Das Schicksal ist oft nicht gerecht und sogar mitunter sehr grausam. Auch die Band GRAND SLAM (Facbook/Homepage) hat es übel erwischt, denn sie wurde 1984 von Legende Phil Lynott (THIN LIZZY) gegründet, doch dieser verstarb 1986 mit nur 35 Jahren an Herzversagen. Somit waren GRAND SLAM nur zwei Jahre aktiv, denn der Schock saß bei den verbliebenen Musikern zu tief und die Geschichte von GRAND SLAM war zu Ende, bevor sie überhaupt richtig begonnen hatte. So blieben musikalische Geschichten unerzählt. Laurence Archer fasste sich nach langer Zeit dann doch ein Herz, holte die Band 2016 aus dem Koma zurück und begann ein altes unvollendetes Kapitel zu seinem Ende zu führen. Laurence kommentiert dazu:

Ich möchte, dass jeder uns als eine neue Band sieht… und für alle die, die Grand Slam seit 1984 nicht mehr gehört haben, wünsche ich mir, dass man sieht, dass es hier um eine Erneuerung geht, die das Projekt frisch in die heutige Zeit transportiert.

Gleichzeitig wiederveröffentlicht GRAND SLAM das Debutalbum Hit The Ground aus dem Jahr 2019, das aber noch mal ordentlich aufgearbeitet wurde. Dazu werde ich später ebenfalls noch einige Worte verlieren.

„Wheel Of Fortune“

Mit viel positiver Energie rockt der Opener „There Goes My Heart“ sich sofort ins Herz und sorgt für freudige Stimmung. Der flotte Beat und die schönen Melodien im Riffing sind wunderbar. Sänger Mike harmoniert fantastisch und so macht es einfach Spaß sich diesen Song anzuhören. Ja, und so geht es weiter und der Spaß wird nicht weniger. Ein prächtiger Rocksong jagt den nächsten und man kommt niemals in Versuchung die Skip-Taste zu drücken. Man fühlt sich recht schnell motiviert die tollen eingängigen Refrains mitzusingen und bei den Gitarrensolos die Luftgitarre zu spielen.

Ein bunter Mix

„Star Crossed Lovers“ hat ebenfalls Mitsingpotenital ohne Ende und ist vollgepumpt mit guter Laune. Ich nenne so etwas einen hitverdächtigen Ohrwurm. Manchmal liegt das Geheimnis auch in der Unkompliziertheit. Denn so nisten sich die wunderbaren Melodien in Verbindung mit den Lyrics sofort im Kopf ein. Es macht auch gar nichts, wenn GRAND SLAM mal das Tempo rausnehmen, denn die Songs grooven trotzdem, siehe z.B. „Come Together (in Harlem)“. „Trail Of Tears“ ist ein schöner Midtempo-Song, der mit knackigen Riffs und ein wenig Blues-Feeling gute Unterhaltung bietet.

Ein Sonderling auf dem Album ist der „Pirate Song“, der mal einen ganz anderen Auftritt hinlegt. Für mich ein wahrer Überraschungshit auf dem Album. Der Song hat ganz starke Country-Rock-Vibes! Es beginnt harmonisch in Begleitung von akustischen Gitarren. Es entsteht eine charmante Atmosphäre und anschließend wird langsam ein Spannungsbogen aufgebaut, bis der Song schließlich in den rockigen Angriff startet. Gekrönt von einem ausgedehnten fetzigen Gitarrensolo marschiert der Song kraftvoll weiter und glänzt später noch mit eleganten Chören. Sehr sehr stark!

Und es klingt auch wunderschön, wenn mit „Feeling Is Strong (Jo’s Song)“ eine Rundum-Sorglos-Ballade gespielt wird, denn sie passt einfach auf so ein Album und gehört dazu. Der Finaltrack und gleichzeitig Titeltrack ist ebenfalls eine Ballade, aber mit einer anderen Ausrichtung. Auch diese kann mit ein wenig Country-Feeling vollkommen überzeugen. Ein Song, wo man unter Freunden Arm in Arm liegt, schunkelt und locker flockig mitsingt. Das macht schon Laune!

Aber GRAND SLAM sind eben auch verdammt stark in den flotten Rocksongs. Wenn GRAND SLAM vollgetankt haben und mit voller Energie wie bei „Spitfire“ durchstarten, dann gibt es kein Halten merh. Der Song ist ein echter Burner und zündet mit einem ekstatischen Gitarrensolo ein brennendes Inferno.

Ich hatte eine grobe Arrangement-Idee für Spitfire, aber erst als wir alle im Studio zusammenkamen, fanden wir das wahre Gefühl für den Song und er verwandelte sich in das Monster, das er ist.

„Hit The Ground“ als Neuauflage

nochmals mit zu veröffentlichen ist ein genialer Schachzug, denn auch auf diesem Album finden sich hervorragende Songs, die den gleichen hohen Qualitätslevel besitzen. Der Opener „Gone Are The Days“ wirkt dabei noch recht entspannt, aber schon mit dem zweiten Song „Nineteen“ wird das musikalische Süppchen deutlich schärfer. Es war übrigens damals die letzte Solo-Single von Phil im Jahr 1985.

Ebenso finden sich hier schön atmosphärische Songs „Crime Rate“, die sich mit bezaubernden ruhigen Passagen hervorheben. Die kleinen netten Details mit Gitarre und Keybord sind ebenfalls nicht zu verachten. Ungewöhnlich finde ich, dass man einen Song, den man mit dem Bandnamen betitelt als Instrumentaltrack umsetzt. Viele Bands nutzen das eher, um eine bandeigene Hymne rauszuhauen. Ich stehe eigentlich nicht so auf rein instrumentale Tracks, aber es gibt Ausnahmen. Und der Rauschmeisser „Grand Slam“ gehört dazu. Lässt sich wirklich gut anhören und ist dank vieler guter Ideen und handwerklicher Kunst eine kurzweilige Angelegenheit.

In Gedenken an Phil Lynott

Besonders gefreut habe ich mich über die Coverversion von „Military Man“. Gary Moore und Phil Lynott haben diesen Song damals performt und dieses Lied landete damals 1985 auf dem Album „Run For Cover“ und ich fand es damals schon so unglaublich genial. (Der Song „Out In The Fields“ auf diesem Album war übrigens ebenfalls eine Kooperation der beiden Musiker.)

GRAND SLAM haben zum Glück nicht versucht das Original nur einfach nachzuspielen, denn das Original ist unerreichbar. Das Cover ist ein bärenstarke eigene Version des Songs, die sich noch so nah am Original befindet, so dass man es sofort erkennt, aber trotzdem hat die Band ihre GRAND SLAM-Vibes einfließen lassen. Und je öfter ich diesen Song höre, desto geiler finde ich ihn. Man hat dem Song fantastische Gitarrensolos geschenkt. Und tatsächlich erfährt der Song dann ein packendes Finale, dass mich total umgehauen hat. Alles in allem ehrt man damit das Original in jeglicher Hinsicht. Aber aus nostalgischen Gründen hier noch mal das geniale Duo Gary Moore und Phil Lynott, weil es soooo schön ist.

Fazit

Am Glücksrad voon GRAND SLAM kann man jederzeit drehen und wird immer einen Gewinn bekommen. Denn GRAND SLAM haben auf ihrem Glücksrad wahrliche keine Nieten, sondern nur starke Rocksongs. Mit unheimlich viel Gespür für ästhetische und mitreißende Songs begeistern GRAND SLAM auf ganzer Linie. „Wheel Of Fortune“ und „Hit The Ground“ sind ein perfektes Package und sorgt für allerbeste Unterhaltung. Beide Alben gehören in jede anständige Rock-Sammlung.

Fate is often not fair and sometimes even very cruel. The band GRAND SLAM (Facbook/Homepage) was also hit hard, as it was founded in 1984 by legend Phil Lynott (THIN LIZZY), but Phil died of heart attack in 1986 at the age of just 35. This meant that GRAND SLAM were only active for two years, as the shock was too deep for the remaining musicians and the story of GRAND SLAM was over before it had even really begun. Musical stories remained untold. After a long time, Laurence Archer took heart, brought the band back from its coma in 2016 and began to bring an old unfinished chapter to a close. Laurence comments:

I want everyone to see us as a new band… and for those who haven’t heard Grand Slam since 1984, I want them to see that this is a renewal that brings the project fresh into the present day.

At the same time, GRAND SLAM are re-releasing their debut album Hit The Ground from 2019, which has been given a proper makeover. I will also say a few words about this later.

„Wheel Of Fortune“

With a lot of positive energy, the opener „There Goes My Heart“ immediately rocks its way into your heart and creates a joyful atmosphere. The lively beat and the beautiful melodies in the riffing are wonderful. Singer Mike harmonizes fantastically and so it is simply fun to listen to this song. Yes, and so it goes on and the fun doesn’t get any less. One magnificent rock song follows the next and you are never tempted to press the skip button. You quickly feel motivated to sing along to the great, catchy choruses and play the air guitar during the guitar solos.

A colorful mix

„Star Crossed Lovers“ also has endless sing-along potential and is pumped full of good vibes. That’s what I call a catchy tune. Sometimes the secret lies in the simplicity. Because that’s how the wonderful melodies in combination with the lyrics immediately get stuck in your head. It doesn’t matter if GRAND SLAM slow down, because the songs still groove, see for example „Come Together (in Harlem)“. „Trail Of Tears“ is a nice mid-tempo song that offers good entertainment with crisp riffs and a little blues feeling.

An exceptional track on the album is the „Pirate Song“, which makes a completely different appearance. For me, it’s a real surprise hit on the album. The song has very strong country-rock vibes! It begins harmoniously accompanied by acoustic guitars. A charming atmosphere is created and then an arc of tension is slowly built up until the song finally launches into a rocking attack. Crowned by an extended groovy guitar solo, the song marches on powerfully and later shines with elegant choirs. Very, very strong!

And it also sounds wonderful when „Feeling Is Strong (Jo’s Song)“, an all-round carefree ballad, is played, because it simply fits on an album like this and belongs there. The final track, which is also the title track, is also a ballad, but with a different focus. It too is completely convincing with a little country feeling. A song where you lie arm in arm with friends, swaying and singing along in a relaxed and relaxed manner. It really puts you in a good mood!

But GRAND SLAM are also damn strong in the snappy rock songs. When GRAND SLAM have fueled up and take off with full energy like on „Spitfire“, there’s no stopping them. The song is a real burner and ignites a burning inferno with an ecstatic guitar solo.

I had a rough arrangement idea for Spitfire, but it wasn’t until we all got together in the studio that we found the true feel for the song and it turned into the monster that it is.

„Hit The Ground“ reissued

releasing it again is a brilliant move, because this album also contains excellent songs that have the same high level of quality. The opener „Gone Are The Days“ is still quite relaxed, but the second song „Nineteen“ is already a much sharper musical soup. Incidentally, this was Phil’s last solo single back in 1985.

There are also beautifully atmospheric songs „Crime Rate“, which stand out with enchanting quiet passages. I like that crispy bass. The nice little details with guitar and keybord are also very succesful. I find it unusual that a song titled with the band’s name is used as an instrumental track. Many bands tend to use this to create their own band anthem. I’m not really into purely instrumental tracks, but there are exceptions. And the raucous „Grand Slam“ is one of them. It’s really good to listen to and, thanks to a lot of good ideas and craftsmanship, it’s an entertaining affair.

In memory of Phil Lynott

I was particularly pleased about the cover version of „Military Man“. Gary Moore and Phil Lynott performed this song back then and it ended up on the 1985 album „Run For Cover“ and I thought it was so incredibly brilliant back then. (Incidentally, the song „Out In The Fields“ on this album was also a collaboration between the two awesome musicians).

Luckily GRAND SLAM didn’t just try to recreate the original, because the original is unattainable. The cover is a powerful version of the song, which is so close to the original that you can recognize it immediately, but the band has still incorporated their GRAND SLAM vibes. And the more I listen to this song, the more I love it. They’ve given the song fantastic guitar solos. And the song actually has a thrilling finale that totally blew me away. All in all, it honors the original in every respect. But for nostalgic reasons, here’s the brilliant duo Gary Moore and Phil Lynott again, because it’s soooo beautiful.

Conclusion

You can spin GRAND SLAM’s „Wheel Of Fortune“ at any time and you’ll always win. Because GRAND SLAM truly don’t have any rivets on their wheel of fortune, only strong rock songs. With an uncanny flair for aesthetic and rousing songs, GRAND SLAM inspire across the board. „Wheel Of Fortune“ and „Hit The Ground“ are a perfect package and provide the very best entertainment. Both albums belong in every good collection of rock music.

FRONT ROW WARRIORS (Facebook, Homepage) huldigen auf ihrem Album „Wheel Of Fortune“ dem klassischen Hardrock, der sich am Sound der 80’er Jahre anlehnt. Dabei verschwimmt manchesmal die Grenze zum melodischen Heavy Metal. Und ich möchte es direkt vorwegnehmen: Das Album ist absolut fantastisch und niemand würde glauben, dass es sich tatsächlich um ein Debütalbum handelt.

FRONT ROW WARRIORS liefern ein ganzes Album voller grandioser Songs, mit denen man in den 80’er Jahren definitiv große Arenen gefüllt hätten. Wir haben nun andere Zeiten, aber dieser Sound hat nach wie vor eine Magie, der man sich nicht entziehen kann. Schon gar nicht, wenn so eine charismatische Sängerin wie Elkie Gee am Mikro ihre vortreffliche Sangeskunst zum Besten gibt. Diese Stimme ist einfach der Hammer und ich könnte mir niemanden vorstellen, der die Songs besser performen könnte.

Ausgeklügelte Performance

Es bedarf nur der Vorstellung von dem Video zum Titeltrack „Wheel Of Fortune„, um die Fähigkeiten der Band zu demonstrieren. Tja, und das geilste daran ist, dass nicht nur Elkie mit ihrer geilen Voice den Sound super bedient, sondern auch alle anderen in der Band eine einwandfreie ausgeklügelte Performance abliefern. Ich bin jedenfalls so dermaßen angetan, dass ich diese Band auf alle Fälle gerne live sehen möchte. Das ausgezeichnete Songwriting und die unglaubliche Präsentation dessen mit diesen famosen Musikern ist einfach unbeschreiblich genial. Hört Euch dieses irre Keybordsolo in Verbindung mit dem grandiosen Gitarrensolo an!!! Und dieser Chorus ist einfach zum Niederknien!

Was will man mehr?

Na gar nix! Es ist ein rundum geiler Songmix! Hier wird ein erstklassiger Song nach dem anderen geliefert. Songs, die abrocken und Songs, die mit einer fetten Ladung Atmosphäre punkten wie zum Beispiel der Midtempo-Kracher „Fantastic“. Die Gitarren sind immer wieder ein wahrer Genuß und man kann sich gar nicht satt hören, egal ob es die griffigen Riffs oder die traumhaften Solos sind. Sehr wohlwollend nehme ich auch zur Kenntnis, dass der Sound super abgemischt wurde und sehr ausgewogen klingt. Alles wird schon herausgearbeitet, so dass jederzeit alles so zur Geltung kommt wie es sein muss.

Alles drin, alles dran!

Dann preschen FRONT ROW WARRIORS plötzlich mit „Deadly Sins“ hervor. Wow!!! Was für eine Rakete! Wer da keine Zuckungen bekommt und mitfiebert, der hat einfach keinen Sinn für mitreißenden hervorragend inszenierten Heavy Metal der klassischen Art. Es gibt einfach nichts, was man hier besser machen könnte. Der Sound packt einen und man lässt einen nicht mehr los. Die Keys in den Songs sind perfekt inszeniert und sorgen für die wichtige atmosphärische Verzierungen der Songs.

Das Wunderbare an dem Album ist, dass die Songs sehr individuell gestaltet sind. Man kann jeden Songs sofort wiedererkennen. „Hellinvaders“ ist z.B. ein echter Brecher mit stark sägenden Riffs und einem Gigantosolo des Leadgitarristen Sorin Badin. Da bleibt einem die Spucke weg! Und das passiert häufiger auf diesem Album.

Jeder Song wäre in den 80’er Jahren ein Hit gewesen. Und auch die gefühlvolle Seite hat die Band megamäßig drauf. Man nehme z.B. die Power Ballade „Love Is Not A Game“ mit seinem prächtigen Refrain. Und schwuppdiewupp erwischt man sich wieder einmal dabei wie man bei den geilen Solos die Luftgitarre bespielt. Der letzte Track ‚Wasted Life‘ begeistert mit ebenfalls mit einer emotionalen Ader. Ruhige Phasen plätschern schön sanft dahin, aber es es kommt auch Bewegung und Power in den Song. Ein episches Ende für ein ausgezeichnetes Album!

Fazit

FRONT ROW WARRIORS liefern mit „Wheel Of Fortune“ ein perfektes Album ab. Hier gibt es nichts zu kritisieren. Dabei offenbart sich ein buntes Fest individueller Songs, die mit viel Liebe zum Detail und einem geschmeidigen Händchen für atmosphärische Elemente komponiert worden sind. Darüber hinaus werden die Songs handwerklich von der gesamten Band grandios mit viel Können gerockt. Sängerin Elkie setzt dem Ganzen mit ihrer charismatischen Stimme und ihrer Sangeskunst die Krone auf.

‚Wheel Of Fortune‘ muss man lieben! Wirklich jeder Song ist ein Hit! Und deswegen ist es für mich ein absoluter Volltreffer und sahnt bei mir wohlverdiente 10 Punkte ab. Und es wird Zeit, dass diese Band viel mehr wohlverdiente Aufmerksamkeit bekommt. Ich jedenfalls fiebere dem ersten Konzert in meiner Region entgegen. Das werde ich mir nicht entgehen lassen!

FRONT ROW WARRIORS (Facebook, Homepage) pay homage to classic Hardrock on their album „Wheel Of Fortune“, which is based on the sound of the 80s. Sometimes the border to melodic Heavy Metal is crossed. And I would like to anticipate it directly: This album is absolutely fantastic and no one would believe that it is actually a debut album.

FRONT ROW WARRIORS deliver a whole album full of great songs that would have definitely filled big arenas in the 80’s. We have different times now, but this sound still has a magic you can’t escape. Especially not when such a charismatic singer like Elkie Gee shows her excellent singing skills. This voice is great and I could not imagine anyone who could perform the songs better.

Sophisticated performance

It only takes the video for the titletrack „Wheel Of Fortune“ to demonstrate the band’s abilities. Well, and the greatness doesn’t only come from Elkie, who brilliantly handles the sound with her brilliant voice, but also all the other bandmates deliver a flawless sophisticated performance. In any case, I am so impressed that I would definitely like to see this band live. The excellent songwriting and incredible presentation of it with these fabulous musicians is just indescribably awesome. Listen to that insane keyboard solo combined with the terrific guitar solo!!!! And this beautiful chorus is simply to die for!

What more could you want?

Nothing at all! It’s an all-around awesome song mix! Here one awesome song after the other is delivered. Songs that rock and songs that score with a dense atmosphere like the song „Fantastic“. The guitars are always a real pleasure and you can’t get enough of them, no matter if it’s the catchy riffs or the dreamlike solos. Very benevolently I also note that the sound was mixed flawless and sounds very balanced.

All in!

Then FRONT ROW WARRIORS suddenly burst out with „Deadly Sins“. Wow!!! What a rocket! If you don’t get excited, you just don’t have any sense for rousing rockmusic. There is simply nothing that could be done better here. This sound grabs you and you don’t let go. The keys in the songs are perfectly staged and provide the important atmospheric embellishments to the songs.

The wonderful thing about the album is that the songs are very individual. You can recognize each song immediately. „Hellinvaders“, for example, is a real breaker with strong sawing riffs and a gigantic solo by lead guitarist Sorin Badin. It’s enough to make you drool! And that happens more often on this album.

Every song would have been a hit in the 80’s. The band also shows a superb emotional side. Take for example the power ballad „Love Is Not A Game“ with its magnificent chorus. And you catch yourself many times playing the air guitar during the awesome solos.The last track „Wasted Life“ also inspires with an emotional vein. Quiet phases ripple along gently, but there is also movement and power in the song. An epic end for an excellent album!

Conclusion

FRONT ROW WARRIORS deliver a perfect album with „Wheel Of Fortune“. There is nothing to criticize here. It reveals a colorful feast of individual songs that have been composed with great attention to detail and a supple knack for atmospheric elements. In addition, the songs are rocked with great craftsmanship by the entire band. Singer Elkie puts the crown on the whole thing with her charismatic voice.

You have to love ‚Wheel Of Fortune‘! Really every song is a hit! And that’s why „Wheel Of Fortune“ is an absolute blast for me and gets a well-deserved 10 points. And it’s about time that this band gets much more well-deserved attention. I for one am looking forward to the first concert in my region. I will not miss it!
