Was war bisher?

It is now two years since I introduced “Echoes of North” by Christine Kammerer here and also reported on a very special kind of whisky tasting. Now there is news from Christine Kammerer: she has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a new album, entitled “The Woman They Called Witch”.

What came before?

“Whisky and Witches” combines the history of whisky with songs about the region where it originated, songs that describe whisky itself, and stories about the role women played in whisky production. It explores why women were labelled and persecuted as witches: as a means of excluding women from the profitable production of aquavitae – alcohol, including whisky.

Christine Kammerer is a Danish singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and composer. She lives in Scotland, where she explores Scottish-Scandinavian connections through music history. Her work is also consistently concerned with the history of women, as is particularly evident in “Whisky and Witches”.

Kickstarter campaign for a new album

The album “The Woman They Called Witch”, for which Christine Kammerer has now launched a Kickstarter campaign, will be a journey in two parts, produced as two albums between 2026 and 2028.

The horrors and legacy of the witch hunts

“The Woman They Called Witch” remembers the horrors and consequences of the witch hunts and burnings. They left behind a trauma whose effects can still be felt today.

Through these albums, Christine Kammerer places the continuing legacy of the witch hunts in the context of the experiences women still face today, as well as her own personal journey.

She explains:

By inserting my own lived experience into the writing of music anchored in history, I wish to create an immersive dimension that will unapologetically unveil our ancestral wounds.

Historical background and a personal journey

The albums are also the result of academic and musical research centred on the female experience and the connection to the power of the divine feminine.

Already in her Master’s thesis at the University of Copenhagen, Christine Kammerer examined interpretations of the female body across different musical genres.
With her bands GJALDULEI and JOTUNGER, she has explored the divine feminine, goddesses and female figures in Norse and Celtic mythology.
She draws on these elements to ask how much being a woman today is shaped by what was lost in the flames of the witch hunts.

She refers to a time when wise women, seers and goddesses were held in high esteem within society.
Through music, she explores why and how such a dramatic shift in attitudes towards women came about.
This shift has also contributed to many girls and women living in a constant state of alertness, preventing the forces of growth from flowing freely through body, soul and voice.

Melodies and lyrics from execution sites and stone circles

Part One – the album that will be released first – brings this history, grief and anger to light and seeks to reveal the strength that emerges from reclaiming power and agency. It is intended as a place for feeling, healing and setting out together on a new path.

Part Two focuses on healing and restoring the connection with the divine feminine – both on a personal level and within the community. At the same time, it follows the life journey of women as reflected in goddesses from different cultures and traditions.

Over the past ten years, Christine Kammerer has collected melodies and lyrics at places such as execution sites, burial mounds, stone circles and memorials in Denmark, Norway, Scotland and Germany. These are complemented by poetry and material from her own diaries and from periods of therapy.

This material will also form the basis for workshops taking place between 2027 and 2029, in collaboration with various institutions.

Confronting a dark chapter

Taken together, this represents a comprehensive approach to addressing the question of how we can come to terms with the consequences of the witch hunts, the associated loss of knowledge and experience, and the continuing impact on women’s experiences today – in a way that might make healing possible, in the sense of wholeness and reconnection.

The albums are intended to offer an opportunity to engage personally, through music, with the darkest chapter in women’s history, to create a space for healing, and to serve as a musical memorial to our female ancestors.

Musically, the album will be more in a rock direction than what listeners have previously come to expect from Christine Kammerer, with symphonic and Gothic elements shaping its sound. And, of course, there will be her expressive and versatile voice, capable of sounding both powerful and vulnerable, conveying the many facets of both the subject matter and the music.

(English version below)

NEBALA startet Kickstarter-Kampagne für „Rites of Passage“

Große Shows brauchen große Festivals

Die Kickstarter-Kampagne unterstützen „Rites of Passage“: A Journey Through Life’s Transformative

NEBALA launches Kickstarter campaign for „Rites of Passage“

Things have been quiet around NEBALA for a while. But now there’s good news: a new album is in the works, and it’s set to be launched through a Kickstarter campaign. The title hints at the album’s theme: life’s transitional phases and the rites associated with them. Musically, the foundation will again consist of elements from Nordic and Indian music.

New Album and a Surprise

The big surprise is that Jonas Lorentzen, the creative mind behind NEBALA, has brought on Christopher Juul from HEILUNG to join the project and complete the album together.

After NEBALA released the album „Lustuz Laþu Wōþuz Alu“ in July 2022, they followed up with two outstanding shows at Castlefest (see here) and the Midgardsblót Festival. The show at Midgardsblót was recorded and released as the live album „Live at the Blót“ in April 2023.

Afterward, NEBALA performed live with a reconfigured lineup and in a different format. There are various reasons for this, as Jonas Lorentzen explained to me in a conversation (you will soon be able to read more from this interview on metal-heads.de).

Big Shows Need Big Festivals

Large shows, like the ones NEBALA performed at these two festivals, require significant funding. This is usually only feasible for major festivals. However, big festivals tend to favour bands that are guaranteed to attract large audiences.
For NEBALA, this meant that the offers they received were insufficient to continue performing in their previous format.

Several concepts were explored, but their execution had to be revised when Kjell Braaten (who played a significant role in both the album’s creation and the shows) fell ill. NEBALA then performed at Festival Mediaval with a reduced lineup and presented a different concept at Midgardsblót with the „Blót Rave“.

Further development of ideas

Jonas Lorentzen then continued developing ideas for NEBALA’s future on his own. There was never really a standstill, as Jonas kept working on his concepts.
The key developments in brief: Jonas met the italian multi-instrumentalist Ghilli Prati with whom he connected musically and beyond. Then, they had the opportunity to record in a studio for a few days.

In the middle of the recording sessions, NEBALA parted ways with By Norse Music (the label through which the aforementioned albums were released). Although the split was amicable, NEBALA now found themselves without a label.

Jonas reached out to his friend Christopher Juul to see if he’d be interested in working on the album together. He was, and together they will finish the recording, mixing, and mastering.

Supporting the Kickstarter-campaign: „Rites of Passage“ A Journey Through Life’s Transformative Moments

A Kickstarter campaign was launched this week, aiming to involve the people who can ultimately make the project a success.

I believe it’s definitely worth supporting the project. If NEBALA continues to evolve their Nordic-Indian sound, it will undoubtedly be musically exciting and deeply moving.

Exploring rites of passage both thematically and sonically, and thus accompanying each person’s journey through life, is an ambitious project. But it’s also an important one, as the transitions, structures, and meaningful rituals that guide us seem to be fading from our ‚modern‘ world.

The transitions from one life phase to the next (from childhood to adolescence, adulthood, becoming parents, etc.) are both gradual and abrupt. People often feel ‚thrust‘ into the next stage of life. Rites of passage can help make this process more conscious and self-determined.

Throughout human history, there have always been structures marked by rituals to guide these processes—such as initiation rites or even the sacraments in Christian religions.

With „Rites of Passage“, NEBALA embraces this concept and will accompany life’s journey with songs that draw on the thoughts, texts, and musical elements of Indian, Nordic, and early Christian mysticism.

This sounds very exciting, and I’m already looking forward to hearing the new songs and the album as a whole.
