Viele Bands haben in der coronabedingt konzertfreien Zeit Streamingkonzerte gegeben. Im November 2020 haben Tesseract auch einen Auftritt im Studio hingelegt. Hierbei haben sie die Portals – A Live Cinematic Experience geschaffen, „to offer a escape in a time of isolation“. Ein Gesamtkunstwerk, in der der visuelle Inhalt mit dem Audio quasi eine Einheit bildet.

Tesseract – Portals wird als 2 CD, Triple Vinyl im Gatefold, BluRay, digital und als Limited Edition 4 Disk Book Set erhältlich sein. Hier ist für jeden etwas dabei.

Portals

Der Soundtrack allein ist schon wahnsinnig gut. Die Setlist umspannt das gesamte Werk von Tesseract. Von jedem Album sind Songs vertreten. Der Sound ist bombastisch. Jedes Instrument ist perfekt abgemischt. Da natürlich keine Zuschauer zu hören sind, klingt das ganze wie eine Studioaufnahme. Wer jedoch die Stücke gut kennt, wird hier und da natürlich einen kleinen Unterschied im Arrangement und Gesang hören. Ich habe selten so einen fetten Livesound gehört. Sänger Daniel Tompkins ist wieder mit an Bord. Natürlich erkennt man den Unterschied zwischen ihm und Ashe O’Hara bei den Songs von „Altered State“. Sänger Daniel Tompkins hat eine facettenreiche Stimme. Meistens sehr melodisch emotional, aber auch mal mit mehr Power und einer Priese Growl.

Drummer Jay Postone konnte aus verschiedenen Gründen leider nicht zum Streamingevent nach Großbritannien reisen. Für die Aufnahmen zu Portals saß dann ein langjähriger Freund der Band hinter dem Schlagzeug. Mike Malyan. Da kann ich auch nur von absoluter Perfektion reden. Was Malyan da abfeuert ist Spitzenklasse, vor allem wenn man bedenkt, dass er nur als Aushilfe eingesprungen ist. Was die komplette Band hier abliefert, ist Prog vom Allerfeinsten.

Vision

Das Video verstärkt den Auftritt noch um einiges. Es wird viel mit Lasern und Licht gearbeitet. Auch Leinwandszenen kommen zum Einsatz. Wer sich die Zeit nimmt, kann vollkommen in Portals versinken. Es gibt auch eine Kameraperspektive, die eine Draufsicht auf das Schlagzeug bietet. Das sieht klasse aus und man kann Mike Malyan bei der Arbeit zusehen.

Fazit

Tesseract haben die Messlatte für Streaming-Gigs verdammt hoch gelegt. Bild und Ton sind meiner Meinung nach nur schwer besser zu machen. Dass es sich hier um eine „cineastische Erfahrung“ handelt, ist keineswegs zu hoch gegriffen. Das macht schon verdammt viel Freude.

Wer sich jetzt angesprochen fühlt, kann ja mal einen Blick in die bereits veröffentlichten Songs auf Youtube werfen. Viel Spaß.

„Nocturne (P O R T A L S)“

In December 2020, TesseracT invited fans to join them in P O R T A L S – an ambitious concept created to offer an escape in a time of isolation. The live cinematic experience fused live performance with beautiful lighting and striking effects, brought together by chaptered screenplay. By taking their most daring steps as a creative force, the band offered the viewer a completely new and unique experience.

The show was a phenomenal success and garnered praise from fans and media worldwide after the band performed 14 songs spanning their entire catalogue in a performance that lasted over 2 hours, with one of the highlights being the track “Nocturne“.

Bass player Amos Williams

Nocturne has been a firm fan and band favourite since it was released ahead of the ‘Altered State’ album cycle. As such, we threw a lot into the performance, which was matched by our production team, who really pushed the envelope with what they achieved during this track. The laser effects and lighting is powerful and emotive, and Rich’s cinematography really hits the mark.

Every tour produces a slightly different version of this track, as our mindset waxes and wanes, but this version of Nocturne is a real high mark for us we feel; it was just so much fun to perform after not performing it for a year. So, why didn’t we close the show with this song if it was so fun? The thought did cross our minds, we figured everybody would want that. But,  we wanted to sit outside our comfort zone with an ‚encore‘ of real deep cuts and fan favourites. Thus, Nocturne (P O R T A L S) was the perfect handover between the desired and expected, as well as an excellent guide for everyone as we turned to face the weird and wonderful direction of the final act. “

Kscope will present this unique event to a wider audience for the first time. The film and soundtrack will be issued on an array of formats including Blu-Ray, Triple LP soundtrack and as a limited edition deluxe 4 disc book edition on 27 August 2021.
