ist die Passion von XAEL (Facebook ) aus den USA. Eine kleine Vorgeschichte dazu, wie ich zu dieser Band gefunden habe. Letztes Jahr habe ich bei `metal-heads.de´ eine Rezension über das Album „The Oubliette“ von THE RETICENT geschrieben (Link ) . Dabei handelt es sich um den Musiker und Multiinstrumentalisten Chris Hathcock. Dieser hat mit „The Oubliette“ ein sensibles und hochemotionales Thema musikalisch umgesetzt, nämlich ein berührende musikalische Erzählung über die Alzheimer Krankheit. Chris Hathcock ist aber noch Teil eines anderen Bandprojekts, nämlich

XAEL

XAEL beackern ein ganz anderes thematisches Feld. Sie fühlen sich im Bereich der Fantasy Science Fiction heimisch. XAEL haben sich ein ganz eigenes Universum geschaffen (Infos hier ). Es geht um den ewigen Kampf von Dynastien, menschliche und göttliche.

Musikalisch ist das Ganze sehr hart und progressiv umgesetzt. Die Palette reicht von hochmelodischen Klängen bis hin zu brutalen finsteren Ausbrüchen. Eine Kostprobe davon zeigte bereits die letztjährige EP „The Last Arbiter“. Hier ein sehr aufwendiges, aber auch verstörendes Video von dem Song „The Secrets Of The Third Tribe“.

Bloodtide Rising

ist die logische Fortsetzung Geschichte. Mit einem cineastischen melodischen Intro beginnt die Geschichte. Leise Pianotöne über einem sphärischen Synthiesound werden von Trommeln und Orgeltönen abgelöst. Das Intro steigert sich in seiner Intensität bis hin zu rituell anmutenden Chören und klingt schließlich in aller Ruhe aus, um für den Track „As Decreed-The Law Of Vuul“ Platz zu machen, der das drohende

Unheil

einläutet. Mit dunkler Symphonie bricht das Chaos hervor. Eine zerstörende Arie, die der Naturgewalt eines schweren Unwetters gleicht. Es ist so faszinierend wie gefährlich. Es ist wie eine finstere Gewitterfront, die sich am Himmel durch schwarze riesige Wolkenberge manifestiert. Blitze durchschneiden das dunkle Firmament in Form glühender Gitarrenleads, die einen elektrisieren. Dann folgt das markerschütternde Donnergrollen.

Imposante Drums lassen die Erde erbeben und Blastbeats prasseln auf Euch hernieder wie bei einem Hagelsturm. Dämonische Growls vom düsteren Herrn der Stimme, Joshua Niemeyer, verpassen dem Ganzen eine brutale Wahnsinnigkeit und huldigen dem Chaos. Es rollt wie ein Hurricane über Euch hinweg, nimmt Euch auseinander und lässt Euch in Einzelteilen zurück. Das Ende des Songs versöhnt Euch dann doch noch mit cleanem Chorgesang.

Imposante orchestrale Klänge

fügen sich regelmäßig in die Songs ein und steigern dabei auf verschiedene Art die Intensität der Songs, indem eindrucksvoller Bombast und eine packende atmosphärische Dichte erzeugt wird. So wird beispielsweise der Titelsong „Bloodtide Rising“ mit einer krassen Celloarmada brachial düster eingeleitet. Epische chorale Beschwörungsgesänge ertönen wiederum bei „The Red Odyssey“.

Die Songs sind randvoll mit musikalischem Rüstzeug. Alles in lupenreiner technischer Qualität, egal wohin man hört. Akkorde und Rhythmen wechseln ihre Persönlichkeit immerfort und bauen sich zu einem progressiven Monster auf. So fällt es einem schwer einzelne Instrumente oder Elemente hervorzuheben. Es gibt so unheimlich viel zu entdecken, dass man alles gar nicht beim ersten Hören aufnehmen kann. Ich könnte hier seitenweise Eindrücke niederschreiben, die durch die

Progressivität

der Kompositionen erschaffen werden. Wahrhaftig können XAEL nicht nur die finstersten und brutalsten Fantasien Wirklichkeit werden lassen. Nein, sie brillieren zwischendurch mit einem Gespür für feine Melodien, deren Klänge wie Sternschnuppen in finsterer Nacht für kurze Zeit das Dunkel erhellen. Gerne bedienen sich XAEL auch teilweise akustischer Gitarrenklänge oder verzaubern mit sanften Pianoklängen. Beides findet man in dem Song „The Waste Of The Dreadrift“.

Die pure Zerstörung

zelebriert zum Beispiel „Srai-The Demon of Erring“. Dieser Dämon erweist sich als brutales Ungetüm, dass über Euch hinwegfegt wie ein Horde Büffel, die den Erdboden mit ihrer Masse und Kraft erzittern lassen. Dafür sorgen die niederschmetternden Drums verbunden mit den schweren Basslinien. Zerfetzend erklingen auch hier die barbarischen Riffs, worüber ein umwerfendes Gitarrensolo hinwegfegt. Die finsteren Growls vervollständigen diese Komposition des Untergangs.

Fazit

XAEL haben mit „Bloodtide Rising“ ein kolossales cineastisches Epos erschaffen, eine dunkle Symphonie, die mit einer immens intensiven Atmosphäre die Geschichte des Albums erzählt. Hier ist der Begriff Kompositionen mehr als angebracht. Es ist ein mächtiges Album geworden. Der Sound von XAEL besticht durch seine Eigenwilligkeit in der Art der Zusammensetzung und Erscheinung. XAEL erzählen Geschichten auf ganz eigene Art und Weise. Ein meisterhafte Leistung.

Last year I wrote a review at`metal-heads.de‘ about the album „The Oubliette“ by THE RETICENT (Link ). This is about the musician and multi-instrumentalist Chris Hathcock. With „The Oubliette“ he has musically realized a sensitive and highly emotional topic, namely a touching musical story about Alzheimer’s disease. But Chris Hathcock is also part of another band project, namely

XAEL.

XAEL plow a completely different thematic field. They feel at home in the realm of fantasy science fiction. XAEL have succeeded in creating their very own universe (infos here ). It is about the eternal struggle of dynasties, human and divine.

XAEL plow a completely different thematic field. They feel at home in the field of fantasy science fiction. Musically it is Extreme-Progressive-Symphonic-Metal. The palette ranges from highly melodic sounds to brutal sinister outbreaks. A sample of this was already shown on last year’s EP „The Last Arbiter“. Here is a very elaborate, but also disturbing video of the song „The Secrets Of The Third Tribe“.

Bloodtide Rising

is the logical continuation. The story begins with a cinematic melodic intro. Soft piano notes over a spherical synth sound are replaced by drums and organ tones. The intro increases in intensity to the point of cultic tribal choruses and finally fades out quietly to make way for the track „As Decreed-The Law Of Vuul“, which brings the impending

disaster.

Chaos erupts with dark symphony. A destructive aria that resembles the force of nature of a heavy storm. It is as fascinating as it is dangerous. It is like a sinister storm front that manifests itself in the sky through black huge cloud mountains. Lightning cuts through the dark firmament in the form of glowing guitar leads that electrify you. Then follows the bloodcurdling rumble of thunder.

Imposing drums make the earth tremble and blast beats pelt down on you like a hailstorm. Demonic growls from the dark lord of the voice, Joshua Niemeyer, add brutal madness and pay homage to chaos. It rolls over you like a hurricane, takes you apart and leaves you in pieces. The end of the song reconciles you with clean choir vocals.

Imposing orchestral sounds

are regularly inserted into the songs and increase the intensity of the songs in different ways by creating impressive bombast and a gripping atmospheric density. For example, the title track „Bloodtide Rising“ is introduced with a dark cello armada. Epic choral incantations sound again in „The Red Odyssey“.

The songs are filled to the brim with musical gear. Everything in flawless technical quality, no matter where you listen. Chords and rhythms are constantly changing their personalities and building up to a progressive monster. So it’s hard to single out individual instruments or elements. There is so much to discover that you can’t take it all in on the first listen. I could write down pages and pages of impressions here, which are created by the

versatility.

Truly XAEL can not only make the darkest and most brutal fantasies come true. They shine in between with a sense for fine melodies, whose sounds illuminate the darkness for a short time like shooting stars in a dark night. With pleasure XAEL also partly make use of acoustic guitar sounds or enchant with gentle piano sounds. Both can be found in the song „The Waste Of The Dreadrift“.

Pure destruction

celebrates, for example, „Srai-The Demon of Erring“. This demon proves to be a brutal monster that sweeps over you like a horde of buffaloes that make the ground tremble with their mass and power. This is ensured by the shattering drums combined with the heavy bass lines. The barbaric riffs also sound shredding here, over which stunning lead guitar parts sweep away. The sinister growls complete this composition of doom.

Result

XAEL have created a colossal cinematic epic with „Bloodtide Rising“, a dark symphony that tells the story of the album with an immensely intense atmosphere. Here the term compositions is more than appropriate. It has become a powerful album. The sound of XAEL captivates with its originality in the way of composition and style. XAEL tell story in their own unique way. A masterful achievement.
