SCANNER (Facebook/Homepage) haben mich bereits in meiner Jugendzeit begleitet, denn die Erstformation fand sich 1986 zusammen. Letztendlich ist aber nur Axel Julius nach einigen Besetzungswechseln von der damaligen Originalformation übrig geblieben. Nach dem Album „Hypertrace“ im Jahr 2016 starten sie nun mit „The Cosmic Race“ neu durch.

Der Opener „The Earth Song“ wurde als erste Single ausgewählt. Keine schlechte Wahl, denn der Song geht direkt in die Vollen mit Flitzefingern an den Gitarren, die mit fetzigen Leads den Song anzünden und zum brennen bringen. Anschließend brennt das Feuer heiß und fegt wie ein Feuersturm voran. Dazu gesellen sich noch nette Spielereien, so dass die fast 6 Minuten Spielzeit im Fluge vergehen. Ein deutscher Sprechpart kommt überraschend. Er stört glücklicherweise nicht, aber so richtig Sinn macht er irgendwie auch nicht. Die Einbindung von dezenten indigenen Gesängen sind allerdings stimmig und ein cooles Feature. Sie bringen noch mal eine gelungene Abwechslung ins Spiel.

„Space Battalion“

stellt ein ähnliches großes Kaliber dar, das ebenfalls mächtig einschlägt. Chöre leiten den Song ein, bevor Riffs und Drums den Ton angeben. Es mischt sich ein kurzes Gitarrensolo ein und dann geht es ab. Auch sonst sorgt die Leadgitarre zwischendurch für coole Akzente. Die Übergänge zwischen den verschiedenen Rhythmusregionen laufen flüssig ineinander. Nur mittig im Song ist der Wechsel härter, wenn der Song in einen Marschrhythmus übergeht. Ein Part, der geradezu einlädt live das Publikum gesanglich zu integrieren. Insgesamt überbrückt der Song die 06:45 Minuten Spielzeit mit einem ereignisreichen Songverlauf.

Songs wie beispielsweise „Face The Fight“, „Farewell To The Sun“ oder auch „A New Horizon“ können allerdings im direkten Vergleich das Topniveau der Highlights nicht halten und fallen etwas zurück. Dies bedeutet jedoch nicht, dass es schlechte Songs wären, die man sofort überspringen müsste. Denn auf dem Album gibt es keine schlechten Songs. Die Bandbreite reicht von gut bis absolut top.

Als weiteres Highlight wäre auf jeden Fall ebenfalls „Dance Of The Dead“ zu nennen. Alleine schon durch seinen dunklen massiven Doom-Sound fällt er aus dem üblichen Soundkonzept des Albums. Der Song macht deutlich, dass man nicht immer aufs Tempo drücken muss, um einen starken Song zu erschaffen. Herrlich düster und schwerfällig knallt es aus den Boxen. Ich mag gut gemachte Überraschungen auf einem Album. Und SCANNER schaffen es diesen Song trotzdem nicht als Fremdkörper wirken zu lassen. Echt stark!

Fazit

SCANNER liefern mit „The Cosmic Race“ Anfang dieses noch jungen Jahres das erste Sahnestück im Power Metal ab. Alles wird in hochklassiger Qualität präsentiert. Von guten Songs bis zu absoluten Highlights reicht die Palette, so dass man das Album wunderbar durchhören kann. Für Fans des Power Metal jedenfalls der erste Pflichtkauf des Jahres.

SCANNER (Facebook/Homepage) have been with me since my youth, as the first formation came together in 1986. In the end, however, only Axel Julius remained from the original line-up after a few line-up changes. After the album „Hypertrace“ in 2016, they are now taking off again with „The Cosmic Race“.

The opener „The Earth Song“ was chosen as the first single. Not a bad choice, because the song goes straight ahead with lightning fingers on the guitars, which set the song on fire with burning leads. Then the fire burns hot and sweeps forward like a firestorm. There are also some nice gimmicks, so that the almost 6-minute playing time flies by. A German speaking part comes as a surprise. Fortunately, it doesn’t get in the way, but somehow it doesn’t really make sense for me. The inclusion of subtle indigenous chants is, however, coherent and a cool feature. They add a nice change of pace to the music.

„Space Battallion“

is of a similar caliber and also packs a powerful punch. Choirs introduce the song before riffs and drums set the tone. A short guitar solo joins in and then the mighty spaceship goes off. The lead guitar also provides cool action. The transitions between the different rhythm regions run smoothly into each other. Only in the middle of the song is the change harder, when the song switches into a marching rhythm. A part that virtually invites the audience to join in vocally at a live gig. Overall, the song bridges the 06:45 minute playing time with an eventful song concept.

However, songs such as „Face The Fight“, „Farewell To The Sun“ or „A New Horizon“ cannot maintain the top level of the highlights in direct comparison. However, this does not mean that they’re bad songs that should be skipped immediately. Because there are no bad songs on the album. The spectrum ranges from good to top class.

Another highlight is definitely „Dance Of The Dead“. Its dark, massive doom sound alone makes it stand out from the album’s usual sound concept. But SCANNER has managed to incorporate this particular song into the whole story without it appearing as a foreign element in the overall picture. The song makes clear that you don’t always have to gain the tempo to create a strong song. It bangs out of the speakers in a wonderfully dark and ponderous way. I like well-crafted surprises on an album. Great!

Conclusion

With „The Cosmic Race“, SCANNER deliver the first high class power metal album at the beginning of this young year. Everything is presented in top-class quality. The album ranges from good songs to absolute highlights, making it a wonderful listen. For fans of power metal, it’s definitely the first must-buy of the year.
