BEHÖLDER (Facebook) kommen nicht nur mit einem außergewöhnlichen Bandnamen daher, sondern können auf ihrem Debüt mit einem kolossalen Sound mächtig auftrumpfen. Dabei liebäugeln sie auch gerne mit Sounds aus dem Bereich Power Metal. Die Songs erzählen Geschichten aus der Fantasiewelt von Dungeons & Dragons, die jedem Fantasy-Fan ein Begriff sein sollte. Neben dem Brettspiel wurden auch unzählige Geschichten in Büchern, Computerspielen und Filmen erzählt. Und nun entführen uns BEHÖLDER auf eine musikalische Reise voller Abenteuer mit ihrem Album „In The Temple Of The Tyrant“.

Das Cover-Artwork fängt dann auch gekonnt das Album-Thema ein. Man sieht eine Szenerie von düsteren Katakomben mit einem Monster, dass nur dunkelsten Albträumen entspringen kann. Es tummeln sich in Roben verhüllte dunkle Gestalten, die das Monster in einem von brennenden Säulen erleuchteten Höhlentempel anbeten. So wird man schon mal gut eingestimmt.

Sodann ertönt der Opener „A Pale Blood Sky“ und ihr werdet mit Wucht in das Abenteuer hineingestoßen. Massive Riffs und mächtige Drums erschüttern die Erde. Hier fällt sofort schon die satte und druckvolle Produktion auf. Dann gerät der Song in etwas ruhigere Gefilde, um Sänger John Yelland eine Bühne zu bieten. John überzeugt auf Anhieb mit seiner melodischen Stimme. Doch er kann sich auch durchaus mit einer kraftvollen Darbietung in den energischen Parts behaupten. Sehr gelungen finde ich z.B. den Part, wo nach Minute 03:40 das Tempo härter angezogen wird. Hin und wieder fühle ich mich an Blind Guardian erinnert. Grandiose Albumeröffnung!

Die Songs werden mit viel Pathos vorgetragen, verlieren sich aber nicht darin. BEHÖLDER erhalten sich zum Glück noch scharfe Ecken und Kanten, damit der Sound noch eine knackige Struktur bekommt. Dies wird auch beim zweiten Song „Dungeons Crawl“ wunderbar realisiert, der zwischendurch stark nach vorne treibt. Wunderschöne Leads verfeinern das Erlebnis zu einem wahren Ohrenschmaus.

Und während man das Album so genießt, überraschen BEHÖLDER in der Mitte des Album beim Song „Eyes Of The Deep“ dann noch ein weiteres Mal mit drastischen Parts, in denen eine beängstigende Finsternis emporsteigt. Kein Geringerer als Gastsänger Tomi Joutsen von Amorphis ist für diese einschlagende Performance verantwortlich. Ein unheimlich cooles Feature in diesem düsteren mysteriösen Song. Diese Growls sind ein Element, dass ich mir durchaus häufiger im Sound vorstellen könnte, weil diese noch mal eine ganze andere dunkle unheimliche Atmosphäre erschaffen können.

BEHÖLDER gehen auch auf der zweiten Hälfte des Albums die Ideen nicht aus und überzeugen bis zum Ende mit hochkarätigen Songs, die allesamt mit viel Liebe zum Detail und hervorragender technischer Darbietung auf ganzer Linie überzeugen. Das ganze Album begeistert mit einer musikalisch überschwänglichen Opulenz, die sich in faszinierenden Abenteuern ergießt. Also tretet der Gilde von BEHÖLDER bei und begleitet sie in ihre fantasievolle Welt. Es lohnt sich!

BEHÖLDER (Facebook) not only have an unusual band name, but also boast a colossal sound on their debut. They also like to flirt with sounds from power metal. The songs tell stories from the fantasy world of Dungeons & Dragons, which every fantasy fan should be familiar with. In addition to the board game, countless stories have also been told in books, computer games and films. And now BEHÖLDER take us on a musical journey full of adventure with their album „In The Temple Of The Tyrant“.

The cover artwork skillfully captures the album theme. You see a scene of gloomy catacombs with a monster that can only spring from the darkest nightmares. Dark persons clad in robes cavort about, worshipping the monster in a cave temple illuminated by burning fires. It’s a good way to get in the mood for the album.

Then the opener „A Pale Blood Sky“ plays and you are thrust into the adventure with force. Massive riffs and powerful drums shake the earth. The rich and powerful production is immediately noticeable. The song then moves into calmer regions to give singer John Yelland a stage. John immediately impresses with his melodic voice. But he can also hold his own with a powerful performance in the energetic parts. For example, I think the part where the tempo picks up after 03:40 is very successful. Every now and then I feel reminded of Blind Guardian. A great album opener!

The songs are performed with a lot of pathos, but don’t get lost in it. Fortunately, BEHÖLDER still retain sharp corners and edges to give the sound a crisp structure. This is also wonderfully realized in the second song „Dungeons Crawl“, which drives forward strongly in between. Beautiful leads refine the experience into a real feast for the ears.

And while you enjoy the album like this, BEHÖLDER surprise you once again in the middle of the album with the song „Eyes Of The Deep“ with drastic parts in which a frightening darkness rises. None other than guest vocalist Tomi Joutsen from Amorphis is responsible for this striking performance. An incredibly cool feature in this song in this dark mysterious song. These growls are an element that I could definitely imagine more often in the sound, because they can create a whole other dark, eerie atmosphere.

BEHÖLDER don’t run out of ideas on the second half of the album either and continue to impress right to the end with top-class songs, all of which are convincing across the board with great attention to detail and outstanding technical performance. The whole album inspires with a musically exuberant opulence that pours out in fascinating adventures. So join the guild of BEHÖLDER and accompany them into their imaginative world. It’s worth it!
