Die schwedische Band S.O.R.M sind Stammgäste bei ‚metal-heads.de‘ und wir begleiten die Band nun schon einige Jahre. Es gibt etliche Berichte bei uns über die Band zu finden. So ist es natürlich eine Ehrensache, dass wir über die brandneue Single „The Sacrifice“ berichten. S.O.R.M verehren die Band W.A.S.P. und deshalb orientieren sich viele Songs an deren Stil und die Stimme von Micke Holm lässt unweigerlich Assoziationen zu W.A.S.P. aufkommen. Und wie könnte man die neue Single besser vorstellen, als wenn man einfach mal ein kleines Interview mit Sänger/Gitarrist Micke Holm macht.

MH: Hallo Micke! Es ist schon einige Zeit her, dass dein letztes Album „Under My Skin“ erschienen ist. Die Zeit vergeht wie im Flug. Es wurde im August 2023 veröffentlicht und im März 2024 erschien dann eine Version des Titeltracks „Under My Skin“, der dir auch persönlich viel bedeutet, mit dem großartigen Gitarristen Douglas Blair von W.A.S.P. Bevor wir zu deiner neuen Single kommen, würde ich gerne wissen, was in der Zwischenzeit passiert ist.

Micke: Ja, die Zeit vergeht wirklich wie im Flug. Es ist schon eine Weile her. Wir waren unterwegs und haben Shows gespielt, geplant und neues Material geschrieben.

MH: Wie ist es der Band S.O.R.M ergangen? Seid ihr viel unterwegs gewesen? Gab es herausragende Erlebnisse?

Micke: Der Band geht es gut. Es wurde viel geplant. Es sind lustige und schlimmere Dinge passiert ;).

Eine schlimme Sache, die passiert ist, ist, dass ich fast an einer Lebensmittelvergiftung gestorben bin. Wir spielten eine Show, gingen noch auf der Aftershow-Party und am nächsten Tag wachte ich mit 40,5 Grad Fieber auf. Es stellte sich dann heraus, dass ich bereits eine starke Gallenblaseninfektion hatte, die sich auf meine Leber ausgebreitet hatte. Dies war tatsächlich eine lebensbedrohliche Situation. Glücklicherweise habe ich es durchgestanden.

Eine schöne Sache, auf die ich sehr stolz bin, ist, dass ich 10 Weihnachtsshows mit Legende Mikkey Dee und Björn Speed Strid machen durfte. Das hat verdammt viel Spaß gemacht.

Eine weitere schöne Erfahrung wäre z.B., dass ich bei jeder Show, bei der wir dem Publikum unseren Song „Under My Skin“ präsentieren, dass Gefühl verspüre, dass die Leute sich wirklich damit identifizieren können und von der Essenz des Liedes gefangen genommen werden.

MH: Ich habe kürzlich auf Facebook gesehen, dass ihr auch auf dem Sweden Rock Festival wart. Wie war es dort?

Micke: Ja, ich war beim Sweden Rock. Zuerst war ich Teil der Bühnencrew bei der Band ‚The Nightflight Orchestra‘, bei der auch meine Freundin Anna Brygårds singt. Anschließend habe ich einfach nur Bier getrunken und tollen Bands zugeschaut.

MH: Eure Musik ist vielseitig. Ihr habt auch echte Partyhymnen in eurer Sammlung, wie zum Beispiel „I Die For My Rock N Roll“. Wie viel von deinem Lebensmotto steckt in diesem Song? Wie wichtig ist Rock n Roll oder Musik im Allgemeinen für dich?

Micke: Alle Texte, die ich schreibe, sind aus meinen Lebenserfahrungen und Dingen, die ich gesehen und durchgemacht habe. Meine Musik bedeutet mir alles. Sie ist ein wichtiger Grund, warum ich noch am Leben bin. Sie beinhaltet viele ernste Songs mit echten Hintergründen, die aus deinem Leben oder deiner persönlichen Gedankenwelt stammen. „Under My Skin“ zum Beispiel war ein unglaublich persönlicher Song über Angstzustände und Depressionen.

MH: Die neue Single „The Sacrifice“ scheint ein weiterer Song zu sein, der einen ernsten Hintergrund hat und zum Nachdenken anregt. Kannst du uns sagen, worum es in diesem Song geht?

Micke: Nun, ihr wisst wie es im Leben läuft. Wir alle müssen Opfer bringen, um im Leben voranzukommen. Manche Opfer sind größer als andere. Manchmal schreien wir nach einem Helden, der uns hilft, den richtigen Weg zu gehen. Manchmal sind wir zu träge oder zu ängstlich, um einen neuen Weg im Leben einzuschlagen, weil wir unsere Komfortzone nicht verlassen wollen. Wenn du einen neuen Job bekommst, eine neue Beziehung, öffnet sich ein neuer Weg. Oder wenn man mit Selbstmordgedanken kämpft, braucht man Hilfe, um auf den richtigen Weg geführt zu werden. Manchmal bittet man sogar eine höhere Macht, einem zu helfen.

MH: Glaubst Du an höhere Mächte oder an einen Gott oder an das Schicksal? Oder glaubst du, dass jeder sein Leben hauptsächlich selbst in der Hand hat?

Micke: Ich glaube an das Schicksal. Wir sind nur manchmal zu unwissend, um daran zu glauben. Ich glaube, dass alle guten und schlechten Dinge, die im Leben passieren, darauf zurückzuführen sind, dass das Schicksal dies für uns entscheidet. Aber wir haben es in der Hand, ob wir die Entscheidung, die uns das Schicksal präsentiert, akzeptieren wollen.

MH: Wie weit ist das Songwriting für das nächste Album gediehen? Kann man irgendwie beschreiben wie es sich diesmal anhören wird? Könnt ihr uns ungefähr sagen, wann das Album erscheinen wird?

Micke: Wir haben alle Ideen für die neuen Alben geschrieben. Wir sind eine Band, die W.A.S.P. verehren. Also werden wir weiterhin Songs im Stil von W.A.S.P. schreiben! Unser neues Album könnte man als Mischung zwischen deren Alben „Helldorado“ und „Dying For The World“. Wir planen, unser neues Album im März/April 2026 zu veröffentlichen.

MH: Im November werdet ihr auch Teil des beliebten THE ABYSS Festivals in Göteborg sein. Kannst du uns etwas darüber erzählen und unseren Lesern sagen, warum es sich lohnt, dorthin zu reisen?

Micke: Das Abyss Festival ist ein rohes Metal/Rock-Festival der alten Schule. Wenn du keine Bands magst, die bei Sweden Rock oder Time to Rock spielen, wirst du das Abyss Festival lieben. 3 Tage lang reiner Old School Metal.

The Swedish band S.O.R.M are regular guests at ‘metal-heads.de’ and we have been following the band for several years now. You can find several reports about the band here. So of course it’s a matter of honor that we report on the brand new single “The Sacrifice”. S.O.R.M worship the band W.A.S.P. and therefore many songs are based on their style and the voice of Micke Holm inevitably brings up associations with W.A.S.P.. And what better way to introduce the new single than by simply doing a little interview with singer/guitarist Micke Holm.

MH: Hello Micke! It’s been a while since your last album „Under My Skin“ was released. Time flies by. It was released in August 2023 and then in March 2024 a version of the title track „Under My Skin“, which also means a lot to you personally, was released with the great guitarist Douglas Blair from W.A.S.P. Before we get to your new single, I would like to know what has happened in the meantime.

Micke: Yes, time really does fly by. It’s been a while. We’ve been on the road playing shows, planning and writing new material.

MH: How has the band S.O.R.M been? Have you been on the road a lot? Have there been any exceptional experiences?

Micke: The band is doing well. A lot has been planned. Funny and worse things have happened.

One bad thing that happened is that I almost died from food poisoning. We played a show, went to the after-show party and the next day I woke up with a fever of 40.5 degrees. It then turned out that I already had a severe infection in my gallbladder that had spread to my liver. This was indeed a life-threatening situation. Fortunately, I got through it.

One nice thing I’m very proud of is that I was able to do 10 Christmas shows with legend Mikkey Dee and Björn Speed Strid. That was a hell of a lot of fun.

Another nice experience would be, for example, that at every show where we present our song „Under My Skin“ to the audience, I feel that people can really identify with it and are captured by the essence of the song.

MH: I recently saw on Facebook that you were also at the Sweden Rock Festival. How was it there?

Micke: Yes, I was at Sweden Rock. At first I was part of the stage crew for the band ‚The Nightflight Orchestra‘, in which my friend Anna Brygårds also sings. Then I just drank beer and watched great bands.

MH: Your music is versatile. You also have real party anthems in your collection, such as „I Die For My Rock N Roll“. How much of your life motto is in this song? How important is rock n roll or music in general to you?

Micke: All the lyrics I write are from my life experiences and things I’ve seen and been through. My music means everything to me. It’s a big reason why I’m still alive. It contains a lot of serious songs with real backgrounds that come from your life or your personal thoughts. For example, „Under My Skin“ was an incredibly personal song about anxiety and depression.

MH: The new single „The Sacrifice“ seems to be another song that has a serious background and is thought-provoking. Can you tell us what this song is about?

Micke: Well, you know what life demands. We all have to make sacrifices to get ahead in life. Some sacrifices are bigger than others. Sometimes we cry out for a hero to help us get on the right path. Sometimes we are too lazy or too scared to take a new path in life because we don’t want to leave our comfort zone. When you get a new job, a new relationship, a new path opens up. Or if you are struggling with suicidal thoughts, you need help to be guided on the right path. Sometimes you even ask a higher power to help you.

MH: Do you believe in higher powers or in a god or in fate? Or do you believe that everyone is mainly in control of their own life?

Micke: I believe in fate. We are just sometimes too ignorant to believe in it. I believe that all the good and bad things that happen in life are due to fate deciding for us. But it’s up to us whether we want to accept the decision that fate presents us with.

MH: How far has the songwriting for the next album progressed? Is there any way to describe what it will sound like this time? Can you tell us roughly when the album will be released?

Micke: We wrote all the ideas for the new albums. We are a band who worship W.A.S.P.. So we will continue to write songs in the style of W.A.S.P.! Our new album could be seen as a mix between their albums „Helldorado“ and „Dying For The World“. We plan to release our new album in March/April 2026.

MH: In November you will also be part of the popular THE ABYSS festival in Gothenburg. Can you tell us something about it and tell our readers why it’s worth traveling there?

Micke: Abyss Festival is a raw old school metal/rock festival. If you don’t like bands that play at Sweden Rock or Time to Rock, you will love Abyss Festival. 3 days of pure old school metal.

SWANSONG (Facebook) aus Finnland wollen am 01.Dezember mit ihrem Debüt „Awakening“ angreifen. Die female-fronted Band hat dafür 11 brandheiße Songs geschmiedet, mit denen sie euch einheizen wollen.

Gesanglich gibt sich Frontfrau Jemiina gnadenlos. Cleane Stimmen gibt es nicht! Dafür schmettert sie extreme Vocals, die es in sich haben. Reizvoll ist dabei, dass SWANSONG rein instrumental gar nicht so finster unterwegs sind. SWANSONG klingen hart, spielen aber melodisch auf, so dass der Sound sogar häufig Heavy Metal Vibes durchklingen lässt. So ergibt sich ein wirklich beflügelnder Kontrast zu den harschen Vocals, die teilweise so hart verstörend geschmettert werden, dass einem Angst und Bange wird.

Man höre sich z.B. „Blood Widow“ an. Das ist ein echt krasser Song! Geradezu teuflisch erklingen die vernichtenden Vocals! Der Song gefällt mir aber auch von seiner Gesamterscheinung. Das Riffing gestaltet sich bei dem Midtempo-Zerstörer schön variabel, von super fies bis melodisch.

„Burning Flames“ ist ein treibender Song, der euch nicht minder eindrucksvoll die hervorragenden Qualitäten der Band vor den Latz knallt. Hier bekommt ihr auch eines der vielen famosen Gitarrensolos von Topi Pitkänen zu hören.

Heavy Metal Vibes

Die Gitarrenarbeit bei SWANSONG ist in allen Belangen wirklich überragend und zieht sich durch das gesamte Album. Sie ist nicht immer typisch für Melodic Death Metal, sondern präsentiert sich häufig überraschend locker und leicht, wie z.B. beim zweiten Song „Become“, dessen melodisches Riffing sich im Kopf festsetzt. Insgesamt geht es allerdings forsch und wild voran. Ruhigere Momente finden sich auf Album nicht.

Die extremen und zugleich variablen Vocals machen natürlich wie bereits erwähnt einen speziellen reizvollen Kontrast aus und verpassen dem Sound die brutale vehemente Note. Trotzdem wäre es für mich spannend und interessant zu hören gewesen wie Sängerin Jemiina in manchen Momenten die Songs mit einer cleanen Stimme bedient hätte. So hätte man evtl. noch mehr charakteristische Details in den Songs erschaffen können. Aber auch so bietet man auf dem Album Songs, die wirklich von erstklassiger Qualität sind und den Hörern viele Highlights schenken. Die Produktion ist darüber hinaus ebenfalls erste Sahne.

Beim Song „Awakening“ hört man dann doch mal einen anderen stimmlichen Ansatz. Allerdings beschränkt sich das auf kurze Phasen, in denen Jemiina mit einer Flüsterstimme zu hören ist. Jedoch ist es ein Element, welches einen zusätzlichen Wiedererkennungswert entstehen lässt. Zudem ist der Übergang in das großartige Gitarrensolo echt super gelöst.

Fazit

SWANSONG legen mit „Awakening“ ein immens starkes Debüt hin. Hier wird ein interessante Ausgestaltung des Melodic Death Metal geboten, der mit einer krassen Extremvocalistin daherkommt und zudem mit einer famosen Gitarrenarbeit glänzen kann, die man so nicht unbedingt in dem Genre erwarten würde. Es ist eine Sammlung von erstklassigen Songs, die viele Höhepunkte zu bieten haben. „Awakening“ ist ein mehr als gelungener Einstand und somit landen SWANSONG in den Beginn der 9-Punkte Zone.

SWANSONG (Facebook) from Finland want to attack on December 1st with their debut „Awakening“. The female-fronted band has forged 11 rough songs for it, with which they want to heat you up.

Charismatic singer Jemiina is merciless. There are no clean voices! Instead, she belts out extreme vocals that really pack a punch. What’s appealing is that SWANSONG are not so dark in purely instrumental terms. SWANSONG sound hard, but play melodically, so that the sound even often has heavy metal vibes. This results in a really inspiring contrast to the harsh vocals, which are sometimes so harshly and disturbingly belted out that it’s scary.

Just listen to „Blood Widow“, for example. That’s a really killer song! The devastating vocals sound diabolical! But I also like the overall appearance of the song. The riffing on this mid-tempo destroyer is nicely varied, from super nasty to melodic.

„Burning Flames“ is a driving song that is no less impressive in its demonstration of the band’s outstanding qualities. Here you also get to hear one of Topi Pitkänen’s many famous guitar solos.

Heavy Metal Vibes

SWANSONG’s guitar work is truly outstanding in all respects and runs through the entire album. It is not always typical for melodic death metal, but is often surprisingly rocky rousing, such as on the second song „Become“, whose melodic riffing sticks in your head. Overall, however, the show thing is brisk and wild. There are no quieter moments on the album.

As already mentioned, the extreme and variable vocals are of course a particularly attractive contrast and give the sound a brutal, vehement note. Nevertheless, it would have been exciting and interesting for me to hear how singer Jemiina would have handled the songs with a clean voice in some moments. This might have created even more characteristic details in the songs. But even so, the album offers songs that are really of first-class quality and give the listener many highlights. The entire production sounds also perfect.

In the song „Awakening“ you can hear a different vocal approach. However, this is limited to short phases in which Jemiina can be heard with a whispering voice. However, it is an element that creates an additional recognition value. In addition, the transition into the great guitar solo is really great.

Conclusion

SWANSONG present an immensely strong debut with „Awakening“. This is an interesting take on melodic death metal, which features a blatant extreme vocalist and also boasts some great guitar work. You wouldn’t necessarily expect this style in this genre. It is a collection of first-class songs that have many highlights to offer. „Awakening“ is a more than successful debut and thus SWANSONG land in the beginning of the 9-point zone.

Metalcore / Modern Metal

BENEATH MY FEET werden am kommenden Freitag ihr neues Album „In Parts, Together“ unter dem Label ‚Noble Demon‚ veröffentlichen. Ich persönlich habe große Erwartungen in die Band gesetzt und war gespannt, ob sie diesen Erwartungen gerecht werden. In einem Interview mit Labelfounder Patrick Walch hat dieser mir versichert, dass das Label nach einem eher ruhigen letzten Jahr das Jahr 2023 wieder Vollgas gibt und mit vielen hochkarätigen Veröffentlichungen Vollgas geben wird. Nun, wer mich kennt, der weiß bereits, dass ich hier bei ‚metal-heads.de‘ keine Gurkenscheiben vorstelle. Mit so etwas halte ich mich angesichts so vieler hochwertiger Releases nicht auf und konzentriere mich auf eine Auswahl der Alben, die es (meiner Meinung nach) verdient haben vorgestellt zu werden. Also legen wir los mit BENEATH MY FEET.

Abriss

Es wird nicht lange rumgeeiert! Hier geht es direkt in die Vollen! „Caught In A Hurricane“ lässt den Boden beben und die Wände wackeln. Der übermächtige Bass sorgt für Vibrationen in der Ohrmuschel und für einen fetten Groove, der natürlich von den Drums noch weiter intensiviert wird. Die obligatorisch fetten Riffs dürfen selbstverständlich nicht fehlen. Gesanglich bekommt man in die Fresse, doch man darf sich auch von eingängigen Refrains verwöhnen lassen.

Die gefälligen Melodien

sind auch ein Teil von BENEATH MY FEET. Das steht außer Frage. Aber die Mischung passt meiner Meinung nach hervorragend und die Freunde harter Metalkunst werden hier nicht enttäuscht werden. Ganz im Gegenteil. Grundsätzlich sind die Songs mit einer immensen Power ausgestattet, die einen förmlich von den Füßen fegt. Dabei kann die Band auch gerne die cleanen Vocals einschränken oder ganz darauf verzichten wie beim Song „Dig My Grave“.

Abseits der Aggressivität

Die Band gönnt dem Hörer auch etwas entspanntere Momente, wenn auch nicht viele. Dazu gehören die Songs „Departure“ und „Far From Home“. „Departure“ stützt sich nicht primär auf Aggressivität, sondern setzt eher auf melodische Komponenten. Es ein ausgeglichener Song, wobei man sogar in einem sehr ruhigen bedächtigen Schlusspart mit einer schmeichelnden Trompete und seichten Pianoklängen überrascht wird. Sehr cool gemacht!

„Far From Home“ hat grundsätzlich balladeske Züge, doch auch hier kann man sich auf eine deftige Überraschung freuen, nachdem der Song zunächst sehr atmosphärisch und cleanem Gesang eingeleitet wird.

Fazit

BENEATH MY FEET haben sich mit dem Album „In Parts, Together“ in die Topliga des Metalcore/Modern Metal geschossen. Das Album ist vollgepackt mit starken Tracks, wobei nicht jeder Song die Qualität der herausragenden Höhepunkte des Albums erreicht. Doch es gelingt der Band durchaus eine gewisse Abwechslung ins Spiel zu bringen, um das Erlebnis nicht zu gleichförmig werden zu lassen. So setzt man nicht nur auf pure Eskalation, sondern gewährt dem Hörer auch mal eingängige melodische Einlagen, die aber ebenfalls mit gehöriger Power dargeboten werden. So entsteht ein überaus stimmiges Gesamtkonzept, das zu unterhalten weiß. Da sind sogar richtige Hymnen dabei, wobei mir gerade spontan der Track „One More Time“ einfällt, der einfach der Hammer ist!

Metalcore / Modern Metal

BBENEATH MY FEET will release their new album „In Parts, Together“ next Friday under the label ‚Noble Demon‚ . Personally, I had high expectations for the band and was curious to see if they would live up to those expectations. In an interview with labelfounder Patrick Walch, he assured me that after a rather quiet last year, the label will go full throttle again in 2023 with many high profile releases. Well, those who know me already know that I do not present rotten eggs here at ‚metal-heads.de‘. I don’t bother with such things in view of so many high quality releases and concentrate on albums that deserve to be presented in my opinion. So let’s start with BENEATH MY FEET.

Destruction

There is no slowly introduction! Here it goes directly the hard way! „Caught In A Hurricane“ makes the earth shake. The overpowering bass provides vibrations in the auricle and a fat groove, which is of course further intensified by the drums. The obligatory fat riffs may not be missing, of course. Vocally, you get in the face, but you may also be spoiled by catchy choruses.

The pleasing melodies

are also a part of BENEATH MY FEET. There is no question about that. But the mixture fits perfectly in my opinion and the friends of hard Metal art will not be disappointed here. Quite the opposite. Basically the songs are equipped with an immense power that literally sweeps you off your feet. The band can also like to limit the clean vocals or do without them completely as in the song „Dig My Grave“.

Away from aggression

The band also allows the listener some more relaxed moments, although not many. These include the songs „Departure“ and „Far From Home“. „Departure“ does not rely primarily on aggressiveness, but rather relies on melodic components. It a balanced song, even surprising you in a very quiet thoughtful final part with a flattering trumpet and shallow piano sounds. Very cool done!

„Far From Home“ has basically balladic features, but also here you can look forward to a hefty surprise after the song is initially introduced very atmospheric and with clean vocals.

Conclusion

BENEATH MY FEET have shot themselves into the top league of Metalcore/Modern Metal with the album „In Parts, Together“. The album is packed with strong tracks, although not every song reaches the quality of the album’s highlights. But the band definitely manages to bring some variety to the game, so as not to make the experience too uniform. So they do not only rely on pure escalation, but also grant the listener catchy melodic interludes, which are also presented with proper power. Thus, an extremely coherent overall concept is created, which knows how to entertain. There are even real hymns, whereby I just spontaneously think of the track „One More Time“, which is simply awesome!

Patrick Walch ist Gründer dieses Labels und zusammen mit seinem Team hat er verdammt viel erreicht. NOBLE DEMON hat sich in dem hart umkämpften Business erfolgreich etabliert. Für uns von ‚metal-heads.de‘ war es ein willkommener Anlass mit Patrick Walch ein Interview zu führen.

Ein gewagter Schritt

MH: Hallo Patrick! Wir von metal-heads.de gratulieren Euch ganz herzlich zum dreijährigen Bestehen von Noble Demon. Und wir danken Dir für die Möglichkeit dieses Interview zu führen. 2019 hast Du das Label gegründet, nachdem Du lange Zeit bei Nuclear Blast gearbeitet hattest. Ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass so ein Schritt kein leichter war, oder? Woher kam der Antrieb ein eigenes Label zu gründen und was war Deine damalige Vision?

Patrick: Vielen lieben Dank! Ich freue mich riesig über euren Support für unsere Neuheiten und es ehrt mich, dass ihr an dem Interview mit mir interessiert seid.
Ja, das war schon ein bisschen verrückt einen eigentlich guten und recht sicheren Job aufzugeben, um etwas völlig neues ins Blaue zu starten. Aber ich brauchte einfach die Veränderung und war nicht mehr zufrieden damit, wie alles lief damals.

Ich dachte mir, wenn ich mein eigener Chef bin und meine eigenen Entscheidungen treffen kann! Dann bin ich einfach flexibler, kann effizienter und erfüllender arbeiten. Zudem kann ich mir die Musiker aussuchen, mit denen ich arbeiten möchte. Es ist schon was ganz anderes, wenn man einfach machen kann was man will… 😀 Das ist jetzt zwar alles noch auf kleinerem Level, aber wir haben ein optimales Setup und geniale Bands. Mit unserer Erfahrung und dem soliden Gerüst denke ich, kann NOBLE DEMON richtig groß werden.

Allein oder nicht allein? Das war die Frage!

MH: So ein Vorhaben kann man eigentlich nicht ganz alleine aufziehen. Wer war von deiner Idee begeistert und ist mit ins Boot gesprungen?

Patrick: Das stimmt allerdings! Ich wollte am Anfang alles alleine machen und noch kleiner halten, nur noch digital veröffentlichen und parallel online vermarkten. Das schien mir recht simpel aber innovativ und ich hätte alles selbst in der Hand. Aber ich merkte schnell, wenn wir schneller wachsen wollen und auch größeren Bands den kompletten Label-service bieten wollen, dann brauche ich eben auch jemanden, der mir beim physischen Vertrieb, Produktion, Accounting, Verlag etc. helfen kann.

Ein alter Bekannter war Feuer und Flamme, als ich mit ihm darüber sprach. Er ist genau in diesen Bereichen super vernetzt und hat schon viele Jahre Erfahrung. Deshalb stand nach nur einem Meeting-Nachmittag der grobe Plan inklusive Label-Name und Aufgabenverteilung. Joachim Keil von UCM.ONE ist das Rückgrat im Hintergrund von Noble Demon. Ohne ihn würde das Label niemals so professionell auf dem Level agieren können, wie wir das heute tun. Dafür und für sein Vertrauen in meine Arbeit und in meinen Riecher als A&R (Artists and Repertoire) bin ich ihm auf ewig dankbar.

Gute Entwicklung

MH: Dein Mut und die Arbeit scheinen sich ausgezahlt zu haben. Viele tolle Bands haben sich mittlerweile im Hause Noble Demon eingefunden. Mit welchen Bands hat es eigentlich begonnen und wie habt Ihr die Bands für Euch zu Beginn gewinnen können? Wird es dieses Jahr wieder neuen Zuwachs geben? Darf man da schon etwas verraten?

Patrick: Vielen Dank! Ich bin sehr stolz auf unsere beeindruckenden Bands und bin auch ihnen dankbar für ihr Vertrauen in uns.

Alles fing mit No Raza und Dawn Of Solace an. Mit Juan von No Raza war ich zu dem Zeitpunkt schon etwas länger in Kontakt und da wir uns super verstanden. Ich verliebte mich sofort in ihre Musik. Daher war der Wunsch auf eine Zusammenarbeit naheliegend, als sich die Möglichkeit ergab. Ich denke für viele Musiker ist es heute vor allem wichtig, dass die Leute, die ihre Musik professionell in die Welt verbreiten sollen, diese nicht nur als Produkt sehen und mit Zahlen bewerten, sondern wirklich daran glauben. Und sie sollten alles dafür tun, ihre Lieblingsmusik erfolgreich zu machen und auch anderen Metalheads anbieten zu können.

Mit Tuomas Saukkonen war es ähnlich. Das Timing stimmte, da er Dawn Of Solace nach über zwölf Jahren wiederbeleben wollte und ich ihm Digitalvertrieb und Online Marketing dafür anbot. Wir waren uns darüber eigentlich schon einig, doch wenige Wochen darauf konnte ich ihn damit überraschen, dass wir ihm nun auch physisches Produkt mit Vertrieb und in der Folge auch geile Splatter-Vinyl Versionen, Merch und Verlag anbieten konnten.

Dank Dawn Of Solace

hatten wir in Finnland dann schnell ein gewisses Underground-standing, was zu weiteren top Signings führte von Bands, die ich damals teilweise noch gar nicht kannte wie z.B. Kaunis Kuolematon, Humavoid, Red Moon Architect, Oceanhoarse und so weiter. Tuomas kannte ich noch von seiner Zeit mit BEFORE THE DAWN bei Nuclear Blast, genau wie auch Henric von NIGHT CROWNED, mit dem ich damals mit Cipher System in Donzdorf arbeitete.

Und so führte dann eines zum nächsten und heute bekomme ich im Schnitt eigentlich täglich neue Bandbewerbungen. Darunter ist teilweise gute Musik zu finden, aber leider in den meisten Fällen eben nicht auf einem Niveau, womit man als noch kleineres Label sinnvoll arbeiten könnte.

Wir hatten erst Ende letzten Jahres einige neue Signings mit dem Release unserer Jahrescompilation angekündigt (Swansong, Rise To Fall, Voidfallen und Winterhorde), aber wir sind permanent in Kontakt mit coolen, potentiellen Noble Demon Bands. Ich hoffe sehr, wir haben da bald wieder gute Neuigkeiten für euch alle…

Steigende Followerzahlen

MH: Seitdem steigen die Followerzahlen stetig. Bei Facebook habt Ihr nun die 10.000’er Marke geknackt. Und das alles trotz der COVID-19 Krise, die Euch ebenfalls voll dazwischengefunkt hat. Seid Ihr zufrieden mit dem, was Ihr bisher erreicht habt?

Patrick: Ja, vieles hatte sich während dieser Phase ja ohnehin in Richtung Internet verlegt, was uns teilweise in die Karten spielte. Aber andererseits hatten wir direkt bei den ersten physischen Releases Lieferprobleme und Verzögerungen, was natürlich nicht so geil ist, wenn man ein neues Label startet und mit voller Power auf bestimmte Release-Dates hinarbeitet.

Aber bis auf diese anfänglichen Hürden hätte es eigentlich nicht besser laufen können. Wir haben gerade auch 5 Mio. Views auf Youtube erreicht bei über 14.000 Subscribers und auf Instagram stehen wir kurz vor der 2.000-Follower-Marke mit 25 Bands unter Vertrag.

Das sind für uns nicht nur nackte Zahlen, sondern Fans, die uns und unsere Musiker unterstützen indem sie unsere Social Posts mit ihren Freunden teilen, liken, unsere Produkte kaufen, die Musik streamen und auf Konzerte gehen. Das ganze ist nur möglich durch diese Leute, die, wie wir, die Musik wertschätzen und ihre Lieblingsbands unterstützen. Wir sind sowohl diesen Fans, als auch den Medien wie ‚metal-heads.de‘ dankbar, dass sie nach wie vor an Metal glauben und diesen Stil und dieses Lebensgefühl, genau wie wir, leben und verbreiten.

Ein ruhiges Jahr 2022 für das Label…

MH: Das Jahr 2022 war ein schwieriges Jahr. Es gab zwar wieder eine Vielzahl von Releases, aber in der Veranstaltungsbranche war die Lage (fast) unplanbar. Konzerte und Festivals wurden reihenweise abgesagt. Für Euch war es ein relativ ruhiges Jahr, nicht wahr? Womit habt Ihr als Label das letzte Jahr verbracht?

Patrick: Wir hatten leider nicht viele neue Releases, was vor allem an Verzögerungen bei den Aufnahmen auf Bandseite lag. So warteten wir Monat für Monat vergebens auf fertige Alben. Wir hatten dann aber im Hintergrund unseren Online Shop gestartet, an der Vertriebsstruktur gefinetuned, Vinyl-Re-releases veröffentlicht, ein paar neue Bands gesigned und alles dafür vorbereitet, damit 2023 umso brachialer wird.

MH: Und es entwickelte sich noch ein Problem. Es gab erhebliche Schwierigkeiten, was die Produktion von Vinyls angeht. Hat sich das Problem relativiert oder wie ist zur Zeit die Lage?

Patrick: Die Vinyl-situation hat sich wieder etwas entspannt, ist aber immer noch sehr instabil, da ja alles auch von der Verfügbarkeit der Rohstoffe abhängt. Also drückt die Daumen, dass wir nicht wieder mit Verschiebungen rechnen müssen!

…aber dafür privates Glück!

Metalhead: Konntest Du dem letzten Jahr trotzdem etwas positives abgewinnen? Was war Dein persönliches Highlight des Jahres 2022?

Patrick: Ja, allerdings! Als wir am Anfang mit null Followern und Fans starteten und das neue Album der kolumbianisch-floridianischen Death Metal Band NO RAZA u.a. auch in Südamerika bewarben, fielen mir die positiven Kommentare auf Youtube und Facebook einer unserer ersten Fans aus Brasilien auf. Sie schrieb emotionaler und tiefgründiger als die meisten anderen und nach einer Weile bedankte ich mich einfach bei ihr für den Support.

Irgendwie blieben wir dann in Kontakt und schrieben immer mehr, bald täglich. Über Musik, später auch mehr privates und daraus entstand dann mehr. Blöderweise fing das gerade auch zu Beginn von Corona an, was 2020 ja extrem heftig in Brasilien wütete. So konnte ich erst nach eineinhalb Jahren, frisch geimpft endlich meine Traumfrau auch persönlich besuchen.

Dann ging alles recht schnell, so dass ich vor einem Jahr dann zu ihr nach Brasilien zog, wir haben Mitte 2022 geheiratet und wohnen jetzt mit zwei Hunden in einem kleinen Häuschen in der Nähe des Amazonas. Im Moment besuchen wir zum ersten mal zusammen meine Familie in Deutschland. So konnte sie auch mal Schnee erleben und Schlitten fahren. Also ja, 2022 hätte durchaus schlechter für mich laufen können. Ich kann mich nicht beschweren!

Was kommt im Jahr 2023?

MH: Ende letzten Jahres hat NOBLE DEMON wieder einen Sampler veröffentlicht, der viele Highlights aus bereits veröffentlichten Alben, aber auch Ausblicke auf kommende Releases bietet.
Nun steht das Jahr 2023 an! Mit welchen Highlights aus dem Hause NOBLE DEMON dürfen wir in diesem Jahr rechnen?

Patrick: Vieles ist noch nicht fix im Releaseplan, aber wir werden mit großer Sicherheit in den nächsten Monaten neue Alben veröffentlichen von OCEANHOARSE, BENEATH MY FEET, RISE TO FALL, SORM, REPENTANCE, KAUNIS KUOLEMATON, NO RAZA, SWANSONG, PLAGUESTORM und hoffentlich auch von NIGHT CROWNED, THE VICE, TULKAS und wer weiß, was da sonst noch ganz neues kommen mag…

Congratulations to three years of the NOBLE DEMON label!

We from ‚metal-heads.de‘ want to congratulate the young label NOBLE DEMON (Homepage/Facebook) very much to the three year anniversary. Patrick Walch is the founder of this label and together with his team he has achieved a hell of a lot and established himself successfully in the highly competitive business. For us from ‚metal-heads.de‘ it was a welcome occasion to do an interview with Patrick Walch, who created something great out of nothing.

A bold step

MH: Hello Patrick! We at ‚metal-heads.de‘ would like to congratulate you on the third anniversary of Noble Demon and thank you for the opportunity to do this interview. In 2019 you founded the label after working for Nuclear Blast for a long time. I could imagine that such a step was not an easy one, right? Where did the drive come from to start your own label and what was your vision at that time?

Patrick: Thank you very much! I’m very happy about your support for our new products and I’m honored that you are interested in the interview with me.
Yes, it was a bit crazy to give up a good and quite secure job to start something completely new. But I just needed the change and was no longer satisfied with how everything was going back then.

I thought, if I am my own boss and can make my own decisions, then I am simply more flexible, can work more efficiently and more fulfilling. And also I can decide with which musicians I want to work. It’s quite different when you can just do what you want… 😀 This is all still on a smaller level, but we have an optimal setup and great bands. With our experience and the solid framework I think NOBLE DEMON can become really big.

Alone or not alone? That was the question!

MH: You can’t really launch a project like this all by yourself. Who was enthusiastic about your idea and jumped on board?

Patrick: That’s true, though! In the beginning, I wanted to do everything on my own and keep it even smaller, publish only digitally and market online in parallel. That seemed quite simple but innovative and I would have everything in my own hands. But I quickly realized that if we want to grow faster and also offer the complete label service to bigger bands, then I also need someone who can help me with physical distribution, production, accounting, publishing, etc.

When I talked to an old acquaintance about it, who is super networked in exactly these areas and has many years of experience, he was on fire. And after only one meeting afternoon the rough plan including label name and distribution of tasks was ready. Joachim Keil from UCM.ONE is the backbone in the background of NOBLE DEMON. Without him the label could never operate as professionally on the level we do today. For that and for his trust in my work and in my talent as A&R (Artists and Repertoire) I am eternally grateful to him.

Good development

MH: Your courage and work seem to have paid off. Many great bands have joined Noble Demon in the meantime. With which bands did it actually start and how did you manage to win the bands for you at the beginning? Will there be any new additions this year? Is it allowed to reveal something already?

Patrick: Thank you very much! I am very proud of our impressive bands and am also grateful to them for their trust in us.

It all started with NO RAZA and DAWN OF SOLACE. I had been in contact with Juan from NO RAZA for a while at that point and since we got along great and I immediately fell in love with their music. So it was obvious that we would like to work together when the opportunity arose. I think for a lot of musicians today, the most important thing is that the people who are supposed to spread their music professionally to the world, don’t just see it as a product and evaluate it with numbers, but really believe in it. They have to do everything they can to make their favorite music successful and also offer it to other metalheads.

It was similar with Tuomas Saukkonen. The timing was right, as he wanted to revive DAWN OF SOLACE after more than twelve years and I offered him digital distribution and online marketing for it. We actually already agreed on that, but a few weeks later, I was able to surprise him with the fact that we could now also offer him physical product with distribution and subsequently also awesome splatter vinyl versions, merch and publishing.

we quickly had a certain underground-standing in Finland, which led to further top signings of bands I didn’t know at that time, like KAUNIS KUOLEMATON, HUMAVOID, RED MOON ARCHITECT, OCEANHORSE and so on. I knew Tuomas from his time with Before The Dawn at Nuclear Blast, as well as Henric from NIGHT CROWNED, with whom I worked with Cipher System in Donzdorf at that time.

And so one thing led to another, and today I receive new band applications on average every day, some of which contain good music, but unfortunately in most cases not at a level that would make sense for an even smaller label.

We just announced some new signings at the end of last year with the release of our annual compilation (SWANSONG, RISE TO FALL, VOIDFALLEN and WINTERHORDE) but we are permanently in contact with cool potential NOBLE DEMON bands. I really hope we will have some good news for you all soon…

Rising followers

MH: Since then, the number of followers has been rising steadily. On Facebook, you have now cracked the 10,000 mark. And all this in spite of the COVID-19 crisis, which has also fully interfered with you. Are you satisfied with what you have achieved so far?

Patrick: Yes, a lot of things had shifted towards the internet during this phase anyway, which partly played into our cards, but on the other hand we had delivery problems and delays directly with the first physical releases. This is of course not cool when you start a new label and work with full power towards certain release dates.

But apart from these initial hurdles, things couldn’t have gone better. We’ve also just reached 5 million views on YouTube with over 14,000 subscribers and on Instagram we’re close to the 2,000 follower mark with 25 bands under contract.

These are not just bare numbers for us, but fans who support us and our musicians by sharing our social posts with their friends, liking them, buying our products, streaming the music and going to concerts. All of this is only possible because of these people who, like us, value music and support their favorite bands. We are grateful to these fans as well as to the media like ‚metal-heads.de‘ that they still believe in Metal and live and spread this style and attitude towards life, just like we do.

A quiet year 2022 for the label…

MH: The year 2022 was a difficult one. There were a lot of releases again, but in the event industry the situation was (almost) unplannable. Concerts and festivals were cancelled by the dozen. It was a relatively quiet year for you, wasn’t it? What did you spend the last year doing as a label?

Patrick: Unfortunately we didn’t have many new releases, which was mainly due to delays in recording on the band side. We waited in vain month after month for finished albums. But then we had started our online store in the background, fine-tuned the distribution structure, released vinyl re-releases, signed a few new bands and prepared everything for 2023 to be all the more brute.

MH: And there was another problem. There were considerable difficulties regarding the production of vinyl. Has the problem been put into perspective or what is the situation at the moment?

Patrick: The vinyl situation has eased a bit, but is still unstable, because everything depends on the availability of raw materials. So keep your fingers crossed that we don’t have to expect postponements again!

…but private happiness!

Metalhead: Were you still able to find something positive in the past year? What was your personal highlight of 2022?

Patrick: Yes, indeed! When we started with zero followers and fans and promoted the new album of the Colombian-Floridian death metal band „No Raza“ among others in South America, I noticed the positive comments on Youtube and Facebook of one of our first fans from Brazil. She wrote more emotional and profound than most and after a while I just thanked her for the support.

Somehow we stayed in contact and wrote more and more, soon daily. About music, later also more private things and from that more developed. Stupidly, this also began at the beginning of Corona, which raged in 2020 extremely violent in Brazil. So only after one and a half years, freshly vaccinated, I could finally visit my dream woman in person.

Then everything went quite quickly, so that I then moved to her in Brazil a year ago, we married in mid-2022 and now live with two dogs in a small house near the Amazon. At the moment we visit my family in Germany for the first time together. So she could also experience snow and go sledding. So yes, 2022 could have been worse for me. I can’t complain!

What’s coming in 2023?

MH: At the end of last year NOBLE DEMON has again released a sampler, which offers many highlights from already released albums, but also previews of upcoming releases.
Now the year 2023 is upon us! Which highlights from NOBLE DEMON can we expect this year?

Patrick: A lot of things are not fixed in the release schedule yet, but we will most certainly release new albums from OCEANHOARSE, BENEATH MY FEET, RISE TO FALL, SORM, REPENTANCE, KAUNIS KUOLEMATON, NO RAZA, SWANSONG, PLAGUESTORM and hopefully also from NIGHT CROWNED, THE VICE, TULKAS and who knows what else might be coming very soon…

türmt sich immer weiter und weiter auf. Hier bei ´metal-heads.de´ die Vorstellung der brandneuen zweiten Single „FJÄTTRAD“. NIGHT CROWNED beschwören ein weiteres dunkles Ungetüm herauf und geben damit einen weiteren Vorgeschmack auf etwas Gewaltiges, welches bald über uns hereinbrechen wird.

NIGHT CROWNED (Facebook ) werden über ihr Label Noble Demon (Facebook ) das neue Album „Hädanfärd“ der Unterwelt entsteigen lassen (VÖ 09.07.2021). Die Wahl der Single ist mit „FJÄTTRAD“ sehr gut getroffen und zeigt mehr als eindrucksvoll, dass Black Metal nicht eintönig sein muss. „FJÄTTRAD“ ist ein wundervoller zerstörerischer Akt der Dunkelheit! Die melodisch prägnanten Leads wirken so pfeilschnell wie das Gift einer Königskobra, welches in einem erbarmungslosen Angriff in den Körper injiziert wird.

Somit bestätigen NIGHT CROWNED mit dem neuen Track nur, was ich schon bei der ersten Single prophezeit habe. Das Album „Hädanfärd“ wird der Hammer!

A black beast

piles up further and further. NIGHT CROWNED conjure up the second single „FJÄTTRAD„. Thus give another foretaste of the mighty storm that will soon break over us.

NIGHT CROWNED´s new Album „Hädanfärd“ (Facebook ) will arise from the underworld via label Noble Demon (Facebook ). The choice of the single is very well taken with „FJÄTTRAD“. It shows more than impressively that black metal does not have to be monotonous. „FJÄTTRAD“ is a wonderful destructive act of darkness! The melodically concise leads work as fast as the venom of a king cobra, which is injected into the body in an ultrafast attack.

Thus, NIGHT CROWNED with the new track only confirm what I have already predicted with the first single. The album „Hädanfärd“ will be a mighty hammer!

RED MOON ARCHITECT (Facebook) aus Finnland begeben sich am 23.10.2020 mit ihrem neuen Werk „Emptiness Weighs The Most“ (Label NOBLE DEMON) wieder auf die Reise durch dunkle Welten voll schöner träumerischer Melancholie. Und das passt doch hervorragend mit dem Einzug der dunklen kalten Jahreszeit zusammen. Mit ihrem melodischen Doom Metal konnte RED MOON ARCHITECT seit der Gründung im Jahre 2012 bisher schon viele Leute begeistern. Interessant zu wissen ist, dass die Band ganz zu Beginn noch ein Soloprojekt von Saku Moilanen war. Erst nach Fertigstellung des Debütalbums „Concealed Silence“ entstand nach und nach das komplette Line-Up, wobei Saku jetzt die Drums und das Keyboard bedient. Mit dem neuen Album geht man den Weg des letzten Albums „Return Of The Butterflies“ konsequent weiter.

Der gesangliche Kontrast

ist eines der Markenzeichen des aktuellen Albums. Die Sängerin Anni Valkonen ist im Gegensatz zu den vorherigen Alben noch häufiger mit ihrem sehr gefühlvollen Gesang zu hören. Ich begrüße diese Vorgehensweise, denn dadurch ergeben sich traumhafte Kompositionen und Klangwelten. Die Growls von Sänger Ville Rutanen sind echt krass. Keine Ahnung aus welchen Tiefen seines Innersten der knurrende Bär die Töne rausholt, aber das ist schon extrem. Sehr dunkel und voluminös gurgeln die Growls hervor und verfehlen ihre Wirkung in der Tat nicht. Die Growls sind das dunkelste Element im Sound von RED MOON ARCHITECT. Damit Ihr wisst, worüber ich überhaupt schreibe, dann sehr Euch mal das Video von dem Song „Chained“ an. Es ist der einzige Song, bei dem auf weibliche Vocals verzichtet wird.

Die Growls stellen bei RED MOON ARCHITECT meiner Meinung nach primär eine zusätzliche klangliche Komponente dar. Hier geht es um das Erzeugen von bestimmten Stimmungen, was wirklich gut funktioniert. Die Verständlichkeit der Texte wird dabei vernachlässigt. Auf Dauer würde sich meines Erachtens eine gewisse Monotonie einstellen, die aber gekonnt durch das Zusammenspiel mit Annis Gesang verhindert wird. Mehr noch… Dieses kontrastierende Gesangsbild zwischen den sehr markanten Growls und dem dem weiblichen cleanen Gesang wird hier hervorragend umgesetzt und erzeugt fantastische Hörerlebnisse. Dies zeigt z.B. der Song „Rise“ sehr deutlich.

Fazit

RED MOON ARCHITECT erschaffen ein betörend schönes Kunstwerk der Melancholie, dass Eure Seelen berühren wird. Sie setzen dabei auf das mittlerweile sehr häufig genutzte Kontrastprogramm mit männlichen und weiblichen Vocals. Exzessiv finstere Growls werden von fantastischen Melodien begleitet und kontrastieren beeindruckend mit dem beseelten weiblichen Gesang. Dabei verschmilzt alles zusammen mit der endlos harmonischen Instrumentierung. Als Höhepunkte sehe ich auch ganz klar die Sequenzen, in denen Anni und Ville gemeinsam agieren und beide Stimmen gleichzeitig erklingen. Das erzeugt ein besonderes Feeling und geht voll unter die Haut. Das sind epische Momente in Reinform. Insgesamt macht der Mix aus allen Komponenten einen wirklich sehr guten Eindruck und übt eine tolle Faszination aus. Die Songs erzeugen eine verdammt dichte Atmosphäre, der man sich nicht entziehen und in der man sich wunderbar verlieren kann.

On 2020-10-23, RED MOON ARCHITECT (Facebook) from Finland will again embark on a journey through dark worlds full of beautiful dreamy melancholy with their new album „Emptiness Weighs The Most“ (Label NOBLE DEMON). And this fits perfectly with the arrival of the dark cold season. With their melodic Doom Metal, RED MOON ARCHITECT have been able to inspire many people since their foundation in 2012. It is interesting to know that the band was a solo project of Saku Moilanen at the very beginning. After the completion of the debut album „Concealed Silence“ the complete line-up was created step by step, with Saku now handling the drums and the keyboard. With the new album the band consequently follows the way of the last album „Return Of The Butterflies“.

The vocal contrast

is one of the trademarks of the current album. The singer Anni Valkonen can be heard more often with her very soulful singing compared to the previous album. I think this approach is good, because it results in dreamlike compositions and soundscapes. The growls of singer Ville Rutanen are really intense. No idea from which depths of his soul the growling bear gets the tones out, but that is extreme. Very dark and voluminous the growls gurgle out and do not miss their effect. The growls are the darkest element in the sound of RED MOON ARCHITECT. So that you know what I’m writing about, check out the video of the song „Chained“. It’s the only song that does without female vocals.

In my opinion the growls are primarily an additional sound component of RED MOON ARCHITECT. Here it is more about creating certain moods, which works really well. The comprehensibility of the lyrics is neglected. In the long run, I think a certain monotony would develop, but this is skilfully prevented by the interaction with Annis singing. Even more… This contrasting vocal image between the very distinctive growls and the female clean vocals is perfectly realised here and creates fantastic listening experiences. The song „Rise“, for example, shows this very clearly.

Result

RED MOON ARCHITECT create a beguilingly beautiful work of art of melancholy that will touch your souls. They rely on the meanwhile very often used contrast programme with male and female vocals. Excessively dark growls are accompanied by fantastic melodies and contrast impressively with the soulful female vocals. Everything melts together with the endless harmonic instrumentation. As highlights I also clearly see the sequences in which Anni and Ville act together and both voices sound simultaneously. This creates a special feeling and gets under your skin.
