Casey and a dream of Europe

MH: Hello Casey. When people listen to your music and see a photo of you, most people would think that you are from Sweden or Norway. But you are originally from Austin, Texas. Have you ever been to Sweden or Norway? Which countries or places would you like to visit or give a concert in?

C.H.: I have never been to Sweden, Norway, or anywhere in northern Europe actually, but it‘s always been a dream of mine to visit those places, not just to tour but to go hiking and exploring. I‘d love to tour through those countries but also everywhere across Europe. The mindset towards extreme metal, especially the kind of metal we play, is much different in Europe in general and it is a major goal of ours to tour and play festivals across the continent (hopefully once this situation with Covid19 settles down a bit.)

AUSTIN, the music city in Texas

MH: They say that Austin is a very musical city. It has even been awarded the title „Live Music Capital Of The World“. How do we have to imagine the musical life in Austin? Where and how are you confronted with it everywhere? How did you come to Death-Metal? Do you still have preferences for other music styles that inspire you?

C.H.:Austin has always been a very good place to live if you‘re a musician. Plenty of venues, promoters, hugely talanted artists, and a lively music scene for a large variety of genres. As for metal, the scene here in Austin has grown a lot in the last 10 years. Venues like The Lost Well, Dirty Dog (unfortunately we just found out they closed their doors for good), and Come and Take It Live, are some of our favorites to watch shows and play at.

I came to death metal and extreme metal in general in my teen years after being introduced to bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Black Label Society, etc. I remember at the time I had started to hear bands like Children of Bodom and Opeth that had double bass and harsh vocals which really stood out to me as being more aggressive than the bands I had been listening to and I was almost immediately enamored. Metal is my go-to genre (I‘m a simple man sometimes…) but I very much enjoy post-rock, almost anything Steven Wilson has had his hands on, and even some alternative rock like the band Feeder.

Intention of „Death Of The Cosmic“

MH: TEXAS is a sunny state in the USA. Your cover, on the other hand, looks very dreary. The colours are dark. A modern office building piles up in the middle of black trees. The building as a symbol of human civilisation in its dismal sobriety in combination with trees as a symbol of nature. Trees are black without leaves and appear dead. The dystopian feeling is conveyed that human civilisation is displacing and destroying nature. Am I right? Please describe to us in more detail what you want to express with the picture and therefore also with the album.

C.H.: Yes, that is correct. The album cover is meant to represent the brutalist creation(s) of man cutting like a knifes edge through nature, destroying it in its path and leaving in its shadow the fading starlight representing the universal, divine force in the universe. It‘s concept represents a pretty bleak outlook on things in the current paradigm on this planet, and I think the bleak artistic style Travis Smith incorporated fits well with the vision we were trying to convey.

Nature and Spirituality

MH: What does nature mean to you?

C.H.: To me nature means the pure, majestic, universal force that exists in a more powerful way than anything man could imagine, whether its a 20,000 foot mountain jutting out of the landscape or the delicate intricacy of a sunflower. The natural world is something far more meaningful than the short time we spend existing within it.

MH: I like these poetic lyrics on the album. They turned out very well. Are you a spiritual person?

C.H.: I‘d say I‘m a spiritual person. Though I don‘t subcribe to any specific belief system or religion, I believe in a higher organization to the universe that I think us humans may never fully understand.

Casey Hurd and his „baby

MH: The song „Sacred Delusion“ for me is the most atmospheric track on the album and creates a tremendous depth. You mentioned that this song took the longest time in its creation. It is also the song you recorded with your colleague Toni Toivonen as a guest musician. Could you tell our readers where the difficulties were? 

C.H.: The song „In Sacred Delusion“ took a long time to write mostly due to my own indecisiveness about where I wanted the song to go. I initially came up with the chorus of the song and then formed the rest of it around that. Some songs are just like that, while not being very technical they take time to form and grow and others come together more quickly. I suppose to me, it was a song that I liked enough to be very picky about what parts went where and how it progressed. As far as working with Toni, at that point the song had already been written so it was just a matter of him recording his vocals, which I feel he did an excellent job on.

Tradition and Modernity

MH: In the song „Cold Conception“ the mongolian string instrument „morin chuur“ plays a role. Are you a friend of unusual and traditional instruments? Can we expect that such instruments will play a role in the sound of HINAYANA from time to time?

C.H.: I‘m somewhat familiar with different kinds of traditional instruments, and seeing as we were very happy with how the “horsehead fiddle“ turned out on that song, one might expect to hear more of that sort of thing on future songs. That being said the band does not call back to some ancient tradition or specific culture so our use of traditional instruments will have more to do how they sound to create specific moods pertaining to the song they might be used in.

A glow in the dark

MH: The instrumental song „Yet Here I Wait Forever“ is a light, even almost dreamy song. It represents a small oasis in the otherwise rather gloomy songs. What does this track stand for? Is it a little glimmer of hope in a dark world?

C.H.: I‘d say the song represents a sort of dark beauty in the innevitable unfolding of our own self destruction. It has a hopeful sound. It is about being at peace with the bleak surrounding world, and acceptance of the current state of things in the world, giving the listener a breather in the middle of the EP, contrasting the gloomy moods of the other tracks.

Find peace

MH: It’s pretty hot in Texas. In Austin there is a big lake that offers cooling. When was the last time you were at Town Lake? What’s the best way for you to switch off and find peace?

C.H.: Funny enough I actually don‘t usually visit Town Lake. To me, getting out of the big city and away from other people is the best way to switch off and escape the hustle of my daily routine, which is actually why I prefer to visit Canyon Lake, further out into the country near the small town of New Braunfels, Texas.

Casey und ein Traum von Europa

MH: Hallo Casey. Wenn die Leute deine Musik hören und ein Foto von dir sehen, würden die meisten Leute denken, dass du aus Schweden oder Norwegen kommst. Aber du kommst ursprünglich aus Austin, Texas. Warst du schon einmal in Schweden oder Norwegen? Welche Länder oder Orte würdest du gerne besuchen oder dort ein Konzert geben?

C.H.: Ich war noch nie in Schweden, Norwegen oder irgendwo in Nordeuropa, aber es war schon immer ein Traum von mir, diese Orte zu besuchen, nicht nur um zu touren, sondern um zu wandern und zu erkunden. Ich würde gerne durch diese Länder reisen, aber auch überall in Europa. Die Mentalität zum extremen Metal, insbesondere zu der Art von Metal, die wir spielen, ist in Europa im Allgemeinen ganz anders. Es ist eines unserer Hauptziele, durch den ganzen Kontinent zu touren und auf Festivals zu spielen (hoffentlich, sobald sich die Situation mit Covid19 ein wenig beruhigt hat).

AUSTIN, die Musikstadt in Texas

MH: Man sagt, dass Austin eine sehr musikalische Stadt ist. Sie hat sogar den Titel „Live Music Capital Of The World“ erhalten. Wie müssen wir uns das musikalische Leben in Austin vorstellen? Wo und wie wird man überall damit konfrontiert? Wie bist Du zum Death-Metal gekommen? Hast Du noch Vorlieben für andere Musikstile, die Dich inspirieren?

C.H.: Austin war schon immer ein sehr guter Ort zum Leben, wenn man Musiker ist. Es gibt viele Veranstaltungsorte, Veranstalter, enorm talentierte Künstler und eine lebendige Musikszene für eine Vielzahl von Genres. Was den Metal betrifft, so ist die Szene hier in Austin in den letzten 10 Jahren stark gewachsen. Veranstaltungsorte wie „The Lost Well“, „Dirty Dog“ (leider haben wir gerade erst herausgefunden, dass sie ihre Türen für immer geschlossen haben) und „Come and Take It Live“ gehören zu unseren Favoriten, an denen wir Shows sehen und spielen. Zum Death-Metal und Extreme-Metal im Allgemeinen kam ich in meinen Teenager-Jahren, nachdem ich Bands wie METALLICA, MEGADETH, PANTERA, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY usw. kennengelernt hatte. Ich erinnere mich, dass ich damals anfing, Bands wie CHILDREN OF BODOM und OPETH zu hören, die Double Bass und einen rauen Gesang hatten, der mir wirklich auffiel, da er aggressiver war als die Bands, die ich gehört hatte, und ich war fast sofort verliebt. Metal ist mein Genre (ich bin manchmal ein einfacher Mann…), aber ich genieße sehr gerne Post-Rock, fast alles, was Steven Wilson in die Finger bekommen hat, und sogar etwas Alternative Rock wie die Band FEEDER.

Intention des Albums

MH: TEXAS ist ein sonniger Staat in den USA. Das Cover von der EP hingegen sieht sehr trist aus. Die Farben sind dunkel. Inmitten schwarzer Bäume türmt sich ein modernes Bürogebäude auf. Das Gebäude als Symbol der menschlichen Zivilisation in seiner trostlosen Nüchternheit in Kombination mit Bäumen als Symbol der Natur. Die Bäume sind schwarz ohne Blätter und wirken tot. Es wird das dystopische Gefühl vermittelt, dass die menschliche Zivilisation die Natur verdrängt und zerstört. Habe ich Recht? Bitte beschreib uns doch, was mit dem Bild und damit auch mit dem Album ausgedrückt werden soll.

C.H.: Ja, das ist richtig. Das Albumcover soll die brutalen Schöpfungen des Menschen darstellen, die wie ein scharfes Messer durch die Natur schneiden, sie auf ihrem Weg zerstört und in ihrem Schatten das verblassende Sternenlicht zurücklässt, das die universelle, göttliche Kraft im Universum repräsentiert. Das Konzept repräsentiert eine ziemlich düstere Sicht der Dinge im gegenwärtigen Paradigma auf diesem Planeten, und ich denke, der düstere künstlerische Stil, den Travis Smith einbezog, passt gut zu der Vision, die wir zu vermitteln versuchten.

Die Natur und Spiritualität

MH: Was bedeutet die Natur für Dich?

C.H.: Für mich bedeutet Natur die reine, majestätische, universelle Kraft, die in einer mächtigeren Art und Weise existiert als der Mensch sich vorzustellen vermag; sei es ein 20.000 Fuß hoher Berg, der aus der Landschaft herausragt, oder die zarte Feinheit einer Sonnenblume. Die natürliche Welt ist etwas viel Bedeutenderes als die kurze Zeit, die wir in ihr verbringen.

MH: Mir gefallen diese poetischen Texte auf dem Album. Sie sind sehr schön ausgearbeitet. Bist Du ein spiritueller Mensch?

C.H.: Ich würde sagen, ich bin eine spirituelle Person. Obwohl ich mich keinem bestimmten Glaubenssystem oder einer bestimmten Religion unterwerfe, glaube ich an eine höhere Organisation des Universums, die wir Menschen meiner Meinung nach vielleicht nie ganz verstehen werden.

Casey Hurd und sein „Baby“

MH: Der Song „Sacred Delusion“ ist für mich der atmosphärischste Track des Albums und erzeugt eine ungeheure Tiefe. Du hast mal erwähnt, dass dieser Song die längste Zeit in seiner Entstehung benötigt hat. Es ist auch das Lied, das Du mit Deinem Freund und Kollegen Toni Toivonen als Gastmusiker aufgenommen haben. Kannst Du unseren Lesern sagen, wo die Schwierigkeiten lagen?

C.H.: Der Song „In Sacred Delusion“ dauerte lange, vor allem wegen meiner eigenen Unentschlossenheit darüber, wohin das Lied gehen sollte. Ich habe mir zunächst den Refrain des Liedes ausgedacht und dann den Rest des Liedes darum herum geformt. Manche Lieder sind einfach so, obwohl sie nicht sehr technisch sind, brauchen sie Zeit, um sich zu formen und zu wachsen, und andere kommen schneller zusammen. Ich nehme an, für mich war es ein Lied, das mir so gut gefiel, dass ich sehr wählerisch war, welche Teile wohin gingen und wie es weiterging. Was die Zusammenarbeit mit Toni betrifft, so war das Lied zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits geschrieben, so dass es nur noch darum ging, dass er seinen Gesang aufnahm, was er meiner Meinung nach hervorragend gemacht hat.

Tradition und Moderne

MH: In dem Song „Cold Conception“ spielt das mongolische Streichinstrument „morin chuur“ (Pferdekopfgeige) eine Rolle. Bist Du ein Freund von ungewöhnlichen und traditionellen Instrumenten? Können wir erwarten, dass solche Instrumente von Zeit zu Zeit eine Rolle im Sound von HINAYANA spielen werden?

C.H.: Ich bin mit verschiedenen Arten traditioneller Instrumente einigermaßen vertraut, und da wir mit dem Ergebnis der „Pferdekopfgeige“ bei diesem Lied sehr zufrieden waren, könnte man erwarten, dass man in künftigen Liedern mehr von solchen Dingen hören wird. Allerdings greift die Band nicht auf eine alte Tradition oder eine bestimmte Kultur zurück, so dass unser Einsatz traditioneller Instrumente mehr damit zu tun hat, wie sie klingen, um bestimmte Stimmungen zu erzeugen, die sich auf das Lied beziehen, in dem sie vielleicht verwendet werden.

Ein Lichtschein im Dunkeln

MH: Das Instrumentalstück „Yet Here I Wait Forever“ ist ein leichtes, ja fast verträumtes Lied. Es stellt eine kleine Oase in den sonst eher düsteren Liedern dar. Wofür steht dieses Stück? Ist es ein kleiner Hoffnungsschimmer in einer dunklen Welt?

C.H.: Ich würde sagen, das Lied repräsentiert eine Art dunkle Schönheit in der unausweichlichen Entfaltung unserer eigenen Selbstzerstörung. Es hat einen hoffnungsvollen Klang. Es geht darum, mit der düsteren Welt, die uns umgibt, im Frieden zu sein und den aktuellen Stand der Dinge in der Welt zu akzeptieren, dem Hörer in der Mitte des EP eine Verschnaufpause zu gönnen und die düsteren Stimmungen der anderen Tracks zu kontrastieren.

Ruhe finden

MH: Es ist ziemlich heiß in Texas. In Austin gibt es einen großen See, der Kühlung bietet. Wann warst Du das letzte Mal am Town Lake? Wie kannst Du am besten abschalten und Ruhe finden?

C.H.: Komischerweise besuche ich den „Town Lake“ normalerweise nicht. Für mich ist der Ausstieg aus der Großstadt und weg von anderen Menschen die beste Möglichkeit, abzuschalten und der Hektik des Alltags zu entfliehen, weshalb ich eigentlich lieber den Canyon Lake besuche, weiter draußen auf dem Land in der Nähe der Kleinstadt New Braunfels, Texas.

Atmospheric melodic death metal

HINAYANA from Texas released their last full-length album „Order Divine“ in 2018 and caused such a stir that they were signed to Napalm Records. Now they satisfy the hunger of their fans with the EP „Death Of The Cosmic“. The EP is spread over 5 tracks with a playing time of 23 minutes. You could already hear

the strengths of the band

on the last album „Order Divine“. They have a knack for good melodies and create in their songs a perceptible deep atmosphere into which you can let yourself fall. Massive riffs are enmeshed by filigree guitar chords and create an epic component like you know it from e.g. PARADISE LOST. Even top-class guitar solos you don’t have to do without. The single output „Cold Conception“ shows impressively what the men are capable of.

The singer Casey Hurd gives the songs a dark intensity. Essential for the musical concept are also these quiet melodic passages, which loosen up the very massive sound. „Yet Here I Wait Forever“ is by no means a superfluous instrumental track, but fits perfectly into the overall picture and complements the music in an excellent way. Atmospheric keyboard synths in combination with the light and artful acoustic guitar-play enchant the listener until he is surrounded by heavy riffs and intense growls on „The Sacred Delusion“ again.

Impressive

the drums are also sounding, which I like very much throughout. Especially in the downtempo-song „In Sacred Delusion“ they appear vehemently. Unfortunately, the next song „Pitch Black Noise“ already marks the end of the EP. It will start off again violently dark. The song could already be heard on the first release „Endless“ in 2014. It was probably decided to record it again with new technical possibilities.

Conclusion

HINAYANA continue to build on their strengths and open up a dark death metal world with an impressive epic melodic component that does full justice to the appealing poetic lyrics. This majestic symbiosis of elements casts a spell over the listener. With this, HINAYANA skillfully and completely deservedly join the league of for example WOLFHEART or PARADISE LOST. On the negative side, the new output has a short playing time. We can only hope that the guys are already working on new material and maybe next year they will give us a complete album.

Atmosphärischer Melodic-Death-Metal

Nun stillen sie den Hunger der Fans erst einmal mit der EP „Death Of The Cosmic“. Die EP verteilt sich auf 5 Tracks mit einer Spielzeit von 23 Minuten.

Das Markenzeichen

der Band kristallisierte sich schon auf dem Album „Order Divine“ heraus. Sie haben ein Händchen für gute Melodien und erschaffen in ihren Songs eine fühlbare tiefe Atmosphäre, in die man sich fallen lassen kann. Massive Riffs werden von filigranen Gitarrenakkorden umgarnt und erzeugen eine epische Komponente wie man es z.B. von PARADISE LOST kennt. Sogar auf Gitarrensoli der Extraklasse muss man nicht verzichten. Der Singleoutput „Cold Conception“ zeigt sehr imponierend, was die Männer auf dem Kasten haben.

Der Sänger Casey Hurd growlt sich genüsslich düster durch die Songs und verleiht den Songs ein passende dunkle Intensität. Essentiell sind bei dem musikalischen Konzept ebenfalls diese ruhigen melodischen Passagen, die das sonst sehr wuchtige Sounddonnerwetter auflockern. „Yet Here I Wait Forever“ ist somit beileibe kein überflüssiger Instrumentaltrack, sondern fügt sich einwandfrei in das Gesamtbild ein und ergänzt die Musik auf vortreffliche Art und Weise. Stimmungsvolle Keyboardsynthies in Verbindung mit dem leichten kunstvollen akustischen Gitarrenspiel verzaubern den Hörer, bis er wieder bei „The Sacred Delusion“ von schweren Riffs und intensiven Growls umgeben wird.

Imponierend

ertönen des weiteren die Drums, welche mir durchweg sehr gut gefallen. Vor allem bei dem Downtempo-Song „In Sacred Delusion“ stechen diese besonders hervor. Leider wird mit dem nächsten Song „Pitch Black Noise“ schon das Ende der EP eingeleitet. Es wird noch mal heftig düster durchgestartet. Den Song gab es bereits auf dem ersten Release „Endless“ im Jahre 2014 zu hören. Man hat sich wohl entschieden diesen noch einmal mit neuen technischen Möglichkeiten aufzunehmen.

Fazit

HINAYANA bauen ihre Stärken weiter aus und eröffnen eine dunkle Death-Metal-Welt mit einer imponierenden epischen melodischen Komponente, die den ansprechenden und durchaus poetischen Texten in vollem Maße gerecht werden. Diese majestätische Symbiose der Elemente zieht den Hörer in seinen Bann. Damit reihen HINAYANA sich gekonnt und völlig verdient in die Liga von beispielsweise WOLFHEART oder PARADISE LOST ein. Negativ anzumerken ist die kurze Spielzeit des neuen Outputs. Kann man nur hoffen, dass die Jungs schon fleißig an neuem Material schrauben und uns vielleicht nächstes Jahr mit einem kompletten Album beehren werden.
