Eine Ode an die Melancholie

MH: Trotz der melancholischen Grundstimmung des Albums existieren auch Momente, die fast fröhlich wirken und positive Vibes versprühen. Auch die Texte sind alles andere als dystopischer Natur.

Bist Du grundsätzlich ein positiv denkender Mensch?

Coldun: Ja – würde ich sagen. Zumindest bin ich das geworden. Ich habe bisher ein Leben verbracht, was in einem guten Mittelfeld der Polaritäten und Extreme, die man auf diesem Planeten erfahren kann, liegt – wohl eher tendenziell auf Sonnenseite gelagert. Das heißt ich bin weder in einem Slum noch in einer Villa geboren und aufgewachsen.

Dennoch oder vielleicht gerade deshalb kann man sich früher oder später mit den Fragen des Lebens beschäftigen und bemerkt immer wiederkehrende Krisenthemen und Sinnfindungsphasen. Persönlich schätzt man seine Probleme dabei in besonders schwierigen Momenten immer auch als wirklich erdrückend ein, auch wenn es nur Klassiker wie Beziehungskrisen sind und nicht zum 10ten Mal in der Woche ums nackte Überleben geht, wie dies vielleicht an anderen Stellen der Erde ist.

Das Unvermeidliche

Coldun: Irgendwann dämmern einem dann die dahinterliegenden Mechanismen und man beschäftigt sich mit dem Sinn dieser Dinge – so ging es mir zumindest. Und so kam ich auch langsam zu dem Punkt wo ich erkannte, dass wirklich alles zu etwas gut ist und manche Entwicklungen nur durch körperlichen oder geistigen Schmerz angeregt werden können. Ich erkannte dann auch recht bald, dass diese Erkenntnis im Prinzip ein alter Hut ist, der seit tausenden von Jahren aufgeschrieben und weitergeben wird und von nach wie vor lächerlich wenigen Menschen zur Kenntnis genommen wird. Und selbst das zur Kenntnis nehmen ist nicht viel wert, wenn es nicht verinnerlicht oder am besten eben vorher durch eigene Gedanken und Erfahrungen gepflanzt wurde. Kurz um – in mir ist über die Jahre eine Art Urvertrauen gewachsen, religiöse Menschen nennen das dann Gottvertrauen – das Wort ist egal, es ist das gleiche.

Sinneswahrnehmungen

MH: Hast Du das Gefühl, dass viele Menschen den Sinn für das Schöne und Positive im Leben verloren haben?

Coldun: Das kann schon sein – zumindest in Ihrer aktuellen Lage. Das Leben in einem industrialisierten Land dieser Tage ist so eingerichtet, dass sich Menschen eher mit Konsum und Karrieren den Alltag zuballern und wenig Zeit für Nichtstun und freie Köpfe bleibt. Langeweile gilt als etwas Negatives. Mir geht es selbst auch noch oft so. Dabei entstehen gerade in langweiligen Zeiten Räume für Gedanken nach innen. Damit könnte es losgehen – aber spätestens nach der Werbeunterbrechung ist auch schon wieder Schluss und man kann sich wieder ablenken lassen. Kurzfristig erscheint das als ein positives Leben mit schön verdrängten Problemen und ohne tiefergehenden Erkenntnisgewinn. Langfristig könnte man aber merken, dass irgendwie was fehlt, dass man nichts wirklich Verlässliches von wahrem Wert und als immer wirkender Anker in seinem Leben hat. Aber das schöne ist – es ist nie zu spät!

Thema Tod

Der Tod ist ein Thema, welches Ihr auf dem Album mit dem Song „The Forest And The Soul“ aufgegriffen und auch ein Video dazu veröffentlich habt.

MH: Ist der Tod ein Thema, dass Dich persönlich beschäftigt?

Coldun: Ja, aber nicht mehr oder weniger wie andere Themen auch. Der Tod integriert sich als normaler Teil des Rades in das Gesamtbild und ist aus meiner Sicht weniger wichtig, interessant oder erschreckend, wie wir das in unseren Fleischsäcken für den Augenblick des aktuellen Lebens halten.

MH: Die meisten Menschen verdrängen den Tod und haben Angst sich damit auseinanderzusetzen, weil der Tod für sie das endgültige Ende bedeutet? Du siehst das etwas anders, nicht wahr?

Glaubst Du an ein Leben nach dem Tod oder gar an eine Wiedergeburt?

Coldun: Ja – an beides. Nichts anderes würde für mich einen Sinn ergeben. Nicht, dass es nun überhaupt nicht vorstellbar wäre, dass es eben wirklich auch gar keinen Sinn gibt – das könnte schon auch sein, aber mein Gefühl sagt mir etwas Anderes.

Reisen, Kulturen, Religion und Inspiration

MH: Es heißt, dass Du viele Erfahrungen auf Reisen um die Welt gemacht und Inspirationen gesammelt hast. In welche Länder und Bereiche hat es Dich bisher verschlagen und wohin würdest Du gerne noch reisen wollen?

Coldun: Es ist weniger die Quantität als die Qualität bisheriger Ausflüge, die mich beeindruckt und weiter geprägt haben. Hauptsächlich ums Mittelmeer und Nordafrika hat es mich dabei gezogen. Dabei interessieren mich neben dem schönen Gefühl alleine woanders zu sein auch immer die vergangenen Zeiten. Ich sage dazu meist, dass ich mir wieder ausschließlich tote Steine anschaue. Das erscheint vielen so langweilig, dass sie von weiteren Fragen zur Reise absehen.

MH: Erzähle uns doch von Deinen wertvollsten bzw. bemerkenswertesten Erfahrungen bei Deinen Reisen um die Welt und wie haben diese Erfahrungen Einfluss auf die Musik genommen?

Coldun: So viel auf die Kacke will ich damit nun auch nicht hauen. Viele Dinge passieren halt beim reisen – auch anderen. Es gab aber schon die ein oder andere Anekdote. Egal ob mit Menschen oder mit Erlebnissen ohne Menschen.

Unbemerkte Bettbekanntschaften

In einem runtergekommenen Motel an einer Hauptstraße außerhalb einer Ortschaft auf Rhodos habe ich zum Beispiel einmal 4 englische Rentner kennenlernen dürfen, die sich bei mir zum Frühstück entschuldigten (es war kein wirkliches Frühstück – es war im Prinzip selbst für mich fast ungenießbar, die Vermieterin hatte es auf einer einzigen mobilen Herdplatte draußen selbst gemacht), weil Ihr Freund, der geistig behindert war, die Nacht bei mir kurz im Bett mit geschlafen hätte. Sie waren sehr dann überrascht, weil ich davon nichts mitbekommen hatte und weil meine Tür, die direkt zur Straße lag, offen stand die ganze Nacht.

Ich hatte sie offen gelassen, damit sie wenigstens nicht noch kaputt geht, wenn jemand einbrechen will. Na ja, der Opa hatte sich in der Nacht betrunken verlaufen und gedacht, dass es sein Zimmer wäre. Bis ihn dann seine Kumpels holten. Solche Dinge und die Gespräche darum sind interessant und lehrreich (Die vier Männer waren seit der Schulzeit Freunde und fuhren nun nur deshalb Jahr für Jahr in den Urlaub zusammen, weil einer von Ihnen durch einen Unfall diese Behinderung bekam und sonst nichts weiter im Leben hatte).

Alte Steine

Viele Erlebnisse habe ich aber allein, also ohne Menscheinwirkung, erfahren, die sehr beeindruckend waren und mich lange beschäftigt haben. Dazu muss man aber gerade in Ägypten ein wenig mit den altertümlichen Stätten vertraut sein – dann ahnt man wie es sein könnte, wenn man zum Beispiel ganz allein im Serapeum von Sakkara ist (eine riesige unterirdische Grabanlage mit vielen der größten und perfektesten schwarzen Granitsarkophage der Welt). Selbst der Wärter, der mir aufschloss und mich rein ließ, schloss die Tür hinter sich wieder und haute ab (Das Serapeum war für Besucher in dieser Zeit generell nicht zugänglich, es war sowieso kein Tourist weit und breit – es brauchte also etwas Bakschisch dafür). Das alte Ägypten ist für mich eh eine Welt für sich. Wenn man vor 5000 Jahren alten Monumenten steht die absolut modern wirken, stellt man sich schon so manche Frage.

Faszination ägyptische Mythologie

MH: Beispielsweise finden beim ersten Song „Gran Sund Ritual“ orientalische Klänge Einzug und der Song „Hail Out To Thebes“ erwähnt die Tempelanlage in Karnak (Ägypten). Speziell wird der prächtige Tempel zu Ehren des `Amun-Re´ im Lied erwähnt. Was hat dies für eine Bedeutung? Bist Du ein Fan der ägyptischen Kultur?

Coldun: Ja – vor einigen Jahren bin ich auch nach Luxor gereist und habe direkt im Ort einige Zeit verbracht. Es war aber in einer Phase wo aufgrund der Unruhen so gut wie keine Touristen dort waren. Nachts fuhren ständig Mopeds mit 3-5 Jugendlichen drauf und mit Kalaschnikows im Arm umher. Das ganze Land war durch die Krise sehr betroffen, da die Tourismusgelder fehlten. In dieser Zeit habe ich mir intensiv den Karnak-Komplex angeschaut – mehrere Tage nur diesen einen Tempelkomplex. Abends habe ich dann am Nil sinniert – es war unvergleichlich.

MH: Oder gibt es noch andere Kulturen oder religiöse Ansichten, die es Dir besonders angetan haben? Bist Du generell ein religiöser und/oder spiritueller Mensch?

Das Dilemma der Religionen

Coldun: Ich fühle mich generell keiner Konfession zugehörig. Ich habe mich grob mit den großen Religionen befasst und konnte bei allen einiges finden was mich ansprach und genauso auch einiges was ich oftmals regelrecht abstoßend finde. Bei den 3 großen Religionen aus dem Nahen Osten, welche ja recht eng miteinander verwandt sind, hat mich vor allem die recht klar zu erkennende Pervertierung der ursprünglichen Weisheiten durch menschliche Neigungen, Fehlungen und Wirrungen enttäuscht. Wer zum Beispiel in der katholischen Kirche und seinem Machtapparat und Verfehlungen der letzten Jahrhunderte, die größere Nähe zum Satanismus, aber auf jeden Fall zum Sadismus als zur christlichen Lehre wie zum Beispiel der Bergpredigt, nicht sieht, muss schon tief drin stecken – in der Infoblase, wie man heute sagt.

Manches gefällt mir zum Beispiel an buddhistischen Ansichten. Zum Beispiel diese Gelassenheit den weltlichen Dingen gegenüber. Oftmals wird das von uns westlichen Heilsbringern ja mit Arroganz oder auch Gleichgültigkeit den Problemen anderer gegenüber verwechselt – damit hat das aber nichts zu tun.

Leider sieht man heutzutage in den vom Buddhismus und Hinduismus geprägten Ländern ähnliche Verwerfungen zwischen eigener Lehre und gelebter Realität. Man lässt Auswüchse perversester Art zu, ohne das ein innerer Kompass wenigstens die schlimmsten Ausbrüche korrigieren würde – zumindest auf Systemebene, auf persönlicher Ebene ist das natürlich differenzierter.

Alles in allem menschelt es sehr, wenn wir die großen Religionen und die aktuellen Auslegungen anschauen. Psychologisch ist das alles sehr interessant und über uns Menschen kann man dabei viel lernen – über Gott allerdings nur wenig.

Komplexität des Albums und neue Wege

MH: Würdest Du mit der Aussage übereinstimmen, dass das neue Album komplexer klingt als die Alben davor?

Coldun: Ja – es ist vielschichtiger. Gerade die härteren und gitarrenbetonteren Parts sind häufiger und machen es komplexer.

MH: Hat es was damit zu tun, dass es sich bei COLDUN nicht mehr nur um ein Soloprojekt handelt, sondern auf eine ganze Formation herangewachsen ist?

Coldun: Absolut! Die Entwicklungen im Klang und den Songstrukturen von „Collapsing Polarities“ zu „Grand Sun Ritual“ sind ganz klar auf den Umschwung vom Solo-Projekt zu einer Bandstruktur zurückzuführen.

Gerade im Bereich des Drummings und der Gitarren ist das ganz deutlich. Mir gefällt diese Entwicklung sehr. Auch bei den einzelnen Liedern ist bei 4 der 7 Lieder der Einfluss der anderen Musiker ganz deutlich, da diese als Band geschrieben wurden. Lediglich 3 Lieder stammen allein aus meiner Feder.

Außergewöhnlich

MH: Es kommen Stilmittel zum Einsatz, die nicht der Standard sind. Ich denke da insbesondere an das Saxophon und die Hammond Orgel.

Wie kam es zu der Idee mit dem Saxophonsolo von Markus Bär bei dem Song „Gran Sun Ritual“?

Coldun: Das schwirrte mir schon einige Jahre im Kopf herum. Als dann dieses Lied entstand und sich darin diese Stelle offenbarte, war der Gedanke schnell gekeimt, dass genau dort ein Saxophon-Solo hingehört – und zwar keins aus der Konserve, sondern ein echtes, live eingespielt. Das sich da im weiteren Freundeskreis ein Saxophon-Spieler fand, setzte dem ganzen dann die Krone auf – das hatte ich anfangs nicht gedacht.

MH: Was verbindest Du mit der Hammond Orgel? Warum ist sie ein wichtiger Teil von „Gran Sund Ritual“ geworden?

Coldun: Der Klang von einer Hammond Orgel gefällt mir schon sehr lange, gerade in Kombination mit Gitarren. Sicher spielen da auch die alten Rocklegenden wie Deep Purple bis hin zu Whitesnake eine Rolle, die ich gern höre. Der Klang verleiht der Musik so einen schwebenden Eindruck und ein dichtes Klanggefüge. Durch die Rotary Speaker ergibt sich außerdem der interessante Stereo-Effekt – ich finds einfach richtig geil.

Ruhepol

MH: Es passiert sehr viel in den Songs. „Stories Untold“ sticht im ganzen Repertoire hervor, da dieser als einziger Song einfach und zurückhaltend ist. Die Akustikgitarre bildet das Grundgerüst zusammen mit dem sanften Gesang. Später gesellen sich nur noch Drums und E-Gitarre dazu ohne den ruhigen balladesken Grundtenor zu verändern.

MH: Was war der Gedanke bei dieser Art der Interpretation?

Coldun: Dieser ruhige Song war mir sehr wichtig, gerade als Kontrapunkt auf dem Album. Solche einfachen, klar instrumentierten und ruhigen Songs gefallen mir sehr. Sie wirken im Aufbau eines Albums als Ruhepol und Verschnaufpause und sind damit nicht nur für sich, sondern auch für das ganze Album wichtig.

Aus der Hand geben

MH: Wie ich erfahren habe, wurde das Album in England (Priory Recording Studios Birmingham von Greg Chandler) abgemischt und gemastert.

Was war das für ein Gefühl diese Sache das erste Mal aus den Händen zu geben? Was hast Du empfunden, als Du das erste Mal die finale Version des Albums gehört hast?  

Coldun: Aufgenommen haben wir noch bei uns in Sachsen – eine sehr lange Zeit hindurch über mehrere Jahre bis es irgendwann geschafft war und ich wirklich mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden war. Dann haben wir das Material zu Greg Chandler nach Birmingham ins Priory Studio geschickt, der es gemixt und gemastert hat.

Es stimmt – es war das erste mal überhaupt, dass ich eine CD, auf der ich maßgeblich beteiligt bin, nicht selbst gemischt habe. Beim Mastering habe ich schon vorher ab und an mit anderen zusammengearbeitet unter anderem auch mit Dan Swanö. Daher hatte ich auch etwas Angst, ob der Schritt richtig war. Nach kurzer Zeit hörte ich aber schon, dass er absolut richtig war. Nach den vielen Jahren Arbeit an dem Album hatte ich keine Ohren mehr für ein frisches Mixing und auch meine Technik und Fähigkeiten dafür waren nicht mehr zeitgemäß. Greg Chandler hat an der richtigen Stelle die Sache übernommen und mit unabhängigen Ohren die richtige Mischung eingestellt.

Wir sind mit dem Ergebnis alle zufrieden und ich würde es das nächste Mal auch wieder so machen.

Interview english

COLDUN have accomplished a fantastic work with their album „Gran Sun Ritual“. I have described the album as a transcendental experience that takes the listener on a spiritual journey, revealing an emotional depth and complexity (Review ). I was eager to dive into this depth and learn more about the album, its creation and COLDUN itself. Together with COLDUN as the head of the formation, very interesting and exciting insights behind the album and his person have emerged. This should not be missed in any case!

An ode to melancholy

MH: Despite the melancholic mood of the album, there are also moments that seem almost cheerful and give off positive vibes. The lyrics are also anything but dystopian in nature.

Are you basically a positive thinking person?

Coldun: Yes – I would say. At least that’s what I’ve become. I have spent a life so far, which lies in a good middle field of the polarities and extremes, which one can experience on this planet – probably rather tends to be stored on the sunny side. That means I was born and raised neither in a slum nor in a mansion.

Nevertheless, or maybe just because of that, sooner or later you can deal with the questions of life and notice recurring crisis topics and phases of finding meaning. Personally one estimates his problems thereby in particularly difficult moments always also as really crushing, even if they are only classics like relationship crises and not for the 10th time in the week around the naked survival goes, as this is perhaps in other places of the earth.

Learning through pain?

Coldun: At some point, the underlying mechanisms dawn on you and you deal with the meaning of these things – at least that’s how it was for me. And so I also slowly came to the point where I recognized that really everything is good for something and some developments can only be stimulated by physical or mental pain. I realized then also quite soon that this realization is an old principle, which is written down and passed on for thousands of years and is still realized by only some ridiculously few people. And even the taking note is not worth much if it was not internalized or planted just best before by own thoughts and experiences. In short – over the years a kind of basic trust has grown in me, religious people then call it trust in God – the word doesn’t matter, it’s the same.

Sensory Perceptions

MH: Do you feel that many people have lost the sense of beauty and positivity in life?

Coldun: That may be so – at least in their current situation. Life in an industrialized country these days is set up in such a way that people tend to bombard their daily lives with consumption and careers, leaving little time for idleness and free minds. Boredom is considered something negative. I often feel that way myself. But it is precisely in boring times that spaces for inward thoughts are created. It could start with that – but at the latest after the commercial break it’s already over again and you can be distracted again.

In the short term, this appears to be a positive life with nicely suppressed problems and no deeper gain in knowledge. In the long term, however, you might notice that something is somehow missing, that you have nothing really reliable of true value as an anchor in your life. But the beautiful thing is – it’s never too late!

The death

Death is a theme that you have taken up on the album with the song „The Forest And The Soul“ and also released a video for it.

MH: Is death a topic that concerns you personally?

Coldun: Yes, but not more or less like other topics. Death integrates itself as a normal part of the wheel. In the overall picture from my point of view is this less important, interesting or frightening as our current life, that that we spend in our fleshy shells.

MH: Most people repress death and are afraid to deal with it because death means the final end for them. You see it a little differently, don’t you?

Do you believe in life after death or even in rebirth?

Coldun: Yes – to both. Nothing else would make sense for me. Maybe there is also really no sense at all – that could also be, but my feeling tells me something else.

Travel, cultures, religion and inspiration

MH: It is said that you have gained a lot of experience and inspiration while traveling around the world. Which countries and areas have you been to so far and where would you like to travel to?

Coldun: It’s not so much the quantity as the quality of previous trips that have impressed and shaped me. I’ve mainly been drawn to the Mediterranean and North Africa. Besides the beautiful feeling of being alone somewhere else, I’m always interested in the past times. I usually say to it that I look at dead stones again exclusively. This seems so boring to many that they refrain from further questions about the trip.

MH: Why don’t you tell us about your most valuable or remarkable experiences during your travels around the world and how did these experiences influence your music?

Coldun: I don’t want to show off like that. Many things just happen when traveling – even to others. But there was already the one or other anecdote. Whether they are experiences with or without people.

Unnoticed bed guest

In a run-down motel on a main road outside a village on Rhodes, for example, I once met 4 English pensioners who apologized to me for breakfast (it was not a real breakfast – it was in principle almost inedible even for me, the landlady had made it herself on a single mobile hotplate outside), because their friend, who was mentally disabled, would have slept the night with me briefly in bed. They were very then surprised because I had not noticed anything about it and because my door, which was directly to the street, was open the whole night.

I had left it open so that at least it wouldn’t break if someone tried to break in. Well, the grandpa had gotten lost in the night, drunk, and thought it was his room. Until his buddies came to get him. Such things and the conversations around them are interesting and instructive (the four men had been friends since their school days and now only went on vacation together year after year because one of them got this disability through an accident and had nothing else in life).

Old stones

However, I have experienced many experiences alone, i.e. without the effect of men, which were very impressive and kept me busy for a long time. To do this, however, you have to be a little familiar with the ancient sites, especially in Egypt – then you get an idea of what it might be like, for example, when you are all alone in the Serapeum of Sakkara (a huge underground tomb complex with many of the largest and most perfect black granite sarcophagi in the world).

Even the guard who unlocked it for me and let me in closed the door behind him again and took off (the Serapeum was generally not open to visitors at this time, there were no tourists far and wide anyway – so it took some baksheesh to get in). Ancient Egypt is a world of its own for me anyway. When you stand in front of 5000 year old monuments that seem absolutely modern, you ask yourself some questions.

Fascination Egyptian mythology

MH: For example, the first song „Gran Sund Ritual“ features oriental sounds and the song „Hail Out To Thebes“ mentions the temple complex in Karnak (Egypt). Specifically, the magnificent temple of ‚Amun-Re‘ is mentioned in the song. What is the significance of this? Are you a fan of Egyptian culture?

Coldun: Yes – a few years ago I also traveled to Luxor and spent some time directly in the place. But it was in a dangerous phase, so no tourists were there. At night, 3-5 young people with Kalashnikovs in their arms were constantly driving around with their bikes. The whole country was very affected by the crisis, because the tourism money was missing. During this time, I intensively looked at the Karnak complex – several days only this one temple complex. In the evening I pondered then at the Nile – it was incomparable.

The dilemma of religions

MH: Or are there other cultures or religious views that particularly appeal to you? Are you generally a religious and/or spiritual person?

Coldun: I feel generally to belong to no denomination. I have roughly dealt with the major religions and could find in all some things that appealed to me and just as some things that I often find downright repulsive. With the 3 large religions from the Near East, which are quite closely related to each other, I was especially disappointed by the quite clearly recognizable perversion of the original wisdom by human inclinations, mistakes and confusions. Whoever does not recognize, with regard to the crimes and machinations of the church in the past centuries, that it has distanced itself more and more from the original Christian values (see, for example, the Sermon on the Mount), is blind.

I like some things about Buddhist views, for example. For example, this serenity towards worldly things. Often, we Westerners confuse this with arrogance or indifference to the problems of others – but it has nothing to do with that.

Unfortunately, one sees similar distortions between one’s own teachings and lived reality in the countries influenced by Buddhism and Hinduism nowadays. One allows excesses of the most perverse kind without an inner compass to correct at least the worst outbreaks – at least on the system level, on the personal level it is of course more differentiated.

All in all, it is very human when we look at the great religions and the current interpretations. Psychologically, it’s all very interesting and you can learn a lot about us humans – but only a little about God.

Complexity of the album and new ways

MH: Would you agree with the statement that the new album sounds more complex than the albums before it?

Coldun: Yes – it is more complex. Especially the harder and more guitar parts are more frequent and make it more complex.

MH: Does it have something to do with the fact that COLDUN is no longer just a solo project, but has grown to a whole formation?

Coldun: Absolutely! The developments in sound and song structures from „Collapsing Polarities“ to „Grand Sun Ritual“ are clearly due to the shift from a solo project to a band structure.

Especially in the area of drumming and guitars this is very clear. I like this development very much. Also in the individual songs, the influence of the other musicians is quite clear in 4 of the 7 songs, because they were written as a band. Only 3 songs are written by me alone.

Extraordinary

MH: Stylistic devices are used that are not the standard. I’m thinking in particular of the saxophone and the Hammond organ.

How did you come up with the idea of Markus Bär’s saxophone solo on the song „Gran Sun Ritual“?

Coldun: That had been floating around in my head for a few years. When this song came into being and this passage was revealed, the idea quickly germinated that a saxophone solo belonged exactly there – and not a canned one, but a real one, played live. That a saxophone player was found in the wider circle of friends, then put the crown on the whole – I had not thought at first.

MH: What do you associate with the Hammond organ? Why did it become an important part of „Gran Sund Ritual“?

Coldun: I’ve liked the sound of a Hammond organ for a long time, especially in combination with guitars. Certainly, the old rock legends like Deep Purple to Whitesnake play a role here, which I like to listen to. The sound gives the music such a floating impression and a dense sound structure. The rotary speakers also create an interesting stereo effect – I just love it.

MH: There is a lot happening in the songs. „Stories Untold“ stands out in the whole repertoire because it is the only song that is simple and restrained. The acoustic guitar forms the basic framework together with the soft vocals. Later, only drums and electric guitar join in without changing the calm ballad-like basic tenor.

MH: What was the thought behind this kind of interpretation?

Coldun: This quiet song was very important to me, especially as a counterpoint on the album. Such simple, clearly orchestrated and quiet songs please me very much. They act in the structure of an album as a resting place and breather and are important for the whole album.

MH: I understand the album was mixed and mastered in England (Priory Recording Studios Birmingham by Greg Chandler).

How did it feel to let this thing out of your hands for the first time? What did you feel when you heard the final version of the album for the first time?

Coldun: We recorded it at home – a very long time over several years until it was succeeded and I was really satisfied with the result. Then we sent the material to Greg Chandler in Birmingham at Priory Studio, who mixed and mastered it.

It’s true – it was the first time ever that I didn’t mix a CD on which I played a major role myself. I have worked with others on mastering before, including Dan Swanö. That’s why I was a bit afraid whether this was the right step. But after a short time I heard that it was absolutely right. After many years of working on the album, I didn’t have the ears for fresh mixing anymore, and my technique and skills for it weren’t up to date either. Greg Chandler took over in the right place and set the right mix with independent ears.

We are all happy with the result and I would do it again next time.

ist am 15.01.2021 in Form des Albums „Grand Sun Ritual“ der Band COLDUN (Facebook ) emporgestiegen. Was mal als Ein-Mann-Projekt begann, hat sich mittlerweile zu einer vierköpfigen Band entwickelt. Das letzte Album „Collapsing Polarities“ liegt sage und schreibe sechs Jahre zurück. Eine lange Zeit also, in der man viele Erfahrungen sammeln und Inspirationen auf sich wirken lassen konnte. All das hat man nun in den aktuellen Longplayer „Grand Sund Ritual“ einfließen lassen. Herausgekommen ist ein atmosphärische dichte Geschichte, die mit genialen Höhepunkten den Hörer in seinen Bann zieht. Die Reise beginnt mit dem Titelsong

„Grand Sun Ritual“.

Ich kannte die Band nicht und habe mich bewusst vor dem ersten Hören des Albums auch nicht weiter informiert. Also ging ich ganz unvoreingenommen an das Werk heran und es fielen mir sofort zwei Dinge auf. Erstens die ungewöhnlichen orientalischen Klänge beim Einstieg in den ersten Song und direkt im Anschluss die charismatische Ausnahmestimme von Sänger Coldun. Diese Stimmfarbe hat es mir umgehend angetan. Und im folgenden steigerte sich meine Begeisterung von Minute zu Minute, von Moment zu Moment. Denn es gab immer wieder neue Facetten, die sich mir offenbarten.

„Grand Sund Ritual“ mit seinen über sieben Minuten Spielzeit ist ein monumentaler progressiver Song mit maximaler emotionaler Suggestion. Diesen Song habe ich mir direkt schon mal auf die Liste für den Song des Jahres notiert. Der Song lebt vor allem durch den Gesang, aber auch durch die musikalischen Elemente, welche perfekt in Szene gesetzt ein traumhaftes Erlebnis bescheren.

Die düstere geheimnisvolle zurückhaltende Aura im Zusammenspiel mit den kraftvollen kolossalen Refrains sind ergreifend. Als einen der Höhepunkte möchte ich ebenfalls das geniale Saxophonsolo (Gastmusiker Markus Bär) erwähnen. Das geht unter die Haut!

Wälder

scheinen für viele ein Ort der Spiritualität zu sein, in dem man sich mit der Natur besonders verbunden fühlt und abseits der Zivilisation zu sich selbst finden kann. Auch einige Musiker schätzen diese Umgebung und schöpfen immer wieder Kraft und Inspiration daraus.

So befasst sich „The Forest And The Soul“ und das dazugehörige Video ebenfalls mit diesem spirituellen Ort. Auch wenn die Musik zum Teil dunkel und geheimnisvoll erscheint, so soll diese keineswegs einen dystopischen Hintergrund haben, sondern eher Mut machen und zu positiver Sichtweise anregen. Gerade der Tod als großer Angstgegner ist für Coldun nicht das Ende des Seins, sondern nur eine neue Tür, durch die man geht. Diese Erkenntnis bekam er durch viele Reisen rund um den Erdball.

Frontmann Coldun sagt dazu:

„Es geht darin um eine transzendentale Reise im Übergang zwischen Leben und Tod, welche mit der Symbolik des Waldes als Ort der Verbundenheit mit der Schöpfung verwoben ist. Das Lied beschreibt das schöne Gefühl, diesen Übergang zu beschreiten – wie beim perfekten Durchfliegen eines Waldes.„

Coole Vibes

entstehen zwischendurch immer wieder durch den Einsatz der Hammond-Orgel. Dies kommt zum Beispiel auch im Laufe des Songs „Down Below“ zum Vorschein, der zunächst ruhig beginnt und dann mit einem grandiosen Gitarrenpart die Energie entfesselt, in welche dann Coldun mit seinem Gesang einsteigt. Der Song spielt wie gewohnt mit verschiedensten Stimmungen und überrascht sogar mit Black-Metal-Elementen ohne dabei seine grundsätzlich hochmelodische Ausstrahlung zu verlieren.

Klassisch wird es dann bei „Stories Untold“. Eine Ballade, bei der Gesang und Akustikgitarre die tragende Rolle spielen. Dies ist nicht sonderlich aufregend, sondern bewusst einfach und ruhig gehalten. Ein charmantes melodisches E-Gitarrensolo verfeinert diese Ballade im Mittelteil. Schöner Song! Nicht mehr, nicht weniger!

Fazit

COLDUN ist es mit „Grand Sund Ritual“ eindrucksvoll gelungen ein atmosphärisch dichtes und fesselndes Opus zu erschaffen. Das musikalische Niveau ist konstant hoch, sowohl gesanglich als auch instrumental. Die Stimme von Coldun ist dabei als außergewöhnlich zu bezeichnen und ist ein starkes Charakteristikum der musikalischen Erscheinung. Ein ganz starkes Album mit intensiver emotionaler Ausstrahlung.

Dark atmospheric metal

has risen on 15.01.2021 in the form of the album „Grand Sun Ritual“ of the band COLDUN (Facebook ). What once began as a one-man project, has now developed into a four-head band. The last album „Collapsing Polarities“ is no less than six years ago. A long time, in which one could collect a lot of experiences and inspirations. All this has now been incorporated into the current long player „Grand Sund Ritual“. The result is an atmospheric, dense story that captivates the listener with ingenious climaxes. The journey begins with the title track

Grand Sun Ritual

I didn’t know the band and consciously didn’t read up on them before listening to the album for the first time. So I approached the work with an open mind and two things immediately struck me. Firstly, the unusual oriental sounds at the entrance of the first song and directly after that the charismatic exceptional voice of singer Coldun. I was immediately taken with this special voice . And in the following my enthusiasm increased from minute to minute, from moment to moment. Because there were always new facets that revealed themselves to me.

„Grand Sund Ritual“ with its over seven minutes playing time is a monumental progressive song with maximum emotional suggestion. I have already noted this song directly on the list for the song of the year. The song lives mainly through the vocals, but also through the musical elements, which perfectly set in scene give a dreamlike experience.

The dark mysterious reserved aura in interaction with the powerful colossal choruses are touching. As one of the highlights I would like to mention the brilliant saxophone solo ( guest musician Markus Bär). This goes under the skin!

The Forest

seem to be a place of spirituality for many, where one feels particularly connected with nature and can find oneself away from civilization. Some musicians also appreciate this environment and draw strength and inspiration from it again and again.

Thus, „The Forest And The Soul“ and the accompanying video also deal with this spiritual place. Even if the music seems dark and mysterious in parts, it is by no means meant to have a dystopian background, but rather to encourage and inspire a positive outlook. Especially the scary death is for Coldun not the end of being, but only a new door through which one goes. He got this insight through many journeys around the globe.

Frontman Coldun comments:

„It is about a transcendental journey in the transition between life and death, which is interwoven with the symbolism of the forest as a place of connection with creation. The song describes the beautiful feeling of walking this transition – like flying through a forest perfectly.“

arise in between again and again through the use of the Hammond organ. This is for example evident in the song „Down Below“, which begins quietly and then unleashes the energy with a grandiose guitar part, in which then Coldun enters with his vocals. The song plays with as usual with different moods and even suprises with little black metal elements.

Then it becomes classic with „Stories Untold“. A ballad in which vocals and acoustic guitar play the leading role. This is not particularly exciting, but deliberately kept simple and quiet. A charming melodic electric guitar solo enhances this ballad in the middle section. Nice song! No more, no less!

Result

COLDUN has impressively succeeded in creating an atmospherically dense and captivating opus with „Grand Sund Ritual“. The musical level is constantly high, both vocally and instrumentally. The voice of Coldun can be described as extraordinary and is a strong characteristic of the musical appearance. A very strong album with intense emotional appeal.

Der Song entstammt dem Debütalbum „Meta“ (wir hatten hier darauf hingewiesen), welches nun als extended version mit 2 Bonustracks verfügbar ist. Ein interessantes Signing verkünden ROCKSHOTS Records. Man hat das von Tolkien inspirierte progressive Rock Orchester AINUR unter Vertrag genommen. Neue Musik haben wir noch nicht vorliegen. Aber bis zum Erscheinen des neuen Albums „War of the jewels“ in diesem Jahr haben wir für einen ersten Höreindruck diese Nummer für euch.

Das ist euch zu seicht und ihr mögt es deutlich härter? Auch das ist natürlich möglich. Aus dem fernen Australien stammen THEREIN und die Progressive Metaller servieren uns aus ihrem aktuellen Release „Aramitama“ die neueste Single „ALH84001“. Dazu meint der Sänger der Band: „ALH84001 tells the (technically true) story of a meteorite’s journey to Earth from the perspective of the meteorite. Torn from it’s home on Mars, thrown into space for millions of years, and ultimately colliding with Earth. This song was composed by band guitarist Ryan Boyd, inspired by the events surrounding the real life meteorite known as ALH84001. The Martian meteorite was the center of controversy when it was discovered as it was initially believed to contain signs of extraterrestrial life – however the song focuses on it’s last moments hurtling through space, burning up in the atmosphere, and finally smashing into the ground.“

Richtig gut gefallen mir COLDUN. Der Vierer, der nach seinem Frontmann benannt ist und sich dem atmosphärischen Progressive Metal verschrieben hat, will in 2 Wochen sein drittes Langeisen mit dem Titel „Grand sun ritual“ unter die Leute bringen.
