EMPYREAL SORROW (Facebook ) sind eine junge Truppe aus München. Mit „PRÆY“ haben sie im November letzten Jahres ihr Debütalbum auf die Welt losgelassen. Und wenn es einen Grund gibt, warum ich jetzt noch ein Review zu einem Album vom letzten Jahr schreibe, dann kann dies nur eines bedeuten: Es ist ein verdammt gutes Album!

Mein lieber Scholli

Man merkt dem Album an, dass die Musiker eine Portion Erfahrung mit sich bringen und viel Talent innehaben. Jedenfalls würde man nicht meinen, dass es sich hier um ein Debütalbum handelt, angesichts der professionellen Darbietung. Songwriting, Produktion und Cover haben das Prädikat hochwertig verdient.

Das Fundament

ist klar im Death-Metal anzusiedeln. Allerdings lassen sich EMPYREAL SORROW ungern in ein enges Korsett zwängen. Sie lieben die Freiheit und toben sich auf dem Death-Metal-Fundament kreativ aus. Man gönnt sich sogar den Luxus zweier Hauptsänger. Da wäre zum einen der dumpfe Growler Martin und der kreischende Screamer Basti, der dem ganzen noch einen Black-Metal-Touch verpasst und gleichzeitig den Bass spielt. Dieses Konzept funktioniert tadellos. Es sorgt für Abwechslung und

Power

bis zum Abwinken. Die instrumentalen Begleiter versorgen die Vocals mit den schärfsten Zutaten: Mächtige Drums inklusive Blastbeats, massives Riffing, melodische Leads, druckvoller Bass. So brennen die Songs förmlich und „Thrown Into Fire“ leitet das Album nach einem Intro dementsprechend passend ein. Der Song wechselt zwischen wuchtigen zermalmenden und treibenden Passagen. EMPYREAL SORROW bieten im Gesamtbild eine gelungene Mixtur von melodischen und brachialen Komponenten.

Ein wenig Irrsinn

gehört beim Metal irgendwo dazu und EMPYREAL SORROW haben eine gute Portion davon. „Source Of (In)humanity“ zeigt von dem Wahnsinn schon ein wenig mehr, wozu auch der speedige Part im Song beiträgt. Es steigert sich noch weiter beim Song „The Error Code“ angelangt, einem meiner persönlichen Highlights auf dem Album. Der Beginn prügelt dem Hörer erbarmungslos den Schmalz aus den Ohren, um plötzlich im Refrain einen Killergroove rauszuhauen, der mit einem hammermäßigen Chorus daherkommt. Mehrstimmige Powershouts laden zum Mitgröhlen ein.

Beim Rausschmeisser „A Night Without Armor“ bekommt der Bass Gelegenheiten in kleinen Soloparts mal dominant seine Muskeln spielen zu lassen, was wunderbar in den Song eingebunden wird. Der Chorgesang im Refrain ist wieder eine Überraschung und kommt mächtig cool rüber.

Fazit

EMPYREAL SORROW setzen mit ihrem Debütalbum „PRÆY“ die Messlatte schon sehr hoch an. Es wird höllisch guter Death-Metal-Stoff geboten, der den Hörer in einen Rauschzustand versetzt. Dabei heben sich EMPYREAL SORROW mit frischen Ideen von der Masse ab. Der Einsatz zweier männlicher Stimmen, die sich vom Stil zwar unterscheiden, aber fantastisch ergänzen, ist etwas individuelles und erzeugt einen hohen Wiedererkennungswert. Die Band lässt erkennen, dass da noch sehr viel mehr Potential unter der Oberfläche brennt. Mögen die Flammen den Weg an die Oberfläche finden und uns mit einem wahren Feuerregen von guten Songs weiter einheizen.

EMPYREAL SORROW (Facebook ) are a young band from Munich in Germany. With „PRÆY“ they released their debut album to the world in November last year. And if there is a reason why I am still writing a review to an album from last year, then this can only mean one thing: It’s a damn good album!

What the hell!

One notices on the album that the musicians bring a good portion of experience with them and they have a lot of talent. In any case, one would not think that this is a debut album, given the highly professional performance. Songwriting, production and cover have earned the predicate of high quality.

The basement

is clearly to be settled in the Death-Metal. However, EMPYREAL SORROW do not like to be forced into a tight corset. They love the freedom and let off steam creatively on the death metal foundation. They even allow themselves the luxury of two main vocalists. On the one hand there is the muffled growler Martin and the screaming screamer Basti, who gives the whole thing a Black-Metal-Touch and also plays the bass. This concept works perfectly. It provides variety and

Power

to the sound. The instrumental companions provide the sound with the sharpest ingredients: mighty drums with blast beats, massive riffing, melodic leads, powerful bass. Thus, the songs literally burn and „Thrown Into Fire“ appropriately introduces the album after an intro. The Song alternates between massive crushing and driving passages. EMPYREAL SORROW offer a successful mixture of melodic and brute components.

A little insanity

belongs to Metal somewhere and EMPYREAL SORROW have a good portion of it. „Source Of (In)humanity“ already shows a little more of the madness, to which also the speedy part in the song contributes. It increases even more with the song „The Error Code“ arrived, one of my personal highlights on the album. The beginning slaps the listener mercilessly stern in the face, to suddenly knock out a killer groove, which comes along with an awesome chorus. Multi-voiced power shouts invite you to sing along.

In the final song „A Night Without Armor“ the bass gets the opportunity to flex its muscles in a dominant way in small solo parts, which is wonderfully integrated into the song. The chorus vocals in the chorus is again a surprise and comes across very cool.

Result

EMPYREAL SORROW set the bar very high with their debut album „PRÆY“. Hellishly good death metal material is offered, which puts the listener in a state of intoxication. At the same time EMPYREAL SORROW stand out from the crowd with fresh ideas. The use of two male voices, which differ in style but complement each other fantastically, is something individual and creates a high recognition value. The band lets you know that there is a lot more potential burning under the surface. May the flames find their way to the surface and continue to heat us up with a rain of fire from good songs.
