HALLS OF OBLIVION aus Stuttgart hatten 2019 mit „Endtime Poetry“ (Bandcamp )ein fantastisches Album herausgebracht, dass ich nur jedem Black-Metal-Fan wärmstens ans Herz legen kann. Ein fesselndes Album mit einem breiten Spektrum von ansprechenden Melodien und tollen Songstrukturen, die auch mal ins ruhige träumerische Gefilde abdriften. All dies wird auf technisch hohem Niveau gespielt.

Nun gibt es endlich Nachschub in Form der EP „… of hate and despair“ ( VÖ 05.02.2021, Bandcamp ), die uns immerhin 25 Minuten mit vier Songs in die Dunkelwelt entführt. Hören wir mal, was HALLS OF OBLIVION für schwarze Schätze offenbaren. Eine Überraschung gibt es auf jeden Fall.

Hohes Niveau

HALLS OF OBLIVION bleiben ihrem Motto treu, und das auf gewohnt hohem Niveau. So darf man sich auch bei dem kleinen Output auf melodische und heftige Songs freuen. „Fading Away“ stürzt sich somit todesmutig in die Düsternis. Man erkennt den Stil von HALLS OF OBLIVION sofort. Es ist diese melancholische Mischung von überwältigender Düsternis und zerbrechlicher Romantik, die die besondere Note ausmachen. Prägnant sind nach wie vor die wilden verspielten Gitarrenleads, welche auf den Riffs tanzen. Als charakteristischer Kontrast entpuppt sich unter anderem das melodische cleane Gitarrenspiel.

Eine grandiose Arbeit,

die hier abgeliefert wird. „King Of None“ wird zwischenzeitlich im Hintergrund von leichten Pianoklängen untermalt. Auch ein hintergründiges Flötenspiel lässt sich mittendrin in einer ruhigen Phase ausmachen. Dezente symphonische Fragmente in den schnelleren Teilen des Songs bieten zusätzliches Drama . „Schnell“ ist auch ein gutes Stichwort, denn in der zweiten Hälfte des Songs gibt es kein Halten mehr und ein Strudel der Tobsucht erfasst den Hörer und reißt ihn erbarmungslos mit sich. Einfach der pure Wahnsinn, in dem sich auch der Titelsong „… of hate and despair“ sehr wohlfühlt und in bandtypischer Manier begeistert.

Eine Überraschung

der EP wird am Ende enthüllt. Der Song „Walking Dead“ vom Album „Endtime Poetry“ wird hier in einer akustischen Version dargeboten und weiß auch in dieser Form zu gefallen. Timo Fielker als Sänger der Gruppe MINDEAD ist ein guter Freund von HALLS OF OBLIVION und hat bereits mit seinem cleanen Gesang als Gast auf dem letzten Album für tolle Momente gesorgt, indem er als Kontrast zu den harschen Screams und Growls in Erscheinung trat. Da lag es nahe, ihn auch für die Akustikversion dieses Songs einzuladen. So wird der Song auf eine andere emotionale Ebene getragen und entpuppt sich als berührende Ballade. Die Akustikgitarre begleitet die Stimme famos und die Violine verpasst dem Song eine zusätzliche gefühlvolle Tiefe.

Fazit

HALLS OF OBLVION bewegen sich weiter auf hohem Niveau und haben nichts von ihrer Faszination verloren. Mit viel Geschick und Kunstfertigkeiten verweben sie in ihrem Sound unterschiedliche Elemente zu einem ganz eigenen Kunstwerk. Um all dies zu erkennen, lohnt sich auf jeden Fall genaueres und aufmerksames Zuhören. Diese Band spielt niveautechnisch in der Oberliga, kann mühelos mit den Großen der Szene mithalten und sogar noch eigene Akzente setzen. Es wird höchste Zeit, dass die Band die Aufmerksamkeit bekommt, die sie verdient.

HALLS OF OBLIVION from Stuttgart had released in 2019 with „Endtime Poetry“ (Bandcamp ) a fantastic album that I can only warmly recommend to every black metal fan. A captivating album with a wide range of appealing melodies and great song structures, which also sometimes drift into the quiet dreamy realms. All this is played on a technically high level.

Now there are finally supplies in the form of the EP „… of hate and despair“ ( VÖ 05.02.2021, Bandcamp ), which takes us after all 25 minutes with four songs in the dark world. Let’s listen to what HALLS OF OBLIVION reveal for black treasures. There is a surprise in any case.

High level

HALLS OF OBLIVION remain true to their motto, and that on the usual high level. So you can also look forward to melodic and heavy songs on the small output. „Fading Away“ thus plunges death-defyingly into the gloom. One recognizes the style of HALLS OF OBLIVION immediately. It is this melancholic mixture of overwhelming gloom and fragile romanticism that make up the special touch.The wild playful guitar leads, which dance on the riffs, are still concise. Subtle symphonic fragments in the faster parts of the song provide additional drama . „Fast“ is also a good keyword, because in the second half of the song there is no stopping and a whirlwind of rage grips the listener and mercilessly pulls him along. Simply pure madness, in which also the title track „… of hate and despair“ feels very comfortable and inspires in band-typical manner.

Timo Fielker as singer of the group MINDEAD is a good friend of HALLS OF OBLIVION and has already provided with his clean vocals as a guest on the last album for great moments by appearing as a contrast to the harsh screams and growls. So it was obvious to invite him for the acoustic version of this song as well. So the song is carried to another emotional level and turns out to be a touching ballad. Result

HALLS OF OBLVION continue to move on a high level and have lost nothing of their fascination. With a lot of skill and artistry they interweave different elements in their sound to a very own work of art. In order to recognize all this, it is definitely worthwhile to listen more closely and attentively. This band plays in the upper class, can effortlessly keep up with the big ones of the scene and even set their own accents. It’s high time that the band gets the attention it deserves.
