MOONSPELL (Facebook ) haben mich seit 1995 begleitet, als sie mit Ihrem Durchbruch mit dem Debütalbum „Wolfheart“ hatten. 26 Jahre später nun Album Nr. 13 „Hermitage“.

Veränderungen

sind im Laufe der Zeit unausweichlich. Auf dem 2015´er Album „Extinct“ gab es eingängigen ungehobelten, mit teils schönen eingängigen Melodien, verwobenen Dark Metal auf die Ohren, was mir sehr gut gefallen hat. Der Nachfolger „1755“ aus dem Jahre 2017 ging in eine noch härtere Richtung und hatte eine bis dato noch nie dagewesene symphonische theatralische Ausstrahlung, die in Sachen Härte noch ne Schippe drauflegte. Das Material war schwerer und düsterer und auch nicht so leicht zugänglich, denn die Song waren ziemlich vollgepackt.

Das neue Album „Hermitage“

wird am 26.02.2021 das Licht der Welt erblicken. So viel sei gesagt: MOONSPELL haben einen neuen Weg eingeschlagen. Mit dem Sound der alten Alben, insbesondere im Vergleich zum letzten Album, hat das nicht mehr viel zu tun. MOONSPELL drehen sich um 180 Grad und entschleunigen sich und die Hörerschaft mit dem insgesamt ruhigeren Album „Hermitage“. MOONSPELL sind eine alte und gestandene Größe im Metal-Geschäft. Pink Floyd

wohl nie mit dem Sound von MOONSPELL in Verbindung gebracht. Und so dachte ich bei den ersten Klängen des Openers „The Greater Good“, dass ich aus Versehen eine falsche Scheibe erwischt hätte. Sehr ruhig, ja fast sanft und zurückhaltend ertönen die ersten zwei Minuten und der Song bleibt zunächst sphärisch und zurückhaltend, bis er in den letzten 90 Sekunden an Kraft gewinnt. Das Riffing tritt mehr in den Vordergrund und Fernando Ribeiro verlässt die cleane melodische Ebene und wechselt in den aggressiven Shouting-Modus. Eine coole Nummer!

Zu Stärke und Kraft

aus vergangenen Tagen gelangen MOONSPELL allerdings nicht allzu häufig. Die Ansätze sind da, aber irgendwie bremsen sich MOONSPELL immer wieder aus und bewegen sich bewusst in ruhigeren Gewässern. „Common Prayers“ trumpft mit einem dominanten Bass auf. Das Riffing tritt stellenweise in den Hintergrund und melodische Synthies bestimmen das Geschehen. Dann ertönt wieder zum Ende hin der stimmliche Ausbruch und fertig.

Entschleunigung

Der Song „All Or Nothing“ klingt, und das ist jetzt keine große Überraschung, ebenfalls sehr gemäßigt. Lieblicher Gesang wird zunächst von einer Akustikgitarre begleitet. Aber ich muss zugeben, dass mir der Einsatz mit der bluesigen E-Gitarre gut gefällt. Das bringt ein wenig Kante und Coolness in die liebliche Erscheinung dieser melancholischen Ballade. Das glasklare Gitarrensolo im Mittelteil und am Ende bietet ebenfalls genüssliche Momente.

„Hermitage“

als Titelsong lässt mich dann doch aufhorchen. Es passiert mal was und der Song zeigt dann doch endlich, dass MOONSPELL den alten Tugenden nicht ganz abgeschworen haben. Der Song hat eine starke Präsenz und mächtige Ausstrahlung. Die Drums schlagen ordentlich durch und es wird erheblich gitarrenlastiger. Der Gesang tritt deutlich energischer auf.

Vollbremsung

„Entitlement“ umgarnt den Hörer dann wieder mit tollen schmeichelnden lieblichen Sangesmelodien auf einer Wolke von melodisch erklingenden Instrumenten. Bei Minute 03:43 fühlte ich mich auf einen härteren Verlauf des Songs vorbereitet, aber diese Erwartung wird mit einem plötzlichen brutalen Break nicht erfüllt. Diese Vollbremsung ist mir zu hart, auch wenn im weiteren Verlauf ein langes super gespieltes Gitarrensolo Freude bereitet.

„The Hermit Saints“ bietet gesanglich Abwechslung und überrascht neben den harschen Vocals von Fernando mit ungewohntem mehrstimmigem Chorus, der zu gefallen weiß. Eine bombastische Nummer mit rockiger Attitüde und epischem Charakter. Eine tolle Nummer.

Fazit

MOONSPELL verlassen mit „Hermitage“ die raue See und schippern nun in ruhigeren Gewässern. Zwar sind einige Stromschnellen vorhanden, aber schlussendlich bleibt festzuhalten, dass die Songs filigraner und fragiler geworden sind. Technisch ist alles perfekt umgesetzt und die Produktion ist über jeden Zweifel erhaben. Ich kann mich mit dem Ergebnis allerdings nicht in allen Belangen so richtig anfreunden, weil mir das Album insgesamt zu ruhig und unspektakulär ausgefallen ist, auch wenn raffinierte Momente und Songs vorhanden sind. Die kraftvollen Ansätze bzw. Momente, bei denen sich der Sound mal aufbäumt, sind mir zu präsent. Aber es ist kein schlechtes Album geworden, nur anders. Und ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass manche Fans dem zwar nicht so viel abgewinnen können, aber MOONSPELL mit diesem Album dafür neue Fans hinzugewinnen.

Changes

Pink Floyd

probably never associated with the sound of MOONSPELL. And so I thought at the first sounds of the opener „The Greater Good“ that I had accidentally caught a wrong disc. Very quiet, almost gentle and restrained sound the first two minutes and the song initially remains spherical and restrained, until the last 90 seconds initially the song gains strength. The riffing comes more to the fore and Fernando Ribeiro leaves the clean melodic level and switches to aggressive shouting mode. A cool number!

Strength and power

Power and strength of the past will not be found here. The beginnings are there, but somehow MOONSPELL brake themselves out again and again and move consciously in calmer waters. „Common Prayers“ trumps with a dominant bass. The guitar riffing steps sometimes in the background and melodic synths determine the events. Then the vocal outburst sounds again towards the end and finished.

Reflection

The song „All Or Nothing“ is, and this is no big surprise now, also very moderate. Lovely vocals are initially accompanied by an acoustic guitar. But I must admit that I like the use with the bluesy electric guitar.It brings a little edge and coolness to the lovely appearance of this melancholic ballad. The crystal clear guitar solo in the middle section and at the end also provides enjoyable moments.

„Hermitage“

as the title track makes me sit up and take notice. Something happens and the song finally shows that MOONSPELL have not completely sworn off the old virtues. The song has a strong presence and powerful charisma. The drums hit properly through and it is considerably more guitar-heavy. The vocals appear much more energetic.

Slowed down

„Entitlement“ then ensnares the listener again with great flattering lovely vocal melodies on a cloud of melodic sounding instruments. At minute 03:43 I felt prepared for a harder progression of the song, but this expectation is not met with a sudden brutal break. This full brake is too hard for me, even if in the further course long a super played guitar solo gives pleasure.

„The Hermit Saints“ offers vocal variety and surprises next to the harsh vocals of Fernando with unusual polyphonic chorus, which knows how to please. A bombastic number with rock attitude and epic character. A great song!

Result

MOONSPELL leave the rough sea with „Hermitage“ and now sail in calmer waters. Although there are some rapids, but ultimately it remains to be said that the songs have become more delicate and fragile. Technically, everything is perfectly implemented and the production is beyond reproach. However, I can not really get along with the result in all areas, because for me the album has turned out altogether too quiet and unspectacular, even if refined moments and songs are present. The powerful beginnings or moments when the sound sometimes rears up are not present enough for me. But it has not become a bad album, just different. And I could imagine that some fans may not like it so much, but MOONSPELL win new fans with this album for it.
