from Germany! Two brothers, Rouven (guitar/vocals) and Marlin Constantin (drums), from Oranienburg near Berlin had dedicated themselves to metal music and founded their own band BRUTAL KRAUT in 2012. (Facebook )They were joined by Henry Ludwig on bass and Lukas Ludwig as the second guitarist. Unfortunately Lukas left the band in 2019 and they continued as a trio. Before that they released an EP in 2015 and the self-titled debut album in 2018 and got a lot of positive feedback. In 2019 they played at the Riedfest-Open-Air and toured with the Death-Metallers THORNAFIRE from Chile. And with a lot of motivation and ambitions they now bring their latest work „Progression In Madness“ to the metal market, which is available since 11/13/2020.

Attack of the killer tomatoes

is a very special and funny film from 1978 in which intelligent malicious tomatoes spread fear and terror after fleeing an American experimental laboratory. (A very elaborately produced film that you have to see ) Here the trailer….

I don’t know if the brothers oriented themselves on this vegetable film when they chose the band name BRUTAL KRAUT. Maybe it also has something to do with the nickname „Krauts“, which the Germans were given by the Americans in the past. It would be very interesting to know how they came up with this name. But now I’d rather talk about the new album „Progression In Madness“, which was released on 13.11.2020 under the label Boersma Records.

BRUTAL KRAUT

basically play Death-Metal, but to reduce them only to that would be too easy and would not do them justice. Death-Metal with a good Thrash impact including a progressive vein would be more appropriate, because the guys sometimes have cool stuff in their songs.

Already the opener „Broken“ proves what the guys have up their sleeve. They don’t beat around the bush for long, but they go straight to the point. Brutal hard riffs with horny leads are fired by powerful drums. Rouven roars angry and aggressive. Speed changes and blastbeats belong to the good tone. In between the song is pushing like a thrash locomotive under full steam through the ears. The polyphonic chorus comes across well. The instrumental solo part is bizarrely introduced and is an example of how to do it off the beaten track. This is mindblowing.

Full speed ahead

is a motto of BRUTAL KRAUT, which lets the massive aggressive sound-locomotive push forward with a red-hot boiler every now and then. So „All I See“ also makes a lot of steam in between.

In the very impetuous wild sound there are always passages in some songs that one would not expect. But instead of wondering, „What’s that all about?“, you think, „Hey! That’s kind of really cool! I had this feeling not only with the opener „Broken“ but also with the track „Perceive The Insanity“, which features a calm, casual clean sung passage, followed by a nice solo, only to take the bow again to massive death metal.

Furthermore there is the title song „Progression In Madness“, which in the course of the instrumental part first goes off with a portion of wild leads and then finally drifts off into a downright chilly part until it is again bludgeoned to attack furiously and aggressively.

Result

From the cover artwork it can already be deduced that the musical dish is served here raw and bloody. The music has nothing to do with lax tasteless vegetables. BRUTAL KRAUT is crunchy and has a real bite. The quality is consistently high and the guys are smashing mercilessly at the listener. The songs live partly also from creative unusual surprise moments. I would have wished for even more of these moments. But also the straighter songs are very appealing and offer best entertainment of the brute kind. We will surely get to hear damn good albums from the guys in the future.

Angriff der Killertomaten

ist ein Kultfilm aus dem Jahre 1978, in dem intelligente bösartige Tomaten nach der Flucht aus einem amerikanischen Versuchslabor Angst und Schrecken verbreiten. (Ein sehr aufwendig produzierter Film, den man gesehen haben muss ) Hier der Trailer….

Ich weiß nicht, ob sich die Brüder an diesem Gemüsefilm orientiert haben, als sie sich den Bandnamen BRUTAL KRAUT ausgesucht hatten. Vielleicht hat es auch etwas mit dem Spitznamen „Krauts“ zu tun, den die Deutschen irgendwann mal von den Amis verpasst bekommen haben. Das wäre schon sehr interessant zu wissen, wie man auf diesen Namen gekommen ist. Aber jetzt möchte ich mal auf das neue Album „Progression In Madness“ eingehen, welches am 13.11.2020 unter dem Label Boersma Records erschienen ist.

BRUTAL KRAUT

spielen grundsätzlich Death-Metal, aber sie nur darauf zu reduzieren, wäre zu einfach und würde ihnen nicht gerecht werden. Death-Metal mit gehörigem Thrash-Einschlag inklusive einer progressiven Ader würde es schon eher treffen, denn die Jungs haben mitunter coole Überraschungen in ihren Songs zu bieten.

Schon der Opener „Broken“ beweist, was die Jungs auf dem Kasten haben. Es wird nicht lange um den heißen Brei gespielt, sondern es geht direkt knallhart zur Sache. Brutalharte Riffs mit geilen Leads werden von druckvollen Drums befeuert. Rouven röhrt standesgemäß wütend und aggressiv die Texte ins Micro. Tempiwechsel und Blastbeats gehören quasi zum guten Ton. Der Song prescht zwischendurch wie eine Thrash-Lokomotive unter Volldampf durch die Ohren. Der mehrstimmige Chorus kommt ebenfalls gut zur Geltung. Der instrumentale Soloteil wird skurill eingeleitet und ist ein Beispiel dafür, wie man es mal abseits vom Standard macht. Geiles Ding!

Vollgas voraus

ist immer wieder ein Motto von BRUTAL KRAUT, welches den wuchtigen aggressiven Sound immer mal wieder mit glühendem Heizkessel nach vorne preschen lässt. So macht auch „All I See“ zwischendurch mächtig Dampf.

In dem sehr ungestümen wilden Sound finden sich immer wieder Passagen in manchen Songs, die man nicht erwarten würde. Aber anstatt sich zu fragen,-„Was soll das denn jetzt?“-, denkt man sich,-„Hey! Das ist irgendwie echt cool!“-. Dieses Gefühl hatte ich neben dem Opener „Broken“ auch bei dem Track „Perceive The Insanity“, der mit einer ruhigen, lässigen clean gesungenen Passage aufwartet, an die sich ein geiles Solo anschließt, um dann wieder den Bogen zu wuchtigen Death-Metal zu schlagen.

Ferner wäre da noch der Titelsong „Progression In Madness“, der im Verlauf des instrumentalen Parts zunächst mit einer Portion wilden Leads abgeht und dann schließlich in einen geradezu chilligen Teil abdriftet, bis wieder wütend und aggressiv zum Angriff geknüppelt wird.

Fazit

Vom Coverartwork lässt sich schon ableiten, dass das musikalische Gericht hier roh und blutig serviert wird. Mit laschem geschmacklosen Gemüse hat die Musik nix zu tun. BRUTAL KRAUT ist knackig und hat richtig Biss. Die Qualität ist durchweg hoch und die Jungs schmettern dem Hörer gnadenlos entgegen. Die Songs leben zum Teil auch von kreativen ungewöhnlichen Überraschungsmomenten. Von diesen Momenten hätte ich mir noch mehr gewünscht. Aber auch die straighteren Songs sind sehr ansprechend und bieten beste Unterhaltung der brachialen Art. Von den Jungs werden wir zukünftig mit Sicherheit noch verdammt gute Kost serviert bekommen.
