.

Rest periods

is only available on the album when you press the pause button. Otherwise you can freak out during the music and then you will have the same fate as me. Sometimes you forget that this is a live album. This is partly because of the perfect sound and the flawless performance. But on the other hand the live atmosphere is too much in the background for me. Perhaps more could have been made of it.

Result

„Live XXX“ is an impressive history of three decades of music and those who still don’t know the group will get a concentrated load of deadly thrash fireworks to your ears. Fans of these music genres could strike without hesitation and tear their necks to shreds with the music.

hatte ich in den letzten Tagen hinter mir. Ich sah den Himmel nicht mehr und konnte auch tagelang niemandem in die Augen sehen. Getränke konnte ich nur noch mit einem Strohhalm zu mir nehmen. Mein Gehörsinn wurde von einem ständigen Piepsen belästigt. Was war passiert? NO RETURN (Facebook ) waren passiert, und zwar mit ihrem neuen Live-Album „LIVE XXX“.

Es wurden Erinnerungen wach an Zeiten aus den 90’er Jahren, wo ich am Wochenende durch die Metal-und Rocktempel im Ruhrgebiet getingelt bin. Meine Eltern äußerten immer wieder ihren Unmut, wenn ich am sonntäglichen Familienfrühstück den Kopf nicht heben konnte als ich versuchte mit hängendem Schädel mein Frühstück halbwegs würdevoll zu mir zu nehmen. „Was hast du denn gemacht?“ wurde ich gefragt. Darauf konnte ich nur antworten: „Das würdet Ihr nicht verstehen!“

Wie sollten sie auch als „normale“ Menschen verstehen, dass man bei ohrenbetäubender Lautstärke stundenlang versucht sich die Birne von den Schultern zu schütteln. Als ich mal das Wort „Headbanging“ fallen ließ, sah ich nur in ratlose fragende Gesichter.

In den 90’er Jahren brachten auch NO RETURN ihr Debütalbum “Psychological Torment” raus, welches damals in Deutschland produziert wurde. Das letzte Album „The Curse Within“ erschien 2017. So machen NO RETURN aus Frankreich seit 3 Dekaden

Es ist schon was besonderes, wenn man nach dreißig Jahren sein erstes Live-Album veröffentlicht. So sieht es auch Gitarrist Alain Clément:

„Live XXX“ ist das erste Live-Album in der Geschichte der Band. Die Leute haben uns schon lange darum gebeten und wir freuen uns sehr, es endlich veröffentlichen zu können. Wir freuen uns sehr über die Veröffentlichung dieses Live-Konzerts, denn es zeigt wirklich die Energie und Aggressivität von NO RETURN auf der Bühne.

ist die Devise von NO RETURN. Sie machen keine Gefangenen, sondern preschen gnadenlos und ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste mit Vollgas drauflos. Dabei präsentieren sie eine brutale Mischung aus Thrash-und Death-Metal mit einer durchschlagenden Energie, die ihresgleichen sucht. Zweifelsohne schaffen sie es auch diese Energie auf der Live-Bühne zu entfesseln. NO RETURN bolzen sich mit einer wahnsinnigen Vehemenz durch die Songs, dass es nur so scheppert. Hierbei spielt man auf einem technisch sehr hohen Niveau, was auch das Video von dem Song „The Crimson Rider“ offenbart.

Ruhepausen

gibt es auf dem Album nur, wenn Ihr die Pausetaste drückt. Ansonsten könnt Ihr bei der Mucke durchweg ausrasten und dann wird es Euch so ergehen wie mir. Man vergisst manchmal, dass es sich um ein Live-Album handelt. Das liegt zum einen an dem einwandfreien Sound und der astreinen Darbietung. Zum anderen ist mir aber die Live-Atmosphäre auf das Publikum bezogen ist mir insgesamt betrachtet zu sehr im Hintergrund. Da hätte man vielleicht mehr rausholen können.

Fazit

„Live XXX“ ist eine beeindruckende Historie aus drei Jahrzehnten Musik und wer die Gruppe immer noch nicht kennt, der bekommt hier eine geballte Ladung deathiges Thrash-Feuerwerk auf die Ohren geknallt. Fans dieser Musikrichtungen könnten bedenkenlos zuschlagen und sich bei der Mucke den Nacken zerfetzen.
