Vielleicht wird sich manch einer wundern, dass ich ein Album von RAY WILSON (Facebook, Homepage ) rezensiere. Wer ein wenig meine Reviews verfolgt, der wird wissen, dass ich mich eher in Gefilden fetziger Rockmusik aufhalte oder mich durch härtere Gefilde bis hin zu der stürmischen See des extremen Metal kämpfe.

„The Weight Of Man“ (VÖ 27.08.2021) von RAY WILSON ist kein Album, dass mit gnadenlosen massiven Riffs voranprescht. Es hat auch kein wütendes Drumming oder fetzt sonst irgendwie wild durch meine Gehörgänge. Und trotzdem ist das Album „The Weigt Of Man“ von RAY WILSON ein Werk, was ich bewundere und mich sehr beeindruckt. Und vielleicht wird es das auch bei Euch tun, wenn Ihr dieses Review gelesen und gehört habt. Nun aber erst einmal kurz einige Worte zum Künstler selber.

RAY WILSON

wird für viele der älteren Fans unter uns ein Begriff sein. Falls ihn jemand nicht kennt, der sollte sich den kurzen Abschnitt durchlesen, denn der Background von dem Mann ist schon beeindruckend. RAY WILSON ist ein schottischer Rocksänger. Bekannt wurde er in den 90´er Jahren mit der Band STILTSKIN. Der wohl bekannteste Song der Band war „Inside“, den sich der Jeanshersteller Levis als Werbesong auserkoren hatte. Mit dieser Band war Ray sehr erfolgreich unterwegs. Doch die Band löste sich irgendwann auf. Grund dafür war auch, dass Ray als Nachfolger von Phil Collins für die Band GENESIS engagiert wurde. Allerdings gab es leider nur ein Album mit GENESIS. Danach war es auch mit dieser Band endgültig vorbei. Im neuen Jahrtausend kurbelte Ray dann seine Solokarriere an und diese lief richtig heiß. Er hat über die Jahre mit unzähligen Künstlern aus vielen musikalischen Bereichen zusammen gearbeitet. Der Mann weiß also definitiv, was er tut. So viel ist sicher!

Eine idyllische Oase

In Zeiten wie diesen, in denen das globale Chaos uns in all seinen hässlichen Fratzen mit einem teuflischen Grinsen begegnet , sind Oasen der Ruhe eine Seltenheit geworden. Die Momente, in denen man mal runterkommen und nur für sich selbst sein kann, sind selten geworden in dieser hektischen und brutalen Welt. Und da ist das aktuelle Album von Ray Wilson ein willkommenes Geschenk.

Ein Album voller Feinheiten und Raffinesse

Diese ist mal wieder ein Album, dass man bitte mit all seinen Sinnen genießen sollte. Es steckt voller toller Ideen und Arrangements, die einem sonst vielleicht nicht auffallen würden, wenn man es nur mal so nebenbei hören würde.

„You Could Have Been Someone“ leitet das Album mit einer sanft ein und es strahlt direkt diese wohlige Wärme aus, die den Hörer zärtlich umarmt und festhält. Beim folgenden „Mother Earth“ fühle ich sogar den Geist von Leonhard Cohen durch die Songs schweben. Gerade der Beginn mit dem Piano hat mich an ihn erinnert. Leonhards Stimme hätte genauso perfekt zu diesem Song gepasst wie die von Ray. Die COVID-19 Krise hat niemanden auf der ganzen Welt verschont und jeder war betroffen. Daher hat Ray das Video mit Untertiteln in verschiedenen Sprachen versehen. Tolle Idee!

Sogar dem recht einfach gehaltenen Song „Almost Famous“ kann man sich nicht entziehen . Wunderschöne Melodien schmiegen sich an die tolle einfühlsame Stimme von Ray und lassen mich langsam dahinschmelzen wie der Wachs einer brennenden Kerze. Eine perfekte Ballade!

„The Weight Of Man“

als Titeltrack zeigt wunderbar, was ich mit Raffinesse meinte. Gerade der Titeltrack ist eine komplexes facettenreiches musikalisches Gedicht. Dabei wird mit geschickt komponierten Akzenten eine ergreifende Atmosphäre erschaffen. Cleane Gitarren erklingen in unterschiedlichen Erscheinungsformen in fließenden Übergängen mit sauberen feinen E-Gitarren.

Apropos fließend… Andere Songs wie z.B. „We Knew The Truth Once“ plätschern so friedvoll dahin wie ein idyllischer Gebirgsbach und es ist einfach nur schön den musikalischen Fluß auf sich wirken zu lassen.

Assoziationen zu PINKD FLOYD

funkeln auch immer wieder mal durch. So z.B. in solchen Songs wie „Amelia“, der zunächst dunkel und mit einem prägnanten Bass aufspielt, dann aber plötzlich mit beschwingten Gitarren eine Stimmungsveränderung erfährt und die bluesige E-Gitarre immer mehr den Ton angibt.

„I, Like You“ nimmt ebenfalls zum Ende hin deutlich an Dramatik zu und finalisiert mit einem rockigen Solo der Sonderklasse. Und auch wenn die Songs eine hervorragende Zusammenarbeit aller beteiligten Künstler sind, möchte ich an dieser Stelle den Gitarristen Ali Ferguson lobend erwähnen, der auf diesem Album mit den unterschiedlichen Gitarrenklängen begeistert.

Fazit

RAY WILSON hat mit „The Weight Of Man“ ein wunderschönes Album geschaffen, dass es versteht sich mit seinen kunstvollen Kompositionen in die Ohren zu schmeicheln und dort nachhaltig zu verharren. Es ist ein Album, dass in den Grundzügen melancholisch ist ohne sich darin zu verlieren. Aber es strahlt auch eine wohlige Wärme aus, in der man sich geborgen fühlt. Ray Wilson regt zum Nachdenken an und lädt gleichzeitig zum Träumen ein. Es findet beim Hören eine Entschleunigung der Seele statt. Dabei vermögen die Songs in einer abwechslungsreichen Art und Weise keine Langeweile aufkommen zu lassen. Es ist so herrlich unaufdringlich und dabei so anschmiegsam, dass man es stundenlang anhören könnte ohne davon genervt zu sein. Das ist natürlich auch der bemerkenswert gefühlvollen Gesangsleistung von Ray Wilson zu verdanken.

Maybe some will be surprised that I review such an album. If you follow my reviews at `metal-headds.de´ a little bit, you will know that I rather stay in the realms of groovy Rock music or I fight myself through hard realms up to the stormy sea of Extreme Metal.

„The Weight Of Man“ (Release 2021-08-27) by RAY WILSON is not an album that rushes forward with merciless massive riffs. It also has no furious drumming or otherwise shreds wildly through my ears. And nevertheless the album „The Weigt Of Man“ by RAY WILSON is a work, what I admire and impresses me very much. And maybe it will do the same with you, if you have read and listened to this review. But now first a few words about the artist himself.

RAY WILSON

is well known for many of the older fans among us. If you don’t know him, you should read this short paragraph, because the man’s background is quite impressive. RAY WILSON is a Scottish rock singer. He became famous in the 90’s with the band STILTSKIN. The most famous song of the band was „Inside“, which was chosen by the jeans label `Levis´ as an advertising song on TV. With STILTSKIN Ray was very successful on the road. But the band broke up at some point. The reason for this was also that Ray was hired as the successor of Phil Collins for the band GENESIS. Unfortunately there was only one album with GENESIS. After that it was also over with this band. In the new millennium Ray started his solo career and it really took off. Over the years he has worked with countless artists from many musical fields. So the man definitely knows what he’s doing. That much is for sure!

An idyllic oasis

In times like these, when global chaos meets us in all its ugly grimaces with a devilish grin, oases of calm have become a rarity. The moments when you can come down and just be for yourself have become rare in this hectic and brutal world. And there the current album by Ray Wilson is a welcome gift.

An album full of subtlety and sophistication

This is once again an album that you should please enjoy with all your senses. It is full of great ideas and arrangements.

„You Could Have Been Someone“ introduces the album with a gentle and it directly radiates this comforting warmth that tenderly embraces and holds the listener. With the following „Mother Earth“ I even feel the spirit of Leonhard Cohen floating through the songs. Especially the beginning with the piano reminded me of Leonhard Cohen. His voice would have fit this song just as perfectly as Ray’s. The COVID-19 crisis spared no one around the world and everyone was affected. That’s why Ray has subtitled the video in different languages. Great idea!

Even the rather simple song „Almost Famous“ will touch your heart. Beautiful melodies nestle with the great sensitive voice of Ray and let me slowly melt away like the wax of a burning candle. A perfect pure ballad!

„The Weight Of Man“

as the title track shows what I meant by sophistication. The title track in particular is a complex multi-faceted musical poem. Cleverly composed accents create a poignant atmosphere. Clean guitars in various guises harmonize in flowing transitions with clean fine electric guitar.

Speaking of flowing… Other songs like „We Knew The Truth Once“ ripple along as peacefully as an idyllic mountain stream and it’s just nice to let it sink in.

Associations with PINK FLOYD

also sparkle through every now and then. For example, in such songs as „Amelia“, which initially plays dark and with a concise bass, but then suddenly experiences a change of mood with upbeat guitars and the bluesy electric guitar increasingly sets the tone.

„I, Like You“ also increases significantly in drama towards the end and finalizes with a rocking solo of the special class. And even if the songs are an excellent collaboration of all artists involved, I would like to mention here the guitarist Ali Ferguson, who inspires us all on this album with diverse great guitar playing.

Result

RAY WILSON has created with „The Weight Of Man“ a beautiful album that knows how to flatter itself with its artful compositions in your mind and to persist there. It is an album that is melancholic in its basic features without losing itself in it. But it also radiates a comforting warmth in which you feel secure. Ray Wilson makes you think about some things and invites you to dream at the same time. A grounding of the soul takes place while listening. At the same time, the songs are able in a varied way not to let boredom arise. It is so wonderfully unobtrusive, but so cuddly that you could listen to it for hours without being annoyed by it. Of course, this is also due to the remarkably soulful vocal performance of Ray Wilson.
