Die alte Welt

NEKROMANT (Facebook) kommen aus einer Gegend voller Legenden und alten Sagen. Diese Gegend befindet sich in Schweden. Ihr neues Album „Temple Of Haal“ wurde mit altem reinen Heavy Metal geschmiedet und kann sich trotzdem in unserer modernen Welt behaupten. Euch erwartet ein atmosphärisches geheimnsvolles Werk, welches Euch am 03. Dezember mit dem Zauber der alten Welt begeistern wird. Das Album ist ein Beispiel dafür, wie man als Band neue Wege bestreiten kann ohne seine Wurzeln zu vergessen. Ich durfte Mattias als Sänger und Bassist von NEKROMANT in einem Interview begrüßen. Und er hat einige Antworten parat, die sehr interessant und auch zum Teil überraschend sind. Also los geht’s.

MH: Hallo Mattias! Ich freue mich sehr, dass ich die Gelegenheit habe, Dir einige Fragen zu stellen. Ihr lebt in einer sehr alten Stadt namens Vargön in der Nähe des Vänernsees. Ist das ein Ort mit vielen Mythen und Legenden? Erzähl uns eine der interessantesten Legenden aus der Gegend!

Mattias: Hallo Dirk! Schön, deine Bekanntschaft zu machen. Nicht alle von uns leben noch dort, aber wir sind alle dort geboren. Alle drei von uns in der Band haben eine sehr starke Verbindung zu diesen Orten.

Die Sagen und Legenden drehen sich hauptsächlich um die Zwillingsberge Halleberg und Hunneberg, die sich in unmittelbarer Nähe der Stadt befinden. Die Menschen leben seit langer Zeit auf und unter diesen Bergen, und es ranken sich allerlei Sagen und Legenden um sie.

Eine der bekanntesten Legenden ist die von „Häckle Klint“, einem kleinen Plateau mit Blick auf einen zerklüfteten Berghang. Es war ein Ort, an dem alte Krieger, die nicht die Chance hatten, im Kampf zu sterben, durch einen Sprung über die Kante nach Walhalla gelangen konnten. Das ist doch mal eine heitere Sache!

Das geheimnisvolle Cover

MH: Ich nehme dann mal an, dass auf dem Cover einer der gerade erwähnten Berge abgebildet sind. Was hat es mit der runenartigen Struktur auf sich, die sich auf dem Berg erhebt?

Mattias: Der Hunneberg gilt als der „Elch-Berg“, deshalb ist das Bauwerk ein stilisiertes Elchgeweih.

Inspiration vor der Haustür

MH: Wann habt ihr das letzte Mal einen Ausflug zu einem der Berge gemacht? Gibt es einen besonderen Ort, an dem Ihr gerne seid?

Mattias: Nun, zwei von uns wohnen an den Hängen. Ich wohne unter dem Hunneberg und Adam wohnt auf dem Halleberg, wir müssen also nicht unbedingt einen Ausflug machen. Es gibt hier wirklich unglaubliche Orte, kilometerlange Aussichten, feuchte Höhlen und tiefe Wälder. Es ist wirklich einfach, hier Inspiration zu finden.

Wir beten keine Bäume an

MH: Seid ihr sehr traditionelle Menschen? Nenne mir eine schwedische Tradition, die Euch besonders am Herzen liegt!

Mattias: Nun, ich denke, wir sind genauso traditionell wie jeder andere in der modernen westlichen Welt. Entgegen der landläufigen Meinung leben nicht alle Schweden in Hütten und beten Bäume an.

Die traditionelle schwedische Griesgrämigkeit diktiert uns, dass wir uns auf die Last des modernen Lebens konzentrieren, anstatt auf die absolut schöne Natur, die uns umgibt, was eigentlich ein großartiger Inspirationspunkt für das Schreiben von Songs ist!
Die gute alte schwedische Tradition, sich bis zum Umfallen zu betrinken, machen wir allerdings regelmäßig mit.

Das Paranormale

MH: Euer Bandname NEKROMANT bezieht sich auf eine Person, die den Geist der Toten beschwört. Glaubt ihr an solche Dinge?

Mattias: Ich bin wohl so etwas wie ein Agnostiker*, was dieses Thema angeht. Unser Name und unsere Texte passen zu keinem Glaubenssystem, aber ich beschäftige mich gerne mit diesen Themen in meinem Kopf.

(*Agnostiker vertreten die Ansicht, dass übernatürliche Phänomene oder Gottheiten existieren können, auch wenn sie rational nicht erklärbar sind. Kurz gesagt: Alles ist möglich, auch wenn der Beweis fehlt.)

Konventionelle Religion und Arroganz

MH: Gibt es unerklärliche Dinge oder Phänomene, die über den normalen Alltagshorizont der Menschen hinausgehen?

Mattias: Nun, da bin ich mir sicher! Aber es liegt in der Natur der Sache, dass die Dinge unerklärlich sind. Sie sind eben unerklärlich! Ich halte es für sehr arrogant, wenn Menschen behaupten, sie wüssten mehr über diese Dinge als alle anderen, was wahrscheinlich der Grund dafür ist, dass ich seit langem gegen konventionelle Religionen bin. Wir sind Bakterien, die in einem winzigen Stückchen Luft leben, das einen riesigen Planeten umgibt, der in einem Ozean aus Nichts schwebt, und wir behaupten, etwas über den Sinn dieses Lebens zu wissen? Ich bitte Dich.

MH: Ist so etwas unrealistischer als der Glaube an einen Gott?

Mattias: Ich glaube nicht, dass „realistisch“ ein sehr nützliches Wort ist, wenn es um Glauben oder Religion geht. Die Menschen werden an das glauben, was sie nachts besser schlafen lässt, und vielleicht ist das auch besser so.

MH Mit welchem verstorbenen Menschen aus der Zeitgeschichte würden Sie noch einmal sprechen wollen?

Mattias: Ich würde Jack Churchill gerne auf ein Bier einladen. Er war ein britischer Offizier, der im Zweiten Weltkrieg diente und ein Breitschwert und einen Dudelsack trug. Ich habe das Gefühl, er könnte die eine oder andere gute Geschichte erzählen.

Immer diese Bandnamen…

MH: NEKROMANT ist ein sehr dunkler Begriff. Als ich ihn zum ersten Mal hörte, habe ich eigentlich viel dunklere und extremere Musik erwartet. Aber Euer Sound ist gar nicht so dunkel. Ihr huldigt eher dem traditionellen Heavy Metal und wandelt auch auf düsteren Pfaden.
Warum habt ihr Euch damals für diesen Bandnamen entschieden?

Mattias: Ja, ich würde sagen, dass wir Heavy Metal mit einer dunkleren Seite spielen.
Eigentlich mussten wir unseren Namen in NEKROMANT ändern, weil wir damals SERPENT hießen. Es gab zu viele Bands, die so hießen. Deswegen haben wir uns für NEKROMANT entschieden, der ein wenig einzigartiger war.
Ich wusste, dass ich einen Namen auf Schwedisch wollte, der aber auch auf Englisch leicht auszusprechen war. Unter dem Namen SERPENT hieß unser erstes Album „Nekromant“: Das war es also! Eine Band muss einen Namen haben!

Musik und Inhalt müssen passen

MH: Eure letzten Alben waren ein bisschen schneller und hatten mehr Rock’n Roll-Stil. Nimm zum Beispiel den Titelsong „Snakes & Liars“ vom letzten Album, der ein echter knackiger Rock’n Roller ist.

Auf dem neuen Album ist es der Song „The Woods“, der konsequent zügiger nach vorne geht. Ansonsten ist das Tempo eher gemäßigt und insgesamt ist die Stimmung etwas düsterer. Aber es vermittelt eine ganz eigene Atmosphäre. Es gibt viele schöne Hooks und Harmonien, die ein episches Gefühl erzeugen. Für mich hat es sogar manchmal einen hypnotisch beschwörenden Charakter.
Wie seht ihr das?

Mattias: Gute Frage. Ich denke, Du hast absolut Recht. Wir verändern uns mit jeder Platte ein bisschen, das gehört zum Prozess, der natürlich und nicht sehr überlegt ist. Wir sind in der glücklichen Lage, dass wir musikalisch eine große Bandbreite an Dingen machen können, was ein echter Segen ist. Die Grundlagen sind immer dieselben, aber der Geschmack ändert sich mit der Zeit ein wenig.

Ich glaube, das hat etwas mit dem textlichen Inhalt zu tun, denn es ist ziemlich schwer, einen Song über die große Schlange aus der nordischen Mythologie in einen Drei-Minuten-Popsong zu verwandeln. Diesmal war es sinnvoller, längere und verworrenere Stücke mit viel Atmosphäre zu machen. Wer weiß, vielleicht wird das nächste Album mit Drei-Minuten-Krachern gefüllt sein!

Mehr ist mehr

MH: Auf jeden Fall ist die Produktion kraftvoller und massiver geworden.
Würdest du sagen, dass der Sound moderner geworden ist?

Mattias: Das ist es auf jeden Fall! Ich bin sehr zufrieden damit. Ja, wir wollten weg von der Falle, zu retro zu sein. Also ist moderner definitiv fair. Das ist ein Schritt, den ich nicht bereue. „Mehr ist mehr“, wie ‚Yngwie’* sagt.

Der Schlüsselsong

MH: Welches ist der Schlüsselsong auf eurem Album, der für euch die Tür zur Welt von „Temple Of Haal“ geöffnet hat? Oder anders gefragt: Mit welchem Song hat das Album begonnen?

Mattias: „Häckle Klint“! Das war das erste Stück, das ich für das Album geschrieben habe und das den Ton angab. Starke Melodien, ein paar Verschiebungen und eine Menge Eintauchen. Das Album wurde quasi in 2 Teilen geschrieben, 4 der Songs sind etwa 3 Jahre alt. Ich überlasse es euch, herauszufinden, welche das sind!

Einfach ein gutes Album machen

MH: Die Songs einer Band sind in der Regel ein Spiegelbild einer Situation oder eines Gefühls, in dem man sich als Songwriter befindet. Unter welchen Bedingungen oder mit welchen Gefühlen wurden die Songs von „Temple Of Haal“ geschrieben?

Mattias: Es begann wie immer! Wir wollten das beste Album machen, das wir können. Allerdings hatte ich beschlossen, diesmal Texte über Dinge zu schreiben, die mich begeistern statt mich zu ärgern. Dies hat das Ergebnis des Albums beeinflusst. Meine Interpretation der lokalen Folklore ist etwas, das mich reizt, und es war sehr einfach, sie in ein Heavy-Metal-Setting zu setzen. Ich bin jedoch nicht daran interessiert, in den Texten irgendwelche Geschichten zu erzählen, ich möchte lediglich ein Gefühl vermitteln. Jeder Song hat seine eigene Stimmung und ich versuche, diese mit den Texten zu unterstreichen.

Ich will keine Botschaften vermitteln

Wollt Ihr den Fans mit dem Album irgendwas vermitteln? Ist das Album ein Ausdruck der aktuellen dunklen Zeiten, in denen wir leben?

Mattias: Ich bin mir nicht sicher, auf welche „dunklen Zeiten“ Du dich beziehst. Mir kommt es so vor, als wäre es noch nie so einfach gewesen, ein Mensch zu sein, und trotzdem ist niemand glücklich. Sicher, wir hatten eine Pandemie, aber das ist historisch nichts Neues. Ich frage mich, wie die westliche Welt aussehen wird, wenn wir uns echten Widrigkeiten stellen müssen.
Auf jeden Fall steht das Album einfach für ein gutes Album und nichts anderes! Ich hasse Allegorien und unerwünschte Konnotationen! Ich versuche nicht, irgendeine Art von Botschaft zu vermitteln!

Neues Jahr, neues Glück?

MH: Das Album wird am 03.12.2021 veröffentlicht. Wie sehen die Konzertpläne für das kommende Jahr aus?

Mattias: Wir haben für November 2022 eine Tournee geplant, mit Terminen in Deutschland und Dänemark. Bitte verfolgt unsere Facebook-Seite für weitere Details, wenn wir näher kommen!

MH: Welches war das letzte Konzert, das du als Fan erlebt hast?

Mattias: Da fällt mir spontan IRON MAIDEN in Kopenhagen vor ein paar Jahren ein. Es erstaunt mich, wie großartig sie live immer noch sind.

MH: Glaubst du, dass wir trotz Covid 19 nächstes Jahr endlich wieder ein Stück Normalität und Lebensqualität zurückbekommen werden?

Mattias: Ich hoffe es. Wir haben gerade unsere ersten Gigs seit über 2 Jahren gespielt, und ich kann euch gar nicht sagen, wie toll es sich angefühlt hat, wieder auf der Bühne zu stehen. Hoffentlich können wir diese beschissene Pandemie dann ganz vergessen.

MH: Die letzten Worte gehören euch! Sagt uns, was immer ihr wollt!

The old world

NEKROMANT (Facebook) come from a region full of legends and old sagas. This region is located in Sweden. Their new album „Temple Of Haal“ was forged with old pure Heavy Metal and can still hold its own in our modern world. You can expect an atmospheric mysterious work, which will delight you with the magic of the ancient world on 2021-12-03-. The album is an example of how a band can break new ground without forgetting its roots. I had the pleasure of interviewing Mattias, the band’s singer and bassist. And he has some answers ready, which are very interesting and also partly surprising. So here we go.

MH: Hello Mattias! I´m very happy to have the chance asking you some questions. You live in a very old town called Vargön near Lake Vänern. Is it a place with many myths and legends? Tell us one of the most interesting legends from the area!

Mattias: Hi, nice to make your acquaintance. Not all of us live there still, but we are all born there. The myths and legends are mainly focused on the twin mountains, Halleberg and Hunneberg, that are in close vicinity to the town. People have been living on and under these mountains for a very long time and there are all kinds of folklore attached to them. All three of us in the band have very strong ties to these places.

One of the more famous legends is that of Häckle Klint, a small plateau looking over a jagged mountainside. This was a place where old warriors, who did not have the chance to die in battle, could go to Valhalla by jumping over the edge. Cheerful stuff like that!

The mysterious cover

MH: I’ll assume then that the cover features one of the mountains just mentioned. What’s up with the rune-like structure that rises on the mountain?

Mattias: Hunneberg is considered the “moose-mountain”, so the structure is a stylized pair of moose antlers.

Inspiration in the neighborhood

MH: When was the last time you took a trip to one of the mountains? Is there a special place you like to go there?

Mattias: Well, two of us live on the slopes. I live under Hunneberg and Adam lives on Halleberg, so we don’t really have to take a trip to visit. There are really incredible places here, views for miles, dank caves, and deep forests. Its really easy to find inspiration here.

We don’t worship trees

MH: Are you very traditional people? Tell me one Swedish tradition that is especially close to your heart!

Mattias: Well, I suppose we are as traditional as everyone else in the modern Western world. Contrary to popular belief, all swedes do not live in huts and worship trees. The traditional Swedish grumpiness dictates that we focus on the drone on modern life instead of the absolutely beautiful nature surrounding us, which actually is a great point of inspiration for writing songs!

However, the fine old Swedish tradition of getting black out drunk is something that we partake in on a regular basis.

Paranormal worlds

MH: Your band name NEKROMANT refers to a person who summons the spirit of the dead.Do you believe in things like that?

Mattias: I suppose I am somewhat of an agnostic on the subject. Our name and our lyrics do not conform to any belief system, but I do like to dabble around with those subjects in my mind.

Religion and arrogance

MH: Are there inexplicable things or phenomena that go beyond the normal everyday horizon of people?

Mattias: Well, I’m sure there is! But the very nature of things being inexplicable dictates that they are just that, unexplainable. I think that it’s very arrogant when people claim that they know more about these things than anyone else, which is probably why I have been anti conventional religion of a long time. We are bacteria living in a tiny slice of air surrounding a huge planet that is suspended in an ocean of nothing, and we claim to know something about the purpose of this? Please.

MH: Is something like this more unrealistic than believing in one God?

Mattias: I don’t think that “realistic” is a very useful word when talking about beliefs or religion. People will believe whatever makes them sleep better at night, and maybe that’s for the best.

Someone from the past

MH: With which deceased person from the contemporary history would you want to talk? What would you ask him?

Mattias: I would like to have Jack Churchill over for a beer. He was a British officer who served in the second world war, sporting a broadsword and some bagpipes. I have a feeling he could tell a good story or two.

The story of the bandname

MH: NEKROMANT is a very dark term. When I heard it for the first time, I actually expected much darker and more extreme music. But your sound is not that dark at all. You generally pay homage to traditional Heavy Metal and also walk on doomy paths.  Why did you decide on this band name back then?

Mattias: Yeah, I would say that we play heavy metal with a darker side. We actually had to change our name to Nekromant, we were called Serpent back in the day. There were a lot of bands called Serpent, Nekromant is a little bit more unique.

I knew that I wanted a name in Swedish but one that could easily be pronounced in English. As SERPENT, our first album was called „Nekromant“. So there it is! A band gotta have a name!

The darker way

MH: Your last albums were a bit faster and have more Rock’n Roll style. Take for example the title track „Snakes & Liars“ from the last album, which was a real Rock’n Roller. Short & crispy!

On the new album it is only the song „The Woods“, which drives consistently more briskly forward. Otherwise, the tempo is rather moderate and overall the mood is a little more somber. But it conveys a special atmosphere of its own. There are many beautiful hooks and harmonies that generate an epic feeling.  For me, it even has sometimes a hypnotically evocative character.

How do you guys see it?

Mattias: Good question. I think you are absolutely right. We shift and turn a little bit with every record, that’s all part of the process being natural and not very contemplated. We are in the fortunate position of being able to do a wide variety of things musically, which is a real blessing. The foundations are always the same, but the flavor changes a bit over time. I think that is has something to do with the lyrical content, its kind of hard to make a song about the great serpent from Norse mythology into a 3-minute pop song. This time, it felt meaningful to do longer and more convoluted tracks with a lot of atmosphere. Who knows, the next album might be filled with 3-minute bangers!

„More is more!“

MH: Anyway, the production has turned out more powerful and massive.

Would you say that the sound has become more modern?

Mattias: It sure did! I am very happy with it. Yeah, we wanted to move away from the trap of being too retro. So more modern is definitely fair. That is a step I do not regret. „More is more!“, as Yngwie* says.

Keysong

MH: What is the key song on your album that opened the door to the world of „Temple Of Haal“ for you? Or asked differently: With which song did the album start?

Mattias: „Häckle Klint!“ That was the first track I wrote for the album and that set the tone. Strong melodies, a few shifts, and a lot of immersion. The album was kind of written in 2 pieces, 4 of the songs are about 3 years old. I’ll let you figure out which ones!

Only making a good album

MH: The songs of a band are usually a reflection of a situation or feelings in which you find yourself as a songwriter. Under which conditions or with which feelings were the songs of „Temple Of Haal“ written?

Mattias: It started out as it always does, us wanting to make the best album we can. However, I had decided to write lyrics about things that excite me rather than anger me this time, so that influenced how the album came out. My interpretation of the local folklore is something that tickles my fancy and was very easy to set into a heavy metal setting. However, I am not interested in telling any stories in the lyrics, I merely want to convey a feeling. Each song has its own vibe and I try to accentuate that with the lyrics.

I don’t convey messages

MH: Is the album an expression of the current dark times we live in? Do you want to convey something to the fans with the album?

Mattias: I’m not sure what “dark times” you are referring to. To me, it seems like it’s never been easier being a person, and yet, no one is happy. Sure, we had a pandemic, but that’s nothing new historically. I wonder what the Western world will look like when we have to face some real adversity. In any case, the album is not representative of anything else than a good album. I hate allegories and unwanted connotations; I am not trying to convey any kind of message.

New year, new luck?

MH: „Temple Of Haal“ will be released on 03.12.2021. What are the concert plans for the coming year?

Mattias: We have a tour planned for November 2022, with dates in Germany and Denmark. Please follow our Facebook page for more details as we get closer!

MH: What was the last concert you enjoyed as a fan?

Mattias: What pops to mind is IRON MAIDEN in Copenhagen a few years back. It amazes me how great they still are live.

MH: Do you think that despite Covid 19 we can finally get back some normality and quality of life next year?

Mattias: I hope so. We just played our first gigs in over 2 years, and I can’t tell you how great it felt to be back on stage. Hopefully, we can forget all about this bullshit pandemic.

MH: The last words belong to you! Tell us whatever you want!
