An Evening with Nicko McBrain (German Version below)

Metal-heads.de was fortunate to have the opportunity this week to see „An Evening with Nicko McBrain“ in Köln at Theater am Tanzbrunnen, one of four shows in Germany following the recent release of the legendary Iron Maiden drummer’s autobiography, „Hello Boys and Girls!“

600 die-hard fans like Katha and Mo

The sold-out spoken word show was a gathering of 600 die-hard fans proudly wearing their tour shirts and battle vests, many of which featured Iron Maiden patches and art exclusively. Two fans seated in front of us, Katha and Mo, enthusiastically showed us a custom-painted jacket by a Portuguese artist, displaying an intricate collage of various iterations of Maiden’s iconic „Eddie“ . Their excitement for hearing stories from the metal legend was infectious, reminding us that all over the world, metal unites strangers as family.

Kick off with German actor Aurel Manthei

Kicking off the evening, star of theater, television, and film Aurel Manthei read an excerpt from the book, returning to read another later in the show after the intermission.

Scream for Me, Cologne!

Nicko McBrain arrives

Nicko McBrain took the stage in a shimmering gold jacket and stylish white leather shoes, and within moments had the crowd rolling with laughter. Over two hours flew by in an instant as the immensely personable musician shared with us cherished stories of his life and career, the audience hanging on every word. On the screen behind him, photos he selected for the book helped narrate stories about his wife Rebecca, his parents, children, bandmates, and other figures he was inspired by or shared in his adventures. Drummer Joe Morello, an early inspiration, was the first such photo; according to McBrain, „It’s all his fault“. When they met, he introduced himself by saying, „my mother wants to meet you“, so she could be face to face with the source of the blame for the sleepless nights in which McBrain tirelessly honed his skills. He complimented the craftsmanship of a pillow placed onstage by an audience member featuring the drummer’s name, prompting him to wonder aloud, „Do I want someone’s ass on my name?“ He gratefully decided, „I’ll put my butt on that any day.“

Sharing great memories while explaining old pics

McBrain retired from touring on December 7th, 2024, deciding then to finish the book he started in 2012, which released officially in Germany on October 28th. He shared stories ranging from his origins with Iron Maiden to watching Tommy Lee of Motley Crüe ignite his flatulence to a more somber journey through his recovery from a stroke in 2023.

Fans swinging to the music of The Life of Brian

At the halfway point in the show, there was a brief intermission featuring the song „Always Look on the Bright Side of Life“ from Monty Python‘s film „The Life of Brian„, to which a lot of the audience happily sang and whistled along as they filed into the lobby for a quick beer.

The funny Q+A part starts

After the second book excerpt reading from Aurel Manthei, the remainder of the show was a Q+A in which crowd participants were given cards to write down questions for McBrain to draw from a basket. In a moment of good fortune, the first question drawn was from a woman who had attended the previous night’s show but had not had her question answered. She asked, „Who would be fired first if the band worked in an office?“ McBrain chuckled and replied, „Bruce„. With love, he went on to refer to his bandmate as „brother“ and „hero“. The next question was, „What was your first impression of the other guys in Maiden at your first rehearsal?“ to which he replied without hesitation, „Thank God I’m still the best-looking bloke in this band!“ For questions he couldn’t read, he enlisted an audience member from the first row, to whom he said affectionately, „Now piss off!“ after each question.

McBrain misses his brothers of Maiden

While intentionally ignoring the house lights flashing to let us know it was time to wrap up the evening, he told us that he missed his brothers in Maiden, leading the crowd to erupt in an emotional chant: „MAIDEN! MAIDEN!“ He went on to say he also misses interacting with fans; but luckily for him and for us, the tour and the book have given us another opportunity to share with him a lifetime of his incredible talent and adventures. Stay tuned to metal-heads.de for a review of the book!

Always look on the bright side of life

Dezember 2024 in São Paulo. Up the Irons!

Hard Facts – Alles Wissenswerte zu Shot At The Devil

Feelgood“ oder „Shout at the devil“ folgen.

Hammer!

www.motley.com
