Symphonic Power Metal

HEXED (Facebook) kommen aus Schweden und wie wir alle wissen, hat dieses Land viele hervorragende Bands hervorgebracht. Nun haben wir es mit einer female-fronted Band zu tun, an deren Spitze Sängerin Tina Gunnarsson steht. HEXED veröffentlichen am 30.09.2022 ihr Album „Pagans Rising“. Das Thema des Albums habe ich in einem mehr als interessanten tiefgehenden Interview mit Tina erörtert. Um die Geschichte des Album vollkommen zu verstehen, sollte man sich dieses Interview mal zu Gemüte führen (Interview).

Bombastisch

Schon allein das Cover ist ein wahres Kunstwerk. Ein optisch beeindruckendes Gemälde, welches mit viel Liebe zum Detail gefertigt wurde und auch für einen cineastischen Blockbuster Fantasy Film entworfen sein könnte. Die Symbolik dieses Gemäldes erschließt sich beim genaueren Hinsehen in Verbindung mit dem lyrischen Inhalt der Songs (siehe oben erwähntes Interview).

Cineastischer Symphonic Power Metal

Der Opener „Pagans Rising“ reißt Euch umgehend ins Geschehen. Sängerin Tina imponiert von der ersten Sekunde an und zeigt sehr eindrucksvoll, aus welch hartem Holz sie geschnitzt ist und was sie für eine Power entfalten kann. Mann ist jedenfalls direkt hellwach und sie hat die volle Aufmerksamkeit des Hörers. Aus tiefster Kehle holt sie ihre kraftvolle rockige Stimmgewalt hervor. Und wenn ich kraftvoll meine, dann aus voller Überzeugung. Tina hat eine der vielseitigsten und besten Stimmen in diesem Metal-Genre. Sie hat eine Kraft in ihrer Stimme, die Euch wie ein stürmischer Orkan anbrüllt. Trotz ihrer wahnsinnigen Energie kann sie Euch auch mit viel Gefühl verzaubern. Bei „Incantation“ offenbart Tina, dass sie auch die höchsten Töne vortrefflich beherrscht.

Eine Topsängerin

alleine macht aber noch keine gute Band aus. Zum Glück sind ihre Mitstreiter bei HEXED ebenfalls großartige Musiker. So entstehen Songs von allerhöchster Güte. „Pagan Rising“ als Opener wird damit anfangs direkt zu einem Paradebeispiel für mitreißenden epischen Power Metal Song mit symphonischem Einschlag. Die mitunter eingestreuten männlichen Growls geben dem Ganzen noch eine besondere Würze. Besonders geil finde ich auch den langen martialischen Schrei von Tina, bevor das epische Gitarrensolo einsetzt. Perfekter und opulenter kann man einen Song nicht präsentieren. Einfach eine Wucht!

Die Power setzt sich im zweiten Song „Resurrection“ nicht minder fort. Die bombastische Inszenierung wird bis zum Äußersten getrieben. Die hervorragenden Melodien bilden dabei ein starkes Grundgerüst des Sounds, der trotz des brachialen Erscheinungsbildes mit allerlei Feinheiten versehen ist. Der Chorus ist nicht nur in diesem Song eine Macht! Auch das druckvolle temperamentvolle Drumming pumpt den Sound gehörig auf. Die Dynamik in den Songs ist spürbar. Das technisch hochwertige und sehr lebendige Gitarrenspiel ist ein wahrer Genuß und die Soli fügen sich sehr harmonisch in die Songs ein. Aber macht Euch selbst einen Eindruck.

Einen wahren Gewaltmarsch

legen HEXED hier vor. Ruhepausen gönnt man sich wenig. So eine reinrassige Ballade für eine Rast auf der Reise, die man vielleicht erwarten würde, sucht man hier vergebens. Natürlich gibt es Songs, die es ein wenig zurückhaltender angehen lassen, doch von einer lieblichen Schmusenummer ist hier nichts zu hören. Man setzt bei HEXED eher in den Songs selber auf kleine aber feine Ruhephasen, um so der feinen Melodik und/oder Synfonik ihren Raum zu geben. Dies wird besonders auch beim Song „Stigma Diaboli“ deutlich.

Sehr viele Möglichkeiten

hat die Band sich zu verwirklichen. Dies offenbart sich beim Hören des Albums. Instrumental ist man super aufgestellt und gesanglich kann man ebenfalls aus dem Vollen schöpfen. Es ist schön, dass der Wechsel von weiblicher und männlicher Stimme nicht im Standardmodus verschwendet wird und somit aufgezwungen wirkt. Man setzt dieses Stilmittel akzentuiert ein, wo es dem Song dienlich ist. Ich wäre neugierig, ob Stellan Gunnarsson gleichermaßen mit einer cleanen gefühlvollen Stimme dienen könnte. Beim Song „Blasphemy“, in dem Stellan einen größeren gesanglichen Anteil beisteuert, kam mir die Idee, dass es eine interessante Option wäre, wenn Tina und Stellan anstatt im gesanglichen Wechsel mal ein simultanes Duett präsentieren würden. Jedenfalls überzeugt Stellan bei seinen Parts mit einer starken Stimme, egal ob mit seinen dunklen Growls oder ob mit seinem kernigen Gesang. Dies zeigt sich auch eindrucksvoll bei der Single „Repentance“.

Fazit

HEXED haben mit „Pagans Rising“ einen akustischen Blockbuster erschaffen. Das Album vollzieht eine epische Reise mit kraftvollen opulenten Songs, die mit imposanter Magie eindringliche Geschichten erzählen. Es wird trotz Bombast viel Wert auf ein ausgeglichenes Hörerlebnis gelegt und hat es sich zur Mission gemacht, die Songs mit viel spürbarer Dynamik zu versehen, die sich aus wunderschönen Melodienbögen und energischer Härte zusammensetzt. Sehr beeindruckend!

HEXED haben ein riesiges Potential und ich bin sehr auf die weitere Entwicklung gespannt. Ich könnte mir noch so viele Möglichkeiten der musikalischen Vielfalt vorstellen, zu denen die Band in der Lage wäre. Ich könnte mir sogar eine etwas progressivere Ausrichtung vorstellen, bei der man z.B. die symphonische Einbindung auch mal klanglich differenzierter mit weniger Bombast einsetzt. Grundsätzlich gefällt mir die härtere und dunklere Entwicklung von HEXED sehr gut.

Symphonic Power Metal

HEXED (Facebook) come from Sweden and as we all know, this country has produced many excellent bands. Now we have to deal with a female-fronted band headed by singer Tina Gunnersson. HEXED will release their album „Pagans Rising“ on Sept. 30, 2022. I discussed the topic of the album in a more than interesting in-depth interview with Tina. To fully understand the story of the album, you should have a look at this interview (Interview).

Bombastic

The cover itself is a true work of art.It is visually impressive work of art, which was made with great attention to detail and could also be designed for a cinematic blockbuster fantasy film. The symbolism of this painting opens up when you take a closer look in connection with the lyrical content of the songs (see interview mentioned above).

Cineastic symphonic Power Metal

The opener „Pagans Rising“ immediately pulls you into the action. Singer Tina impresses from the first second on and shows very impressively what hard wood she is made of and what kind of power she can unfold. Man is in any case directly wide awake and she has the full attention of the listener. From the deepest throat she brings out her powerful rocking vocal power. And when I say powerful, I mean with full conviction. Tina has one of the most versatile and best voices in this metal genre. She has a power in her voice that roars at you like a stormy hurricane. Despite her insane energy, she can also enchant you with a lot of emotion. In „Incantation“ Tina reveals that she also masters the highest notes admirably.

A top singer

alone, however, does not make a good band. Fortunately, her bandmates are also great musicians. This is how songs of the highest quality are created. „Pagan Rising“ as the opener becomes a prime example of a rousing epic power metal song with a symphonic touch. The interspersed male growls give the whole thing a special spice. I also find the long martial scream of Tina especially cool, before the epic guitar solo kicks in. More perfect and opulent you can not present a song. Simply a blast!

It continues with the second song „Resurrection“. The bombastic production is pushed to the extreme. Excellent melodies form a strong foundation of the sound, which is provided with all kinds of subtleties despite the brute appearance. The chorus is not only in this song a mighty feature! Also the powerful spirited drumming pumps up the sound properly. The dynamics in the songs are noticeable. The technically high-quality and lively guitar playing is a real pleasure and the solos fit very harmoniously into the songs. But make your own impression.

A real epic journey

for the listener, but if you expect a ballad for a rest, you are wrong. Of course, there are songs that are a little more restrained, but you will not hear a sweet cuddly song on this album. HEXED has rather succeeded in filling some restrained phases in the songs, in order to give so the fine melody and/or symphonic their space. This is especially clear in the song „Stigma Diaboli“.

Many options

the band has to realize itself. This is revealed when listening to the album. Instrumentally they have a super set up and vocally everything is on top. It is nice that the alternation of female and male voice is not presented standard. HEXED use this stylistic device accentuated where it serves the song. I would be curious if Stellan Gunnarsson could equally serve with a clean soulful voice. On the song „Blasphemy“, where Stellan contributes a larger vocal part, I got the idea that it would be an interesting option if Tina and Stellan would present a simultaneous duet instead of alternating vocally. In any case, Stellan convinces with a strong voice in his parts, no matter if with his dark growls or with his gritty vocals. This is also impressively shown on the single „Repentance“.

Conclusion

HEXED have created an acoustic blockbuster. „Pagans Rising“ completes an epic journey with powerful opulent songs that tell haunting stories with imposing magic. There is a lot of emphasis on a balanced listening experience despite the bombast, and has made it a mission to infuse the songs with plenty of palpable dynamics made up of beautiful melodic arcs and energetic heaviness. Very impressive!

HEXED have a huge potential and I am very excited about the further development. I could imagine so many more possibilities of musical diversity that the band would be capable of. I could even imagine a somewhat more progressive orientation, in which, for example, the symphonic integration is sometimes used in a more sonically differentiated way with less bombast. Basically, I like the harder and darker development of HEXED very much.

HEXED (Facebook) sind eine relativ junge Band aus Schweden. Sie wurde 2015 von den erfahrenen Musikern Tina und Stellan Gunnarsson gegründet. Einen ersten Eindruck verschaffte mir die erste Single „Repentance“ auf YouTube sah und hörte. Ich war so beeindruckt, dass ich sofort die limitierte goldene Vinyl des kommenden neuen Albums „Pagans Rising“ vorbestellt habe. Außerdem wollte ich mehr über HEXED und deren Album erfahren. Deshalb bin ich froh, dass Tina sich die Zeit für ein Interview mit ‚metal-heads.de‘ genommen hat.

Enge Verbindung

MH: Hallo Tina! Du und Stellan habt die Band im Jahr 2015 gegründet. Eure beiden Nachnamen lauten GUNNARSSON. Ist das ein Zufall oder wie ist Eure Beziehung zueinander?

Tina: Hallo Ares, schön, dich kennenzulernen. Danke für die Frage! Das ist kein Zufall! Wir sind schon seit vielen Jahren ein Paar und mittlerweile auch verheiratet. Bevor wir HEXED gegründet haben, hatten wir noch nie so zusammen Musik geschrieben, wie wir es jetzt tun, obwohl wir beide Musiker sind und vor HEXED andere Bandkonstellationen hatten.

MH: Es steht außer Frage, dass Musik einen großen Teil Eures Lebens ausmacht.
Was gibt Euch die Musik, insbesondere die Metal-Musik,? Wie sehr bestimmt die Musik Euren Alltag zu Hause?

Tina: Musik ist unser Alltag! Wir sind aber alle auch berufstätig, doch die meiste Freizeit geht für musikbezogene Dinge drauf. Wir arbeiten beständig an all den Dingen, die als aktive Band zu tun sind. Keine Ruhe für die Bösen, haha.

Persönliche Songs

MH: Kannst Du mir einen Song nennen, der eine ganz besondere Bedeutung für dich hat? oder mit dem du etwas Besonderes in deinem Leben verbindest?

Tina: Es ist wirklich schwer, einen auszuwählen, das vorherige Album hatte viele persönliche Texte. Ich habe mich für den Titelsong „Netherworld“ von unserem Debütalbum entschieden, weil er mir wirklich geholfen hat, eine Vision zu entwickeln und etwas Kreativeres aus all den Gefühlen zu machen, die ich während dieser Zeit hatte. Für das neue Album „Pagans Rising“ wählte ich „Moorfield“ wegen der Gefühle, die ich bekam, als ich über die Prozesse und die Hinrichtung las, während ich das beschriebene Schicksal dieser drei Frauen schrieb, um die es in den Texten geht.

Visionen

MH: Was war eure Vision, als ihr die Band gegründet habt?

Tina: Unsere Vision war es, die Musik zu machen, die uns vorschwebte. Es sollten all unsere Einflüsse einfließen. Unsere Haupteinflüsse, die wir zu dieser Zeit gemeinsam hatten, waren vor allem Queensryche, Fates Warning, Kamelot und Pagans Mind. Alle diese Bands haben die gleichen Zutaten in der Backstube: melodische Gitarren, kraftvollen Gesang, exzellentes Schlagzeugspiel und zusätzliche Keys und so weiter. Also dachten wir, warum nicht Musik mit unseren eigenen Stärken machen und sehen, wo wir sozusagen landen. Wir haben auch größere Pläne und Visionen für die Liveshows, die wir gerne hinzufügen würden, wenn es möglich ist. Es ist wie ein unerschöpflicher Brunnen an Gedanken.

MH: Mir ist auch Euer fantastisches Cover-Artwork aufgefallen. Ein sehr majestätisches Fantasy-Artwork. Hattet Ihr das Ziel, ein Gesamtkunstwerk zu schaffen, das sich aus verschiedenen Elementen zusammensetzt, sozusagen eine Verbindung zwischen Musik, Lyrik und visueller Darstellung?

Tina: Ja, als die Songs anfingen, Form anzunehmen, haben wir etwas visualisiert, um das Thema zu präsentieren. Der große Lärm (Hexenjagdprozess) in Schweden braucht definitiv Aufmerksamkeit und in diesem Album bezeichnen wir ihn als Dark Storm. Das Artwork, welches Giannis Nakos zusammen mit unseren Ideen und Visionen erschaffen hat, ist unglaublich gut gelungen. Ich weiß, dass wir den richtigen Künstler gewählt haben, um unser Albumthema zu visualisieren.

Schwierige Planungslage

MH: Setzt sich diese aufwendige Kreation auch in eurer Bühnenshow fort? Habt Ihr trotz der schwierigen und unsicheren Situation wegen COVID 19 irgendwelche Konzerte in Europa geplant?

Tina: Wir haben die Elemente auch für die Bühne fertig und sind jetzt in der Planung und stehen für Buchungen im Jahr 2023 zur Verfügung. Es ist wirklich eine schwierige Situation für die Booking-Firmen, die Clubs und auch für uns als Band, die darauf warten, dass die Umplanungszeit (wegen der Pandemie-Einschränkungen) zu Ende ist.

HEXED haben dieses Jahr noch eine weitere Festivalshow gebucht, zusammen mit Conception und Kampfar werden wir am 28. und 29. Oktober beim Orland Rockfest in Norwegen auftreten.

Leben und Magie

MH: Was war Euch bei der Produktion des neuen Albums besonders wichtig?

Tina: Wir wollten einen speziellen Sound, der einige unserer musikalischen Parts mehr hervorhebt, und wir wollten, dass der Sound dieses Mal härter und schwerer ist. Es war uns auch wichtig, dass die Themen mit einem historischen Blick auf reale Dokumente und Geschichten geschrieben wurden, zusammen mit einem dramatisierten Vibe, um den Geschichten mehr Leben und Magie zu geben.

Reue und Wiedergutmachung

MH: Lass uns auf das Thema des Albums eingehen. Zum Beispiel handelt die erste Single „Repentance“ von einem gefallenen Königreich. Die zweite Single „Resurrection“ handelt von einer Wiederauferstehung und handelt von Hexen.
Worum wird es auf dem Album insgesamt gehen? Was hat Euch dazu bewogen, dieses Thema zu wählen?

Tina: Wie ich bereits erwähnt habe, arbeiten wir hier an einem themenbasierten Projekt namens „Pagans Rising“, bei dem wir die schwedische Seite der Geschichte bezüglich der Hexenverfolgung gewählt haben. Wir wollten den Zuhörern sozusagen eine Art Storytelling bieten und ein Bewusstsein dafür schaffen.

Um die Wut, die Fragen nach Reue und Wiedergutmachung darzustellen, haben wir einige der menschlichen Schicksale sichtbar gemacht, indem wir über reale Fälle geschrieben haben, die wir dramatisiert und mit einigen fiktiven Teilen versehen haben. In diesem Sinne haben wir viele Elemente zusammengestellt, um das Buch so vollständig wie möglich zu machen.

„Repentance“ist eher eine Frage nach genau dem: Wo bleibt die formale Entschuldigung der Verantwortlichen, in diesem Fall der Kirche? Wie wollen wir verhindern, dass sich so etwas wiederholt? Dennoch gibt es Länder auf dieser Welt, in denen die Hexenjagd noch existent ist.

„Resurrection“ ist mit viel Wut geschrieben, soll aber auch verdeutlichen wie stark Frauen sind und wie wir immer sichtbarer und als Anführerinnen auserwählt werden. Die Gene der Vorfahren, die wir in uns tragen, halten die Flamme am Leben. Das macht uns zu den Hexen, aber jetzt leuchten wir. Verstehst Du, was ich meine? Die Dinge, für die unsere Vorfahren angeklagt, gefoltert und hingerichtet wurden, sind heute normale Rechte und normale Situation für eine Frau in meinem Land, und das sollte in einer gleichberechtigten Demokratie auch normal bleiben.

Die Menschen vergessen zu leicht

MH: Das Mittelalter war eine Zeit, in der die Religion (in diesem Fall das Christentum) für die Verfolgung und Ermordung von Menschen verantwortlich war, die anders dachten und anders glaubten. Glaubst Du, dass die Menschheit seitdem viel gelernt hat, oder wiederholt sich die Geschichte immer, nur unter anderen Bedingungen?

Tina: Ja, die Menschheit hat einiges gelernt, aber ich befürchte, dass zu leicht vergessen wird. Bei all der Macht, die die Religion über die Menschheit hat, habe ich Angst, dass sie sich wiederholen wird, wenn wir nicht darüber sprechen oder dagegen kämpfen. Die Kinder müssen aus unserer eigenen Geschichte lernen, und ich mag es wirklich nicht, wenn neue Generationen in einer bestimmten Religion indoktriniert werden, lassen Sie sie wählen, wenn sie reif genug sind, um eigene Gedanken und Meinungen zu haben.

Ich bin nicht religiös

MH: Was ist mit Deinem Glauben? Bist Du ein spiritueller Mensch?

Tina: Ich bin überhaupt nicht religiös, aber ich bin in der Tat ein spiritueller Mensch, der an die Synchronizität, das Rad des Lebens und den menschlichen Geist glaubt. Die Macht der Energien ist nicht zu unterschätzen, die Dinge können sich wirklich bewegen und verändern, wenn die Energien der richtigen Personen zusammenkommen. Die Kräfte, mit denen wir im täglichen Leben zu tun haben, sind die 4 Elemente: Erde, Feuer, Wasser und Wind. Alle diese Elemente erzeugen Energie. So einfach ist das.

Die Liebe zur Natur

MH: Du hast auch eine große Liebe zur Natur, die an sich schon etwas Magisches hat.
Oder wie siehst Du das? Was gibt Dir die Natur? Wo hältst Du Dich am liebsten auf?

Tina: Wie bereits erwähnt, kann ich in Bezug auf die 4 Elemente gut nachvollziehen, wann ich einen Mangel an Energie bemerke und wo ich sie abholen sollte. Ich gehe oft in den Wald, wenn ich über Dinge nachdenken und sie verstehen muss. Ich grabe oft in der Erde, wenn meine Gedanken dunkel und schwer werden, und es hilft mir, geerdet zu bleiben.

Wir sollten die Fähigkeit unseres Gehirns nutzen, Energien und Schwingungen aufzunehmen und unserer Intuition mehr zu vertrauen. Darin liegt die Magie. Mein Lieblingsplatz ist der Blick auf einen großen See, der von Bergen umgeben ist. Dort finde ich Ruhe und kann die wirkliche Synchronizität mit allem spüren. Ich liebe den Geruch der beginnenden Jahreszeiten und bin froh, dass es in Schweden vier Jahreszeiten gibt.

MH: Welchen Ort würdest Du gerne besuchen, an dem du noch nicht gewesen bist?

Tina: Die Orte, die ich sehen möchte, haben immer etwas mit der Antike zu tun, aber ich träumte schon als Kind von den Ländern, in denen die Ureinwohner Nordamerikas leben. Heute weiß ich mehr über die Ureinwohner in unserem eigenen Land und liebe auch Lappland. Vielleicht liegt es an den Genen in meinem Blut und an der Lebensweise im Einklang mit der Natur.

Das Gefühl für Magie

MH: Haben angesichts der allgemeinen Zerstörung in der Welt zu viele Menschen das Verständnis für das magische und wertvolle Wunder des Lebens und der Natur verloren oder vielleicht nie besessen?

Tina: Ja und nein. Etwas ändert sich, wenn Menschen schwere Zeiten durchmachen, dann suchen wir auf andere Weise nach Unterstützung, die mehr ist als nur einen Freund anzurufen. Wir suchen die innere Kraft oft in höheren Mächten auf alle möglichen Arten, viele finden die Magie, wenn sie wirklich nach den kleinen Wundern suchen.

Irgendwie muss man den Geisteszustand finden, in dem man sie sehen und schätzen kann. Wir sprechen oft über Achtsamkeit, was ist das? Nun, wenn man wirklich in dem, was man gerade tut, präsent sein kann und die Gedanken nicht abschweifen lässt, dann praktiziert man wirklich Achtsamkeit.

MH: Wofür bist Du im Leben dankbar?

Tina: Ich bin dankbar für meine Familie und Freunde und dafür, dass ich Musik machen, singen, tanzen und eine gute Zeit haben kann, solange ich lebe. Ich bin dankbar für alle, die unsere Musik hören und dafür, dass ich sie live aufführen kann.

HEXED (Facebook) is a relatively young band from Sweden. It was founded in 2015 by experienced musicians Tina and Stellan Gunnarsson. A first impression gave me the first single „Repentance“ on YouTube saw and heard. I was so impressed that I immediately pre-ordered the limited golden vinyl of the upcoming new album „Pagans Rising“. I also wanted to learn more about HEXED and their album. That’s why I’m glad that Tina took the time for an interview with ‚metal-heads.de‘.

Close relationship

MH: Hello Tina! You and Stellan founded the band in 2015. Both of your last names are GUNNARSSON. Is that a coincidence or what is your relationship?

Tina: Hi Ares, nice to meet you. Thanks for the question, that is no coincidence, I am married to him and we have been a couple for many years. When we founded Hexed we had never been writing music together in this way we do now, even though we both are musicians and had other band constellations before Hexed.

MH: There is no question that music defines a big part of your lives.
What does music, especially metal music, give you? How much does music determine your everyday life at home?

Tina: Music is the everyday life for us! With that said, we always work hard with all the stuff that has to be done as an active band. We all are employeed as well and most of the sparetime goes to music related things. No rest fort he wicked, haha.

Personal songs

MH: Tell me a song that has a very special meaning for you or with which you connect something special in your life?

Tina: It is really hard to pick one, the previous album had a lot of personal related lyrics, I choose the titletrack „Netherworld“ from our debut album because it really helped me to create a vision and to build something more creative out of all the feelings I had during that time. In this new album called „Pagans Rising“, I choose „Moorfield“ because of the feelings I get when I read about the trials and execution while I wrote the described destiny of these 3 women that the lyrics are about.

Visions

MH: What was your vision when you founded the band?

Tina: Our vision was to create music that we had in mind and to get all of our inputs and influences into. Our major influences that we had in common at that time was primary Queensryche, Fates Warning, Kamelot and Pagans Mind. All of these bands has the same ingredients in the bakery, melodic guitars, powerful vocals, excellent drumming and additional keys and so on. So we thought, why not create music with our own strenghts and see where we land, so to speak. We also have bigger plans and visions for the live shows that we would like to add when possible, it´s like a never ending machine inside our heads.

MH: I also noticed your fantastic cover artwork. Did you have the goal to create a total work of art, which is composed of different elements, so to say a connection between music, lyricism and visual representation?

Tina: Yes, when all the songs began to take form we visualized something to present the theme around. The great noise (witch hunt process) in Sweden definitely needs attention and in this album we refer it as Dark Storm. The artwork that Giannis Nakos made along with the ideas and visions we had is incredibly well done. I know we chose the right artist to visualize our album theme.

Difficult planning situation

MH: Does this elaborate creation also continue in your stage show? Have you planned any concerts in Europe despite the difficult and uncertain situation because of COVID 19?

Tina: We have the elements ready for the stage as well and we are now planning and are available for bookings in 2023. It has really been a difficult situation for the booking companys, venues and also for us as a band who wait and wait for the re-scheduling time (due to the pandemic restrictions) to end. HEXED have one more festival show booked this year, along with Conception and Kampfar we are attending at Orland Rockfest in Norway in October 28-29.

Life & Magic

MH: What was especially important to you in the production of the new album?

Tina: We aimed to get the special sound we wanted for the new songs and the overall production in the end. A sound that would lift some of our musical parts more and we wanted the sound to be more chuggy and heavy this time. It was also important to us that the theme were written with a historical view from real documents and tales along with a dramatized vibe to give the stories more life and magic.

„Repantance“ & „Resurrection“

MH: Let’s go into the theme of your album. For example, the first single „Repentance“ is about a fallen kingdom. The second single „Resurrection“ is about a resurrection and talks about witches.
What will the album be about overall? Does the album follow a certain story? What made you choose this theme?

Tina: As I mentioned earlier we are working in a theme based project here called “Pagans Rising“, where we chose the swedish side of the history regarding the witch hunts. We wanted to add a storytelling vibe for the listeners so to speak and to make an awareness of it. So to present some of the rage, questions for repentance and to obtain redress we made some of the human destinys visible as we write about real cases which we dramatized and added some fictive parts to as well. So with that in mind, we composed a lot of elements to make it as complete as possible.

„Repentance“ is more of a question for exactly that, where is the formal apology from the responsible, in this case, the church? How will we prevent this to happen again? Still, there are countries in this world where the witch hunts are for real.

„Resurrection“ is written with a lot of rage but also to tell how strong women are and how we become more and more visible and chosen as leaders, ancestral genes that we carry within keeps the flame alive. That makes us the witches, but now we shine. See what I mean? The things that our ancestors were accused, tortured and executed for are today normal rights and normal behaviour for a woman in my country and it should stay normal in an equal democracy.

People forget too easily

MH: The Middle Ages was a time when religion (in that case Christianity) was responsible for the persecution and murder of people who thought differently and believed differently. Do you think that mankind has learned a lot since then or does history always repeat itself, just under different conditions?

Tina: Yes mankind have learned some but my fear is that it is so easy to forget. With all the power religion has over humanity I am afraid it will repeat itself if we don´t speak of it or fight against it. The children must learn from our own history and I really dislike when new generations are indoctrinated in a certain religion, let them choose when they are mature enough to have own thoughts and opinions.

I’m not religious

MH: What about your faith? Are you a spiritual person? Do you believe in higher powers or forces?

Tina: I am not religious at all but am indeed a spiritual person who believes in syncronicity, the wheel of life and the human mind. The power of energies are not to be underestimated, things can really move and change with the right persons energies together. The forces we deal with in everyday life is the 4 elements as Earth, Fire, Water & Wind. All these elements creates energy. It´s just that simple.

The love for nature

MH: You also have a great love for nature, which in itself has something magical. What does nature give you? What are your favorite places? More the mountains, the water or the forests?

Tina: As mentioned above, regarding the 4 elements I can easily understand when I notice a lack of energy of somekind and where I should pick it up. I often visit the woods when I need to contemplate and understand ongoing things. I often dig the soil when my thoughts become dark and heavy and it helps me to stay grounded.

We should use the capacity that our brain has to pick up energies, vibes and to trust our intuition more. Thats where the magic is. My favorite place are viewing a big lake with mountains surrounding it, thats where I find peace of mind and can feel the real syncronicity with everything. I love the smell of each seasons beginning and how lucky I am to have 4 seasons in Sweden.

MH: What place would you like to visit that you haven’t been to yet?

Tina: The places I want to see always has something to do with ancient times but I dreamed of the lands where the native people in North america lives since I was a child. Nowadays I understand more about all the native populations even in our own country and love Lapland as well. Maybe it is the genes in my blood talking and the lifestyle in harmony with nature.

The feeling for magic

MH: With the general destruction in the world, have too many people lost or perhaps never possessed an understanding of the magical and precious wonder of life and nature? 

Tina: Yes and No. Somethings change when people are having hard times, thats when we seek for strenght in other ways than just call a friend. We often seek the inner strength in higher powers in all kinds of ways, many find the magic when they really look for the small wonders. Somehow you need to find that state of mind where you can see and appreciate it. We often speak about mindfulness, what is that? Well, when you really can be present in what you are doing right now and not to let the thoughts wander, thats when you really practice mindfulness.

MH: What are you grateful for in life?

Tina: I am grateful for my family and friends and to be able to create music, sing, dance and having good times while I´m alive. I am grateful for all of you who will listen to our music and that I get to perform it live.
