Wiedergeburt oder Totgeburt?

Altersmüdigkeit sucht man auch nach 26 Jahren Bandgeschichte bei EKTOMORF (Facebook ) vergebens. Ganz im Gegenteil. Mit dem neuen Output „Reborn“ geht es wie gewohnt knallhart zur Sache. Was anderes erwartet man von den Männern auch nicht und das machen sie sofort nach den ersten Noten klar. Hier wird nicht lange gefackelt und die Ohren stehen direkt unter Feuer.

Doch sind die laut Pressetext “ im Thrash-Metal wiedergeborenen“ EKTOMORF besser als die Entwicklung, die sie bisher hinter sich gebracht haben?

Zoltán Farkas

erkennt man mit seinem Gesang immer auf Anhieb. Er hat eine Stimmfarbe und Art an sich, die ihn eindeutig charakterisieren. Er hat von seiner aggressiven und wütenden expressiven Ader nichts verloren. Das ist pure Energie, die elektrisiert und einem die Haare zu Berge stehen lässt, während der Schädel kreist oder man sich im Moshpit austobt. Also in der Hinsicht gibt es nichts neues. „Zum Glück!“ könnte man sagen. Es wird Euch keine Ballade oder ähnliches erwarten.

„Reborn“ tritt Euch mit acht Tracks in den Arsch. Acht Tracks? Hmmm… ich dachte, dass es vielleicht doch nur eine EP wäre, denn EKTOMORF waren bisher nicht für überlange Songs bekannt. Das wären dann so um die 20 Minuten Spielzeit gewesen, aber tatsächlich verteilen sich die acht Songs auf ca. 37 Minuten. Das wäre schon mal neu.

Knüppel aus dem Sack

verspricht direkt der erste Song „Ebullition“, der den Wahnsinn eröffnet. Zoltán fegt wütend durch den Song. Hier und da noch geschickte Tempi- und Rhythmuswechsel plus ein wirbelndes Gitarrensolo und fertig ist das erste Brett. Hierbei wird bereits deutlich, dass die Songstrukturen komplexer geworden sind. Dies macht sich auch beim gesamten Album bemerkbar und erklärt damit die längeren Spielzeiten der einzelnen Tracks.

„Reborn“

als Titelsong schließt sich fast nahtlos an und man thrasht wütend drauf los. Allerdings überrascht dann doch der ruhige Mittelpart mit dem melodischen Gitarrensolo. Das lässt umgehend Erinnerungen an die frühen Klänge von METALLICA aufkommen. Mir kam der Song „Master Of Puppets“ umgehend in den Sinn. Nach dem ruhigeren Instrumentalpart geht es über einen brutalen Midtempo-Part wieder in den treibenden Part über. Toller Song, den Ihr hier in einem Video bewundern dürft.

Zombiealarm

„And The Dead Will Walk“ beeindruckt mit tonnenscheren zähflüssigen Riffs. Das Tempo ist gemäßigt, aber das Ding ist ein tonnenschweres dunkles Monster. Und wenn es Euch packt, dann lässt es Euch nicht mehr los. Eine stampfende astreine Groove-Metal-Apocalypse! Einer meiner Lieblingstracks auf der Scheibe.

„Fear Me“ lässt im Gitarrensolopart wieder die melodische Seite aufblitzen. So auch bei bei „Where The Hate Conveices“, der mit einem schönen akustischen Gitarrenspiel eingeleitet wird. Es folgt ein majestätisches melodisches Riffing. Nach den akustischen Streicheleinheiten gibt es aber wieder brutal in die Fresse und die Zeichen stehen auf Vollgas.

Das Verderben wird über Euch hereinbrechen

mit dem Song “ The Worst Is Yet To Come“. Nach unheilverkündenden Glockenschlägen geht der Song mit den bekannten brutalen Riffs zur Sache, welche von mächtigen Trommel- und zeitweise auch Glockenschlägen begleitet werden. Auch hier wird ein melodischer Instrumentalpart eingebunden, bei dem sich das anfänglich „harmlose“ Gitarrensolo zu einer ausgeflippten Darbietung entwickelt.

Der längste Track auf dem Album ist rein instrumentaler Art. „Forsaken“ schlägt mit knapp über sieben Minuten ein. Ist ne ganz nette Sache und gut umgesetzt, aber der Track nimmt irgendwie das Tempo und die Energie raus und man hat das Gefühl, dass das Album damit zu einem Ende kommt. Doch weit gefehlt, denn mit „Smashing To The Past“ wird man noch mal heftig durcheinandergewirbelt und der Puls ist wieder auf 180. Und dann ist doch plötzlich Ende im Gelände. Deshalb wäre „Forsaken“ meiner Meinung nach besser am Ende aufgehoben gewesen oder man hätte nach „Smashing To The Past“ noch ein oder zwei vocalunterstützte Songs rausgehauen.

Fazit

EKTOMORF donnern mit einer mächtigen Soundwalze über den Hörer hinweg. Auf „Reborn“ gibt es neue Akzente im Sound von EKTOMORF. So sind die Soundstrukturen komplexer geworden und offerieren eine bis dato in der Form nicht gezeigte melodische Seite von EKTOMORF. Die Gitarrensoli nehmen in diesem Zusammenhang mehr Raum ein als in der Vergangenheit und wirbeln den Sound ordentlich auf. Ein oder zwei Songs mehr hätten es aber ruhig noch sein dürfen.

Rebirth or stillborn?

Even after 26 years of band history, you won’t find any age fatigue in EKTOMORF (Facebook ). Quite the opposite. With the new output „Reborn“ it goes as usual hard to the point. You wouldn’t expect anything else from the men and they make that clear immediately after the first notes. They don’t flinch for long and the ears are directly under fire.

But are EKTOMORF -according to the press text “ in thrash metal reborn“- better than the development they have done so far?

Zoltán Farkas

is always instantly recognizable with his singing. He has a vocal color and manner about him that clearly characterize him. He has lost nothing of his aggressive and angry expressive vein. This is pure energy that electrifies and makes your hair stand on end while your skull is spinning or you’re going wild in the mosh pit. So in that respect there is nothing new. „Fortunately!“ you could say. You won’t expect a ballad or anything like that.

Thrashing

promises directly the first song „Ebullition“, which opens the madness. Zoltán sweeps furiously through the song. Here and there still clever tempo and rhythm changes plus a whirling guitar solo and ready is the first breaker. Here it is already clear that the song structures have become more complex. This is also noticeable on the entire album and explains the longer playing times of the individual tracks.

„Reborn“

as the title track follows almost seamlessly and you thrash furiously. However, the quiet middle part with the melodic guitar solo surprises. This immediately brings back memories of the early sounds of METALLICA. The song „Master Of Puppets“ immediately came to my mind. After the quieter instrumental part, it goes over a brutal midtempo part back into the driving part. Great song, which you can admire here in a video.

Zombie alert

„And The Dead Will Walk“ impresses with tons of shear viscous riffs. The tempo is moderate, but this thing is a barrel-chested dark monster. And when it grabs you, it won’t let you go. A pounding straight Groove Metal apocalypse! One of my favorite tracks on the disc.

„Fear Me“ lets the melodic side flash again in the guitar solo part. This is also the case with „Where The Hate Conveices“, which is introduced with a beautiful acoustic guitar playing. It is followed by a majestic melodic riffing. After the acoustic caresses, however, there is again brutal in the face and the signs are on full throttle.

Doom will come upon you

with the song „The Worst Is Yet To Come“. After ominous chimes, the song gets down to business with the familiar brutal riffs, which are accompanied by powerful drums and at times also mighty bells. A melodic instrumental part is also included here, where the initially „harmless“ guitar solo develops into a freaky performance.

The longest track on the album is purely instrumental, „Forsaken“ hits with just over seven minutes. This is quite a nice thing and well implemented, but the track somehow takes the pace and energy out and you have the feeling that the album comes to an end. But far from it, because with „Smashing To The Past“ you are once again violently confused and the pulse is again at 180. And then is suddenly the end of the road. That’s why „Forsaken“ would have been better at the end in my opinion or after „Smashing To The Past“.

Result

EKTOMORF thunder over the listener with a powerful sound roller. On „Reborn“ there are new accents in the sound of EKTOMORF. The sound structures have become more complex and offer a melodic side of EKTOMORF that has not been shown in this form so far. The guitar solos take more space in this context than in the past and stir up the sound properly. However, I would have liked one or two more songs on the album.
