Symphonic Death Metal

AEPHANEMER (Facebook) sind ein Quartett aus Toulouse in Frankreich und bewegen sich im zur Zeit sehr belebten Meer des Symphonic Metal. Ein Glück, dass die Erscheinungsformen der klassischen Musik sehr mannigfaltig sind. Denn so ergeben sich quasi unendlich viele Möglichkeiten den symphonischen Metal ganz individuell und unterschiedlich zu interpretieren. Das Album „A Dream Of Wilderness“ kommt diese Woche Freitag am 19.11.2021 auf den Markt.

Jedenfalls dürfte das Cover das erste seiner Art im Bereich Death Metal sein, welches ein Wildschwein darstellt. Die Darstellung in seiner speziellen abstrakten Gestaltung unterstreicht die künstlerische Freiheit, die sich letztlich auch in der Musik abzeichnet.

Besonderheiten

Ein charakteristisches Merkmal bei AEPHANEMER ist die knurrende gutturale Stimme von Sängerin Marion Bascoul, die die alleinige Gesangshoheit innehat. Die Growls bewegen sich im höheren Tonbereich. Abweichungen in andere Gesangsbereiche sind eher die Ausnahme. Manche wird dies freuen, doch bin ich der Meinung, dass ein wenig mehr Abwechslung diesbezüglich der Band super zu Gesicht stehen würde. Dies Abwechslung blitzt hin und wieder kurz in manchen Songs auf. Was ich damit meine, zeigen AEPHANEMER z.B. in der ersten Single „Panta Rhei“.

Hochmelodisch, aber auch wild und ungestüm

wirbeln sie mit ihrer Musik umher und setzen damit ihren Albumtitel „A Dream Of Wilderness“ passend um. Die Melodik entsteht nicht nur aus den symphonischen Elementen, sondern entspringen zum größten Teil aus dem Zusammenspiel der beiden Gitarren. Hier wird Euch eine fingerfertige Kunstform dargeboten, die man getrost als höchst professionell bezeichnen kann. Bemerkenswert ist dabei, dass Marion als Sängerin auch noch eine der beiden Gitarre bespielt. Sie hat also ordentlich zu tun. Wie außergewöhnlich hochwertig das Gitarrenspiel funktioniert, zeigen AEPHANEMER gleich zu Beginn von „Pantha Rhei“, wo einem die flinken Leads von Martin Hamiche direkt durch die Ohren fliegen. Wunderbar gemacht!

Was mir bei diesem Song zudem sehr gut gefällt, sind eben die kleinen gesanglichen Überraschungen in Form von cleanen Vocals. Marion sagte mal in einem Interview, dass die cleanen Vocals für sie eine größere Herausforderung bedeuten würden. Aber ich finde, dass sie in diesem Bereich ihre Sache ebenfalls sehr gut macht. So einen eingestreuten lieblichen Part, der in Minute 02:39 ganz kurz aufblitzt, finde ich eine feine Sache und hätte sogar noch einige Momente länger dauern können. Auch die Doppelung von Marions Stimme im Chorus kommt echt gut rüber.

Imponierend

ist das Ganze auf jeden Fall und die Songs sind allesamt sehr dynamisch umgesetzt.

„Strider“ ist einer der Songs mit vielen Orchesteranteilen, wodurch er seinen sehr epischen Touch bekommt. Bei diesem Song übernehmen die Synthies in einer ausgedehnten Sequenz auch mal ganz allein das Ruder. Das hört sich schon schön an, aber die symphonischen Samples könnten auf dem Album insgesamt noch organischer klingen. Ein echtes Orchester würde dem Sound noch mehr Seele verleihen. Vielleicht wird das zukünftig mal eine Option bei AEPHANEMER.

Titeltrack „A Dream Of Wilderness“ auf, bei dem eine solche Sequenz ebenfalls eingebaut wurde. Ansonsten besticht auch der Titeltrack durch eine tolle Dynamik mit einem spannenden Songaufbau.

„La Radeau de la Méduse“ zeigt auch mal wieder den Einsatz anderer Vocals. Zudem hat der Song tolle Rhythmuswechsel zu verzeichnen und überdies ist der Part mit dem Blastbeatgewitter im Zusammenspiel mit der zarten cleanen Voice von Marion sehr erfrischend. Exzellenter Song!

Kommen wir zu der zweiten Single „Antigone“, die gleichfalls mit schnellen Leads einen fulminanten Einstieg bietet. Insgesamt bietet auch dieser Song eine hervorragende Demonstration von der fantastischen Gitarrenarbeit. Da haben sich AEPHANEMER definitiv sehr weiterentwickelt.

Fazit

AEPHANEMER zelebrieren auf ihrem Album “ A Dream Of Wilderness“ furiosen Death Metal, der mit melodischer Wildheit begeistert. Alles in allem eine beachtliche Vorstellung, die die hohen Qualitätsansprüche der Band hervorhebt. Das neue Album ist der Sprung auf die nächste Stufe. Ich bin mir allerdings sicher, dass AEPHANEMER ihr Potential noch lange nicht ausgeschöpft haben und so werden AEPHANEMER garantiert noch andere Ebenen der musikalischen Kunst erklimmen.

Characteristics

A characteristic feature of AEPHANEMER is the growling guttural voice of singer Marion Bascoul, who holds the sole vocal authority. The growls are in the higher tonal range. Deviations into other vocal ranges are rather the exception. Some will be happy about this, but I think that a little more variety in this respect would be great for the band. This variety flashes now and then briefly in some songs. What I mean by this, AEPHANEMER show for example in the first single „Panta Rhei“.

Highly melodic, but also wild and impetuous

they swirl around with their music and thus appropriately implement their album title. The melodicism not only arises from the symphonic elements, but mostly from the interplay of the two guitars. Here you are presented with a dexterous art form that must confidently be called highly professional. It is remarkable that Marion, as the singer, also sets the tone on the rhythm guitar. So she has a lot to do. AEPHANEMER show how exceptionally high quality guitar playing works right at the beginning of „Pantha Rhei“, where the nimble leads of Martin Hamiche fly impressively through your ears. Wonderfully done!

What I also like very much about this song is the little vocal surprise of clean vocals. Marion once said in an interview that the clean vocals are a bigger challenge for her. But I think that she does a good job there as well. Such an interspersed sweet part, which flashes very briefly in minute 02:39, is fine and could even have lasted a few moments longer. Also the doubling of Marion’s voice in the chorus comes across really well.

Impressive

is the whole thing in any case and all the songs are all very dynamically implemented.

„Strider“ is one of the songs with many orchestral parts, which gives it a very epic touch. In this song, the synths take over all by themselves in an extended sequence. It sounds nice, but the symphonic samples could sound more organic on the album as a whole. A real orchestra would give the sound even more soul. Maybe this will be an option for AEPHANEMER in the future.

Title track „A Dream Of Wilderness“, where such a sequence was also incorporated. Otherwise, the title track also impresses with a great dynamic with an exciting song structure.

„La Radeau de la Méduse“ also shows the use of other vocals again. In addition, the song has great rhythm changes and moreover, the part with the blastbeat thunderstorm in interaction with the delicate clean voice of Marion is very refreshing. Excellent song!

Let’s move on to the second single „Antigone“, which also offers a brilliant introduction with burning finger leads. Overall, the song offers an excellent demonstration of the fantastic guitar work. There AEPHANEMER have definitely developed very much.

AEPHANEMER celebrate on their album “ A Dream Of Wilderness“ furious Death Metal, which inspires with melodic ferocity. Especially fans who could not do so much with clean vocals, may be pleased. All in all, a remarkable performance that highlights the band’s high quality standards. The new album is the leap to the next level. However, I am sure that AEPHANEMER have by no means exhausted their potential and so AEPHANEMER are guaranteed to climb other levels of musical art.
