The French band NIGHTMARE ( Facebook )has been around for more than 30 years now! Not much is left of the original line-up. Only Yves Campion has accompanied the band since its inception, apart from the break between 1988 and 1999. But that was a long time ago and we want to look ahead or rather devote ourselves to the present. And there is only good news to report. The pre-released title song „Aeternam“ from the album blew me away, because this is a perfectly arranged Power Metal song that is uncompromisingly hard and rough. The song was garnished by an epic chorus, which is a nice contrast to the wild instrumentation in the verses. Even a rocking guitar solo is on top of it. No wishes left unfulfilled!

Maximum power

So let’s see if the rest of the album can keep up the level and if there are any surprises. The dark galloper „Divine Nemesis“ also promises complete power metal artistry and was also served as an appetizer in advance.

The whole album takes the listener away into a dark colossal world. Sometimes symphonic elements are included and intensify the atmosphere.

I consider the new singer Madie (Faith In Agony), who has replaced her predecessor Maggy Luyten, to be one outstanding feature of the current line-up. She delivers a great show with her rock voice, but also masters the clean melodic parts and creates an epic component, which now and then gains even more power with a supporting chorus.

In the metal forge

NIGHTMARE have certainly given their sound a considerable degree of hardness. The overall concept is very well balanced and offers best entertainment in different forms. Every song offers its own little world. This is the way to go. There are rude dark hymns here, which I have not often heard from this music sector in such a sophisticated and top arranged way. The highlights on the album are very numerous. In the middle of the album there is the very cool and robust ballad „Crystal Lake“, which takes a little bit of speed. Especially the mystical beginning with the melodic seductive vocals introduces the song very nicely. Afterwards the song „Lights On“ offers a dynamic rock anthem with its hot wild guitar solo entry.

Way into the dark

The song „Lights On“ serves as an entertaining and refreshing interlude before the album continues to follow the path into the dark. „Aeternam“ forms the transition into the dark world. For me, „Under The Ice“ is another mega song that creates a powerful impressive atmosphere. Skilful tempo and mood changes, with sometimes dark deep male vocals adding to the dark atmosphere. The riffs are awesome and the lead guitar rushes horny through the song. The guitar solos are first-class and surprise the listener completely unexpectedly. Just awesome!

The male vocal part is a regular feature of the last songs and is superbly integrated. So also with the last song „Anneliese“. Sounds harmless, but it is not at all. Vocally, it is probably the most varied song on the whole album, with many surprising facets.

Result

Of course NIGHTMARE don’t sound like they did 30 years ago. That should be obvious. NIGHTMARE in 2020 stands for high-quality modern Power-Metal and continues the way of the last albums consequently and gives the sound a harder expression. With the new singer Madie they have made a real stroke of luck. She is very versatile and shines in a classic rough rock tube voice, but can act in a sensitive melodic way. And with the rest of the band she has fantastic support, all of whom deliver an amazing performance. Pushing drums, rousing rough wild guitar riffs, outstanding guitar solos and a dynamic powerful bass give the formidable singer a great support. The male vocal parts give the sound a new twist and a dark sharpness. For me, the band has taken the right path and creates a highlight in their career. The quality is extraordinary. The album is definitely one of the best power metal albums of the year for me. I hope that NIGHTMARE will continue their way in the current line-up.

Power Metal par excellence

Die französische Band NIGHTMARE (Facebook) gibt es nun seit mehr als 30 Jahren!!! Von der ursprünglichen Besetzung ist allerdings nicht mehr viel übrig geblieben. Lediglich Yves Campion hat die Band seit ihrer Gründung begleitet. Und da war noch eine lange Pause, die zwischen 1988 und 1999 eingelegt wurde. Aber das ist nun lange her und wir wollen nach vorne blicken bzw. uns der Gegenwart widmen. Und da gibt es nur Gutes zu berichten. Der vorab veröffentlichte Titelsong „Aeternam“ des gleichnamigen Albums hatte mich förmlich weggeblasen, denn dieser ist ein perfekt arrangierter Power Metal Song, der kompromisslos hart und rau die Sau rauslässt. Garniert wurde der Song von einem epischen Refrain, der einen schönen Kontrast zu der fetzigen Instrumentierung in den Strophen darstellt. Sogar ein knalliges rockiges Gitarrensolo gibt es obendrauf. Da bleiben keine Wünsche offen.

Power ohne Ende

Schauen wir also, ob der Rest des Albums das Niveau halten kann und ob es irgendwelche Überraschungen gibt. Der düstere Galoppierer „Divine Nemesis“ verspricht ebenfalls vollendete Power-Metal-Kunst und wurde ebenfalls vorab als Appetizer serviert.

Das gesamte Album entführt den Hörer in einer dunkle kolossale Welt. Mitunter werden symphonische Elemente mit eingebaut, die zur Verdichtung der Atmosphäre beitragen.

Als herausragendes Merkmal der aktuellen Besetzung gilt für mich die neue Sängerin Madie (Faith In Agony), welche ihre Vorgängerin Maggy Luyten am Mikro abgelöst hat. Sie liefert mit ihrer Rockröhre ein tolle Show ab, beherrscht dabei aber auch die cleanen melodiösen Parts und erzeugt eine epische Komponente, die hin und wieder durch einen unterstützenden Chorus noch mehr an Kraft gewinnt.

In der Metalschmiede

haben NIGHTMARE jedenfalls ihrem Sound einen beachtlichen Härtegrad verpasst. Das Gesamtkonzept ist sehr gut ausbalanciert und bietet beste Unterhaltung in jeglicher Form. Jeder Song bietet für sich eine eigene kleine Welt. Das ist der Weg, den man weiter beschreiten sollte. Hier existieren rüde dunkle Hymnen, die ich so ausgefeilt und top arrangiert nicht oft aus diesem Musikbereich gehört habe. Die Highlights auf dem Album sind sehr zahlreich. In der Mitte des Albums findet sich die sehr coole kernige Düsterballade „Crystal Lake“, die mal ein wenig Fahrt rausnimmt. Gerade der mystische Beginn mit dem melodisch verführerischen Gesang führt den Song sehr schön ein. Im Anschluss offeriert der Song „Lights On“ mit seinem geilen fetzigen Gitarrensoloeinstieg eine dynamische Rockhymne.

Der Weg ins Dunkle

Der Song „Lights On“ dient als kurzweiliges erfrischendes Zwischenspiel, bevor das Album immer weiter und weiter den Pfad ins Dunkle geht. Der Titelsong „Aeternam“ bildet den Übergang in die dunkle Welt. „Under The Ice“ ist für mich ein weiterer Megasong, der eine mächtige beeindruckende Atmosphäre erschafft. Geschickte Tempi- und Stimmungswechsel, wobei auch mal dunkle tiefe männliche Vocals die düstere Stimmung verstärken. Die Riffs sind hammermäßig und die Leadgitarre fetzt dermaßen geil durch den Song, dass es nur so kracht. Die Gitarrensoli sind erstklassig und nicht nach „Schema F“ in den Song eingebaut, sondern überraschen den Hörer völlig unerwartet. Einfach nur geil!

Der männliche Gesangspart hält bei den letzten Songs regelmäßig Einzug und wird super eingebunden. So auch bei dem letzten Song „Anneliese“. Hört sich harmlos an, ist er aber ganz und gar nicht. Gesanglich wohl der abwechslungsreichste Song auf dem ganzen Album, der mit vielerlei überraschenden Facetten aufwarten kann.

Fazit

Natürlich klingt man nicht mehr wie vor 30 Jahren. Das sollte wohl klar sein. NIGHTMARE im Jahre 2020 stehen für modernen hochwertigen Power-Metal und setzen damit den Weg der letzten Alben konsequent fort und verpassen dem Sound einen noch stärkeren Härtegrad. Mit der neuen Sängerin Madie hat man einen wahren Glücksgriff gemacht. Sie ist sehr vielseitig einsetzbar und brilliert in klassischer rauer Rockröhrenmanier, kann aber gefühlvoll melodisch agieren. Und mit dem Rest der Truppe hat sie eine fantastische Unterstützung, die allesamt eine Wahnsinnsleistung abliefern. Pushende Drums, mitreißende raue fetzige Gitarrenriffs, herausragende Gitarrensoli und ein dynamischer kraftvoller Bass geben der formidablen Sängerin eine grandiose Plattform. Den Einsatz der männlichen Gesangparts geben dem Sound nochmals eine neue Wendung und eine dunkle Schärfe. Für mich hat die Band den richtigen Weg bestritten und einen vorläufigen Höhepunkt erreicht. Die Qualität ist außerordentlich gut. Das Album gehört für mich definitiv mit zu den besten Power-Metal-Alben des Jahres. Ich hoffe sehr, dass NIGHTMARE in der aktuellen Besetzung ihren Weg fortsetzen.
