BLOODYWOOD (Facebook) aus Indien sind echte Shooting Stars und haben sich sehr schnell eine riesige Fanbase erspielt. Wir von metal-heads.de begleiten die Band nun schon eine ganze Weile. Das Debüt “Rakshak” war ein mega Knaller (Review). Da waren wir natürlich Feuer und Flamme, als wir die Möglichkeit bekamen ein Interview mit BLOODYWOOD zu machen.

Der Titeltrack „Nu Delhi“ vom jetzigen Album war wieder sehr spektakulär und das Thema sehr ungewöhnlich, denn es ging um die Liebe zur indischen Küche. Das Video dazu ist so wild und bunt, wie man es schon von anderen Videos der Band kennt. Dasselbe gilt für den Sound. Typisch BLOODYWOOD eben. Ihren einzigartigen unverwechselbaren Mix erkennt man sofort. Die Rap-Parts mit den martialischen Ausbrüchen in Verbindung mit den traditionellen indischen Instrumenten gibt es eben nur bei BLOODYWOOD.

Natürlich ist der Überraschungseffekt musikalisch nicht mehr so gegeben wie beim Debüt, aber man ist trotzdem sehr gespannt mit welchen Ideen sie diesmal auftreten. Und der Sound geht nach wie vor durch Mark und Bein. Kommen wir vom letzten Song zum Opener des Spektakels. „Hall Bol“ fängt sehr mysteriös und bedrohlich mit sakralen Gesängen an, bevor es wild wird. Der Song ist eine Feuersbrunst, die alles niederbrennt. In über fünf Minuten fackeln BLOODYWOOD alles ab, was das Repertoire hergibt und machen unmissverständlich klar, die man sie nicht überhören kann. Es könnte sogar der wildeste Song bisher von BLOODYWOOD sein.

Wer sich die Videos anshieht, wird feststellen, dass die Band eine große Portion Verrücktheit in sich tragen und diese auch gerne offen zur Schau stellen. Musikalisch gibt es auf diesem Album eine ganz verrückte Kombination, die das ganze noch steigert und sehr speziell ist. Niemals wäre mir in den Sinn gekommen, dass BLOODYWOOD und die japanische Band BABYMETAL sich gemeinsam auf zerstörerische Mission begeben. Zugegeben bin ich kein Fan von BABYMETAL, aber bei diesem Song passt es irgendwie zusammen, so dass ein ziemlich ungewöhnlicher irrer Song dabei herausgekommen ist. Das macht schon Spaß!

Also wenn man sich das Album so anhört, muss man schon sagen, dass BLOODYWOOD ihren Sound noch mehr mit irren Ideen und Effekten ausgestattet haben. Der Sound hat trotz der Einbindung der Folkinstrumente eine sehr moderne Ausstrahlung. Es passiert eine Menge im Sound und oft wird man von der Vehemenz erschlagen, mit der BLOODYWOOD unbarmherzig zuschlagen. Aber BLOODYWOOD schaffen es dabei den Überblick zu behalten und schwingen nicht nur die schwere Metal-Keule. Sie lassen auch mal Frieden einkehren und unterhalten mit exotischen Folkpassagen, was die musikalischen Erdbeben noch gewaltiger wirken lässt.

Fazit

BLOODYWOOD legen nach dem verdammt starken Debüt mit „Nu Delhi“ noch mal eine Schüppe drauf und bieten noch mehr verrückte Ideen und irrwitzige Spielfreude. So werden die Songs zu einem unglaublichen und unvergesslichen Erlebnis mit Suchtfaktor. BLOODYWOOD leben ihren Sound und geben immer Vollgas. Es ist wie ein erderschütternder Vulkanausbruch. Faszinierend und maximal eindrucksvoll, aber auch im gleichen Maße zerstörerisch in seiner Auswirkung. Ich wüsste nicht wie man indischen Folk Metal imposanter einschlagen lassen könnte, weshalb ich hier gerne volle 10 Punkte ausschenke.

BLOODYWOOD “Nu Delhi”

BLOODYWOOD (Facebook) from India are real shooting stars and have quickly gained a huge fanbase. We at metal-heads.de have been following the band for quite a while now. Their debut „Rakshak“ was a huge hit (review). So of course we were thrilled when we got the opportunity to do an interview with BLOODYWOOD.

The title track “Nu Delhi” from the current album was again very spectacular and the theme was very unusual, as it was about the love of Indian cuisine. The video for it is as wild and colorful as you would expect from other videos by the band. The same goes for the sound. Typical BLOODYWOOD. Their unmistakable sound is immediately recognizable. The rap parts with the martial outbursts in combination with the traditional Indian instruments are unique to BLOODYWOOD.

Of course, the surprise effect of their sound is not so strong as it was on their debut, but it is still very exciting to see what ideas they come up with this time. And the sound still rattle your bones. Let’s move on from the last song to the opener of the show. „Hall Bol“ begins very mysteriously and menacingly with sacred chants before it gets wild. The song is a conflagration that burns everything down. In over five minutes, BLOODYWOOD torch everything the repertoire has to offer and make it unmistakably clear that they cannot be ignored. It might even be BLOODYWOOD’s wildest song yet.

If you watch the videos, you will realize that the band have a large portion of craziness and are eager to show it. Musically, there is a very crazy combination on this album, which enhances the whole thing and is very special. It would never have occurred to me that BLOODYWOOD and the Japanese band BABYMETAL would embark on a destructive mission together. Admittedly, I’m not a fan of BABYMETAL, but with this song it fits together, resulting in a pretty unusual, crazy song. That’s a lot of fun!

When you listen to the album, you have to say that BLOODYWOOD have added even more crazy ideas and effects to their sound. Despite the inclusion of folk instruments, the sound has a very modern feel. There is a lot going on in the sound and you are often overwhelmed by the vehemence with which BLOODYWOOD strike mercilessly. But BLOODYWOOD manage to keep an overview and don’t just swing the hard way. They also allow some calmer moments and reign and entertain with exotic folk passages, which makes the musical earthquakes even more powerful.

Conclusion

BLOODYWOOD have gone one better with „Nu Delhi“ after their damn strong debut and offer even more crazy ideas in their sound. The songs become an incredible and unforgettable experience with an addictive factor. BLOODYWOOD throw everything into their sound. It’s like an earth-shaking volcanic eruption. Fascinating and maximally impressive, but also equally destructive in its impact. I don’t know how you could make Indian folk metal sound more impressive, which is why I’m happy to give it full 10 points.

Die indische Band BLOODYWOOD (Facebook) haben vor kurzem ihr Debütalbum „Rakshak“ veröffentlicht. Das Album ist echt der Wahnsinn! Schon lange habe ich nicht mehr so einen originellen durchschlagenden Sound erlebt. (Review). Also mir ist echt die Kinnlade runtergefallen, als ich den ersten Song von der Band gehört habe. Die Männer haben einen Senkrechtstart hingelegt. Dazu gehört trotzdem viel Herzblut, Arbeit und ein wenig Glück. ‚metal-heads.de‘ wollte auf jeden Fall mehr über diese Ausnahmeband erfahren und daher freuen wir uns sehr, dass sie unsere Einladung angenommen haben, so dass wir Euch dieses tolle Interview präsentieren können.

BLOODYWOOD vs. BOLLYWOOD

MH: Als ich den Namen BLOODYWOOD las, dachte ich sofort an die indische Filmindustrie BOLLYWOOD. Ich glaube, ihr habt diesen Bandnamen mit Absicht gewählt. Deshalb wäre es interessant zu wissen: Warum habt ihr den Namen BLOODYWOOD gewählt?

BW: Du hast Recht, er ist von „Bollywood“ abgeleitet und einfach ein lustiges Wortspiel. Wir wollten der Welt eine ganz andere Seite von Indien zeigen.

MH: Seid ihr traditionelle Menschen, die die alten Bräuche Indiens und des Hinduismus ehren und leben? Zumindest auf dem Cover habt ihr den imposanten Elefanten als Motiv gewählt, der in eurer Kultur sehr verehrt wird.

BW: Das ist eine nette, aber wirklich lustige Frage, denn die Antwort lautet: Nein! Eigentlich überhaupt nicht. Wir sind Teil des modernen Indiens und keiner von uns ist religiös.

Der Elefant ist hier ein großes kulturelles Symbol und abgesehen davon haben wir ihn gewählt, weil er ein Tier repräsentiert, das sowohl sanft als auch wild ist.

Mut wird belohnt

MH: Das Album ist erst seit kurzem auf dem Markt. Wie ist es aufgenommen worden? Wurden eure Erwartungen erfüllt?

BW: Es ist erstaunlich, denn das Wichtigste für uns bei diesem Album war es, Risiken einzugehen und unseren Sound weiterzuentwickeln, während wir dem Fundament, das wir aufgebaut haben, treu bleiben. Das ist genau das, was wir von unseren Fans hören, nämlich dass es nach uns klingt, aber auf einem höheren Niveau ist. Dank ihnen hat es das Album auch in einige Charts geschafft, darunter Platz 4 in den weltweiten iTunes-Charts! Wir haben auch einige hervorragende Kritiken bekommen. Und das ist immer schön.

Einmalige Live-Band

MH: „Rakshak“ ist euer Debütalbum! Und was für ein Debüt! Jeder kann in der Tat sagen, dass es ein ganz eigener Sound ist. Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass viele Leute anfangs sehr skeptisch sind, wenn ihnen jemand etwas von indischem Folk Metal erzählt. Aber wenn sie euch dann hören, sind die meisten von ihnen sehr positiv überrascht. Zumindest habe ich diese Erfahrung mit meinen Freunden gemacht. Besonders bei Live-Konzerten stelle ich mir vor, dass ihr die Bühne abfackelt und die Leute völlig durchdrehen. Wie sind eure Erfahrungen? Wo seid ihr bisher live aufgetreten?

BW: Stellt euch alles vor, was ihr in unseren Musikvideos hört, seht und fühlt, multipliziert mit Faktor ‚Tausend‘! Unsere Fans waren jedes Mal, wenn wir live aufgetreten sind, fantastisch. Auch wenn wir ohnehin auf der Bühne alles geben, heben sie es auf ein ganz neues Niveau.
Bis jetzt haben wir in Deutschland, Großbritannien, Frankreich und Russland gespielt. Im August dieses Jahres werden wir wieder in Europa auf Tour sein!

Wirbelstürme und das WACKEN OPEN AIR

MH: Was ist das Verrückteste oder Tollste, was ihr mit eurer Band erlebt habt?

BW: Das Verrückteste war, als wir nach unserem letzten Tourtag 2019 in Russland vor der Naturgewalt eines Wirbelsturms fliehen mussten. Stellt euch das mal vor! Unser letzter freier Tag, um eine Pause zu machen, und wir mussten um unser Leben rennen. Das war mehr lustig als traumatisierend.

Das Tollste war, am Nachmittag auf dem Wacken Open Air, vor einem vollen Zelt mit 15000 Leuten zu spielen. Als wir von Wacken eingeladen wurden, hatten wir nur drei eigene Songs und hatten noch nie als Band zusammen live gespielt. Wir mussten von 0 auf 100 gehen und genau das haben wir dank intensiver Proben über zwei Monate geschafft. Das war der Moment, in dem wir bewiesen, dass wir auf die größten Bühnen der Welt gehörten.

Der Geist von RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE

MH: Wie habt ihr euren Sound entwickelt? Wie habt ihr als Band angefangen? Wer hatte die Idee für diese Band und die Integration von indischer Folklore? Und wie seid ihr auf die Idee mit den zwei Sängern gekommen? Seid ihr Fans von RAGE AGAINS THE MACHINE zum Beispiel? (Ich erinnere mich an die Killer-Tracks „Bombtrack“ oder „Killing In The Name Of“.)

BW: Die Band begann mit Karan und Jayant, die an Metal-Covern von Popmusik arbeiteten, um sich ein Publikum aufzubauen und unseren Sound zu erkunden. Als wir planten, indische Popmusik zu covern, entdeckte Karan die Möglichkeit einer kraftvollen Fusion zwischen traditionellen Metal-Instrumenten und der indischen „Dhol“-Trommel. Die Covers kamen gut an, und die Leute waren vor allem von dem einzigartigen Sound begeistert, der durch die Fusion entstand. Raoul brachte die Hip-Hop-/Englisch-Dimension ein und gemeinsam schufen wir die virale Sensation „Ari Ari“. Die Entscheidung, mit zwei Sängern und Sprachen zu arbeiten, war eine natürliche Entscheidung, die sich richtig anfühlte.

Wir alle mögen RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE und besonders Raoul ist ein großer Fan. Sie haben gezeigt, wie mächtig die Verbindung zwischen Musik und Politik ist und wie sie die Welt verändern kann, sie sind eine unserer Inspirationen.

Alleintellungsmerkmal

MH: Was mich überrascht hat, ist die Tatsache, dass du zum Beispiel allein auf Facebook über 200.000 Follower hast. Vor einigen Wochen habe ich ziemlich viele Vorbestellungen auf Bandcamp gesehen. Eure Videos haben unglaublich viele Aufrufe („Gaadar“, zum Beispiel, über eine Million!!!) Das ist sehr ungewöhnlich für eine Band, die gerade ihr Debütalbum veröffentlicht hat. Was ist der Grund dafür? Woher kommt eure große Popularität?

BW: Wir denken, dass es zwei Hauptgründe gibt: unser einzigartiger Sound und unsere Musikvideos sowie die Botschaften, die unsere Songs transportieren. Dank des Internets haben wir das Glück, mit Menschen aus der ganzen Welt in Kontakt zu kommen, die unsere Liebe zur Musik und unseren Glauben, dass wir gemeinsam eine bessere Welt schaffen können, teilen.

Wir stehen für etwas Neues, etwas, das ebenso wild wie herzergreifend ist, und das hat es uns ermöglicht, allein durch Singles und Musikvideos eine große Anhängerschaft zu gewinnen, weil wir uns mit den Menschen auf einer zutiefst persönlichen Ebene und auch auf einer kollektiven bzw. gesellschaftlichen Ebene verbunden haben. Wir verdanken unseren Erfolg ihrer großartigen Unterstützung und wir tun alles, was in unserer Macht steht, um dieser Unterstützung würdig zu sein!
Ein besonderes Lob geht an unsere Gönner, denn ihre Unterstützung ist das Rückgrat der Band.

Entstehung des Albums

MH: Wie habt ihr euch die Entstehung des Albums vorgestellt? Habt ihr im Vorfeld eine Single nach der anderen veröffentlicht, um dann irgendwann ein komplettes Album daraus zu machen?

BW: Wir wollten alle unsere bisher veröffentlichten Originale einbeziehen, weil sie das Fundament sind, auf dem der Rest des Albums aufgebaut wurde. Zu den neuen Songs haben wir im Vorfeld des Albums zwei Musikvideos veröffentlicht, bevor wir das dritte mit der Veröffentlichung des Albums selbst herausgebracht haben. Wir taten dies, weil wir lange Zeit online ruhig waren, während wir an dem Album arbeiteten, und wir wollten einige richtige Kracher kommen lassen, um unser Comeback anzukündigen. Das Album enthält drei weitere brandneue Songs, zu denen es noch keine Musikvideos gibt.

Konzertpläne

MH: Ich nehme an, dass ihr jetzt viele Konzerte in der ganzen Welt spielen werdet. Gibt es Länder, in denen ihr noch nicht gewesen seid und wo ihr unbedingt hinwollt?

BW: Wir können es kaum erwarten, in den USA zu spielen. Wir haben dort eine Menge Fans, die uns über die Jahre so viel Liebe entgegengebracht haben, also können wir es kaum erwarten, für sie zu spielen! Ein anderes Land, in dem wir es kaum erwarten können, ist Brasilien. Wir bekommen so viele „Komm nach Brasilien“-Kommentare, dass es fast so ist, als müssten wir hin. Wir haben sogar geplant, „BLOODYWOOD came to Brazil“ auf die Rückseite unseres Tour-Merchandise zu drucken.

Politische Band ?

MH: Seid Ihr eine politische Band? Es scheint also, dass ihr mit eurer Musik etwas erreichen und klare Botschaften vermitteln wollt. Was ist euch besonders wichtig? Wo seht ihr die dringendsten Probleme, die gelöst werden müssen?

BW: Wir würden nicht sagen, dass wir eine politische Band sind, aber politische Musik zu machen ist ein großer Teil dessen, was wir tun. Es gibt nichts, was uns besonders wichtig ist, weil alles unter das gleiche Ziel fällt: ein besseres Miteinander.

In unserem Album „Rakshak“ haben wir uns jedoch entschieden, uns auf sexuelle Übergriffe, die Beseitigung von Armut, religiöse Politik und Korruption im Journalismus zu konzentrieren, um nur einige zu nennen.

Wir glauben, dass Musik aufgrund ihrer Fähigkeit, Emotionen zu vermitteln, einen anderen Anstoß geben kann. Jeder ist sich dieser Herausforderungen bewusst, wir müssen nur den Wunsch verspüren, etwas dagegen zu tun. Wenn es uns gelingt, genügend Gleichgesinnte zusammenzubringen und alle zu motivieren, sich in die richtige Richtung zu bewegen, gibt es keine Herausforderung, die wir nicht bewältigen können.

Wir sind die Firma

MH: Eure Videos haben zwar noch nicht die opulenten Dimensionen eines BOLLYWOOD-Blockbusters, aber sie sind mit viel Aufwand realisiert worden. Mit Ausnahme von „Dana Dan“ wurden alle Videos draußen gedreht. „Gaadar“ spielt in einer Stadt und die anderen beiden zeigen beeindruckende Orte in der Natur. Wer hat die Ideen für diese Umsetzungen? Macht ihr das alleine oder in Zusammenarbeit mit einer Firma?

BW: Wir drei (Karan, Jayant und Raoul) sind diejenigen, die die Videos konzipieren. Wir machen den Song und entscheiden dann, welche Drehorte und Aufnahmen am besten geeignet sind, um seine Energie zu vermitteln. Indien ist auch geografisch sehr vielfältig, so dass wir viele Möglichkeiten haben, sowohl in der Natur als auch in den Städten selbst zu drehen. Als unabhängige Band mussten wir uns sehr auf unsere Umgebung verlassen, aber jetzt, wo wir gewachsen sind, können wir verschiedene Möglichkeiten des Drehs in Betracht ziehen, wie man bei „Dana-dan“ gesehen hat.
Die Dreharbeiten, der Schnitt und die Farbkorrektur werden ebenfalls im Haus durchgeführt. Es gibt keine Firma, wir sind die Firma!

The Indian band BLOODYWOOD (Facebook) have recently released their amazing debut album „Rakshak“. It’s been a long time since I’ve experienced such an original resounding sound. (Review). Well, I am totally freaked out when I heard a song from the band for the first time. The men have made a flying start. But not to forget this takes a lot of passion, work and a little luck. ‚metal-heads.de‘ definitely wanted to know more about this exceptional band and therefore we are very happy that they accepted our invitation so that we can present you this great interview.

BLOODYWOOD vs. BOLLYWOOD

MH: When I read the name BLOODYWOOD, I immediately thought of BOLLYWOOD.  I think you chose this band name on purpose. Therefore it would be interesting to know: Why did you choose the name BLOODYWOOD?

BW: You’re right, it’s derived from Bollywood and just a bit of fun word-play. We wanted to show the world a completely different side of India.

MH: Are you traditional people who honor and live the old customs of India and Hinduism? At least on the cover you have chosen the imposing elephant as a motif, which is very revered in your culture.

BW: That’s a sweet but really funny question because the answer is no, not at all really. We’re part of the modern India and none of us are religious. The elephant is a big cultural symbol here and apart from that we chose it because it represents an animal that is both gentle and fierce.

Courage is rewarded

MH: The album has been bublished for a short time now. How has it been received? Were your expectations met? 

BW: It’s been amazing because the most important thing for us with this album was to take risks and evolve our sound while staying true to the foundation we’ve built. That’s exactly what we’re hearing back from our supporters, that it sounds like us but it’s the next level. Thanks to them the album made it to a few charts as well, including #4 on the global iTunes charts! We’ve also had quite a few excellent reviews and that’s always nice.

Unique live band

MH: „Rakshak“ is your debut album! And what a debut! Everybode can indeed say that it is a very special sound of its own. I can imagine that many people are very skeptical at first when someone tells them something about Indian folk Metal. But when they hear you then, most of them are very positively surprised. At least I made this experience with my friends. Especially at live concerts I imagine that you burn down the stage and the people go completely crazy. How are your experiences? Where have you performed live so far? 

BW: Imagine everything you hear, see and feel during our music videos multiplied by one thousand! Our supporters have been amazing everytime we performed live and even though we give everything we have when we’re on the stage, they take it to a whole new level.
So far we’ve played in Germany, the UK, France and Russia. We’ll be back on tour in Europe in August this year!

Hurricanes & WACKEN OPEN AIR

MH: What is the craziest or greatest thing you have ever experienced with your band?

BW: The craziest was escaping a hurricane in Russia together after our last day on tour in 2019. Imagine that! Our last day off to take a break and we had to run for our lives, it was more hilarious than traumatizing.

The greatest thing was playing at the Wacken Open Air to a packed tent of 15000 people in the afternoon. When we were invited by Wacken we only had three original songs and had never played live together as a band. We had to go from 0 to 100! And we managed to do exactly that thanks to intense practice for two months. It was the moment that we proved we belonged on the biggest stages the world had to offer.

The spirit of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE

MH: How did you develop your sound? How did you began as a band? Who had the idea for this band and the integration of Indian folklore? And how you came about the idea of two singers? Are you fans of RAGE AGAINS THE MACHINE for example? (I rember the killer tracks „Bombtrack“ or „Killing In The Name Of“.)

BW: The band started with Karan and Jayant working on metal covers of pop music to build an audience and explore our sound. When we planned to do covers of Indian pop, Karan discovered the possibility of a powerful fusion between traditional metal instruments and the Indian „Dhol“ drum. The covers were well received and people were especially enthusiastic about the unique sound that the fusion created. Raoul introduced the hip-hop/English dimension and together we created the viral sensation „Ari Ari“. As a result, the decision to go with two vocalists and languages was a natural one that felt right, it’s not something we thought and planned a lot.

All of us enjoy RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE and Raoul is especially a big supporter. They showed the power of the link between music and politics and it’s ability to change the world, they are one of our inspirations.

Extraordinary

MH: What surprised me is the fact that you have over 200,000 followers on Facebook alone, for example. Some weeks ago I’ve seen quite many pre-orders on Bandcamp. Your videos have incredibly many views („Gaadar“, for example, over a million!!!) This is very unusual for a band that has just released their debut album. What is the reason for that? Where does your great popularity come from? 

BW: We think it’s for two main reasons: our unique sound and music videos as well as  the messages that our songs carry. Thanks to the internet we’ve been fortunate enough to connect with people from around the world  who share our love for the music as well as our belief that we can create a better world together.

We stand for something new, something that’s as ferocious as it is heart felt and that has allowed us to gain a strong following thanks to singles and music videos alone because we’ve connected with people on a deeply personal level and on a collective/societal one too. We owe our success to their amazing support and we do everything in our power to be worthy of it!

Creation of the album

MH: How do you imagine the creation of the album? Did you release single after single in the run-up, in order to make a complete album out of it at some point?

BW: We wanted to include all our originals that had been released so far because they are the foundation on which the rest of the album was built. With the new songs, we released two music videos in the build up to the album, before dropping the third with the release of the album itself. We did this because we had been quiet online for a long time as we worked on the album, we wanted to drop some real bombs to announce our comeback. The album has three other brand new songs which don’t have music videos yet.

Plans for concerts

MH: I assume that you will now play many concerts all over the world. Are there countries where you haven’t been yet and where you definitely want to go?

BW: We can’t wait to play in the US. We have a lot of supporters there who have shown us so much love over the years so we can’t wait to play for them! Another country we can’t wait to be in is Brazil, we get so many „come to Brazil“ comments that it’s almost like we have to go. We have even planned to print „BLOODYWOOD came to Brazil“ on the back of our tour merch there.

Political band?

MH: Are you a political band? It seems that you want to achieve something with your music and convey clear messages. What is especially important to you? Where do you see the most urgent problems that need to be solved?

BW: We wouldn’t say we’re a political band but making political music is a big part of what we do. There is nothing that is especially important to us because it all falls under the same goal: better together. However in our album „Rakshak“, we have chosen to focus on sexual assault, eradication of poverty, religious politics and corruption in journalism to name a few.

We believe that music can provide a different kind of push because of its ability to convey emotion. Everyone is aware of these challenges, we just need them to feel the desire to do something about them. If we can bring enough people who feel the same way together and motivate everyone to make a push in the right direction, there’s no challenge we will be unable to overcome. 

We are the company

MH: Your videos don’t have the opulent dimensions of a BOLLYWOOD blockbuster yet, but they have been realized with a lot of effort. Except for „Dana Dan“, all videos were shot outside. „Gaadar“ takes place in a city and the other two show impressive places in nature. Who has the ideas for these realizations? Do you do it on your own or in cooperation with a company? 

BW: The three of us (Karan, Jayant and Raoul) are the ones who conceptualize the videos. We make the song and then decide which locations and shots will be the best to convey its energy. India is a diverse place in terms of its geography as well so we have lots of options to explore, both across the outdoors and in the cities themselves. As an independent band we did have to rely on our surroundings a lot, but now that we’ve grown we can look at different ways of shooting as you saw in „Dana-dan“.
The shooting, editing and colour grading is also done in house. There’s no company, we are the company!

Indian Folk Metal

BLOODYWOOD (Facebook) weckt natürlich sofort Assoziationen und manch einer wird beim ersten schnellen Lesen auch „Bollywood“ gelesen haben. Nun muss man sagen, dass beide Begriffe einem Land zuzuordnen sind, nämlich Indien. Das war es aber auch schon so ziemlich mit den Gemeinsamkeiten,na ja, zumindest fast. Die Bollywood Filme sind sehr pompös und farbenfroh produziert. Ein Hauptaugenmerk sind die aufwendigen Tanszenen, die meist zur indischen Folkloremusik dargeboten werden. BLOODYWOOD dagegen hauen Euch dagegen brettharten modernen Metal um die Ohren, aber man höre und staune: Sie verbinden ihren Sound mit der indischen Folklore.

Ein mächtiger Elefant

ziert das Cover des Albums. Der Elefant wird in Indien als heiliges Tier verehrt. Einer der wichtigsten Hindu-Götter namens ‚Ganesha‘ trägt einen Elefantenkopf. Zum Albumtitel kann uns die Band selbst etwas sagen:

„Rakshak“ bedeutet „Beschützer“ oder „Wächter“ auf Hindi. Die Botschaft unserer Musik war uns schon immer genauso wichtig wie die Musik selbst. Und unser Ziel war und ist es, einen positiven Einfluss auf das Leben der Menschen und den Planeten zu haben.

Nun mögen einige die Stirn runzeln und sich denken: Ja, die traditionelle indische Küche ist voll mein Fall! Aber indische Folklore mit Metal??? Wie soll das klingen?

Ich kann Euch eines versprechen!

Der Sound knallt ohne Ende

Nach dem Start dauert es nur einige Sekunden, bis die Bombe platzt und Schockwellen von fettem rifflastigen Groove sich massiv ausbreiten. Verdammt noch mal! Was für ein bombastischer umwerfender Sound. Hat stellenweise etwas von SLIPKNOT, geht aber viel weiter. Diese typischen indischen Klänge einer Tumbi (einsaitiges Zupfinstrument) rocken so was von und fügen sich geradezu perfekt in den Groovecore-Sound ein. Aber damit ist mit den Besonderheiten noch nicht getan. Zwei Sänger schmettern hier die Texte aus einem indischen und englischen Mix. Da wäre zum einen Jayant Bhadula, der mit seinem engergiegeladenen Shouting alles in Grund und Boden schreit. Und sein Mitstreiter Raoul Kerr rapt seine Parts nicht minder eindrucksvoll mit voller Wucht in die Fresse. Die Mucke haut mich völlig aus den Latschen. Das Rap und Metal funktionieren können, wissen wir nicht erst seit RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE oder CLAWFINGER, die in den 90′ er Jahren sehr erfolgreich damit unterwegs waren. Nun haben wir 2022 und es funktioniert immer noch. Hört selbst!

Ein wenig entspannter

gehen es BLOODYWOOD beim Song „Zanjeero Se“ an. Hier lässt man die Brutalokeule im Sack. Kaum zu glauben, aber dafür packen sie hier ihr melodisches Können aus. In dem ruhigeren atmosphärischen Song mit weiblichem Chorgesang im Hintergrund singt Sänger sehr gefühlvoll voller Harmonien. Der mehrstimmige Refrain hat epische Züge und sogar der Rap-Part passt hierhin und baut zwischendurch zusammen mit der intensiveren Instrumentierung eine druckvolle Passage auf.

In eine ähnliche Kategorie würde ich auch die Songs „Yaad“ „Jee Veerey“ und einordnen. Allerdings muss man sagen, dass diese Songs zwar auch ihre behutsamen Phasen haben, die sich aber mit den energiegeladenen brachialen Ausbrüchen die Klinke in die Hand geben.

Die Flöte rockt

So lassen BLOODYWOOD auch gerne die indische Flöte einfließen, welche immer wieder mal zu hören ist. So auch bei dem Song „Aaj“. Hätte nie gedacht, dass die Flöte sich dermaßen gut zu einem so monströsen Sound macht, der zwischendurch dermaßen heftig prügelt und abgeht, dass man nur völlig ausflippen kann. „Aaj“ ist ein Brecher von Song, der alle Elemente perfekt verbindet. Total irrsinnig!

Dazu passt auch folgendes Statement der Band:

Musikalisch sind wir mehr als nur ein paar Risiken eingegangen und haben die Grenzen unseres Sounds sowohl gesanglich als auch instrumental erweitert. Neben einigen Songs mit unserem unverkennbaren Sound haben wir auch viel experimentiert, indem wir unsere bisher schnellste, härteste und wütendste Musik geschrieben haben, während wir auch Elemente und Instrumente aus Genres einbezogen haben, die am anderen Ende des musikalischen Spektrums liegen.

Totale Eskalation

ist einer der explosiven Zutaten von BLOODYWOOD, vor denen man sich in acht nehmen muss. Da geht es schonungslos zur Sache und diese Energie überfährt einen wie eine Horde wütender Elefanten. Der Song „Dana-Dan“ ist dermaßen crazy, dass man nur staunen kann wieviele Elementen BLOODYWOOD hier in ihren Songs verarbeiten. Hier spielen nicht nur verrückte Töne indischer Folklore eine Rolle, sondern auch Synthies oder sogar tragender mystischer weiblicher Gesang. Zudem sind die Raps von Raoul Kerr sind immer wieder ein Vergnügen und alles andere als eintönig. Denn auch diese bedienen verschiedene Stimmungen.

Vor dem Fazit gibt es noch den Song „Machi Bhasad“, der einen völlig durchrüttelt. Besonders gut gefallen hat mir hier auch der coolen Part mit den Dhol (indische Trommeln) ab Minute 02:30 mit anschließender kurzer Erholungsphase.

Fazit

BLOODYWOOD sind für mich eine wahre Überraschung. Mir waren sie völlig unbekannt und hätte mir jemand etwas von indischem Folk-Metal erzählt, dann wäre ich mehr als skeptisch gewesen.

Aber ich liebe positive Überraschungen! BLOODYWOOD haben mich umgehauen! Nie im Leben hätte ich mir so einen geilen Sound vorstellen können. Einen Sound, den ich tatsächlich noch nie so gehört habe. So komme ich zu dem Ergebnis: Der indische Folk rockt! Abgesehen davon sind die zwei Sänger absolut spitzenmäßig und bieten eine Flut von Eindrücken.

Bei BLOODYWOOD gibt es eine breite Range: Von harmonischem Gefühl und epischen Momenten bis hemmungslose Wut und unbändige Kraft ist alles dabei. Es gibt viele richtiger Burner auf dem Album, die einfach genial sind. Aber nicht alle Songs haben mich vollkommen überzeugt und sind so ausgefeilt wie andere, aber einen Durchhänger habe ich auch nicht gefunden.

Alles in allem fackeln BLOODYWOOD mit ihrem Album „Rakshar“ eine Wahnsinnsshow ab. Man wird von der explosiven machtvollen Energie besessen und mitgerissen.

English review

Indian Folk Metal

BLOODYWOOD (Facebook) of course immediately arouses associations and some will have read „Bollywood“ at the first quick read. Now it has to be said that both terms can be assigned to one country, namely India. The Bollywood movies are produced very pompous and colorful. One of the main features are the elaborate dance scenes, which are usually performed to Indian folk music. BLOODYWOOD, on the other hand, bludgeon you with hard modern Metal, but listen and be amazed: they combine their sound with Indian folklore.

A mighty elephant

adorns the cover of the album. The elephant is revered as a sacred animal in India. One of the most important Hindu gods named ‚Ganesha‘ carries an elephant head. About the album title, the band itself can tell us something:

Rakshak means ‚protector‘ or ‚guardian‘ in Hindi. We’ve always been as passionate about the message of our music as much as the music itself, and our goal has and always will be to make a positive impact in people’s lives and on the planet.

Now many may frown and think to themselves: Yes, traditional Indian cuisine is totally my cup of tea! But Indian folklore with metal??? How should that sound?

I can promise you one thing!

The sound bangs hard

After the start it takes only a few seconds until the bomb bursts and shockwaves of fat riff-heavy groove spread massively. Bloody hell! What a bombastic mind blowing sound. Has something of SLIPKNOT in places, but goes much further. Those typical Indian sounds of a tumbi (one-stringed plucked instrument) rock so hard and fit just perfectly into the groovecore sound. But that’s not the end of the special features. Two singers belt out the lyrics from an Indian and English mix. On the one hand there is Jayant Bhadula, who screams everything into the ground with his engergic shouting and offers also some melodic soulful features. And his comrade-in-arms Raoul Kerr raps his parts no less impressively with full force. The music blows my mind completely. That rap and metal can work, we know not only since RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE or CLAWFINGER, who were very successful with it in the 90’s on the road. Now it’s 2022 and it still works. Listen for yourself!

A little more relaxed

BLOODYWOOD go it with the song „Zanjeero Se“. Here they leave the bloody axe in the bag. Hard to believe, but here they unpack their melodic skills. In the quieter atmospheric song with female choir vocals in the background singer Jayant Bhadula sings very soulful full of harmonies. The polyphonic chorus has epic strains and even the rap part fits here and builds up a punchy passage in between together with the more intense instrumentation.

In a similar category I would also put the songs „Yaad“ and „Jee Veerey“. However, it must be said that although these songs alternate between cautious and energetic brute phases.

The flute rocks

BLOODYWOOD also like to use the Indian flute, which can be heard from time to time. So also with the song „Aaj“. Never would have thought that the flute is so good to such a monstrous sound, which in between punches with violent beats and goes off like hell. You can completely freak out by hearing this. „Aaj“ is a breaker of a song that combines all elements perfectly. Totally insane!

The following statement from the band matches this:

Musically we’ve taken more than a few risks and pushed the limits of our sound both vocally and instrumentally. Besides having a few songs with our signature sound, we have also experimented heavily by writing our fastest, heaviest and angriest music yet while also incorporating elements and instruments from genres that lie on the other end of the musical spectrum.

Total escalation

is one of the explosive ingredients of BLOODYWOOD you have to be careful of. It goes relentlessly to the point and this energy overtakes you like a horde of angry elephants. The song „Dana-Dan“ is so crazy that you can only be amazed how many elements BLOODYWOOD process here in their songs. Not only crazy sounds of Indian folklore play a role here, but also synths or even carrying mystical female vocals. In addition, the raps of Raoul Kerr are always a pleasure and anything but monotonous. Because these also serve different vibes.

Before my conclusion comes I want to show you the song „Machi Bhasad“, that shakes you up completely. I especially liked the cool part with the Dhol (Indian drums) from minute 02:30 with a short recovery phase afterwards.

Conclusion

BLOODYWOOD are a real surprise for me. They were completely unknown to me and if someone had told me something about Indian folk metal, I would have been more than skeptical.

But I love positive surprises! BLOODYWOOD blew me away! Never I would have expected such an awesome sound. A sound that I have actually never heard like this before. So I come to the conclusion: Indian folk rocks! Apart from that, the two singers are absolutely top-notch and offer a flood of impressions.

With BLOODYWOOD there is a wide range: from harmonic feeling and epic moments to unrestrained rage and unbridled power. There are many real burners on the album that are simply brilliant. But not all songs have convinced me completely and are as perfectly arranged as the absolute highlights, but I have not found a bad song either.

All in all BLOODYWOOD burn a mad fireckracker with their album „Rakshar“. You get possessed and carried away by the explosive powerful energy.
