MH: Auf den ersten Blick scheint es eher ungewöhnlich, dass Ihr beim Platzhirsch-Festival in Duisburg gespielt habt. Wie kam es zu dem Kontakt?

Guillaume (G): Wir haben kürzlich beim Moers Festival 2023 gespielt, auch mit einem anderen Projekt namens ZAÄAR, das viele Mitglieder von Neptunian Maximalism zusammenbringt und von Sebastien, Renés Bruder, organisiert wird, der das Platzhirsch Festival organisiert. Ich schätze, sie hatten einen guten Plan, wenn Du weißt, was ich meine, haha (lacht). Ich denke auch, dass eine unserer wichtigen Komponenten das Baritonsaxophon war, das eine klare spirituelle Konnotation von Free Jazz hat, was angesichts des Programms durchaus Sinn machen kann.

Doch vor 3 Wochen haben wir uns gemeinsam auf eine Auszeit mit JJ, unserem Saxophonisten, der Zeit für sich und seine Familie braucht, geeinigt. Tatsächlich haben wir in Rekordzeit ein neues Set zusammengestellt, das auf der indischen Musik basiert, die ich spiele, genauer gesagt auf Raag Todi und Raag Bairagi. Ohne Saxophon klingt es also etwas mehr nach Metal und wirkt auf dem Platzhirsch-Festival vielleicht seltsam. Auf jeden Fall haben wir, genau wie die Moers, den außergewöhnlichen Empfang und die gute Atmosphäre vor Ort sehr geschätzt (lächelt).

Platzhirsch-Festival in Duisburg: Artenvielfalt im übertragenen Sinne

MH: Das Festival will Artenvielfalt im übertragenen Sinne fördern. Metaphorisch gemeint ist damit ein Biotop, und zwar musikalisch, künstlerisch, gesellschaftlich, ethnisch, der sexuellen Orientierung nach und so weiter. Was bedeutet das für Euch, auf so einem Festival zu spielen? Wie schlägt sich so ein Umfeld auf Euch und Eure Musik nieder?

G: Ich wusste nicht, dass es für das Festival Platzhirsch eine politisch-gesellschaftliche Haltung gibt, aber es freut mich sehr, davon zu hören. Die politische Positionierung ist für mich und als Kollektiv äußerst wichtig. Ich teile diese Überzeugungen und bestehe darauf, dass sie eingefordert werden müssen. Politik ist in ihrer öffentlichen Dimension untrennbar mit Kunst verbunden. Es ist eine Tatsache. Wie Joseph Beuys schon sagte, ist jeder künstlerische Akt politisch.

MH: Habt Ihr als Künstler die besondere Atmosphäre dieses Festivals gespürt? Wie hat das Publikum mit Euch resoniert?

G: Wir haben eine friedliche, respektvolle und freundliche Atmosphäre gespürt und positives Feedback erhalten. Ich hoffe aufrichtig, dass es auf jeden Fall allen gefallen hat, denn wir haben die Lautstärke der Verstärker ein wenig überstrapaziert, denke ich, haha (lacht) – ja, denn jetzt, wo das Saxofon nicht mehr da ist, gibt es keine Grenzen mehr!

MH: Auf Eurem Instagram-Account kann man sehen, dass Ihr alle leidenschaftliche Sammler alter Verstärker und Instrumente sind. Wie wichtig sind diese Geräte für Euren Sound?

G: Für mich sind analoge Vintage-Röhrenverstärker Instrumente für sich und sie reagieren wirklich organisch, wie alle Instrumente, aber nicht wie numerische Geräte, die völlig vorhersehbar sind. Ich liebe den Dialog mit diesen Aggregaten. Außerdem gibt es meiner Meinung nach kein Äquivalent zu echten Verstärkern. Die echten Amps sind wahre Blütenkelche. Die Reaktion in jeder Frequenz ist ungeheuerlich. Und ich liebe diese alten Dinge, gut gebaut, stärker als alles andere, nachhaltig und mit einer richtigen Geschichte. Meine Babys. (lächelt)

Neptunian Maximalism live in Duisburg: Neptunian Maximalism (also written as NNMM) is a Belgian collective working in the fields of drone metal, free jazz and psychedelic music. The band rocked the Platzhirsch Festival in downtown Duisburg on August 26, 2023. Powerful and loud – and sometimes quiet and introspective. An unusual setting at the Platzhirsch Festival? Band founder Guillaume Cazalet explains the background in an interview.

MH: At first glance it seems rather unusual that you played at the Platzhirsch Festival in Duisburg. How did the contact come about? 

Guillaume (G): We recently played at the Moers Festival 2023, also with another project that brings together many members of Neptunian Maximalism called ZAÄAR, organized by Sebastien, René’s brother who organizes the Platzhirsch Festival. Guess they must have had some good plans if you know what I mean haha (laughs). I also think that one of our important components was the baritone saxophone which has a clear siritual connotation of free jazz, which can make sense given the prog.

But 3 weeks ago we jointly agreed on a break with JJ, our saxophonist who needs time for himself and his family. In fact, we put together a new set in record time, based on the Indian music that I play, more specifically Raag Todi and Raag Bairagi. So without the saxophone, it sounds a bit more metal and may seem strange at the Platzhirsch Festival. In any case we appreciated, just like the Moers, without counting the remarkable welcome and the good local atmosphere (smiles).

Platzhirsch Festival in Duisburg: Diversity of species in a figurative sense

MH: The festival wants to promote biodiversity in a figurative sense. What we mean metaphorically is a biotope, namely musically, artistically, socially, ethnically, according to sexual orientation, etc. What does it mean for you to play in a festival like this? How does such an environment affect you and your music?

G: I didn’t know that there was a politico-social posture for the Festival Platzhirsch, but I’m very happy to hear about it. Political positioning is extremely important to me, and as a collective. I share these convictions and I insist on the fact that they must be claimed. Politics is inseparable from art in its public dimension. It is a fact. As Joseph Beuys suggested, every artistic act is political.

MH: As artists, did you feel the particular atmosphere of this festival? How did the public resonate with you?

G: We felt a peaceful, respectful and friendly atmosphere, and we had positive feedback. I sincerely hope that everyone enjoyed it in any case because we have a little abused the volume of the amps I think haha (laughs) – yes because now that the sax is no longer there, it’s no limit!

MH: On your Instagram account you can see that you are all passionate collectors of old amps and instruments. How essential are these devices to your sound?

For me, analog vintage tube amps are instruments in itself and they react really organically, like every instruments, but not like numeric devices that are totally predictable. I love to dialog with those power units. Also there no equivalent with actual amps in my point of view. Those clean like amp are true calyx. The response in every frequency are monstrous. And I love those old things, well built, strong than anything, sustainable, with a proper history. My babies. (smiles)

MH: Dass Ihr auf dem Platzhirsch-Festival in Duisburg gespielt habt, ist auf den ersten Blick ja eher ungewöhnlich. Wie kam der Kontakt zustande?

AB: Wir wurden von einem der Platzhirsch-Festival-Programmverantwortlichen, René Schwenk, eingeladen, den wir aus der Ruhrgebiets-Drohnen-/Ambient-Szene und dem Duisburger Veranstaltungsort Djäzz kannten, wo wir in der Vergangenheit schon einige Male gespielt haben. Wir schienen zwar ein wenig außerhalb des regulären Programms des Festivals zu stehen, aber die musikalische Vielfalt in einem Festivalprogramm macht es sicherlich viel interessanter, als wenn alle Bands gleich klingen würden.

AB: Es ist interessant, sich Biodiversität oder ein Biotop als etwas mehr als nur ein Naturphänomen vorzustellen, sondern als etwas, an dessen Schaffung Menschen arbeiten und dabei Ideen von Inklusivität, Kreativität und Vielfalt zusammenbringen, um eine fortschrittliche Gemeinschaft als Alternative zum Mainstream oder Status Quo zu schaffen. Dies ist für uns als Band und als Menschen auf jeden Fall wichtig und besonders relevant für die Art und Weise, wie wir an der Etablierung unserer musikalischen und kreativen Karriere und unserer Do-it-yourself-, grassroots- und gemeinschaftsorientierten Arbeitsweise gearbeitet haben.

Nadja live in Duisburg: Konzert in einer Kirche

MH: Ihr habt auf dem Platzhirsch-Festival in einer Kirche in der Mitte des Publikums gespielt. Die Gäste saßen im Kreis um Euch herum. Das ist sicherlich keine alltägliche Location für Euch. Wie habt Ihr das Wechselspiel von Klang und Raum empfunden?

AB: Tatsächlich haben wir schon mehrfach in Kirchen gespielt, zum Beispiel in der Kristuskirche in Bochum, bei mehreren Ausgaben des Moving Noises Festivals. Je nachdem, welche Art von Material wir spielen – wie zum Beispiel unsere Komposition „Sv“, die wir in Duisburg aufgeführt haben, eines unserer eher ambienten/experimentellen Werke – können Kirchen oder Galerieräume durchaus passend sein. Denn sie haben da sie eine natürliche Resonanz und ermöglichen einen meditativeren Eindruck – ein immersives Erlebnis für das Publikum. Einige unserer anderen Alben sind strukturierter und song-orientierter, daher fühlt es sich angemessener an, sie in einem Club zu spielen, aber wir versuchen dennoch, auch dort ein immersives Erlebnis zu schaffen.

MH: Spürt man als Künstler die besondere Atmosphäre dieses Festivals? Wie hat das Publikum mit Euch resoniert?

AB: Wir bekamen viel positives Feedback vom Publikum, viele davon waren Fans und hatten uns schon einmal in der Gegend spielen sehen – aber einige waren neu in unserer Musik. Es war schön, ein Festival mit einem aufgeschlossenen Publikum zu spielen, das daran interessiert ist, neue Musik zu entdecken.

AB: We were invited by one of the Platzhirsch Festival programmers, René Schwenk, who we knew from the Ruhrgebiet drone/ambient scene and the Duisburg venue, Djäzz, which we have played a few times in the past. We did seem to be a little outside the regular programming of the festival, but certainly musical diversity in a festival program makes it that much more interesting than if all the bands sound alike.

What is meant metaphorically is a biotope, namely musically, artistically, socially, ethnically, according to sexual orientation and so on. What does it mean for you to play at a festival like this? How does such an environment affect you and your music?

AB: It is interesting to think of biodiversity or a biotope as something more than just a natural phenomena, but something that people work to create, bringing together ideas of inclusivity and creativity and diversity to create a progressive community as an alternative to the mainstream or status quo. This is definitely important to us, as a band and as people, and particularly relevant to how we have worked to established our musical/creative career and our DIY/grassroots/community-oriented methods of operating. 

Nadja: concert in a church

MH: You played at the Platzhirsch festival in a church in the middle of the audience. The guests sat in a circle around you. This is certainly not an everyday location for you. How did you experience the interplay of sound and space?

AB: Actually, we have played several times in churches—the Kristuskirche in Bochum, for example, for several editions of the Moving Noises Festival. Depending on what kind of material we play—like our composition „Sv“ which we performed in Duisburg, one of our more ambient/experimental works—churches or gallery spaces can be quite fitting, as they have a natural resonance and allow a more meditative, immersive experience for the audience. Some of our other albums are more structured and song-oriented, so playing those does feel more appropriate in a club, but still we attempt to create an immersive experience there as well.

MH: As an artist, did you feel the special atmosphere of this festival? How did the audience resonate with you?

AB: We had a lot of positive feedback from the audience, many of whom were fans and had already seen us play in the area before—but several were new to our music. It was nice to play a festival with an open-minded audience who are interested in discovering new music.
