ESCAPE FROM WONDERLAND (Facebook) kommen aus Stuttgart und können auf ihrem Debüt „Pieces“ mit beeindruckendem Metalcore begeistern. In knackigen 36 Minuten bekommt man richtig was auf die Ohren geknallt.

Schon nach den ersten Minuten wird schnell klar, dass man es hier mit einer höchst professionellen Geschichte zu tun hat, die absolut hochwertig in Szene gesetzt wird; sowohl musikalisch als auch visuell. Der Mix zwischen brutalen Angriffen und melodischen gesungenen Refrains ist natürlich nicht neu, aber immer noch sehr angesagt. Und auch bei mir rennt man damit offene Türen ein, wenn es so toll umgesetzt wird wie bei ESCAPE FROM WONDERLAND. Da braucht man sich vor großen Namen in dem Business gar nicht verstecken.

Super stark!

Der Opener „Beyond Life“ baut die Spannung langsam auf, um sich dann energisch zu entladen. Die extremen Vocals von Sänger Dennis haben es in sich und hauen richtig auf den Putz. Die cleanen Vocals von Lars kommen ebenfalls super rüber und auch im Gleichklang mit den extremen Growls klingt das hervorragend. Die Melodien sind eingängig, aber zugleich kraftvoll. Instrumental lässt man ebenfalls die Muskeln spielen und erschafft einen atmosphärisch dichten Song. Ein tolles Gitarrensolo hätte ich hier bei diesem Genre gar nicht erwartet. Eine schöne Überraschung!

Wahnsinniges Potential

Positiv anzumerken ist jedenfalls, dass die Band sich genügend einfallen lässt, um den Songs jeweils einen eigenen Anstrich zu verpassen, so dass das gesamte Repertoir nicht austauschbar wirkt. Man legt auch wert darauf, dass gerade bei den extremen Vocals viel passiert. Sänger Dennis probiert sich da gerne aus und das tut dem Sound unheimlich gut.

Apropos unheimlich… „Eyes Wide Shut“ ist ein düsteres Monster, dass mit krassen Bassschwingungen aufschlägt und mit erschütternden Breakdowns die Erde zum erzittern bringt. Hier finde ich es passend, dass man auf cleane Vocals verzichtet hat und so der finstere Grundgedanke des Songs erhalten bleibt.

Als Gegenbeispiel zu „Eyes Wide Shut“ sei „Blinding Lights“ genannt, wo die cleanen Vocals den Hauptpart übernehmen, aber die extremen Vocals geschickt im Hintergrund agieren und lediglich in einer kürzeren Sequenz dominieren. Dieser Song als Schlusstrack ist wohl der „fröhlichste“ Song auf dem Album. Er geht schön flott voran ist ziemlich eingängig rockig arrangiert. Gefällt mir auch sehr sehr gut.

Es zeigt sich also, dass ESCAPE FROM WONDERLAND nicht immer nach dem gleichen Schema vorgehen und die Dosierung der unterschiedlichen Gesangsformen variabel eingesetzt wird. Dies unterstreicht die Vielseitigkeit der Band.

Ebenso ist mir „Sulfur“ besonders aufgefallen, der ganz anders aufgebaut ist, aber nicht weniger imposant. Dieser Song zeigt sich zunächst mit bedächtiger Atmosphäre und ruhigem Gesang, entfaltet sich sich dann aber zwischendurch kraftvoll zu einem mächtigen Konstrukt. Und dann kommt dieser Part ab Minute 02:40, der gnadenlos reinhaut, um dann wieder in eine ruhige atmosphärische Phase hineinzugleiten, an die sich ein kleines aber feines Gitarrensolo anschließt.

Das Video zu „Dissumulate“ möchte ich euch nicht vorenthalten. Denn auch dieses ist cool umgesetzt und der Song unterstreicht die hohe Qualität der Band.

Fazit

ESCAPE FROM WONDERLAND haben mit „Pieces“ ein verdammt ausgereiftes Debüt an den Start gebracht, dass sich vor den großen Bands in dem Genre sicherlich nicht verstecken muss. Denn ESCAPE FROM WONDERLAND schmettern Metalcore, der hervorragend inszeniert ist und ein gewaltiges Potential offenbart. Wer auf einen modernen atmosphärischen Mix mit brutalen Angriffen und wunderbaren melodisch emotionalen Momenten steht, kommt an der Band nicht vorbei.

ESCAPE FROM WONDERLAND (Facebook) come from Germany and impress with their damn strong metalcore debut „Pieces“. In a crisp 36 minutes, you really get something on your ears.

After the first few minutes, it quickly becomes clear that you are dealing with a highly professional production that is staged to an absolutely high standard, both musically and visually. The mix of brutal attacks and melodic, sung choruses is of course nothing new, but it is still very popular. And when it’s done as well as ESCAPE FROM WONDERLAND, it opens doors for me too. There’s no need to hide from the big names in this business.

Damn strong!

The opener „Beyond Life“ slowly builds up the tension and then unloads energetically. The extreme vocals of singer Dennis are really something and really hit the spot. Lars‘ clean vocals also come across really well and sound excellent in unison with the extreme growls. The melodies are catchy but also powerful. Instrumentally, they also flex their muscles and create an atmospherically dense song. I wouldn’t have expected a great guitar solo in this genre. A nice surprise!

Great potential

On a positive note, the band have come up with enough ideas to give the songs their own individual touch, so that the entire repertoire doesn’t seem interchangeable. It is also important that a lot happens, especially with the extreme vocals. Singer Dennis likes to try things out and that enriches the whole sound.

„Eyes Wide Shut“ is a dark monster that strikes with blatant bass vibrations and makes the earth tremble with shattering breakdowns. I think it’s fitting that no clean vocals are used here, so that the dark basic idea of the song is retained.

A counter-example to „Eyes Wide Shut“ is „Blinding Lights“, where the clean vocals take over the main part, but the extreme vocals skillfully act in the background and only dominate in a shorter sequence. This song as the closing track is probably the most „cheerful“ song on the album. It moves along nicely and is arranged in a catchy rock style. I also like it very much.

This shows that ESCAPE FROM WONDERLAND do not always follow the same pattern and that the dosage of the different vocal forms is used variably. This underlines the band’s versatility.

I’m also struck by „Sulfur“, which has a completely different concept, but is no less impressive. This song begins with a deliberate atmosphere and calm vocals, but then unfolds powerfully into a mighty banger. And then there is this part from minute 02:40 onwards, which mercilessly kicks in, only to slide back into a calm, atmospheric phase, which is followed by a small but fine guitar solo.

I don’t want to withhold the video for „Dissumulate“ from you. It’s also cool and the song underlines the high quality of the band.

Conclusion

With „Pieces“, ESCAPE FROM WONDERLAND have released a damn mature debut that certainly doesn’t have to hide from the big bands in the genre. ESCAPE FROM WONDERLAND bang metalcore that is superbly produced and reveals enormous potential. If you like a modern atmospheric mix with brutal attacks and wonderful melodic and emotional moments, you can’t miss this band.
