„Ragnarok“ – ein weiteres Stück von der aktuellen EP

Heute veröffentlicht Kjell Braaten einen weiteren Song der EP „Ragnarok“. Im letzten Monat kam dazu mit „Jotun“, der erste Song heraus. Jetzt also der Titelsong, über die Apokalypse in der nordischen Mythologie.

Wie „Jotun“ ist auch „Ragnarok“ kein Stück, das für diese EP komponiert wurde. Es war eine Auftragsarbeit. Daher klingt auch dieses Stück anders, als die Musik, die auf Kjell Braatens Alben „Ferd“ (2020), „Bronseplassen“ (2021) oder „Blóta“ (2022) zu hören ist.

Mit „Raganrok“ zeigt Kjell Braaten erneut, wie viele verschiedene Facetten sein musikalisches Spektrum umfasst. Er hat für Theater, Film (wie z.B. für die Serie „Vikings Valhalla“) geschrieben, Sounddesigns entwickelt und war an verschiedenen Bands beteiligt (z.B. EHWAZ, WARDRUNA). Außerdem hat mit vielen verschiedenen Künstlern und Projekten zusammengearbeitet u.a. FOLKET BORTAFOR NORDAVINDEN, Anette Aga, dem Nordic Animism-Projekt. Im letzten Jahr stand er mit NEBALA auf der Bühne (die Aufnahmen von dieser großartigen Show könnt ihr hier sehen und dort mehr darüber erfahren).

Im Song „Jotun“ haben sich diese mit den Naturgewalten und dem Chaos verbundenen Wesen auf den Weg gemacht, um am Kampf von Ragnarök teilzunehmen.  

 „Ragnarok“

„Ragnarok“ beginnt mit dem rauen bedrohlich klingenden Aufruf: „Ragnarok“. Trommelschläge und unwirklich klingende Töne: irgendwo zwischen Mensch und Tier. Die schneller werdenden Trommeln, die knurrenden Vocals bauen Spannung auf. Sie klingen wie die Vorbereitung auf eine beängstigende Begegnung.

Aber vielleicht höre ich das auch nur deshalb so, weil ich die Bilder, mit denen Ragnarök in den Gedichten der Edda beschrieben wird, kenne. Daher klingt die Musik für mich sowohl nach Voranschreiten, als auch nach Unabänderlichkeit, nach Angst ebenso wie nach Entschlusskraft, sich dem Kommenden zu stellen.

Der Moment, in dem das Gjallarhorn / die Lure zu hören ist, verursacht Gänsehaut. Das Gjallarhorn ruft die Götter zum Kampf. Die Stimme, die man dann hört, klingt nach Schmerz, Trauer und Bedauern zugleich. Und dann der Kampf: tiefe und gutturale Laute, Metall, das aufeinandertrifft. Die Dynamik nimmt immer mehr zu: die Stimmen und die Trommeln werden intensiver.
Mittendrinn ist wieder das hier bedrohlich klingende Horn zu hören, das den Untergang der Welt als unausweichlichen Lauf des Schicksals symbolisiert– und dann ist alles zu Ende.

Ragnarök in der nordischen Mythologie

Ragnarök, das Verhängnis, das Schicksal der herrschenden Mächte, spielt nicht nur in verschiedenen Dichtungen eine Rolle.
Es gibt – nicht nur im Metal – unzählige Songs dazu (wie z.B. „Twilight Of The Thunder God“ von AMON AMARTH, TÝR haben dem Thema mit „Ragnarok“ ein ganzes Album gewidmet).

Das wohl wichtigste Gedicht, das die Ragnarök-Ereignisse prophezeit, ist die Völuspá, die Prophezeiung der Seherin. Dieses Gedicht, das eines der bedeutendsten der nordischen Mythologie ist, findet sich sowohl in der Poetischen Edda als auch in der Edda des Sorri Sturluson.

Während Snorri Sturluson in seiner epischen Erzählung ausführlich den finalen und heroischen Kampf der Götter mit den Kräften des Bösen beschreibt, ist die Darstellung in der poetischen Edda symbolischer, metaphorischer. Götter und verschiedene mythologische Geschöpfe kämpfen gegeneinander. Die Natur gerät außer Kontrolle, die Sonne verdunkelt sich und die Sterne fallen vom Himmel. Schließlich werden die Götter besiegt und die Welt geht in Flammen auf, die meisten Götter kommen ums Leben. Die Völuspá beschreibt, dass nach dem Untergang eine neue Welt entsteht, die von den überlebenden Göttern und Menschen bewohnt wird.

Der Kreislauf von Schöpfung und Vernichtung

Niemand kann heute sagen, woher diese Vorstellungen gekommen sind und welche Bedeutung die Beschreibungen für die hatten, die sie geschaffen oder weitergegeben haben.

Aber dieser Kreislauf von Schöpfung und Vernichtung, von Vergänglichkeit und dem unvermeidbaren Untergang, damit Neues entstehen kann, ist ein Thema, das auch aktuell eine Rolle spielt.

So können wir in einen Dialog mit diesen Gedichten treten und sie in eine Beziehung zu uns bringen.

Hier schließt sich auch der Kreis in Kjell Braatens Musik, von „Ragnarok“ zu seinen anderen Alben: das, was war, in einen Bezug zur Gegenwart zu bringen.

Und dafür ist „Ragnarok“ in der Verbindung alter Instrumente und aktueller Technik ein gutes Beispiel.

„Ragnarok“ – another track from the current EP

Today Kjell Braaten releases another song from the EP „Ragnarok“. The first song, „Jotun“, was released last month. Now the title song, which is about the apocalypse in Norse mythology.

Like „Jotun“, „Ragnarok“ is not a piece that was composed for this EP. It was a commissioned piece. Therefore, this piece also sounds different from the music that can be heard on Kjell Braaten’s albums „Ferd“ (2020), „Bronseplassen“ (2021) or „Blóta“ (2022).

With „Ragnarok“, Kjell Braaten once again shows how many different facets his musical spectrum encompasses. He has written for theatre, and film (such as for the series „Vikings Valhalla“), developed sound designs and been involved in various bands (e.g. EHWAZ, WARDRUNA). He has also worked with many different artists and projects including FOLKET BORTAFOR NORDAVINDEN, Anette Aga, and the Nordic Animism project. In the song „Jotun“, these beings associated with the forces of nature and chaos have set out to take part in the battle of Ragnarök. 

„Ragnarok“

„Ragnarok“ begins with the harsh ominous-sounding call: „Ragnarok“. Drum beats and unreal-sounding tones: somewhere between human and animal. The accelerating drums and the growling vocals build tension. They sound like preparation for a frightening encounter.
But maybe I only hear it that way because I know the images with which Ragnarök is described in the poems of the Edda. That’s why the music sounds to me both of progress and irreversibility, of fear as well as of determination to face what is coming.

This moment when the Gjallarhorn / lure is heard gives me goosebumps. The Gjallarhorn calls the gods to battle. The voice that is then heard sounds like pain, sadness and regret at the same time.

And then the battle: deep and guttural sounds, metal clashing. The dynamics increase more and more: the voices and the drums become more intense. In the middle, the ominous-sounding horn can be heard again, symbolising the world’s downfall as the inevitable course of fate – and then everything ends.

Ragnarok in Norse mythology

Ragnarök, the doom, the fate of the ruling powers, plays a role not only in various poetries.

There are – not only in metal – countless songs about it (such as „Twilight Of The Thunder God“ by AMON AMARTH, TÝR have dedicated an entire album to the theme with „Ragnarok“).

Probably the most important poem prophesying the Ragnarok events is the Völuspá, the prophecy of the seer. This poem, which is one of the most important in Norse mythology, is found in both the Poetic Edda and the Edda of Snorri Sturluson.

While Snorri Sturluson describes in detail the final and heroic struggle of the gods with the forces of evil in his epic narrative, the depiction in the Poetic Edda is more symbolic and metaphorical. Gods and various mythological creatures fight each other. Nature gets out of control, the sun darkens and the stars fall from the sky. Eventually, the gods are defeated and the world goes up in flames, most of the gods perish. The Völuspá describes that after the downfall a new world emerges, inhabited by the surviving gods and humans.

The cycle of creation and destruction

No one can say today where these ideas came from and what meaning the descriptions had for those who created or passed them on.

But this cycle of creation and destruction, of transience and the inevitable demise so that something new can arise, is a theme that also plays a role today.

So we can enter into a dialogue with these poems and bring them into a relationship with us.

This also closes the circle in Kjell Braaten’s music, from „Ragnarok“ to his other albums: to bring what was into a relationship with the present.

And „Ragnarok“ is a good example of this in its combination of old instruments and current technology.

Wie auch die Songs der EP „The Cabin“, die im letzten Monat herauskam ist „Jotun“ kein aktuell komponiertes Stück. Es ist daher ein wenig anders als das, was Kjell Braaten auf seinen Alben „Ferd“ (2020), „Bronseplassen“ (2021) und „Blóta“ (2022) veröffentlicht hat.

„Jotun“ und auch das im Mai folgende „Ragnarök“ zeigen weitere Facetten seines musikalischen Spektrums. Neben seiner eigenen Musik hat Kjell Braaten auch für Theater und Film (zuletzt für die Serie „Vikings Valhalla“) geschrieben. Außerdem stand er im letzten Jahr mit NEBALA auf der Bühne und vorher bereits mit WARDRUNA. Und er war an weiteren Bands beteiligt (z.B. EHWAZ), hat mit verschiedenen Projekten und Künstlern zusammengearbeitet u.a. FOLKET BORTAFOR NORDAVINDEN.

Auch wenn die verschiedenen Projekte und Veröffentlichungen anders sind als die Musik seiner letzten Alben, gibt es doch Überschneidungen, gemeinsame Ideen und Themen. Dies hat sicher auch damit zu tun, dass er immer schon mit verschiedenen Musikstilen und Klangräumen (ob nun natürlichen oder elektronisch erzeugten) gearbeitet hat.
Dies macht auch den Reiz von „Jotun“ aus.

Jotun – „Riesenhaftes“ ‚sichtbar‘ gemacht

Der Beginn des Stückes klingt bedrohlich und ich musste an Szenen aus „Attack On Titan“ denken, in denen die Titanen die Menschen angreifen.

Verschiedene Percussionsinstrumente verleihen dem donnernden Vorangehen dennoch eine gewisse Leichtigkeit. Die einsetzenden Hörner unterstreichen die Vorwärtsbewegung. Geräusche und die tiefe Laute lassen keinen Zweifel daran, dass etwas Unheimliches vorgeht.

Nach einem kurzen Innehalten wird der Marsch fortgesetzt, durchgängig begleitet von Horn und Stimme. Das Ganze hat etwas Beängstigendes und gleichzeitig Erhabenes. Es ist nicht eindeutig, ob sie Gutes oder Böses im Schilde führen.

Das Situation verdichtet sich, da die Intensität der Trommeln zunimmt. Das Ende ist offen.

Das Stück ist perfekt für Situationen, in denen es darum geht, dass sich jemand Ungewissem oder gar Bedrohlichem stellen muss. Ob im Film, einem Videogame oder zu einer Erzählung.

Macht, Weisheit, Naturgewalten und Chaos

Jotun (oder Jötunn) wird meist mit „Riese“ übersetzt. Dass die Jötnar tatsächlich ‚übermenschlich groß‘ sind, geht aus den Geschichten der Eddas nicht hervor. Ihr meist bedrohlicher Charakter allerdings schon.

Die Jötnar sind in der nordischen Mythologie die ersten Wesen, die zu Beginn der Zeit auftauchten. Sie sind mit den Naturgewalten und dem Chaos verbunden und sind oft Gegner der Asen und Wanen und auch der Menschen.  

In der nordischen Mythologie werden die Jötunn als Wesen mit großer Macht und auch Weisheit dargestellt. Aber sie gelten auch als chaotisch und wild.

Jötnar, Riesen, Titanen, Oni, Asura und andere ‚riesenhafte‘ Wesen

Wesen, die Gegenspieler von Göttern oder Menschen sind, gibt es in allen Mythologien und religiösen Schriften. Weil es anscheinend hilfreich ist, einer Bedrohung eine vorstellbare Form zu geben.

In der griechischen Mythologie gibt es die Giganten, riesenhaft und stärker als Menschen. Wesen, die aus dem Blut von Uranus entstanden sein sollen.

In der japanischen Mythologie gibt es die Oni, eine Art von riesenhaften Dämonen, die oft als sehr stark, aber auch als ungeschickt oder töricht dargestellt werden.

In der indischen Mythologie werden Riesen oder riesenhafte Wesen als „Asuras“ bezeichnet. Die Asuras sind eine Gruppe von Wesen, die oft als Feinde der Götter oder „Devas“ dargestellt werden.

Die Liste ließe sich noch weiter fortsetzen. Kurz gesagt: Wesen, die ‚übermenschlich‘ aber nicht unbedingt ‚göttlich‘ sind, die dem Menschen und sogar den Göttern feindlich gegenüberstehen, gibt es in Erzählungen überall auf der Welt.

Kein Wunder, dass ihnen auch Bands wie IN FLAMES („Jotun“ auf „Whoracle“), SKÁLMÖLD „(Með Jötnum“ auf „Með Vættum“) und ENSLAVED („Jotunblod“ auf „Mardraum“) Songs gewidmet haben, wenn sie in vielen Geschichten und Legenden solch eine wichtige Rolle spielen.

„Jotun“, the new single by Kjell Braaten (release date 18 April 2023)

Today Kjel Braaten releases a new single, „Jotun“. Like the songs from the EP „The Cabin“, which came out last month, „Jotun“ is not a currently composed track. It is therefore a little different from what Kjell Braaten has released on his albums „Ferd“ (2020), „Bronseplassen“ (2021) and „Blóta“ (2022).

„Jotun“ and also the following „Ragnarök“ in May show further facets of his musical spectrum. Besides his music, Kjell Braaten has also written for theatre and film (most recently for the series „Vikings Valhalla“). He also performed on stage with NEBALA last year and with WARDRUNA before that. And he has been involved in other bands (e.g. EHWAZ) and collaborated with various projects and artists including FOLKET BORTAFOR NORDAVINDEN.

Even though the various projects and releases are different from the music on his last albums, there are overlaps, common ideas and themes. This certainly has to do with the fact that he has always worked with different musical styles and sound spaces (whether natural or electronically generated). This is also what makes „Jotun“ so appealing.

Jotun – ‚Giantness‘ made ‚visible‘

The beginning of the piece sounds threatening and I had to think of scenes from „Attack On Titan“ where the Titans attack the humans.

Various percussion instruments nevertheless lend a certain lightness to the thunderous advance. The horns that come in underline the forward movement. Noises and the low lute leave no doubt that something sinister is going on.

After a brief pause, the march continues, accompanied throughout by a horn and voice. The whole thing has something frightening and at the same time sublime. It is not clear whether they are up to good or evil.

The situation thickens as the intensity of the drums increases. With an open end.

The piece is perfect for situations where someone has to face uncertainty or even threat. Whether in a film, a video game or a narrative.

Power, wisdom, forces of nature and chaos

Jotun (or Jötunn) is usually translated as ‚giant‘. That the Jötnar are actually ’superhumanly large‘ is not clear from the stories of the Eddas. Their mostly threatening character, however, does.

In Norse mythology, the Jötnar are the first beings to appear at the beginning of time. They are associated with the forces of nature and chaos and are often opponents of the Aesir and the Vanir, as well as of humans. 

In Norse mythology, the Jötunn are depicted as beings with great power and also wisdom. But they are also considered chaotic and wild.

Jötnar, giants, titans, oni, asura and other ‚giant-like‘ beings.

Beings who are opposites of gods or humans exist in all mythologies and religious writings. Because it is apparently helpful to give an imaginable form to a threat.

In Greek mythology, there are giants, bigger and stronger than humans. Beings that are said to have been created from the blood of Uranus.

In Japanese mythology, there are the Oni, a type of giant-like demon, often portrayed as very strong but also clumsy or foolish.

In Indian mythology, giants or giant-like beings are called „Asuras“. The Asuras are a group of beings who are often portrayed as enemies of the gods or „devas“.

The list could go on and on. In short, beings who are ’superhuman‘ but not necessarily ‚divine‘, who are hostile to humans and even the gods, exist in narratives all over the world.

No wonder that bands like IN FLAMES („Jotun“ on „Whoracle“), SKÁLMÖLD „(Með Jötnum“ on „Með Vættum“) and ENSLAVED („Jotunblod“ on „Mardraum“) have also dedicated songs to them when they play such an important role in many stories and legends.
