Papa Roach fragen „Who Do You Trust?“

Seit über 25 Jahren existieren Papa Roach nun und zählen mittlerweile zu den Veteranen dessen, was man damals Crossover nannte. Vergangene Woche, am 18. Januar 2019, erschien via Eleven Seven Music mit „Who Do You Trust?“ das zehnte Studioalbum von Papa Roach. Aufgenommen wurde das neue Album wie schon der Vorgänger „Crooked Teeth“ vom Produzententeam Nicholas „Ras“ Furlong (u.a. Blink-182, Good Charlotte, Avicii, Steve Aoki) sowie Colin „Colin Brittain“ Cunningham (Letzterer ist auch für den Mix von „Who Do You Trust?“ verantwortlich) im Steakhouse-Studio in Hollywood. Aber kann man Papa Roach denn noch vertrauen, dass sie Qualität abliefern und auch heute noch relevant sind? Oder sind sie satt und belanglos geworden? Das Video zum Titeltrack gibt hoffentlich einen ersten Aufschluss:

Papa Roach beginnen mit dem Ende

Am Anfang steht „The Ending“ mit elektronisch verzerrten Riffs. Der Gesang wechselt mit Rap-Parts, gut gemacht und wer Crossover mag, dem wird es gefallen. Das gilt auch für den zweiten Titel „Renegade Music“. Der trifft zwar nicht meinen persönlichen Geschmack, ist aber objektiv einfach gut. Überraschend ist dann für mich „Not The Only One“, viel Gesang, sehr ruhige Momente und erstaunlich wenig Verzerrung. Den Titeltrack gab es oben schon im Video und den finde ich richtig gut. Abwechslungsreich, interessante Gesangsharmonien vor dem Refrain. Ein richtiger Kracher! Im Gegensatz zu „Elevate“, das wieder überhaupt nicht meins ist. Das sagt aber nur etwas über meinen persönlichen Geschmack aus und nicht über die Qualität des Songs. Macht euch im Video unten einfach selber ein Bild. Aber, und das muss man Papa Roach lassen, die Platte ist verdammt vielfältig. „Come Around“ glänzt mit Melodien und vielen Hooks und stünde jeder Alternative Band gut zu Gesicht. Respekt, Papa Roach!

Papa Roach fühlen sich zuhause

„Feel Like Home“ schlägt in eine ähnliche Kerbe und ist definitiv radiotauglich. Bei „Problems“ wird das Tempo noch einmal gedrosselt und klingt fast poppig und ist sehr gefällig. Kann man auf jeden Fall gut hören und ist der Song zum Innehalten. Beim Beginn von „Top Of The World“ fragt man sich erst ob Papa Roach den Drive verloren haben, aber dann zieht der Song doch an und baut wieder vermehrt Rap Elemente ein. Mehr nach meinem Geschmack ist das arschtretende „I Suffer Well!!!“. Zwar noch nicht einmal anderthalb Minuten lang, aber dafür ist man dann wieder wach und bereit für die beiden letzten Songs. „Maniac“ hat nichts mit dem Song aus den Achtzigern zu tun, sondern ist erstklassiger Alternative-Crossover Stuff. „Better Than Life“ lässt mich in den ersten Takten mitwippen, driftet dann aber in eine Art Boyband Variante von Papa Roach ab und ist für mich der schwächste Song des Albums.

Papa Roach – vielfältig gut

Um zur Eingangsfrage zurückzukommen: Satt und belanglos sind Papa Roach definitiv nicht. Und wer so lange und so erfolgreich im Geschäft ist, hat seine Relevanz auch hinlänglich bewiesen. Davon abgesehen ist „Who Do You Trust?“ ein richtig gutes Album, das Papa Roach sehr vielfältig und abwechslungsreich zeigt. Mir gefällt nicht jeder Song, aber ich bin auch kein Crossover Fan und trotzdem würde ich mir die Platte kaufen. Altfans können sowieso bedenkenlos zugreifen und werden bestimmt auch noch etwas Neues entdecken. Aber auch Alt-Metaller, die über den Tellerrand blicken, können hier Gefallen finden. Also, kurzum: Papa Roach sind mit „Who Do You Trust?“ vielfältig gut und eine klare Kaufempfehlung.

Papa Roach Drummer Tony mit metal-heads.de im Interview

Im Rahmen der Veröffentlichung zu „Crooked Teeth“ ergab sich die Möglichkeit, mit Tony über die neue Scheibe zu reden. Unter anderem sprachen wir über die Single „Help“ und was er bzw. die Band den Fans sagen möchte, bei denen im Leben nicht immer alles glatt läuft:

I think one of the facts that draws our fans to our lyrical messages is that you’re not alone. We can’t express that enough. The song “Help” is a perfect representation of that message. No matter how bad things can get, people have to stay strong because the good that can come from overcoming depression, self worth, or mental health issues can change their lives. Can’t tell you how many times people tell us we saved their life or that our music and message gets them through every day. We were actually discussing with some old friends about a short tour with most of the early 2000 bands.

PAPA ROACH – Tony Palermo im Interview

Vor wenigen Tagen veröffentlichten Papa Roach ihr neues Album „Crooked Teeth“ über Eleven Seven Music. metal-heads.de schnappte sich Drummer Tony Palermo für ein Interview, um über das neue Album sowie eine spezielle Tour mit old friends from young years zu reden. Tony! I had the chance to listen to your new record and have to say, wow! The new record combines the best of the past 8 records in 1. Producer RAS reinvented the sound of the band with you guys. You tried things, which you never did before. For you as a drummer, what did you do differently or new from what you thought of „this couldn’t I do on the previous records“? Or what was a „new influence“ for you?

We took a step back with the drums and tried to simplify parts. There are times where the drums drop out but are programmed for dynamics. When the acoustic drums kick in it’s a powerful thing. But we’re working out ways to perform these tracks live. After all we are a rock band at our core. Can’t tell you how many times people tell us we saved their life or that our music and message gets them through every day

There´s one word on that record, that is appearing in a lot of the songs. The word is „curse“. You are playing with Papa Roach for nearly 10 years now . Can you tell us one situation, which was for you or the band a curse over the years?

When a band launches onto the scene, and in this case helps create a scene, that can be a curse. People are always looking to categorize bands so trying to shake the “New Metal” genre was the biggest curse. I believe this new record goes back to some of the rap roots but also pushes forward with a fresh, relevant style.

The song „Help“ consists of a deep message. A lot of people are struggling with several personal or daily problems like in the music video. What advice can you give those people to not give up?

20 years ago the band released the very very first record „old friends from young years“. Wouldn`t it be a nice gift for the fans to celebrate this anniversary with all albums of the bands history on vinyl as a collectors box?

I don’t believe the guys would be into going back that far, but anything can happen!

I know, that just the last 3 records came out on vinyl and also guess a lot of fans would love listen to „Metamorphosis“ or „Infest“ on that classic medium.

At some point it would be something special to release a vinyl box set. I know vinyl is picking up steam again and it’s definitely the format I started listening to my favorite old bands on. I still have all of my old records including a box of 45’s.

Some bands which are close and friends are doing some shows together now. Like KoRn and Limp Bizkit last december here in Europe. I know that Tye Zamora (ex- Alien Ant Farm) released a new record with his new band \’mēk\ and not all Papa Roach fans don´t know about the beginnings of both bands. Wouldn’t it be cool for the fans, to hook up Tye´s new band with Papa Roach and do a tour and call to it like the very first record „old friends from young years“?

We love Tye and you never know what could happen. I wish him the best with his new endeavours. We were actually discussing with some old friends about a short tour with most of the early 2000 bands. It would be a 7 or 8 band bill from back in the day. We’ll see!!

Papa Roach sind zurück und beglücken Fans und Kritiker am 19. Mai 2017 mit „Crooked Teeth“ – dem nun 9. Kapitel der Bandgeschichte. Wir von metal-heads.de besorgten uns das gute Teil und machen den Check, wie Jacoby Shaddix, Jerry Horton, Tobin Esperance und Tony Palermo sich schlagen.

Wir ziehen Papa Roach den Zahn im Soundcheck

Für einen Opener beginnt „Break The Fall“ für die Küchenschaben relativ ruhig. Dafür geht es direkt mit dem nachfolgenden Track deutlich mehr ab. Bereits 6 Monate vor der Veröffentlichung zum Album erschien die erste Single „Crooked Teeth“. Sie erinnert an die früheren Zeiten der Band mit einem 2017er Vibe. Was auffällt, viele elektronische Elemente wie schon auf dem Vorgänger „F.E.A.R.“ befinden sich in dem Song. Produzent RAS sagt über das Album:

„Die Idee war, die klassischen Elemente von Papa Roach, die jeder mag, zu nehmen und sie in eine moderne Version unseres Sounds zu verwandeln“.

Dies hört man bei dem Kracher „My Medication“ sehr deutlich, der zum einen sehr rockig aber auch verspielt durch die Samples daherkommt. Frontmann Jacoby beweist auf „Born For Greatness“, dass er das Rappen aus der „Infest“-Ära nicht verlernt hat und so wandern seine Reime gezielt über den pumpenden Elektrobeat. Eine besondere Geschichte verbindet die Band mit dem Lied „American Dreams“. Herr Shaddix sagt über den Song:

„Mein Vater ist Vietnam-Veteran und viele dieser Soldaten kehrten in ein Land zurück, in dem man sie nicht wieder in die Gesellschaft aufnahm oder sich über die Wirkung, die Krieg auf die Psyche hat, nicht bewusst war. Posttraumatische Belastungsstörung und der Zerfall amerikanischer Familien sind Themen, mit denen ich selbst umgehen musste und von denen ich weiß, dass sie auch andere betreffen. Vielleicht ist es das, was diese Platte tatsächlich mutig macht: Als es darum ging darüber zu schreiben, was mich bewegt, gab es nichts, was tabu war.“

Man holte mit der Sängerin Skylar Grey namhafte Verstärkung, um dem sentimentalen und emotionalen Song „Periscope“ das gewisse Etwas zu geben. Fans des Track „Gravity“ werden hier voll auf ihre Kosten kommen. Im Anschluss wird es wieder rockiger. Mit „Help“ zeigen Papa Roach, dass die Band auch Hymnen für das Radio schreiben kann, ohne dabei ihre Wurzeln zu verraten *Linkin Park, Hust*. Die Band liefert mit „Sunrise Trailer Park“ eines der wohl ruhigsten Lieder auf dem Album. Der Song erhält durch Machine Gun Kelly einen weiteren Gastbeitrag auf dieser Platte. Zum Schluss liefern die Jungs mit „Traumatic“ und „Nine Of The Above“ richtige Krache, die bei den Fans garantiert gut ankommen werden.

Das metal-heads.de Fazit

Anno 2017 bietet Jacoby und seine Band einen Vibe aus Old + New School. Als eine der wenigen Gruppen der 00er schafft man es das beste von den letzten 8 Platten auf dem Album Nummer 9 zu vereinen. Man darf gespannt sein, welche Tracks man den Fans Live präsentieren wird, bei der hohen Dichte an Hits.
