MARIANAS REST haben mit „Fata Morgana“ ein herausragendes Album (Review ) geschaffen. Ein Album, das einen bleibenden Eindruck bei mir hinterlassen und mich in seinen Bann gezogen hat. Auch die lyrischen Texte sind gut durchdacht und anspruchsvoll. Sie lassen Raum für eigene Interpretationen. Es ist mir daher eine Freude, mit einem Interview tiefer in die Welt von MARIANAS REST einzutauchen und mehr über die Band und das Album zu erfahren.

Nico (Gitarrist) und Jaakko (Sänger) von MARIANAS REST plaudern aus dem Nähkästchen und offenbaren sehr interessante Sichtweisen. Leider konnte ich das Interview nicht dort führen, wo sich Finnen im allgemeinen alle sehr sehr gerne aufhalten, nämlich in der…

Sauna.

MH: Ihr kommt aus Finnland, einem Land, das reich an Traditionen ist. Dort ist es zum Beispiel das Saunieren eine echte Tradition. Die Finnen sind diesbezüglich als harte Kerle bekannt.

Folgen Ihr auch dieser Tradition?

Nico: Ja, aber klar doch

Jaakko: Alle großen Entscheidungen treffen wir entweder in der Sauna oder nach der Sauna; niemals vor der Sauna. Einige von uns sind in der Sauna geboren und aufgewachsen.

MH: Was war die härteste oder auch schönste Saunaerfahrung?

Nico: Sommernächte in einer Hütte am Meer oder am See. Eine gute Sauna ist immer etwas Besonderes.

Jaakko: In der Sauna zu schlafen ist nie eine gute Wahl. Die schönsten Momente sind vielleicht im Hochsommer am Seeufer, mit Blick auf eine Sonne, die nie untergeht.

MH: Ist die Sauna auch ein Ort der Kreativität in Form von Musik oder nur der sozialen Entspannung?

Nico: Auf jeden Fall Entspannung!

Jaakko: Es ist wirklich kein guter Ort, um Dinge zu denken, und so wie ich es sehe, muss man denken, um kreativ zu werden. Also bedeutet es für mich Entspannung. Aber danach, wenn das Blut in deinem Körper zu zirkulieren beginnt, ist eine ganz andere Sache.

Der Bandname

Für alle, die Euch noch nicht kennen und sich über den Namen wundern:

Wie seid Ihr auf den Bandnamen MARIANAS REST gekommen?

Nico: Es war das Ergebnis einer bierseligen Session. Wir haben versucht, einen Namen zu finden, der unsere Musik widerspiegelt; etwas Dunkles, Tiefes, Druckvolles und Schweres. Wir kreisten dann um die Idee von Marianas Trench, wollten aber unseren eigenen Twist dazu haben.

Napalm Records im digitalen Mülleimer

MH: Ich war ein bisschen überrascht, dass ihr bereits bei einem so großen Label wie Napalm Records unter Vertrag seid. Wie kam das zustande?

Nico: Es war Ende 2019 und wir hatten eine Party mit der Band. Wir versuchten, unseren widerwilligen Sänger Jaakko davon zu überzeugen, unsere alten Alben an einen Haufen Plattenfirmen zu schicken und zu fragen, ob sie an einer Zusammenarbeit mit uns für unser neues Album interessiert wären; nur um mal die Lage zu checken. Wir hatten zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht einmal neue Demos. Schließlich konnten wir Jaakko davon überzeugen, sie zu schicken, und Napalm hat geantwortet. Sie wollten die Demos hören, sobald sie fertig waren. Schließlich schickten wir ihnen die Demos und warteten auf eine Antwort.

Die Zeit verging und wir hörten nichts mehr von ihnen, also dachten wir natürlich, dass die Demos nicht gut genug waren. Aber nach ein paar Wochen ging jemand von uns durch unseren Junkmail-Ordner und da war sie, die Antwort. Wir dachten, wir hätten es vermasselt und dass sie auf keinen Fall an unserer Band interessiert sein würden, da wir nicht einmal auf eine E-Mail antworten konnten. Zum Glück waren sie es und hier sind wir. Eine Wahnsinnsgeschichte.

Jaakko: Ein paar Tage und unser Junkfolder hätte sich automatisch geleert. Da haben wir also ein bisschen Glück gehabt. Vielleicht müssen wir eine Art „Wie bediene ich die E-Mail“-Kurs belegen. Aber nachdem wir mit dem Label ins Gespräch gekommen sind, war klar, dass dies der richtige Weg ist. Alles verlief sehr reibungslos und die Zusammenarbeit hat tatsächlich sehr viel Spaß gemacht. Wir haben uns auch nie in dieser Position vorgestellt. Das ist wie ein wahr gewordener Traum.

Neues Label, alles auf Null?

MH: Bedeutete der Wechsel zu Napalm Records eine Neuorientierung oder einen Neuanfang oder habt ihr einfach weitergemacht wie bisher?

Nico: Nein, ich denke nicht, dass wir unsere Arbeitsweise verändert haben, außer dass wir viel mehr und viel härter arbeiten als je zuvor. Natürlich verschiebt diese Art von Sprung den Fokus noch mehr auf die Band und die Musik.

Jaakko: In gewisser Weise ist das ein Neuanfang, denn ich denke, viele Leute hatten vorher noch nie von uns gehört. Aber es hat die Art, wie wir Musik machen, nicht beeinflusst.

MH: Hattet Ihr die Songs schon vor dem Wechsel in Arbeit?

Nico: Ja, wir waren schon ziemlich fertig mit dem Album, als das eigentliche Signing stattfand. Obwohl die Verhandlungen schon stattgefunden hatten, bevor das Album fertig war. Die ersten E-Mails wurden ausgetauscht, noch bevor wir irgendwelche Demos hatten.

MH: Ist der Druck bei einem so großen Label höher?

Nico: Ich fühle es noch nicht. Vielleicht wird mir das Ausmaß der Dinge irgendwann bewusst. Ich versuche, meine Augen auf die Straße zu richten und wie gewohnt weiterzuarbeiten.

Jaakko: Wenn Du anfängst, zu viel über diese Art von Dingen nachzudenken, könntest Du dich tief festfahren. Am besten macht man einfach so weiter wie bisher und versucht, Tag für Tag ein bisschen besser zu werden. Wir haben nicht wirklich Druck oder so etwas gespürt.

Fata Morgana

MH: „Fata Morgana“ ist ein Begriff, den man eher aus der Wüste kennt. Illusionen werden durch extreme Temperaturen und Luftspiegelungen erzeugt.

Wie bezieht sich dieser Begriff auf Euer Album?

Jaakko: In unserem Fall beziehen sich die extremen Temperaturen auf Kälte. Wir haben uns dabei Orte wie die Antarktis vorgestellt. Die lebensfeindlichsten Umgebungen, sogar im Vergleich zu Wüsten. Die Geschichte des Albums handelt von einem Mann, der sich selbst verloren hat, zusammengebrochen ist und auf dieser Platte beginnt, sich neu aufzubauen. Er begibt sich auf eine Reise ins Exil, weg von seinem früheren Leben, das ihn krank gemacht hat. Auf dem Weg dorthin versucht er herauszufinden, warum alles passiert ist. Er findet heraus, dass es daran lag, dass die Kälte der Welt ihn gefühllos machte und die Art, wie er sieht und denkt, verzerrte. Das ist es, wofür „Fata Morgana“ auf diesem Album steht.

Die Bedeutung der Texte

MH: Ich persönlich denke, dass Texte wichtig sind, besonders wenn sie gut geschrieben sind. Dadurch bekommt man einen anderen Zugang zu den Songs. Und Ihre Texte sind mir sehr positiv aufgefallen. Sie verwenden eine bildhafte Sprache und Metaphern, die Raum für individuelle Interpretationen lassen.

Wer ist verantwortlich für die Texte?

Nico: Es ist eine Gruppenarbeit in unserer Band. Aber Jaakko ist das Mastermind.

Jaakko: Meistens können sie mir die Schuld geben, aber jeder darf mitreden. Wir versuchen, ein bisschen vage zu sein und den Zuhörern Raum für eigene Interpretationen zu geben.

MH: Was sagt Ihr zu Kritikern, die behaupten, dass die Texte nicht so wichtig sind, wenn man mit Growls und Schreien sowieso nicht alles verstehen kann? Wie seht Ihr das?

Nico: Ich finde, dass es etwas ist, an das sich die Ohren gewöhnen und man lernt, den Text auch im Growling zu finden. Aber es ist nicht für jeden etwas. Für diejenigen, die sich nicht darauf konzentrieren wollen, die Texte durch Hören oder Lesen herauszufinden, gibt es tonnenweise wunderbare Musik da draußen. In unserem Fall denke ich, dass die Texte genauso wichtig für die Musik sind, wie die Gitarren, das Schlagzeug oder jedes andere Instrument, was das betrifft. Hört Euch einfach an, was Euch glücklich macht.

Jaakko: Ich habe diese Diskussion schon oft geführt und finde sie ein wenig irritierend, da die lyrischen Botschaften für mich immer eine große Bedeutung hatten. Lyrics können entweder ein ansonsten gutes Album ruinieren oder das Album von gut zu großartig erheben. Ich möchte wissen, was die Geschichte ist, um mich komplett darauf beziehen zu können. Natürlich kann es manchmal schwierig sein, die Lyrics durch Growls zu hören. Zum Glück liegen die Texte den Albumcovern bei, so dass man die Lücken ausfüllen kann.

Persönliche Verbindungen zu den Texten

MH: Die bildhafte, metaphorische Sprache lässt dem Leser/Zuhörer viel Raum für Interpretationen.

Wie ist es für den Autor der Texte?

Jaakko: Persönlich habe ich immer die Art von Musik genossen, die viele verschiedene Bedeutungen haben kann. Keine davon ist falsch. Meine Interpretation ist genauso gut wie Eure. Ich mag es, Gespräche über Texte zu führen, und es ist immer schön zu hören, dass jemand etwas völlig Neues in ihnen sieht. Eigentlich ist das eines der schönsten Komplimente, die man bekommen kann, denn es kostet Mühe, einen Song auf diese Weise zu analysieren.

MH: Welche Geschichten verbergen sich dahinter?

Jaakko: Im Grunde drehte sich alles, was wir getan haben, um das Gefühl der Nichtigkeit und dieses hohle Gefühl, das man in einer Welt bekommen kann, in der man nicht mehr ums Überleben kämpfen muss. Diese Art von Loch kann man nicht mit sozialen Medien füllen. Nihilistische Grübeleien, ob das, was wir tun, wirklich etwas bedeutet und ob wir jemals eine Spur in der Welt hinterlassen werden. Dann gibt es da auch noch eine Menge persönliches Zeug. Als wir zum Beispiel „Ruins“ geschrieben haben, machten fast alle von uns in der Band eine schwierige Phase in ihrem Leben durch. Beziehungen und solche Dinge, aber ich fühle mich wirklich nicht wohl dabei, sie zu erklären. Man kann es auf dem Album hören und jeder kann seine eigene Analyse machen.

Die Schönheit in der Dunkelheit

MH: Die ausdrucksstarken Texte sind dunkel und melancholisch, passend zur Musik. Viele Musiker, die ich bereits interviewt habe, sagen, dass es natürlich vor allem persönliche Erfahrungen sind, aber sie bekommen auch viel Inspiration von Reisen in die Natur, die auch in Eurem Video zu „South Of Vostok“ eine wichtige Rolle spielt.

Wie ist Euer Verhältnis zur Natur?

Nico: Nun, ja. Die Musik kommt mehr als alles andere aus dem täglichen Leben. Als Finne, der eigentlich nie in einer richtigen Stadt gelebt hat, hat man zwangsläufig eine Verbindung zur Natur, wir leben ja quasi im Wald. Aber ist das eine treibende Kraft für mich? Das kann ich nicht bestätigen.

Jaakko: Es ist wichtig, einen Ort zu haben, an dem man sich von allem anderen zurückziehen kann. Eine Hütte oder etwas anderes, wo der Lärm der Welt verblasst. Und natürlich gibt es die Schönheit der Natur, aber ich denke, man kann auch in städtischen Umgebungen viel Schönheit finden. Meistens haben hässliche Dinge eine schöne Seite, wenn man genau hinschaut. Eigentlich ist es das, was wir in unserer Musik zu erreichen versuchen: aus der Dunkelheit etwas Schönes herauszuholen.

Das bizzare Video

MH: Das Video zu „Glow From The Edge“ unterscheidet sich grundlegend von dem Video zu „South Of Vostok“. Eure Liebe zum Detail, zur Botschaft und Geschichte der Songs kommt in diesem Video zum Tragen! Neben dem musikalischen Auftritt ist es auch ein visuell intensives Highlight!

Erzählt uns ein wenig über die Ideen und Hintergründe zu diesem Video!

Nico: Bei diesem Video hatten wir tatsächlich eine Crew, die an dem Video gearbeitet hat. Sie schrieben das Video und produzierten es. Wir waren nur am Set, um hübsch für die Kamera auszusehen und aus dem Weg zu gehen…

Wir hatten den Luxus, bei unseren vorherigen Videos mit großartigen Leuten zu arbeiten, von denen wir wussten, dass sie alle talentiert und professionell sind. Dieses Mal haben wir beschlossen, ihnen einfach den Song und das Albumcover zu geben und sie das Steuer übernehmen zu lassen.

Jaakko: Das Video ist die Vision unserer großartigen Crew. Wir gaben ihnen einfach den Song und sagten ihnen, sie sollten es drehen. Am Ende war es ziemlich beängstigend, da wir nicht wirklich wussten, was sie vorhatten. Es stellte sich heraus, dass sie genau wussten, was sie taten. Ich liebe es, wie es das Gefühl des Songs einfängt. Die Geschichte handelt davon, wie unwichtige Dinge uns manchmal locken. Schließlich kann man sich wirklich verirren, wenn man „dem Schein“ lange genug folgt.

Bedeutung des Logos

MH: In dem Video zeichnet ihr auch euer Logo in eine Schüssel voller Sand. Hat das Bandlogo eine besondere Bedeutung?

Nico: Das Logo ist die Idee einer künstlerischen Eminenz aus unserer Heimatstadt Kotka namens Filipp Diatchenko Jasenovich. Er ist wahrscheinlich der Einzige, der etwas Licht in die Angelegenheit bringen kann.

Jaakko: So wie ich es sehe, repräsentiert der Schnitt in der Mitte die Tiefe. Wenn man in die Musik eintaucht, kann man am Ende einen langen Weg durch die Dunkelheit zurücklegen. Für mich repräsentiert die Kreisform den Ouroboros und die zyklische Art und Weise, wie sich alles wiederholt, obwohl es manchmal Anfänge und Enden gibt. Auf dem Video repräsentiert der Sand bedeutungslose Aufgaben. Die Band nimmt sich viel Zeit, um die Figuren zu zeichnen, aber letztendlich ist alles umsonst, wenn der Sand weggeschüttet wird.

Die Gastmusiker

MH: Ihr habt auf dem Album mit zwei Gastmusikern gearbeitet, Lindsay Matheson und Timo Virkkala, die eine zusätzliche besondere Tiefe und Atmosphäre schaffen.

Wie habt Ihr zusammengefunden?

Nico: Timo arbeitete mit uns an unserem letzten Album „Ruins“, und wir wussten, was für ein großartiger Musiker er ist und wie gut sein Spiel zu unseren Songs passt. Also haben wir uns überlegt, seine Cello-Magie schon auf der Demo-Phase in die Songs einzubringen. Ich denke, er hat einen Killer-Job gemacht!

Lindsay in diese Musik zu involvieren, war die Idee unseres Produzenten Teemu Aalto. Wir hatten ein Produktionscamp, wie wir es immer vor Albumaufnahmen machen, bei dem wir die Songs mit Teemu in einer einsamen Hütte mitten im Wald durchgehen. Dort fingen wir an, darüber nachzudenken, etwas anderes in die Songs einzubringen, ein neues Element. Da kam uns die Idee mit der unheimlichen Sirenenstimme. Teemu hatte mit Lindsay gearbeitet, also schlug er vor, dass wir sie fragen sollten. Ich bin froh, dass wir das getan haben, und ich bin froh, dass sie mit an Bord war. Was für ein Profi und was für eine Stimme!

MH: Werdet Ihr weiterhin mit Gastmusikern arbeiten oder werden sie Euch eventuell dauerhaft verstärken oder erweitern?

Nico: Wer weiß, was passieren wird. Aber solche Pläne sind bisher nicht gemacht worden.

MARIANAS REST have created an outstanding album with „Fata Morgana“. An album that left a lasting impression on me and captivated me. The lyrical texts are also well thought-out and sophisticated. They leave room for own interpretations. It is therefore a pleasure for me to dive deeper into the world of MARIANAS REST with an interview and to learn more about the band and the album.

Sauna.

MH: You come from Finland, a country rich in tradition. There, for example, taking a sauna is a real tradition. Finns are known as tough guys in this case.

Do you also follow this tradition?

Nico: Yes, of course!

Jaakko: We make all the big decisions either in the sauna or after the sauna. Never before the sauna. Some of us were born and raised in the sauna.

MH: What was your toughest or most beautiful sauna experience?

Nico: Summer nights on a sea or lakeside cabin and a good sauna is always something special.

Jaakko: Sleeping in the sauna is never a good choice. The most beautiful moments are maybe in the midsummer by the lakeside, watching a sun that never sets.

MH: Is the sauna also a place of creativity in terms of music or just social relaxation?

Nico: Relaxation definitely.

Jaakko: It really is not a good place to think things and the way I see it you have to think to become creative. So for me it means relaxation. But afterwards, when the blood begins to circulate in your body, is a whole different thing.

The bandname

MH: For all those who don’t know you yet and are wondering about the name.

How did your band name MARIANAS REST come about?

Nico: It was a result of a beer fumed storming session. We were trying to come up with a name that reflects our music. Something dark, deep, pressuring and heavy. We then circled around the idea of Marianas trench but wanted to have our own twist to it. 

The funny thing with Napalm Records

MH: I was a bit surprised that you have already been signed to such a big label like Napalm Records.

How did that come about?

Nico: It was the end of 2019 and we had a party with the band. We tried to convince our reluctant singer Jaakko to send our old albums to a bunch of record labels and ask if they would be interested in working with us on our new album. Just to test the waters. We actually didn’t even have any new demos at that point. Eventually we were able to convince Jaakko to send them and Napalm replied. They wanted to hear the demos once they were done. Eventually we sent them the demos and waited for a response.

Time went by and we didn’t hear back from them so we naturally thought the demos were not good enough. But after a few weeks someone of us went through our junkmail folder and there it was, the reply. We thought that we had screwed up and there is no way they would be interested in our band since we couldn’t even reply to an e-mail. Luckily they were and here we are. One hell of a story.

Jaakko: A few days and our junkfolder would have emptied itself. So we had a bit of luck there. Maybe we need to take some sort of “how to operate the e-mail” courses. But after we got into talking with the label, it was clear that this was the right path to take. Everything has been very smooth and working together has actually been a lot of fun. We never pictured us in this position either. This is like a dream come true.

New label, new beginning?

MH: Did the change to Napalm Records mean a reorientation or a new beginning or did you just carry on as before?

Nico: No, I don’t think we have changed the way we work other than we have been working a whole lot more and way harder than ever before. Of course this kind of a leap shifts your focus even more to the band and the music. 

Jaakko: In a way this is a new beginning since I think a lot of  people had never heard of us before this. But it has not affected the way we do music.

MH: Did you already have the songs in progress before the change?

Nico: Yes we were pretty much ready with the album when the actual signing took place. Although negotiations had taken place before the album was ready. The first e-mails were changed even before we had any demos.

MH: Is the pressure higher with such a big label?

Nico: I don’t feel it yet. Maybe the magnitude of things will sink in eventually. I try to keep my eyes on the road and keep on working as usual.

Jaakko: If you start thinking about these sorts of things too much, you might dig yourself deep. Best to just carry on what you were doing and try to become a bit better day by day. We haven’t really felt pressure or anything like that.

Fata Morgana

MH: „Fata Morgana“ is a term more familiar from the desert. Illsuions are created by extreme temperatures and mirages.

How does this term relate to your album?

Jaakko: In our case the extreme temperatures refer to cold. We pictured places like Antarctica while doing this. The most hostile environments even compared to deserts. The story of the album is about a man who has lost himself, broken down and on this record starts to build himself anew. He takes a journey into exile away from the former life that made him sick. Along the path he tries to figure out why everything happened. He figures out it was because the cold of the world made him numb and distorted the way he sees and thinks. That is what “Fata Morgana” stands for on this album.

The importance of lyrics

MH: Personally, I think lyrics are important, especially if they are well written. It gives a different approach to the songs. And I noticed your lyrics quite positively. They use figurative language and metaphors that leave room for individual interpretations.

Who is responsible for the lyrics?

Nico: It is a group effort in our band. But Jaakko is the mastermind.

Jaakko: Mostly you can blame me, but everyone gets to pitch in. We try to be a bit vague and give the listeners space to make their own interpretations.

MH: What do you say to critics who claim that the lyrics are not that important if you can’t understand everything with growls and screams anyway?

Nico: I find that it is something that your ears get used to and you learn to find the lyrics in the growling also. But it’s not for everyone. To those who don’t want to focus on finding out the lyrics by listening or by reading them, there is tons and tons of marvellous music out there. In our case I think the lyrics are just as important to the music as is guitars drums or any instrument for that matter. Just listen to whatever makes you happy. 

Jaakko: I have had this discussion many times and find it a bit irritating since lyrical messages have always had a big importance for me. Lyrics can either ruin an otherwise good album or elevate the album from being good to great. I want to know what the story is to completely relate to it. Of course it sometimes can be hard to hear the lyrics through growls. Luckily the lyrics come with the album covers so you get to fill in the blanks.

Personal view on the lyrics

MH: The figurative metaphorical language leaves a lot of room for interpretation for the reader/listener.

What is it like for the author of the texts?

Jaakko: Personally I have always enjoyed the kind of music that can have many different meanings. None of them are wrong. My interpretation is as good as yours. I like having conversations about lyrics and it is always nice to hear someone hear something completely new in them. Actually that is one of the nicest compliments you can get since it takes effort to analyse a song in that way.

MH: What stories are hidden behind them?

Jaakko: Basically everything we have done has revolved around feelings of nothingness and this hollow feeling that you can get in a world where you no longer need to struggle to survive. You cannot fill that sort of hole with social media. Nihilistic ponderings if nothing we do really means anything and if we will ever leave a mark in the world. Then there is a lot of personal stuff in there also. For example when writing Ruins, I think almost all of us in the band were going through a rough phase in their lives. Relationships and that sort of things but I really don’t feel comfortable explaining them through. It can be heard on the album and everyone gets to make their own analysis.

Inspiration

MH: The expressive lyrics are dark and melancholic, in keeping with the music. Many musicians I have already interviewed say that it is mostly personal experiences, of course, but they also get a lot of inspiration from trips to nature, which also plays an important role in your video for „South Of Vostok“.

So what is your relationship with nature?

Nico: Well, yeah. The music comes from everyday life more than anything else. As a Finn who has really never lived in a proper city you are bound to have a connection with nature, we basically live in the forest. But is it a driving force for me? I can’t say it is.

Jaakko: It is important to have a place to withdraw from everything else. A cabin or something else where the noise of the world fades. And of course there is the beauty of nature but I think you can find lots of beauty in urban environments also. Most of the time ugly things have a beautiful side to them if look closely. Actually that is what we try to accomplish in our music: to bring out something beautiful from the dark.

The bizarre video

MH: The video for „Glow From The Edge“ is fundamentally different from the video for „South Of Vostok“.  However, your love for details and for the message and story of the songs also comes into play in this video! Besides the musical appearance, it is also a visually intense highlight!

Tell us a little about the ideas and background to this video!

Nico: Actually on this video we had a crew working on the video. They wrote the video and produced it. We were just on the set to look pretty for the camera and stay out of the way..

We have had the luxury of working with awesome people on our previous videos that we knew were all talented and professional. So this time we decided to just hand them the song the album cover art and let them take the wheel.

Jaakko: The video is the vision of our awesome crew. We just gave them the song and told them to go nuts. It was pretty scary eventually since we didn’t really know what they were up to. Turned out that they knew exactly what they were doing. I love the way it captures the feel of the song. The storyline is about how non important things sometimes lure us. Eventually you can get really lost if you follow “the glow” long enough.

Meaning of the logo

MH: In the video you also draw your logo in a bowl full of sand. Does the band logo have a special meaning?

Nico: The logo is the brainchild of an artistic eminence from our hometown Kotka called Filipp Diatchenko Jasenovich. He is probably the only one who can shed some light into the matter.

Jaakko: The way I see it, the cut in the middle represents the deep. If you dive into the music, you can end up travelling a long way through darkness. For me the circle form represents ouroboros and the cyclical way everything repeats itself although there sometimes are beginnings and endings. On the video the sand represents meaningless chores. The band takes a long time to draw the figures but eventually it all is for nothing as the sand gets poured.

The guest musicians

MH: You worked with two guest musicians on the album, Lindsay Matheson and Timo Virkkala, which create an additional special depth and atmosphere.

How did this come about?

Nico: Timo worked with us on our last album „Ruins“ and we knew how a great musician he is and how well his playing fits our songs. So we started thinking about involving his cello magic on the songs on the demo stage already. I think he did a killer job!

Involving Lindsay to this music was the idea of our producer Teemu Aalto. We had a production camp like we always do before album recordings where we go through the songs with Teemu on an isolated cabin in the middle of a forest. There we started thinking about involving something else to the songs, a new element. That’s where the idea of the eerie siren voice came. Teemu had worked with Lindsay , so he suggested, we would ask her. I’m glad we did and I’m glad she was on board. What a professional and what a voice!

MH: Will you continue to work with guest musicians or will you possibly strengthen or expand permanently?

Nico: Who knows what will happen? But no such plans have been made.

Melodic DEATH/DOOM-Metal

Der Norden ist immer wieder ein Garant für fantastische Metal-Bands. Aus dem Bereich wurden uns in letzter Zeit so einige dunkle Schätze dargereicht. Letztes Jahr waren es beispielsweise KAUNIS KUOLEMATON (Finnland), DRACONIAN (Schweden) oder RED MOON ARCHITECT (Finnland). MARIANAS REST (Facebook ) aus Finnland machen mit ihrem neuen Album „Fata Morgana“ (VÖ 12.03.2021) da keine Ausnahme und reihen sich in der Aufstellung hochkarätiger Alben ein.

MARIANAS REST bewegen sich unter dem gleichen melancholischen Deckmantel, nur eben auf ihre Weise. Und im folgenden finden wir heraus, was es mit Sound von MARIANAS REST auf sich hat.

Im dunklen See

schweben wir unter einer Oberfläche der Melancholie, wo nur das Mondlicht kalt und weiß die Szenerie mit schimmernden Reflektionen auf dem Wasser erhellt. Wolken treiben ihr schwarzes Spiel und rauben der Nacht das letzte Licht, so dass die Finsternis Einzug erhält. Donnergrollen lässt die Luft erzittern. Die Atmosphäre knistert vor elektrisierender Spannung, wenn

„Fata Morgana“

aus der Dunkelheit emporsteigt. Der Opener „Sacrificial“ fängt den Hörer behutsam melodisch ein, wiegt ihn hin und her, um ihn dann mit einem kraftvollen schwarzen Strudel weiter runter in das Dunkle zu ziehen. Sänger Jaakko Mäntymaa wechselt in seinem Gesang zwischen dunklen Growls und drastischen Screams, die mit der Energie eines Gewitters in Euch einschlagen, Euch elektrisieren und so in die verstörende Welt des Black-Metal eintauchen lässt. So lässt er Euch pure Wut und Verzweiflung spüren. Es geht aber auch ganz anders. Hin und wieder verfällt der Sänger in eine Erzählstimme, so z.B bei dem Song „

„Glow From The Edge“.

Die Kombination zwischen den harschen Vocals und den teils lieblichen Melodien, die (auch in den martialischen Phasen) von der Gitarre hervorgezaubert werden, übt eine wahnsinnige Faszination aus. Aapo Koivisto am Keybord trägt wie alle anderen erheblich zu dem voluminösen fesselnden Klangbild bei ohne aufdringlich zu wirken. Wenn dann noch im Hintergrund der hübsche sirenenartige seichte Schleier in Form der Stimme von der Sängerin Lindsay Matheson (Schoolcraft/ex-Cradle Of Filth) über dem nächtlichen Firmament schwebt, erzeugt dies eine wunderschöne magische Komponente.

Hypnotisch

windet sich Song um Song, Note um Note, um den Verstand des Hörers. Die epische gnadenlos mächtige Hypnokrake „The Weight“ umschließt Euch mit einer gewaltigen Vehemenz und wird Euch nicht mehr loslassen. Der kolossale Refrain „Can You Feel The Thunder / Can You Feel The End“ will mir einfach nicht mehr aus dem Kopf gehen. Hierbei möchte auf die lyrischen und metaphorischen Texte hinweisen, die ich sehr ansprechend finde und sich wohltuend vom Standard abheben.

Eine bittersüße Epik

verdeutlicht beispielsweise der Song“Advent Of Nihilism“, wo nervöse schnelle Gitarrenläufe Black-Metal-Feeling versprühen. Mit einem gewaltigen Riffdonnerwettter stampft der Song unter kolossallen Drums voran. Mittendrin erklingen traurigschöne Pianoklänge, die zum träumen einladen. Auch das später emporsteigende Gitarrensolo erzeugt einen traumhaften Flair.

Ein herausragender Songaufbau, die allen Songs auf dem Album angedeiht. In den Songs keimen immer wieder Besonderheiten auf, die einzelnen Songs eine besondere Ausstrahlung verleihen. Diese werden unter anderem auch von Gastmusikern zum Besten gegeben. Sei es der schon erwähnte Backgroundgesang von Gastsängerin Lindsay Matheson oder das stimmungsvolle Cellospiel von Timo Virkkala beim Titelsong „Fata Morgana“.

So wird eine beeindruckende Tiefe erzeugt. Keine Komponente wirkt zu aufdringlich, sondern verschmilzt zu einer homogenen bittersüßen Köstlichkeit. Und wie das so ist mit Süßigkeiten? Man wird süchtig danach und bekommt einfach nicht genug. So erging es mir mit diesem Album. Ich liebe eben dunkle Zartbitterschokolade! Und hier gibt es noch eine feine Chilinote mit dabei.

Fazit

MARIANAS REST heben mit ihrem Werk „Fata Morgana“ ein wahres DEATH-DOOM-Highlight aus der schwarzen See. Mal bricht sie tonnenschwer über Euch herein, um Euch in anderen Momenten mit einer federleichten Hülle zu umgarnen. Sie spinnt ihre Fäden geschickt und so faszinierend, dass man schnell in die Welt von MARIANAS REST eingewoben wird. Ein fesselndes Zusammenspiel von betörenden schwerelosen Melodien und brachialen zermalmenden Ausbrüchen. Eine faszinierende Aura umgibt die Songs. Von monumental bis minimalistisch, von brachial bis fragil, von vehement bis melodisch ist einfach alles vertreten. Lasst diese bittersüße Köstlichkeit im auditiven Genuss zergehen und nehmt sie mit all Euren Sinnen auf! Ein Album, dass Zeit und Raum verschwinden lässt.

Für mich zählt das Album in diesem Bereich schon zu den Besten des Jahres 2021.

Melodic DEATH/DOOM-Metal

The north is always a guarantor for fantastic metal bands. We have been presented with some dark treasures from this area lately. Last year, for example, it was KAUNIS KUOLEMATON, DRACONIAN or RED MOON ARCHITECT. MARIANAS REST (Facebook ) are no exception with their current album „Fata Morgana“ and join the line-up of top-class albums.

MARIANAS REST move under the same melancholic cover, just in their own way. And in the following we find out what the sound of MARIANAS REST is all about.

In a dark sea

we float under a surface of melancholy, where only the moonlight cold and white illuminates the scenery with shimmering reflections. Clouds play their black game and rob the night of the last light, so that darkness takes over. Thunder makes the air tremble. The atmosphere crackles with electrifying suspense when

„Fata Morgana“

rises. „Sacrificial“ catches the listener gently melodically, sways him back and forth, only to pull him further down into the dark with a powerful black vortex. Singer Jaakko Mäntymaa’s vocals alternate between dark growls and drastic screams that hit you with the energy of a thunderstorm, electrifying you and thus immersing you in the disturbing world of black metal. So he makes you feel pure rage and despair.But it also works in a completely different way. Every now and then, the singer lapses into a narrative voice, for example in the song „

„Glow From The Edge“.

The combination between the harsh vocals and the partly sweet melodies conjured up by the guitar (even in the martial phases) exerts an insane fascination. Aapo Koivisto on keyboards, like all the others, contributes significantly to the voluminous, captivating sound without being obtrusive. When the pretty siren-like veil in the form of singer Lindsay Matheson’s (Schoolcraft/ex-Cradle Of Filth) voice hovers over the nightly firmament in the background, it creates a wonderful magical component.

Hypnotically,

song after song, note after note, winds around the listener’s mind. The epic, mercilessly powerful `hypnokraken´ „The Weight“ encloses you with a tremendous vehemence and will not let you go. The colossal chorus „Can You Feel The Thunder / Can You Feel The End“ just won’t leave my head. Here I would like to point out the lyrical lyrics, which I find very appealing and pleasantly stand out from the standard.

A bittersweet epic

is illustrated by the song „Advent Of Nihilism“ with its nervouss fast lead guitar playing that exude a black metal feeling. The song stomps forward under colossal drums with an enormous thunderous riff. In the middle of it all, mournful, beautiful piano sounds invite you to dream. The guitar solo that rises later also creates a dreamlike flair.

Again and again, special features germinate in the songs, giving individual songs a special charisma. These are performed by guest musicians, among others. Be it the already mentioned background vocals of guest singer Lindsay Matheson or the atmospheric cello playing of Timo Virkkala on the title song „Fata Morgana“. This creates an impressive depth.

The songs are all very well constructed and interwoven. No component seems too obtrusive, but melts into a homogeneous bittersweet delicacy. And how is it with sweets? You get addicted to it and simply can’t get enough. That’s what happened to me with this album. I love dark chocolate! And there is a fine chilli flavour with it here.

Result

MARIANAS REST lift a true DEATH DOOM highlight out of the dark sea with their work „Fata Morgana“. The music comes across as heavy as a barrel and sometimes light as a feather. It weaves its threads skilfully and so beautifully that you are quickly woven into the world of MARIANAS REST. A captivating interplay of beguiling melodies and brute outbursts. The songs are anything but deceptive, surrounded by a fascinating aura. From monumental to minimalist, from brute to fragile, from vehement to melodic, everything is represented. Let this bittersweet delicacy melt in your auditory pleasure and absorb it with all your senses.

For me, the album is already one of the best of 2021 in this area.
