DEAF AID kommen aus dem Süden Deutschlands, genauer gesagt aus Freiburg, das mit einem malerischen mittelalterlichen Stadtzentrum zum Bummeln einlädt.. Die Musik der Breisgauer Band ist allerdings nicht ganz so malerisch und lädt eher zum intensiven Nackentraining ein oder auch zu ein wenig Ausdauertraining im Moshpit. Passend zum Albumtitel ‚Hellgate‘ öffnet sich der Höllenschlund, um Euch mit einem dämonischen musikalischen Angriff heimzusuchen. Im Jahr 2020 hatten wir bei ‚metal-heads.de‘ bereits die EP ‚Precursors Of Extermination‘ in einem Review vorgestellt. Da war ich schon recht angetan von der Mucke.

Was den textlichen Inhalt angeht, zitiere ich mal aus dem Pressetext:

Das Resultat in Gestalt von „Hellgate“ widerspiegelt in vielen seiner Texte Beobachtungen jener Zeit des Ausnahmezustands, befasst sich mit der zunehmenden Spaltung unserer Gesellschaft, thematisiert die menschliche Gier und unseren Egoismus. Der Albumtitel sowie das Cover-Artwork versinnbildlichen die Öffnung in eine unheilvolle Zukunft, die nicht nur durch die Pandemie, sondern auch durch die politische Radikalisierung auf der ganzen Welt, durch religiösen Fanatismus und durch unsere Ignoranz gegenüber Mutter Erde geprägt ist. Während wir lachend in die Kreissäge gehen sind es DEAF AID, die mit „Hellgate“ den passenden Soundtrack dazu liefern.

Der Sound gibt sich nach wie vor Old School

und der Death Metal wird auch weiterhin mit einer gehörigen Portion Thrash geknüppelt. Der Sound hat sich in den drei Jahren merklich entwickelt. Der Opener ‚Reign Of Retards‘ macht dies unmittelbar deutlich. Nicht nur die Produktion klingt erheblich satter und druckvoller, auch der Sound wirkt ausgereifter und strukturierter. So erscheinen die Songs in sich harmonischer und fließender, was aber nicht zu Lasten der Intensität geht. Ganz im Gegenteil! Man macht mehr Gebrauch von krassen Midtempo-Passagen, die sich mit wilden Passagen duellieren. Was ebenfalls auffällt, dass Sänger Marc den extremen Vocals mehr Varianz verleiht. Irgendwie habe ich auch subjektiv das Gefühl, dass die Growls noch finsterer klingen als zuvor. (Cleane Vocals gibt es nicht!)

‚Reign Of Retards‘ handelt von der Unfähigkeit vieler Menschen in Führungspositionen. Wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse werden verkehrt und Absurditäten als Wahrheit verkauft. Wer laut genug brüllt und es oft genug wiederholt, hat recht.

Höllensturm

‚TOT‘ wirbelt im Anschluss mächtig Staub auf, denn hier zünden DEAF AID die nächste Geschwindigkeitsstufe. Der Song dürfte auch als Mosh-Pit-Rakete äußerst wirksam sein. Also schön anschnallen und ab geht die Höllenfahrt durch den Feuersturm. Ich muss sagen, dass mir diese speedigen thrashigen Ausbrüche sehr gut gefallen, denn sie sorgen für viel Leben in der Bude. Und von diesen Zündstufen gibt es etliche auf dem Album, denn sie gehören zum feurigen Rezept von DEAF AID und von dieser Zutat hat man auf ‚Hellgate‘ ausgiebig Gebrauch gemacht.

‚Ausgeburt‘ bleibt im unheilvollen bedrohlichen Midtempo-Modus. Dagegen überrascht ‚Gutas‘ mit einem echt guten stampfenden Groove und damit, dass der Song auf Spanisch gegrowlt wird. Allerdings macht der Song zwischendurch richtig Alarm und verteilt wilde Arschtritte. Für eine Party im Titty Twister (Film ‚From Dusk Till Dawn‘) wäre das genau der passende Soundtrack.

‚Let The Infidel Rot‘ lässt nach ruhigem Beginn wieder die Kreissäge rotieren. Thematisch geht es hier um religiöse Radikalsierung und den daraus resultierenden Terror. ‚Inner Nightmare‘ ist ebenfalls eine wüste Schlacht inmitten der menschlichen Abgründe und Albträume.

Der Titeltrack ‚Hellgate‘ beginnt mit gemächlicher Melodik wird der Song sanft eingeleitet, aber der schwere Bass sorgt schon für eine unterschwellige unheilvolle Stimmung. Mit Einsetzen der Gitarrenriffs und Growls manifestiert sich schließlich das düstere Unheil. Die fließenden Tempiwechseln und melodischen Leads sorgen im Song für temperamentvolle Kurzweiligkeit.

Fazit

DEAF AID lassen mit ihrem neuen Album ‚Hellgate‘ finstere Träume wahr werden. Die albtraumhafte Reise führt in dunkelste Abgründe mit massiven verzehrenden Todeswalzen und höllisch wilden Eskalationen, die im Berserkermodus alles kurz und klein häckseln.

Und ich muss sagen, dass mir das Album mit jedem Hören besser gefallen hat. Es ist rundum gelungen und der Mix aus brachialer Vehemenz in den gemäßigen Tempozonen und den wilden zerstörerischen schnellen Höllenfahrten dürfte jeden Fan dunkler brutaler Ausgeburten höllisch gut gefallen. Für mich springen DEAF AID somit in den Beginn der 9-Punkte-Zone.

DEAF AID come from the south of Germany, more precisely from Freiburg, which invites you to stroll around with a picturesque medieval city. However, the music of DEAF AID is not quite as picturesque and invites rather to intensive neck shaking or even a little training in the mosh pit. Fitting to the album title ‚Hellgate‘ the hellmouth opens to haunt you with a demonic musical attack. In 2020 we had already presented the EP ‚Precursors Of Extermination‘ in a review at ‚metal-heads.de‘.

As for the textual content, I’ll quote from the press release:

The result in the form of „Hellgate“ reflects in many of its lyrics observations of that time of emergency, deals with the increasing division of our society, addresses human greed and our selfishness. The album title as well as the cover artwork symbolize the opening into an ominous future marked not only by the pandemic, but also by political radicalization around the world, religious fanaticism, and our ignorance of Mother Earth. While we go laughing into the buzz saw it’s DEAF AID who provide the fitting soundtrack with „Hellgate“.

The sound is still old school

and the death metal continues to be bludgeoned with a good portion of Thrash. The sound has developed noticeably in the three years. The opener ‚Reign Of Retards‘ makes this immediately clear. Not only the production sounds more powerful and punchier, also the sound seems more mature and structured. Thus, the songs seem more harmonious and flowing, but as intensive as ever. They make more use of blatant midtempo passages, which duel with wild passages. What is also noticeable is that singer Marc gives more variance to the extreme vocals. Somehow I also subjectively feel that the growls sound even more sinister than before. (There are no clean vocals!).

‚Reign Of Retards‘ is about the incompetence of many people in leadership positions. Scientific findings are reversed and absurdities are sold as truth. Whoever roars loud enough and repeats it often enough is right.

Hellfire

‚TOT‘ stirs up a lot of dust, because here DEAF AID ignite the next speed level. The song should also be extremely effective as a mosh pit rocket. So fasten your seatbelts and off you go on the hellish ride through the firestorm. I must say that I really like these speedy thrashy outbursts, because it provides a lot of life in the whole sound. And there are quite a few of these ignition stages on the album, because they belong to the fiery recipe of DEAF AID and they have made extensive use of this ingredient on ‚Hellgate‘.

‚Ausgeburt‘ stays in the ominous threatening midtempo mode. In contrast, ‚Gutas‘ surprises with a really good stomping groove and with the fact that the song is growled in Spanish. However, the song is in between really disturbing and distributes wild ass kicks. For a party in the Titty Twister (movie ‚From Dusk Till Dawn‘) this would be exactly the right soundtrack.

‚Let The Infidel Rot‘ lets the chainsaw rotate again after a quiet beginning. Thematically it is about religious radicalization and the resulting terror. ‚Inner Nightmare‘ is also a desolate battle in the midst of human abysses and nightmares.

The title track ‚Hellgate‘ begins with leisurely melodic the song is introduced gently, but the heavy bass already provides a subliminal ominous mood. With the onset of guitar riffs and growls finally manifests itself the gloomy doom. The flowing tempo changes and melodic leads provide spirited entertainment in the song.

Conclusion

DEAF AID let dark dreams come true with their new album ‚Hellgate‘. The nightmarish journey leads into the darkest abysses with massive consuming death rollers and hellishly wild escalations that chop everything short and small in berserker mode.

And I must say that I liked the album better with every listen. It is successful all around and the mix of brute vehemence in the moderate tempo zones and the wild destructive fast hell rides should please every fan of dark brutal spawn hellishly well. For me, DEAF AID thus jump into the beginning of the 9-point zone.

Old School Death Metal

is the thing of DEAF AID (homepage). The men have already released an EP in June this year and luckily this somehow found his way to ‚metal-heads.de‘ after all. So I would like to introduce this band to you. The guys are from Freiburg and the roots of the band go back to the 80’s! They started out as a trash band and changed the sound here and there until they finally ended up with classic death metal. But there are also influences of other styles like Thrash or Doom. After the release of the album „Pictured Pain“ they toured with POWERWOLF, SKULLFIST and DISBELIEF in 2008. This was followed by the next album „Shreds Of Insanity“ in 2015, which also received good reviews. After that there were many concerts (Do you remember the time before Covid 19 with concerts and social life? It´s really sad now…) and in June 2020 the result of the latest creative phase followed with the EP „Precursors Of Extermination“. So DEAF AID (Facebook) are old hands in the business and you can hear that in the songs.

DEAF AID – Precursors Of Extermination

make a strong violent impression. „Fragment by Fragment“ starts right away with full throttle. Immediately the thrashy roots come out. The chorus slows down the tempo a little, but stomps forward very massively. Marc´s sinister Growls go through and through and fit the sound very well. Impressive drums alternate between vehemently pushing forward and powerful stomping. The guitars sweep raw and nervously through the song. Sometimes the song sweeps away like a tornado, only to take its destructive path again like tough lava.

DOOM

is also a companion of the musical appearance. „Bullet“ is an absolute breaker song that really gets to you. Dark sounds resonate at any time and often the gloom intensifies into black darkness. The song will definitely blow your ears free. And these cool riffs from 02:28 are really great and give the song a portion of groove before it breaks out again with all its might. A deeply shattering experience succeeds, which breaks through with a lot of dark energy and unadulterated rawness. All neck swingers will have their bright joy with the sound.

Oppressive and bizarre

the last track „The Grudge“ has its appearance. A song that is fundamentally different from all other tracks on the EP. A crazy bizarre song that doesn’t roll down the listener with a massive wall of sound and carries him away, at least most of the time. Instead it succeeds with few means in creating an eerie dark atmosphere. A song that could be played as the perfect musical background for the next demon summoning. Twice, however, the song suddenly bursts out demonic with power. In my opinion, the song is a little bit too long with its 08:00 minutes.

Result of DEAF AID „Precursors Of Extermination“

DEAF AID open the gates of damnation and unleash some real crushers on humanity. A raw and unadulterated sound that spreads an incredible energy and presence.It remains to mention that the coverartwork of Chris Cold looks just awesome. On Bandcamp you should therefore urgently order the CD edition limited to 100 pieces for only 6,66€. Furthermore the men promised that they are already working on other songs and want to release something in shorter intervals. Let’s hope that they keep their promise.

Death Metal der alten Schule

bekommt man bei DEAF AID (Homepage) zu hören. Die Männer haben schon im Juni eine EP herausgebracht und glücklicherweise hat diese es irgendwie doch noch zu `metal-heads.de´ geschafft, so dass ich Euch diese Band gerne vorstellen möchte. Aus Freiburg kommen die Burschen und die Wurzeln der Band reichen tatsächlich bis in die 80 ´er Jahre zurück. Man begann damals als Trash-Kapelle und änderte den Sound mal hier und da, bis man letztlich grob gesehen bei klassischen Death-Metal landete. Allerdings sind auch Einflüsse anderer Stilrichtungen zu hören wie Thrash oder Doom. Nach dem Release des Albums „Pictured Pain“ tourten sie 2008 mit POWERWOLF, SKULLFIST und DISBELIEF. Danach folgte im Jahre 2015 das nächste Album „Shreds Of Insanity“, welches ebenfalls gute Kritiken einfahren konnte. Danach gab es viele Konzerte (das waren noch Zeiten….Schnief) und nun folgte im Juni 2020 mit der EP „Precursors Of Extermination“ das Ergebnis der jüngsten kreativen Schaffensphase. Also sind DEAF AID (Facebook) alte Hasen im Business und das hört man den Songs auch an.

DEAF AID – Die Vorboten der Vernichtung

(Übersetzung des Albumtitels) legen einen ziemlich heftigen Auftritt hin. „Fragment by Fragment“ legt direkt mit Vollgas los und zeigt, wo der Frosch die Locken hat. Da kommen sofort die thrashigen Wurzeln zum Vorschein. Der Refrain fährt das Tempo ein wenig zurück, stampft aber sehr massiv voran. Die finsteren Growls vom Sänger Marc gehen durch und durch und passen zum Sound wie die Faust aufs Auge. Die beeindruckenden Drums wechseln zwischen vehementem Voranpreschen und mächtigem Stampfen. Die Gitarren fegen roh und nervös durch den Song. Mal fegt der Song wie ein Tornado hinweg, um dann wieder wie zähe Lava unaufhaltsam seinen zerstörerischen Weg zu nehmen.

Der Doom

ist ebenfalls ein Begleiter des musikalischen Erscheinungsbildes. „Bullet“ ist ein absoluter Brechersong, der es einem richtig besorgt. Düstere Klänge schwingen jederzeit mit und oft intensiviert sich die Düsternis in schwarze Finsternis. Der Song wird euch auf jeden Fall die Gehörgänge freipusten. Und diese geilen Riffs ab Minute 02:28 sind richtig klasse und gibt dem Song noch eine Portion Groove mit auf den Weg, bevor er wieder mit aller Gewalt ausbricht. Es wird ein tief erschütterndes Ergebnis geschaffen, dass mit viel dunkler Energie und unverfälschter Rohheit durchbricht. Alle Nackenschwinger werden ihre helle Freude an dem Sound haben.

Beklemmend und skurril

hat der letzte Track „The Grudge“ seinen Auftritt. Ein Song, der sich grundsätzlich von allen anderen Tracks auf der EP unterscheidet. Ein irrer skurriler Song, der den Hörer nicht mit einer massiven Soundwand niederwalzt und mitreißt, zumindest die meiste Zeit. Stattdessen wird mit wenigen Mitteln eine unheimliche finstere Atmosphäre geschaffen. Ein Song, den man als perfekte musikalische Untermalung bei der nächsten Dämonenbeschwörung spielen könnte. Zweimal bricht der Song allerdings dann doch plötzlich mit Kraft dämonisch hervor. Der Song zieht sich aber meiner Meinung nach mit seinen 08:00 Minuten ein wenig in die Länge.

Fazit zu DEAF AID „Precursors Of Extermination“

DEAF AID öffnen die Pforten der Verdammnis und lassen ein paar echte Brecher auf die Menschheit los, die roh und unverfälscht eine unheimliche Energie und Präsenz verbreiten. Der letzte Song überrascht von seiner Art und ist einfach anders. Bleibt noch zu erwähnen, dass das Coverartwork von Chris Cold einfach nur geil aussieht. Auf Bandcamp solltet Ihr daher dringend die auf 100 Stück limitierte CD-Ausgabe für nur 6,66€ bestellen. Zudem haben die Männer versprochen, dass sie bereits an anderen Songs arbeiten und in kürzeren Abständen etwas veröffentlichen wollen. Dann wollen wir mal hoffen, dass sie ihr Versprechen auch einhalten.
