BRAINSTORM sind in Deutschland eine feste Größe im Bereich Power Metal und können sich auch international gut behaupten. Mit dem neuen Album „Plague Of Rats“ werden sie ihre Stellung sicherlich verteidigen und ich würde sogar sagen, dass sie neue Gebiete erobern werden.

Denn BRAINSTORM vollführen auf ihrem Album eine Reihe musikalischer Attacken, die schlichtweg stark nach vorne gehen und dabei schön durchdacht ausgeführt werden. Nach dem kleinen Intro zeigt der erste Song „Beyond Enemy Lines“, aus welchem Holz BRAINSTORM geschnitzt sind. Eine aggressive Ader mit einem hervorragenden Gefühl für epische Melodien und famosen Gesangslinien. Metalherz, was willst du mehr?

Sogar exotische Klänge des Orients sind zu vernehmen, wenn man sich den Song „Garuda“ anhört. So etwas sorgt immer für eine zusätzliche atmosphärische Komponente und bringt Abwechslung ins Geschehen. Im Mittelteil des Albums lässt die Power mit „The Shepherd Girl“ und „Your Soul That Lingers In Me“ etwas nach und man geht die Geschichte gelassener an.

Doch mit dem siebten Song „Masquerade Cinspiracy“ kommt wieder Dampf auf den Kessel. Alex Krull (Atrocity) impft „From Hell“ mit ein paar dezenter dunkleren Vocal-Vibes, was mir ganz gut gefällt. Ansonsten gibt man sich bis zum Ende keine Blöße, so dass „Plague Of Rats“ ein bärenstarkes Album geworden ist. (9 von 10 Punkten)

ARION „The Light That Burns The Sky“

Die finnische Band ARION gibt sich voll und ganz dem Power Metal hin und werden euch mit 11 Songs auf ihrem neuen Album „The Light That Burns The Sky“ begegnen. Das opulente Intro sorgt für die nötige Einstimmung, bevor es dann richtig losgeht. Der Titelsong steht direkt am Anfang und galoppiert in einem flotten Tempo voran. Mit viel orchestralem Beiwerk erhält der Sound seinen epischen Einschlag. Und die Melodien schmeicheln sich ganz unkompliziert ins Ohr.

Ein Besonderheitsfaktor ergibt mit Keyborder Arttu Vauhkonen, der hier mit seinen Darbietungen für Aufsehen sorgt, wenn er über die Tasten fliegt und damit einen extravaganten Flair erzeugt. Gerade zusammen mit den schönen ansprechenden Gitarrensolos ergeben sich bestechende Momente. Die Band zeigt aber in allen Bereichen, dass sie ihr Handwerk sehr gut verstehen.

ARION lassen immer wieder eine knackige Härte durchscheinen, bewegen sich aber sonst vorrangig in der leichteren melodischen Schiene. Ausgerechnet der finale Track „Into The Hands Of Fate“ präsentiert sehr eindrucksvoll und mit am besten, was im Sound von ARION für Potential steckt. Hier gefällt mir die ganze Ausstrahlung des Songs mit seiner düsteren Epik. Sänger klingt hier schön rauh und kräftig. Der tragende himmlische Refrain stellt eine schöne kontrastierende Ergänzung dar.

„The Light That Burns The Sky“ ist ein super produziertes Album. Der Sound kommt gewaltig gut rüber und so werden die qualitativ hochwertigen Songs sehr ansprechend inszeniert. ARION spielen auf jeden Fall in der Power-Metal-Oberliga mit. (8 von 10 Punkten)

THE DEFECT „Death X Destiny“

THE DEFECT (Facebook) bieten einen sehr modernen Metal, der dunklen Synthiepop mit hartem Metal vermischt und darüber hinaus mit einem Industrial Touch daherkommt. Entfernt fühlte ich mich beim ersten Kontakt an die Band ‚The Browning‘ erinnert. Im Nachhinein, als ich mich näher über die Band informierte, war mir der Grund dafür auch klar. Denn Frontmann Jonny McBee von ‚The Browning‘ zeichnet sich auch für dieses Projekt verantwortlich.  Mir gefällt dieser doch ziemlich extravagante Metalmix.

Das Album startet zurückhaltend, auch wenn kurz nach dem Start schon die ersten fetten Riffs durch die Boxen knallen. Doch man sollte sich nicht täuschen. Denn man ist versucht, sich von hypnotischen weiblichen Gesang ins Land der Träume führen zu lassen, doch wird man plötzlich brutal aus der Harmonie gerissen, wenn THE DEFECT das aggressive Raubtier aus dem Käfig lassen. Da werden die Krallen ausgefahren und der Sound wird recht bissig. Dies ausgeklügelte Mischung hat wirklich seinen Reiz. Als Highlight sei hier der Song „Into The Void“ genannt, der ein absoluter Burner ist.

Insgesamt zeigen die Songs eine angenehme Varianz, die mit ansprechenden atmosphärischen Elementen und technischen Spielereien ausgestattet sind, aber gleichzeitig mit verschiedenen harten Metal-Attacken und sogar rockigen Einflüssen für den nötigen Punch sorgen. Es ist schon ein gut durchdachtes Konzept, was hier zu Grunde liegt. Ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass dieser Sound sehr gut bei den Fans ankommen wird. Ist halt mal was anderes! (8,5 von 10 Punkten)

ENEMY INSIDE „What We Used To Be“

ENEMY INSIDE stammen aus Aschaffenburg. Sie spielen modernen Metal, der mit Elementen des Metalcore, aber auch mit einigen anderen Zutaten wie Alternative Rock, Industrial usw. geschmackvoll angerichtet wird. Herausgekommen ist ein frischer dynamischer Sound, der sehr facettenreich rüberkommt und daher wirklich schlecht in eine Kategorie gepackt werden kann.

Grundsätzlich geht es hart zur Sache, aber es kommen durchaus eingängige Passagen vor, die schon eine poppige Eingängigkeit aufweisen. Da fällt mir spontan der Song „Shoud Have Known Better“ ein, der entspannt und locker auftritt, aber dann doch ab der zweiten Minute den Hammer rausholt. Ja, man weiß nie so genau, was bei ENEMY INSIDE als nächstes so passiert. „Sayonara“ dagegen serviert geile Rap-Einlagen, die super präsentiert werden. „Sayonara“ dagegen ist ein Spagat zwischen dunklem Industrial Metal und geilen spritzigen Rap-Einlagen. Ein verrückter, aber genial umgesezter Song.

„What We Used To Be“ als Powerballade klingt im Vergleich ein wenig langweilig. Dafür knallen dann wieder so Songs wie „Fuck That Party“ volle Kanne rein. Das sind die großen Momente von ENEMY INSIDE. Eine hohes Maß an Energie mit einem unvorhersehbaren Songverlauf, der einen Hang zur Verrücktheit ausstrahlt Bei dem Song darf auch Zak Tell ‚Clawfinger‘ mitmachen, was noch einmal für zusätzliche starke Momente sorgt. Da werden wieder Erinnerung an meine Jugend wach. Und für die letzte Minute in dem Song solltet ihr euch anschnallen, denn da geht es noch richtig ab.

So bietet das Album „What We Used To Be“ eine schmackhafte Wundertüte, die mit allerlei Köstlichkeiten daherkommt. Neben süßen zarten Verführungen gibt es auch saure scharfe Knallbonbons. Eine schöne bunte und auch verrückte Mischung, die sehr gut zu gefallen weiß. Das Album macht Spaß. (8,5 von 10 Punkten)

BRAINSTORM „Plague Of Rats“

BRAINSTORM are a force in the German power metal scene and also have success internationally. With the new album „Plague Of Rats“ they will certainly defend their position and I would even say that they will conquer new territories.

Because BRAINSTORM perform a series of musical attacks on their album that simply push forward and are executed in a well thought-out manner. After the short intro, the first song „Beyond Enemy Lines“ shows what BRAINSTORM are made of. An aggressive streak with an excellent feeling for epic melodies and fantastic vocal lines. Metal heart, what more could you want?

You can even hear exotic sounds of the Orient when you listen to the song „Garuda“. Something like this always provides an additional atmospheric component and brings variety to the experience. In the middle section of the album, the power subsides somewhat with „The Shepherd Girl“ and „Your Soul That Lingers In Me“ and the story is approached more calmly.

But the seventh song, „Masquerade Cinspiracy“, gets on the more hard powerful path again. Alex Krull (Atrocity) injects „From Hell“ with a few subtly darker vocal vibes, which I quite like. Apart from that, they don’t show any weakness until the end, so that „Plague Of Rats“ has become a very strong album. (9 out of 10 points)

ARION „The Light That Burns The Sky“

The Finnish band ARION is fully dedicated to power metal and you will get 11 songs on their new album „The Light That Burns The Sky“. The opulent intro sets the mood before things really get going. The title track is right at the beginning and gallops along at a brisk pace. The sound is given an epic feel with lots of orchestral accompaniment. And the melodies flying easy into your ears.

Keyboardist Arttu Vauhkonen is a special factor, who causes a sensation with his performances when he flies over the keys, creating an extravagant flair. Together with the beautifully appealing guitar solos, this results in captivating moments. The band shows in all areas that they understand their craft very well.

ARION let a crisp heaviness shine through again and again, but otherwise move primarily in the lighter melodic track. The final track „Into The Hands Of Fate“ is one of the best and most impressive examples of ARION’s sound potential. I like the whole aura of the song with its dark epicness. The singer sounds rough and powerful here. The heavenly chorus is a nice contrasting addition.

„The Light That Burns The Sky“ is a superbly produced album. The sound comes across really well and the high-quality songs are presented in a very appealing way. ARION definitely play in the top league of power metal. (8 out of 10 points)

THE DEFECT „Death X Destiny“

THE DEFECT (Facebook) offer very modern metal that mixes dark synth pop with hard metal and also comes with an industrial touch. At first contact, I felt remotely reminded of the band ‚The Browning‘. In retrospect, when I found out more about the band, the reason for this was clear to me. Because frontman Jonny McBee from ‚The Browning‘ is also responsible for this project.  I like this rather extravagant metal mix.

The album gets off to a restrained start, even though the first fat riffs are already banging through the speakers shortly after the start. But don’t be fooled. You are tempted to let yourself be led into the land of dreams by the hypnotic female vocals, but you are suddenly brutally torn from the harmony when THE DEFECT let the aggressive predator out of its cage. The claws are extended and the sound becomes quite biting. This ingenious mixture really has its appeal. The highlight here is the song „Into The Void“, which is an absolute burner.

Overall, the songs show a pleasant variance, which are equipped with appealing atmospheric elements and technical gimmicks, but at the same time provide the necessary punch with various hard metal attacks and even rock influences. It’s a well thought-out concept. I can imagine that this sound will go down well with many fans. It’s just something different! (8.5 out of 10 points)

ENEMY INSIDE „What We Used To Be“

ENEMY INSIDE hail from Aschaffenburg. They play modern metal with elements of metalcore, but also with some other ingredients such as alternative rock, industrial etc.. The result is a fresh, dynamic sound that comes across as very multi-faceted and is therefore difficult to categorize.

Basically, it’s hard-hitting, but there are also passages that have a pop-like catchiness. The song „Shoud Have Known Better“ comes to mind spontaneously, which is relaxed and easy-going, but then really kicks into gear from the second minute onwards. Yes, you never really know what’s going to happen next with ENEMY INSIDE. „Sayonara“, on the other hand, serves up great rap interludes. „Sayonara“, on the other hand, is a balancing act between dark industrial metal and cool, lively rap interludes. A crazy, but brilliantly realized song.

„What We Used To Be“ as a power ballad sounds a little boring in comparison to the firecracker on this album. On the other hand, songs like „Fuck That Party“ bang away again. These are the great moments of ENEMY INSIDE. A high level of energy with an unpredictable song progression that radiates a tendency towards craziness. Zak Tell ‚Clawfinger‘ join in on this song, which provides additional strong moments. It brings back memories of my youth. And you should buckle up for the last minute of the song, because it really ignites a firestorm.

The album „What We Used To Be“ is a tasty grab bag that comes with all kinds of delicacies. In addition to sweet, delicate temptations, there are also sour, spicy pops. A nice, colorful and crazy mixture that is very appealing. The album is fun. (8.5 out of 10 points)

LÖANSHARK „No Sins To Confess“

LÖANSHARK haben sich 2017 in Barcelona gegründet und sie zocken puren Heavy Metal. Und wer sich das sexy verruchte Cover-Artwork anschaut, der wird sofort feststellen, dass es sich optisch ganz und gar an den 80’er Jahren orientiert. Und das gleiche gilt für die Musik! LÖANSHARK rocken ihre Mucke ganz old school. Ich finde das äußerst sympathisch und kann dem Sound auch heute noch viel abgewinnen, denn mit dem aktuellen technischen Standard bekommt der old school Sound noch mal eine ganz andere Power.

LÖANSHARK fegen mit 10 Songs durch eure Ohren und der Opener „Electric Shockin Waves“ nimmt seinen Titel wörtlich. Ein blitzschneller Song, der keine Gefangenen macht. Man ist sofort wach und alarmiert! „Another Man In The Trunk“ ist ebenfalls ne Speedrakete mit hoher Durchschlagskraft. Die Band gönnt sich jedenfalls keine Verschnaufpause, steht ständig unter Strom und ist auf dem ganzen Album flott und fetzig unterwegs. Auch wenn dabei irgendwann ein kleiner Gewöhnungseffekt eintritt, so ist „No Sins To Confess“ ein tolles Album, was euch mitreißen wird. (8 von 10 Punkten)

SHADOW OF THE TALISMAN „As above, so below“

SHADOW OF THE TALISMAN haben sich 2022 zusammengefunden. Aber man sollte nicht meinen , dass sie noch grün hinter den Ohren werden. Denn was sie auf ihrem Debüt „As above, so below“ abliefern, ist aller Ehren wert. Im Gesamtbild fällt auf, dass die Spielzeiten der Songs oft überdurchschnittlich lang sind. Der letzte Song „So Below“ bringt es sogar auf eine Zeit 09:29 Minuten. Aber es gibt auch kurze stringente Songs wie „Fiery Descent„, die nur knapp über drei Minuten laufen.

SHADOW OF THE TALISMAN sind also offen für verschiedene Ansätze, so lange es ordentlich knallt. Grundsätzlich fährt die Band also auf harten Wegen. Das schüttelt und rüttelt den Hörer gut durch. In den Songs steckt ne Menge cooles Zeug drin. Mit dem Opener „Arise“ schwingt ohne Vorwarnung eine zerstörerische Abrissbirne auf euch zu.

Der zweite Song „What Is Real“ hat dann einen anderen musikalischen Ansatz und geht dann mehr in die rockige Richtung, wobei man mit den Vocals gerne experimentiert. Cleane Vocals und fiese harte Vocals sind ein Merkmal von SHADOW OF THE TALISMAN. Das bereits erwähnte „Fiery Descent“ gibt wieder Vollgas und ist kurz und knackig. Es ist eine dreckig schmutzige Prügelorgie mit einer fetten Ladung Thrash. Den krassen Kontrast bekommt man dann mit der ansprechenden Power-Ballade „Cursed“, die zum Ende hin noch stark aufdreht.

SHADOW OF THE TALISMAN decken in ihren Songs tatsächlich eine große Bandbreite der Metalwelt ab. Sie sind sehr gut in dem, was sie tun. Ihre Mission geht bereits auf ihrem Debüt vollends auf, indem sie sowohl mit kurzen stringenten Angriffen erfolgreich einschlagen, als auch mit komplexen aufregenden Songs für astreine Unterhaltung sorgen. (8,5 von 10 Punkten)

THE ODDEVEN „Outer Space Outtakes“

Genre: Alternative Metal/Post-Grunge

Einleitend möchte ich kurz ein Zitat aus dem Pressetext bringen, der den Sound von THE ODDEVEN folgendermaßen beschreibt:

The OddEven sind eine Alternative-Metal-Post-Grunge-Band, die für rifforientierten Hardrock mit einem mit massivem Groove und hypnotischem Kick, der dich auf deinem Barhocker herumwirbelt.

Meine Güte… Da steckt ne Menge drin in diesem Satz, aber ich musste nach dem ersten Hören des Albums zugeben, dass diese Beschreibung eigentlich ganz gut zutrifft. Die Männer gehen die Sache jedenfalls auch mit einer guten Portion Humor an, was man zum einen schon anhand des Cover-Artworks erkennen und zum anderen auch direkt aus dem ersten Song „First Encounter“ ableiten kann.

Im Opener besingt die Band den Besuch von Außerirdischen, die mit importierten Pilzen von ihrem Heimatplaneten für eine unvergessliche Party sorgen. Massive Riffs und wuchtige Drums bringen einen starken Groove. Auch fällt hier die markante Röhre von Sänger Grant Walker auf, die es in sich hat. Da steckt richtig Power drin. Und das Gitarrensolo verschärft den Trip auf irre Art und Weise.

Die Songs grooven schön schwer und dröhnen mächtig fett aus den Boxen. THE ODDEVEN kommen bei ihrer Show zudem ziemlich lässig rüber, was insgesamt für ’nen gehörigen Coolnessfaktor sorgt. Dafür ist auch der gewisse Grunge-Faktor mitverantwortlich, der häufig zu spüren ist. Der Song „Soul“ beispielsweise beginnt ziemlich entspannt, mutiert dann aber zwischendurch zu einem tonnenschweren Monster, das alles plattwalzt.

Ein Wehrmutstropfen ist allerdings die sehr kurze Spielzeit von 30 Minuten. Zum Glück gibt es keine Durchhänger, so dass es zumindest hervorragende 30 Minuten sind, die einem hier geschenkt werden. Denn die Songs machen wirklich verdammt viel Spaß! (8 von 10 Punkten)

TO OBEY A TYRANT „Frigore Inferni“ EP

Genre: Deathcore

Jetzt geht es mal ans Eingemachte, denn TO OBEY A TYRANT laden zu einer verstörenden dunklen Messe ein. Das Synonym ‚Extreme Metal‘ ist für solche Bands geschaffen worden. Extremer kann man einen Sound kaum generieren. Die Band maltretiert den Hörer nach allen Regeln der erbarmungslosen Kunst.

Die Vocals werden euch in all ihren schauderhaftesten Erscheinungsformen heimsuchen, während euch instrumental so was von der Arsch versohlt wird. TO OBEY A TYRANT sind ein Albtraum, der euch nicht wieder loslassen wird. Ihr werdet schweißgebadet aufwachen, doch die Dämonen werden euch weiter verfolgen. Die Songs sind vollgepackt mit Wendungen, die überraschen und faszinieren. Wenn man kurz davor ist im höllischen Inferno den Verstand zu verlieren, gelingt es der Band immer wieder sich ein wenig zurückzunehmen und Ordnung ins Chaos zu bringen. Diese kleinen „Verschnaufpausen“ wirken nicht minder gewaltig und bieten epische Ausflüge.

Ohne Frage sind TO OBEY A TYRANT eine intensive Erfahrung. Lasst die Dämonen in euch fahren und ihr werdet eine unvergessliche Reise in die Dunkelheit machen. Ein wahnsinniges Album im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes! Trotz des schier überwältigenden Infernos schaffen sie mit einer akzentuierten melodischen Prägung besondere Momente in der Welt der Zerstörung. (9,5 von 10 Punkten)

LÖANSHARK „No Sins To Confess“

LÖANSHARK were founded in Barcelona in 2017 and play pure heavy metal. And if you take a look at the sexy, wicked cover artwork, you’ll immediately notice that it’s completely inspired by the 80s. And the same goes for the music! LÖANSHARK rock their music old school. I find this extremely likeable and can still get a lot out of the sound today, because the current technical standard gives the old school sound a completely different power.

LÖANSHARK sweep through your ears with 10 songs and the opener „Electric Shockin Waves“ takes its title literally. A lightning-fast song that takes no prisoners. You are immediately awake and alert! „Another Man In The Trunk“ is also a speed rocket with high penetrating power. The band certainly don’t allow themselves a breather, are constantly under power and are fast and groovy throughout the album. „No Sins To Confess“ is an exciting album that will sweep you away. (8 out of 10 points)

SHADOW OF THE TALISMAN „As above, so below“

SHADOW OF THE TALISMAN came together in 2022. But you shouldn’t think they’re still green behind the ears. Because what they deliver on their debut „As above, so below“ is worthy to hear. In the overall picture, it is noticeable that the playing times of the songs are often longer than average. The last song „So Below“ even lasts 09:29 minutes. But there are also short, stringent songs like „Fiery Descent“, which only run for just over three minutes.

SHADOW OF THE TALISMAN are therefore open to different approaches, as long as it bangs a lot. Basically, the band is going the hard way. It shakes and rattles the listener. There’s a lot of cool stuff in the songs. With the opener „Arise“, a furious storm that shreds everything.

The second song „What Is Real“ has a different musical approach and goes more in a rock direction, whereby the band likes to experiment with the vocals. Clean vocals and nasty hard vocals are a characteristic of SHADOW OF THE TALISMAN. The aforementioned „Fiery Descent“ is full throttle again and is short and crisp. It’s a dirty, dirty thrashing orgy with a fat load of thrash. The stark contrast comes with the appealing power ballad „Cursed“, which turns up the heat towards the end.

SHADOW OF THE TALISMAN actually cover a wide range of the metal world in their songs. They are very good at what they do. Their mission is already fully realized on their debut, as they successfully strike with short, stringent attacks as well as providing pure entertainment with complex, exciting songs. (8,5 out of 10 points)

THE ODDEVEN „Outer Space Outtakes“

I would like to start with a short quote from the press release, which describes the sound of THE ODDEVEN as follows:

The OddEven are an alternative-metal-post-grunge band that go for riff-oriented hard rock with a massive groove and hypnotic kick that will have you spinning on your barstool.

My goodness… There’s a lot in that description, but after listening to the album for the first time I had to admit that this description is actually quite accurate. The men approach things with a good dose of humor, which you can tell from the cover artwork and also directly from the first song „First Encounter“.

In the opener, „First Encounter“ the band sings about a visit from aliens who provide an unforgettable party with imported mushrooms from their home planet. Massive riffs and powerful drums create a strong groove. Singer Grant Walker’s distinctive vocal delivery is also striking. There is real power in it. And the guitar solo intensifies the trip in a crazy way.

The songs have a nice heavy groove and boom out of the speakers. THE ODDEVEN also come across as pretty laid-back during their show, which makes for a good coolness factor overall. The certain grunge factor, which can often be felt, is also responsible for this. The song „Soul“, for example, starts off pretty relaxed, but then mutates into a ultra heavy monster that smashes everything.

One drawback, however, is the very short playing time of 30 minutes. Luckily, there are no sags, so at least you get an excellent 30 minutes her, cause the songs are really a hell of a lot of fun! (8,5 out of 10 points)

TO OBEY A TYRANT „Frigore Inferni“ EP

Now it’s time to get down to business, because TO OBEY A TYRANT invite you to a disturbing dark mass. The synonym ‚extreme metal‘ was created for bands like this. You can hardly generate a more extreme sound. The band paints the listener according to all the rules of merciless art.

The vocals will haunt you in all their most gruesome manifestations, while instrumentally you will get your ass kicked. TO OBEY A TYRANT are a nightmare that won’t let you go.
