Dieser Name setzt sich aus den griechischen Gottheiten Thanatos (Tod) und der lieblichen Begierde (Eros) zusammen. THANATEROS ( Homepage / Facebook) begannen Ende der 90´er und der Sound war von irish-keltischen Folk Anteilen geprägt. Man tourte damals mit den Größen der deutschen dunklen Gothik- und Darkwaveszene wie beispielsweise TANZWUT, LETZTE INSTANZ oder SUBWAY TO SALLY. 2008 waren sie sogar mit FIDDLER´s GREEN, TRISTANIA und FINNTROLL unterwegs. Trotz des Erfolges löste Ben Richter die Band Anfang 2010 auf und gründete die deutsche Metalband PHOSPHOR. Doch alte Liebe rostet nicht und so veröffentlichten sie nach einer Wiederauferstehung 2019 „Insomnia“ und haben das Ganze noch mal in Form einer Special Edition als Re-Release am 13.11.2020 herausgebracht (Review).

„On Fragile Wings“

heißt nun das neue Album, welches ab heute erhältlich ist. Den Hörer erwartet dunkler melodischer Metalsound, der von einer Violine begleitet wird. So weit hat sich nichts gegenüber „Insomia“ verändert. „Burn“ eröffnet das Album nach dem instrumentalen Intro. Der trabende Song schmeichelt sich angenehm ins Ohr. Ein kleines nettes Gitarrensolo verfeinert das Ganze und das Finale legt dann noch mal ne Schippe drauf.

„Coven Of The Drowned“ war die erste Singleauskopplung. Ein atmosphärischer Song, dem die grundsätzliche melancholische Ausstrahlung von THANATEROS anhaftet. Der Song glänzt mit wunderschönen Meldodien und die dunkle warme Stimme von Ben ist ein essentieller Bestandteil der ganzen musikalischen Erscheinung. Ein echt schöner Song!

Ein richtiger Klopper

ist der Song „Passengers“. Erinnert mich an den Song „Graken“ vom letzen Album.. Dies ist nämlich auch eindeutig der Song, der am meisten mit Metal geimpft wurde. Und für mich ist dies mein absolutes Highlight auf dem Album. Warum? Ja, nicht nur, weil es der härteste Sound auf dem Album ist. Es gefällt mir eben, wenn Bands mal aus ihrem Käfig springen und sich mal außerhalb austoben. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass sich die Band manchmal zu sehr zurückhält anstatt mal ordentlich die Sau rauszulassen. Der Song „Passengers“ beweist, dass das möglich ist. Ich bin der Meinung, dass die Männer das Prinzip von „Passengers“ für mehr Songs beherzigen sollten. Das würde der Spannung im Gesamtkonzept meiner Meinung nach gut tun.

Ansonsten ohne Ecken und Kanten

Das finde ich schade. Denn oft plätschern die Songs so vor sich hin ohne einen bleibenden Eindruck zu hinterlassen. „We Are The Ravens“ ist auch ein Beispiel dafür, wo ich das Gefühl habe, dass man einen Ausbruchsversuch (ab Minute 04:20) unternimmt, aber im Ansatz stecken bleibt.

Bei „Nothing Lasts Forever“ leitet Ben den Song mit seiner sehr dunklen voluminösen Stimme ein. Das hat mich sogar direkt an den großartigen Leonard Coen erinnert. Am Ende des Songs erklingt diese Stimme nochmals. „Fading“ packt den Hörer mit finsteren Passagen, wo inmitten der harmonischen Melodien mal ein wenig die Metalkeule geschwungen wird.

Fazit

„On Fragile Wings“ ist ein solides Album geworden, reicht aber für mich nicht an den Vorgänger „Insomnia“ heran. Es sind allesamt solide Songs, doch ich hätte mir gewünscht, dass es in eine andere Richtung geht. THANATEROS beherrschen diese mystische Auroa mit tollen Melodien sehr gut, doch insgesamt fehlen mir die Ecken und Kanten auf dem Album. Beim Song „Passengers“ sprengen sie diese Harmoniefesseln und zeigen eine knackige Härte und kräftigen Biss.

Auch die Produktion gefällt mir nicht so gut wie beim letzten Album. Es klingt mir zu dumpf und weich. Der Sound auf „Insomnia“ klingt für mich organischer, soll heißen, dass die Instrumente und Gesang klarer und greifbarer sind als bei dem aktuellen Album.

So bleiben THANATEROS für mich hinter ihren Möglichkeiten. Ich mage diese Band sehr und ich hätte mir eine andere Entwicklung gewünscht. Natürlich sind es immer Geschmacksfragen und bestimmt werden einige anderer Meinung sein. Also hört doch auf jeden Fall rein und bildet Euch selber ein Urteil.

At that time they toured with the greats of the German dark gothic and darkwave scene like TANZWUT, LETZTE INSTANZ or SUBWAY TO SALLY. In 2008 they even toured with FIDDLER’s GREEN, TRISTANIA and FINNTROLL. Despite the success, Ben Richter disbanded the band in early 2010 and founded the German metal band PHOSPHOR. Old love never really disappears and so after a resurrection they released „Insomnia“ in 2019 and brought the whole thing out again in the form of a special edition as a re-release on 13.11.2020 (review).

„On Fragile Wings“

is the name of the new album, which is available from today. The listener can expect dark melodic metal sound, which is accompanied by a violin. So far nothing has changed compared to „Insomia“. „Burn“ opens the album after the instrumental intro. The trotting song pleasantly caresses the ear. A small nice guitar solo refines the whole thing and the finale then puts once again a notch on it.

„Coven Of The Drowned“ was the first single release. An atmospheric song, which adheres to the basic melancholic aura of THANATEROS. The song shines with beautiful melodies and the dark warm voice of Ben is an essential part of the whole musical appearance. A really beautiful song!

A real cracker

is the song „Passengers“. It reminds me of the song „Graken“ from the last album. This is also clearly the song that was most inoculated with Metal. And for me this is my absolute highlight on the album. Why? Yes, not only because it is the hardest sound on the album. I just like it when bands jump out of their cage for and let off steam outside of it. I have the feeling that the band sometimes holds back too much instead of letting off steam. The song „Passengers“ proves that this is possible. I think the men should take the principle of „Passengers“ to heart for more songs. That would do the tension in the overall concept good in my opinion.

Too much harmony

I find that a pity. Because often the songs ripple along without leaving a lasting impression. „We Are The Ravens“ is also an example of this, where I have the feeling that one makes an attempt to break out (from minute 04:20), but gets stuck in the approach.

In „Nothing Lasts Forever“ Ben introduces the song with his very dark voluminous voice. This reminded me directly of the great Leonard Coen. At the end of the song this voice sounds again. „Fading“ grabs the listener with dark passages, where in the midst of the harmonic melodies a little bit of the metal club is swung.

Conclusion

„On Fragile Wings“ has become a solid album, but for me it doesn’t reach the predecessor „Insomnia“. They are all solid songs, but I would have liked it to go in a different direction. THANATEROS master this mystical aura with great melodies very well, but overall I miss hardness and sharpness. In the song „Passengers“ they break these harmony shackles and show a crisp hardness and powerful bite.

I also don’t like the production as much as on the last album. It sounds too dull and soft to me. The sound on „Insomnia“ sounds more organic, meaning that the instruments and vocals are clearer and more tangible than on the current album.

So THANATEROS remain for me behind their possibilities. I like this band very much and I would have liked a different development. Of course, it is always a matter of taste and certainly some will have a different opinion. So listen to it in any case and form your own opinion.

Modern GOTHIK-Rock-Sound

Despite the success Ben Richter broke up the band in 2010 and founded the German metal band PHOSPHOR.

After a long, long time the past catches up with him again. The call of THANATEROS echoed inside him all the time and so he let his old band resurrect. With „Insomnia“ they came out in 2019 and re-released the whole thing as a special edition on 13.11.2020. On it they have banished again four selected instrumental bonus tracks. It is of course questionable whether you need this special edition if you already own the album. But since the album had not yet found its way to ‚metal-heads.de‘, this is now a welcome occasion to dedicate ourselves to this record.

No Irish-Folk anymore

The big difference to the albums of old times is the not so strong folkloric presence. Fortunately, the violin was not abandoned. I make no secret of the fact that I have a preference for classical instruments, especially the strings. And I think it’s a dream when they enter into a skilful symbiosis with rock and metal music. The violin can dance on a tightrope between the worlds of sadness and happiness and creates emotions in its own very special way.

„Cthulhu Rising“

is the current single release of the album. So what can you expect from THANATEROS of the modern era? A lot! I can’t remember having heard anything like this before. This mixture of dark (gothic) rock with a penchant for metal in combination with the violin is really impressive.

„Cthulhu Rising“ reveals a good portion of toughness with catchy hooklines that stick immediately. The violin is perfectly integrated into the song and gives it an esoteric aura. The charismatic and sometimes mystical vocals of Ben additionally condense the atmosphere in a fabulous way.

The mysterious journey

through the occult world exerts a great fascination, not least because the sound has many facets. The palette ranges from restrained atmospheric passages (e.g. „Black Tide“) to soulful yearning moments (e.g. „Waermetod“) to aggressive rousing outbursts like the song „Graken“, which is spurred on with fast riffing and whipped forward. Then again TAHNATEROS enchants us with the song

„When Worlds Collide“,

which shows itself from a more intense dark side. The more dominant violin playing makes the song a bit more folky. The song is not so hard, but he dives deeper into a dark occult world.

An epochal record

deliver THANATEROS and with „Insomnia“ they have created a dreamlike world floating surrounded by a magical atmosphere.

Already the touching start with the song „Wait For Me“ inspires with its fantastic melodies. This violin playing completely captivated me and succeeded in creating an epic sad and at the same time beautiful component. THANATEROS give the listener an intense journey through their world.

Nach langer langer Zeit holte ihn die Vergangenheit wieder ein. Der Ruf von THANATEROS hallte immerzu in seinem Inneren und so ließ Ben seine alte Band wieder auferstehen. Mit „Insomnia“ kamen sie 2019 auf den Markt und haben das Ganze noch mal in Form einer Special Edition als Re-Release am 13.11.2020 herausgebracht. Darauf hat man noch mal vier ausgewählte instrumentale Bonus-Tracks gebannt. Es sei mal dahingestellt, ob man diese Special Edition benötigt, wenn man schon im Besitz des Albums ist. Aber da das Album 2019 noch nicht den Weg zu `metal-heads.de´ gefunden hatte, ist dies nun ein willkommener Anlass uns dieser Scheibe zu widmen.

Irish-Folk adé

Der große Unterschied zu den Alben alter Zeit ist die nicht mehr so starke folkloristische Präsenz. Glücklicherweise hat man auf die Violine nicht verzichtet. Ich mache keinen Hehl daraus, dass ich eine Vorliebe für klassische Instrumente habe, vor allem für die Streicher. Und ich finde es traumhaft, wenn diese eine gekonnte Symbiose mit der Rock- und Metalmusik eingehen. Dieses Instrument kann auf einem Drahtseil zwischen den Welten der Traurigkeit und Fröhlichkeit tanzen und erzeugt Emotionen auf seine eigene ganz spezielle Weise.

„Cthulhu Rising“

ist die aktuelle Auskopplung des Albums. Was darf man also von THANATEROS der Neuzeit erwarten? Eine Menge! Ich kann mich nicht erinnern etwas derartiges schon mal gehört zu haben. Diese Mischung von dunklem (Gothik-) Rock mit Hang zum Metal in Verbindung mit der Violine ist wirklich beeindruckend.

„Cthulhu Rising“ offenbart eine gute Portion Härte mit eingängigen Hooklines, die sofort hängenbleiben. Die Violine ist perfekt in den Song eingebunden und verleiht ihm eine esoterische Aura. Der charismatische und manchmal mystische Gesang von Ben verdichtet die Atmosphäre zusätzlich auf fabelhafte Weise.

Die geheimnisvolle Reise

durch die okkulte Welt übt eine tolle Faszination aus, nicht zuletzt deswegen, weil der Sound viele Facetten aufzuweisen hat. Die Palette erstreckt sich von zurückhaltenden stimmungsvollen Passagen (z.B.“Black Tide“) hinüber zu gefühlvollen sehnsüchtigen Momenten (z.B.“Waermetod“) bis hin zu aggressiven mitreißenden Ausbrüchen wie beispielsweise beim Song „Graken“, der mit schnellem Riffing angestachelt und nach vorne gepeitscht wird. Dann wiederum verzaubert uns THANATEROS mit dem Song

„When Worlds Collide“,

der sich von einer intensiveren düsteren Seite zeigt. Das dominantere Violinenspiel sorgt dafür, so dass der Song etwas folkiger auftritt. In Sacher Härte rudert er ein wenig zurück, taucht dabei aber tiefer in eine dunkle okkulte Welt ein.

Ein epochales Album

liefern THANATEROS ab und haben mit „Insomnia“ eine traumhafte Welt erschaffen, die von einer magischen Atmosphäre umgeben ist. Schon alleine der ergreifende Start mit dem Song „Wait For Me“ begeistert mit seinen phantastischen Melodien. Das Violinenspiel hat mich völlig in seinen Bann gezogen und erzeugt eine epische traurigschöne Komponente. THANATEROS schenken dem Hörer ein intensive Reise durch ihre Welt.
