Eine tragische Geschichte

verbirgt sich eigentlich hinter dem Musikprojekt AORTHA. Der Macher und Metal-Maniac hinter dem Projekt ist Predrag Glogovac, auch kurz Peda genannt. Er hat mit einer Schar hochwertiger Gastmusiker das Album „MONOLIT“ veröffentlicht. Es ist eines der besten Alben, die dieses Jahr veröffentlicht wurden. Das Album „Monolit“ von AORTHA ist ein Meisterwerk! Es ist die perfekte Show mit allem, was packenden Heavy Metal ausmacht. Dabei findet man eine super Balance zwischen rauer aggressiver Härte und harmonischen Melodien.

Der fulminante Start in den 80’er Jahren

Hi Peda! Willkommen zu unserem Interview mit ‚metal-heads.de‘!

MH: Bevor wir auf dein neustes Projekt AORTHA zu sprechen kommen, lass uns ein in der Zeit zurückreisen, genauer gesagt in die 80’er Jahre. Du warst noch jung, als du mit einigen anderen die Band MONOLIT gegründet hattest.

• Kannst Du Dich noch daran erinnern, was die Initialzündung für die Gründung der Band war?
• Mit welchen Träumen oder Erwartungen seid ihr an die Sache herangegangen?
• Was hast Du damals an der Metal-Szene besonders geschätzt?
• Wie erfolgreich waren die ersten Jahre? Wie ging es so voran?

Peda: Ich werde mit den Jahren immer vergesslicher, aber ich erinnere mich sehr gut an diese glorreichen Zeiten. Die 80er waren für uns DIE Zeit, um Metalhead zu sein. Wie sollte es auch nicht sein, wenn man mit all diesen Killer-Bands wie Maiden, Priest, Motorhead, Slayer, Metallica… aufgewachsen ist. Dies war mehr als genug, um Feuer zu fangen und eine Band zu gründen.

Wir wollten einfach wie sie sein und Musik machen! Spielen, auf der Bühne stehen, wie unsere Idole. Das war unser Traum und unser Ziel. Zum Glück gab es unter allen Metalheads in meiner Stadt (und das waren damals viele) vier von uns, die wie geschaffen dafür waren. Und wir waren gerade mal 17-18 Jahre alt, als wir den ersten Song aufnahmen. Die damalige Metal-Szene war, was soll ich sagen, die beste Zeit überhaupt, um ein Metalhead zu sein und sie zu durchleben. Diese Zeiten sind unvergesslich und manchmal tut es mir leid für die jüngere Generation, dass sie so etwas nie erleben wird.

Der Balkan-Krieg setzte allem ein Ende!

MH: Dann kam der Balkan-Krieg.

• Wie überraschend kam der Krieg damals über Euch? Was macht das mit einem (jungen) Menschen?
• Hast du damals auch mit der Musik pausiert? Oder hat dich die Musik nie losgelassen?

Peda: Von 88-91, als die Band existierte, waren wir in unserem Land, also Jugoslawien, für mein Verständnis sehr erfolgreich. Obwohl wir es nicht geschafft haben, ein offizielles Album herauszubringen, ist um uns herum viel passiert. Wir spielten Live-Shows, brachten 1990 ein Demo heraus, wurden in Magazinen gefeatured und hatten in den ersten zwei Jahren unseres Bestehens eine große Fangemeinde im ganzen Land. Wir wurden oft als die nächste große Band bezeichnet. Und ich kann ehrlich sagen, ja, wir waren so gut. Eine glänzende Zukunft lag vor uns.

Diese Zukunft wurde durch den Krieg für immer gestoppt!

Von allen Dingen in unserer Welt gibt es nichts Schlimmeres, das jemandem passieren könnte. Das war nicht nur das Ende für die Band, sondern von allem, was wir bis dahin kannten. Ein Teil von uns, der noch am Leben ist, ist für das Leben gezeichnet und verdorben. Dieses Gefühl wird nie verschwinden. Wir haben das Leben verloren…unser Leben, wie es war und wie es sein sollte. Nicht nur musikalisch oder bandtechnisch, sondern als Ganzes.

Vier Mitglieder von uns waren bald über die ganze Welt verteilt. Ich bin 93 zufällig nach Norwegen gegangen, aber es war nicht geplant, Norwegen war damals fast das einzige Land in Europa, das Leute aus dem kriegsgebeutelten Jugoslawien aufnahm. Im selben Jahr ging Sänger/Gitarrist Slobo nach Kanada, Bassist Marin blieb im kriegsgebeutelten Mostar und Schlagzeuger Zlatko wurde im selben Jahr im Krieg getötet.

Flucht nach Norwegen

MH: Du wohnst nun in Norwegen.

• Warum hast du dich für dieses Land entschieden?
• Was schätzt du an diesem Land?

Peda: Ich habe die ganzen 90er Jahre hindurch in Norwegen gespielt. Die erste Band war mit dem Sänger der heute sehr populären norwegischen Popnfolk-Band Violet Road. Er ist eigentlich ein Metalhead. 2000 hat er aufgehört zu spielen (und das meine ich wörtlich). Danach habe ich mit dem ersten Schlagzeuger von Enslaved, Gehenna und Twin Obscenity gesprochen, es ausprobiert und gespielt. Habe es auch mit anderen Musikern versucht.

Ich war sogar als Gitarrist im Gespräch mit der damals sehr bekannten Band Theatre Of Tragedy. Doch diese entschieden sich für einen Drummer als Gitarristen, der nur ein bisschen Rhythmus spielen konnte, anstatt sich für einen professionellen erfahrenen Gitarristen zu entscheiden. Das hat mir den Rest gegeben und es verging mir die Lust. Ich bin gegen die Wand gefahren und habe 1999 einfach aufgehört zu spielen. Aber die Musik hat mich nie verlassen!

Das Leben in einer anderen Heimat!

MH: Jetzt sind viele Jahre seitdem vergangen und du hast das Projekt AORTHA realisiert.

• Warum die späte Entscheidung dieses Projekt AORTHA zu starten?
• Hattest Du sehr konkrete Vorstellungen von den Musikern, die dich dabei unterstützen sollten?
• Letztlich sind es ja sehr viele geworden?
• Hattest du geahnt, dass es so groß werden würde?

Peda: Ich habe im selben Jahr geheiratet und bin, wie soll ich sagen, ein ganz normaler Familienvater geworden 🙂 Norwegen ist das Land, in dem ich mich entschieden habe zu bleiben, und abgesehen vom kalten Wetter und den manchmal kalten Menschen ist es ein sehr gutes Land mit vielen guten Seiten. 30 Jahre meines Lebens habe ich hier verbracht und ein großer Teil von mir ist Norweger geworden.

Im Jahr 2006 hatte ich versucht MONOLIT zu reformieren. Wir nahmen ein Album auf, das 2007 von One Records aus Belgrad veröffentlicht wurde. Wir kamen aus drei verschiedenen Ländern und so hat es einfach nicht funktioniert. Das war’s! 2008 war das zweite Ende für MONOLIT. Im selben Jahr beschloss ich zum zweiten Mal, mich mit allem zu beschäftigen, was mir im Leben gefällt, außer Gitarre spielen.

In den folgenden Jahren hatte ich sporadisch gespielt und ein paar Ideen aufgenommen, aber das war’s dann auch schon. Bis 2020, also mehr oder weniger 12 Jahre, gab es musikalisch gesehen nichts in meinem Leben. Natürlich steht Metal jeden Tag auf meiner Playlist, aber da kamen keine Gedanken auf selber wieder die Gitarre in die Hand zu nehmen geschweige denn eine Band zu gründen.

Die Musik ist ein Teil von mir!

Aber tief in meinem Inneren hat sich immer etwas zusammengebraut. Man kann nie aufhören. Ich sehe das jetzt sehr deutlich. Egal, ob man Musiker ist oder was auch immer man in seinem Leben mit Leidenschaft gemacht hat. Ich denke, dass so etwas immer in jedem von uns präsent ist, auch wenn man es begraben möchte. Das war zumindest in meinem Fall so. Wie man so schön sagt: Es liegt im Blut. Es ist ein Teil von mir. Ich habe es nur vergessen und für längere Zeit vergraben, aber es war da!

Die Entstehung von AORTHA!

Als Covid uns traf und ich viel Zeit zu Hause verbrachte und mir eines Tages alte Demos anhörte, beschloss ich: „Das ist es!“. Ich verspürte einfach den starken Drang diese Musik aus mir herauszuholen und es noch einmal zu versuchen. Wie man so schön sagt: Alle guten Dinge sind drei! Es war eine Sache von jetzt oder nie. Dieses Material ist für das MONOLIT-Comeback-Album gemacht. Der Großteil der Songideen, abgesehen von Intro/Outro und dem Opener Those That Should Not Exist, sind mehr oder weniger alte Sachen. Der epische Song (Madness) geht sogar bis ins Jahr 1991 zurück.

Viele Musiker im Kopf

Seit diesem Funken im Jahr 2020 hatte ich alle Musiker und Sänger im Kopf. Igor Paspalj (der übrigens in der Guitar World zum Gitarristen des Jahres 2020 gewählt wurde), Branko Stiković, Saša Kapor und Slobodan Ernjaković sind nicht nur meine Kumpels, sondern auch großartige Gitarristen aus meinem Heimatland und waren die erste Wahl. Am Schlagzeug dachte ich eigentlich zunächst an Van Wiliams von Nevermore. Wir haben mehr als nur ein paar Gespräche geführt, aber zu der Zeit war seine Frau ziemlich krank und nach ein paar Monaten war es für ihn und für mich einfach klar, dass er nicht dabei sein kann. Dann war George Kolias von Nile im Gespräch. Er mochte die Songs. Fast zur gleichen Zeit hatte ich schon mit Hannes gesprochen und hatte auch ihn im Hinterkopf.

Das Drummer-Dilemma

Allerdings führt mein Wunsch beide Drummer auf der Platte zu haben, zu Problemen. George hatte mir mitgeteilt, dass er mal sehr schlechte Erfahrungen gemacht hatte, als er mal mit einem anderen Drummer ein Album einspielte. Er würde so etwas nie wieder tun. Das war dann leider der Wendepunkt und er lehnte so eine Art Zusammenarbeit freundlicherweise ab. Ich möchte aber noch hinzufügen, dass er und Hannes sich kennen und nichts zwischen ihnen steht. Ich musste mich aber nun für einen der beiden entscheiden.

Am Ende fiel meine Wahl auf Hannes. Die Entscheidung fiel ziemlich schnell, weil ich dachte, dass er besser zu dieser Musik passt. Und besonders nachdem ich ein paar Songs mit Hannes gehört hatte, fühlte es sich einfach so natürlich an, dass es das war! Er ist eine Killermaschine und egal wie sehr er gelobt wird, er hat das 10-fache davon verdient. Außerdem ist er bodenständig und ein rundum guter Kerl.

Der Bassist

Ursprünglich war der Bassist der legendäre Hal Patino von King Diamond. Er hat tatsächlich den Bass für 2 Songs aufgenommen (die ich habe) und zu dieser Zeit lebte er in Deutschland, ist aber innerhalb kürzester Zeit zurück nach Dänemark gezogen, wo er keine guten Studios zur Verfügung hatte, um weiterzumachen. Daher wurde die Entscheidung getroffen, mit dem erstaunlichen Bassisten aus NY, Jacob Umansky, durch das ganze Album zu gehen. Aber es war schon allein eine einzigartige, fast unwirkliche Erfahrung mit einem Idol wie Hal zu sprechen und zwei Songs von ihm aufnehmen zu lassen, besonders weil ich ein großer King Diamond Fan bin.

Die Sängerauswahl

Sänger! Der erste in der Reihe war mein musikalischer Bruder Diego Valdez. Er ist der einzige, der wirklich bei jedem Song dabei ist, und er ist der Klebstoff, der alles zusammenhält. Ohne ihn wäre das Ganze wohl nicht so gut wie es ist. Und er ist hier auch viel mehr involviert als nur als Sänger. Netta war die offensichtliche Wahl für mich, sie ist eine unglaublich gute Sängerin. Alessia war eine weitere natürliche weibliche Wahl und ja, sie hat diese Songs in eine andere Dimension gehoben. Kyle! Ich habe ihn einfach in vielen Songs gehört, die ich hatte. Punkt. Das war zusammen mit Diego, um ein komplettes Album in Bezug auf die Hauptsänger zu haben.

Der Song „Divine Future“, bei dem Snake der Hauptsänger ist, wurde für ihn und/oder Messiah von Candlemass gemacht. Diese 2 waren die einzigen, die ich im Kopf hatte und sogar die Melodien wurden für sie gemacht. Ich könnte mir gut vorstellen, dass auch Messiah diesen Song singt, aber ich bin überglücklich, dass Snake selbst hier singt. Das war ein wahr gewordener Traum, muss ich sagen. Ich muss hinzufügen, dass ich Messiah am Ende nicht kontaktiert habe, es war sehr schwierig, ihn zu finden und er hat irgendwie aufgehört zu singen.

Nicht alle Wünsche gehen in Erfüllung!

Christian ist ein alter Kumpel von meinem Kumpel Ronnie Björnström (er hat übrigens die Vorproduktion gemacht und ist selbst sehr gut im Mixen). Abgesehen davon, dass ich monatelang auf Snake gewartet habe, um seine Parts aufzunehmen, war es also nicht so schwierig, all diese wunderbaren Leute und Sänger zu haben. Es gibt noch zwei weitere bekannte Gesichter, die auf dieser Platte sein sollten. Phil Anselmo und Chuck Billy!

Ja, besonders der Umstand, dass Phil in Erwägung zog meine Songs zu singen, verursachte mehr als nur ein sehr gutes Gefühl. Bei Phil war es so, dass er tatsächlich „Ja“ gesagt hat (er ist ein alter Kumpel von Kyle) und er sollte mit Kyle singen. Die beiden haben ihr ganzes Leben lang darüber gesprochen, etwas zusammen zu machen, und das war der perfekte Moment.

Das war im Sommer 2021, aber das war die gleiche Zeit, als die Pantera-Feier für Phil schon auf dem Tisch lag und er einfach keine Zeit hatte, sie zu machen. Für Chuck, auch wenn er den Song mochte, waren die Lyrics wohl nicht so passend, denke ich. Wie auch immer, große Anerkennung natürlich an beide.

Zu guter Letzt sollte ein Gitarrist, vor dem ich großen Respekt habe, Mark McGee von Vicious Rumors, auch dabei sein, aber ich hatte einfach keinen Platz mehr. Es war schon voll mit Schreddern 🙂

Ich wusste von Anfang an, dass dies ein großes Projekt und eine große Aufgabe sein würde. Aber ich wollte auf keinen Fall einen Rückzieher machen!

Die hochwertigen physischen Releases

MH: So ein Projekt ist natürlich aufwendig, organisatorisch und auch finanziell. Man muss dabei bedenken, dass das Album von vorne bis hinten auf höchstem Niveau mit einer großen Schar an Musikern produziert worden ist. Und nicht nur das! Man bedenke auch das hochwertige CD-Book und nun ist vor kurzem die Vinyl des Albums herausgekommen. Das ist schon ein verdammt großer Akt!

• Wie stemmt man so was, wenn man auf sich alleine gestellt ist?

Peda: Ja, das ganze Projekt zu vollenden und bei der Veröffentlichung selbst auf LP und CD den Berg zu erklimmen war schon eine Leistung. Ich habe 2 Jahre meines Lebens darauf verwendet. Alleine der Austausch aller Anrufe, E-Mails und Nachrichten von und zu den anderen Mitgliedern war ein Albtraum. Aber in fast allen Fällen ein cooler Albtraum. Es gab Tage, an denen ich Nachrichten vom Bassisten bekam, der seine Parts aufnahm und auch vom Sänger, der sie aufnahm. Und Studio ist Studio. In einem Moment dem einen und Sekunden später dem anderen zu antworten, war schon verrückt genug. Und wir sprechen über Aufnahmen in New York und gleichzeitig in Helsinki. Aber ich bereue nichts und würde nie etwas davon ändern.

Letztlich geht es dabei immer ums Geld!

Ich habe nur gehofft, dass die Platte bei einem guten Label veröffentlicht wird. Es gab positives Feedback von zwei der größten Metal-Labels, aber schlussendlich ist nichts daraus geworden. Ich denke, auch wenn sie die Musik mochten, hatten sie Angst davor, wie sie mit einer Band mit 14 Musikern Geld verdienen sollten. Und ich verstehe sie in gewisser Weise. Die meisten Musiker hier haben ihre eigenen Karrieren und es wird nicht möglich sein, mit allen auf Tour zu gehen, aber es gibt eine Möglichkeit. Aber leider haben sie dem hier keine Chance oder Option gegeben. Letztlich geht es dabei immer ums Geld!

Die Platte musste physisch herauskommen und ich habe einfach gute Plattenfirmen in Europa gefunden und sie gemacht oder besser gesagt, unabhängig veröffentlicht. Sowohl die LP als auch die CD wurden nicht in großen Mengen gedruckt, so dass ich hier sozusagen hinter den Ausgaben zurückbleibe. Ich hoffe nur, dass die meisten davon am Ende verkauft werden, damit einige Ausgaben gedeckt werden können.

Es ist dasselbe mit den Studios in Schweden, wo Mix und Master gemacht werden (btw. Mix: Fredrik Nordström / Master: Jens Bogren), ich stehe hinter allen Ausgaben. Es war die Zeit von Korona und normalerweise reise ich jedes Jahr viel, aber da 2020/21 niemand reist, habe ich beschlossen, das Geld stattdessen hier zu investieren. Und auch wenn es keine kleinen Beträge sind, bereue ich keine Sekunde davon. Das war es wert!

Die Intention des Cover-Artworks

MH: Das Coverartwork hat eine Botschaft zu bieten. Wir sehen bedrohliche Dämonen, die in ihrer individuellen Gestaltung bekannten Institutionen oder Personengruppen zuzuordnen sind.

• Würdest Du uns das etwas näher erläutern?
• Sind diese Dämonen das Übel unserer Zeit?

Peda: Ja, diese Dämonen auf dem Cover sind die Übel unserer Zeit. Die gleichen Übel waren schon immer um uns herum, aber es scheint, dass sie heute noch mehr da sind. Das Mädchen (Aortha) repräsentiert den Menschen, dich, mich, die Menschen, die immer noch auf dem Boden sind, umgeben von allem, wozu wir gedrängt werden!

Krieg (rechts), ‚Pharma‘ (links im Hemd), ‚Religion‘ (Hand unten rechts), ‚Finanzwesen‘ (linke Hand), andere Dämonen wie alltägliche negative Menschen, Eifersucht, Dolchstöße in den Rücken… du kannst gerne deine eigene Meinung äußern. Sie ist die Hauptwächterin/Göttin, die „an den Türen“ steht und mit dem Herzen entscheidet/abwägt, wer passieren darf und wer nicht. Es geht nicht nur um „Himmel oder Hölle“, sondern darum, ob du überhaupt irgendwo hingehst. Es hängt davon ab, was man im Leben getan hat. Das hat man vielleicht schon 1000 Mal gehört, aber nicht auf diese Weise. Und nicht zuletzt ist es nie genug, dies im Leben zu wiederholen.

Ist die Welt verrückt?

MH: Ein Song heißt „When All Around You Is Madness“. 

• Findest Du, dass dieser Song die heutige Zeit widerspiegelt? Wie empfindest du das momentane Zeitalter?

Peda: Ja, der Madness-Song spiegelt die heutige Zeit wider, aber auch die Vergangenheit und leider auch die Zukunft, wenn wir als Menschen nicht radikal etwas tun. Das ist die einzige Welt und das einzige Leben, das wir haben, und warum, das werde ich wahrscheinlich nie verstehen, wir tun Dinge, die wir tun, und warum ist das alles notwendig. Die Welt war noch nie zuvor so am Rande der Existenz und warum sollten wir sie selbst zerstören, das ist eine gute Frage für uns alle. Jeder von uns kann und sollte in diesem Leben etwas Besseres tun. Schließlich sind wir nur Durchreisende hier und warum sollten wir nicht einfach eine verdammt gute Reise machen, während wir hier sind.

Das Ende einer Reise? Ein musikalisches Testament?

MH: Ist dieses Album nun das Ende einer Reise, die im Jahr 1988 startete? Oder siehst Du es eher als Neuanfang? Womit bis du momentan musikalisch beschäftigt? Was sind deine Pläne?

Peda: Ursprünglich sagte ich, dass dies ist mein musikalisches Testament sein würde. Ich sah es als Ende der ganzen Monolit-Saga, die im Jahr 1988 startete. Es ist natürlich nicht die Reise, wie sie hätte sein sollen bzw. können, wenn der Krieg 1992 nie stattgefunden hätte. Es würde sicher eine ganz andere Geschichte sein und es hätte viele Alben von uns in all den Jahren gegeben. Aber es sollte nicht sein.

Was ich gerne hätte, wäre ein weiteres AORTHA-Album und möglicherweise einige Live-Shows als echte Band und Einheit. Ob das jemals passieren wird? Nun, wir werden sehen. Ich habe schon eine Menge Material, aber ob es jemals das Licht der Welt erblicken wird, hängt auch von den Leuten und Fans selbst ab.

Ich hoffe, dass es mehr Leute gibt, die diese Musik entdecken werden. Es kommt nicht oft vor, dass man heutzutage vollwertigen, reinen Metal findet, der mit Herz und Verstand gemacht ist. Für manche ist es Old School, für manche ist es nicht schwer genug, für manche ist es zu schwer, für manche hat es keine 7 oder 8 Saiten, für manche ist es nicht modern oder sauber genug produziert. Aber trotzdem, es ist einfach ein verdammt gutes Album. Wenn das am Ende, sagen wir mal, nur auf reinem Underground-Niveau bleibt, dann gibt es kaum eine Chance, weiterzumachen, aber lassen wir es dabei, sag niemals nie.

The brilliant start in the 80s

Hi Peda! Welcome to our interview with ‚metal-heads.de‘!

MH: Before we talk about your latest project AORTHA, let’s travel back in time, to the 80s to be precise. You were still young when you founded the band MONOLIT with a few friends

• Can you still remember what sparked the formation of the band?
• What dreams or expectations did you approach the project with?
• What did you particularly appreciate about the metal scene back then?
• How successful were the first few years? How did things progress?

Peda: I get more and more forgetful as the years go by, but I remember those glorious times very well. The 80s were THE time for us to be metalheads. How could it not be when you grew up with all those killer bands like Maiden, Priest, Motorhead, Slayer, Metallica…. This was more than enough to catch fire and start a band.

We just wanted to be like them and make music! To play, to be on stage, like our idols. That was our dream and our goal. Luckily, there were four of us among all the metalheads in my town (and there were a lot of them back then) who were made for it. And we were only 17-18 years old when we recorded the first song. The metal scene back then was, what can I say, the best time ever to be a metalhead and live through it. Those times are unforgettable and sometimes I feel sorry for the younger generation that they will never experience something like that.

The Balkan war put an end to everything!

MH: Then came the Balkan war.

• How surprising was the war to you back then? What does that do to a (young) person?
• Did you also take a break from music back then? Or did music never let you go?

Peda: From 88-91, when the band existed, we were very successful in our country, Yugoslavia, as I understand it. Although we didn’t manage to release an official album, a lot happened around us. We played live shows, released a demo in 1990, were featured in magazines and in the first two years of our existence we had a huge fan base all over the country. We were often referred to as the next great band. And I can honestly say, yes, we were that good. We had a bright future ahead of us.

This future was stopped forever by the war!

Of all the things in our world, there is nothing worse that could happen to anyone. It wasn’t just the end for the band, it was the end of everything we knew up to that point. A part of us that is still alive is scarred and tainted for life. This feeling will never go away. We have lost life…our life as it was and as it should be. Not just musically or band-wise, but as a whole.

Four of us were soon spread all over the world. I went to Norway in ’93 by chance, but it wasn’t planned. Norway was almost the only country in Europe at the time that accepted people from war-torn Yugoslavia. In the same year singer/guitarist Slobo went to Canada, bassist Marin stayed in war-torn Mostar and drummer Zlatko was killed in the war in the same year.

Escape to Norway

MH: You now live in Norway.

• Why did you choose this country?
• What do you like about this country?

Peda: I played in Norway throughout the 90s. The first band was with the singer of the now very popular Norwegian pop folk band Violet Road. He is actually a metalhead. He stopped playing in 2000 (and I mean that literally). After that I talked to the first drummer of Enslaved, Gehenna and Twin Obscenity, tried it out and played it. I also tried it with other musicians.

I was even in discussion as a guitarist with the then very well-known band Theatre Of Tragedy. But they opted for a drummer as a guitarist who could only play a little rhythm instead of a professional, experienced guitarist. That was the last straw for me and I lost interest. I hit the wall and simply stopped playing in 1999. But the music never left me!

Life in a new homeland!

MH: Now many years have passed since then and you have realized the AORTHA project.

• Why the late decision to launch this AORTHA project?
• Did you have very specific ideas about the musicians who should support you?
• Did you know it would be this big?

Peda: I got married the same year and became, how can I put it, a normal family man 🙂 Norway is the country I have chosen to stay in, and apart from the cold weather and sometimes cold people, it is a very good country with many good sides. I have spent 30 years of my life here and a big part of me has become Norwegian.

In 2006 I tried to reform MONOLIT. We recorded an album that was released by One Records from Belgrade in 2007. We came from three different countries and it just didn’t work out that way. That was it! 2008 was the second end for MONOLIT. In the same year, I decided for the second time to do everything I like in life except playing guitar.

In the following years, I played sporadically and recorded a few ideas, but nothing more. Until 2020, so more or less 12 years, there was nothing musically in my life. Of course, metal was on my playlist every day, but there were no thoughts of picking up the guitar again, let alone forming a band.

Music is a part of me!

But deep inside me, something was always brewing. You can never stop. I see that very clearly now. Whether you’re a musician or whatever you’ve been passionate about in your life. I think that something like that is always present in each of us, even if you want to bury it. At least that was the case for me. As they say, it’s in the blood. It’s a part of me. I just forgot about it and buried it for a long time, but it was there!

The creation of AORTHA!

When Covid hit us and I was spending a lot of time at home listening to old demos one day, I decided: „This is it!“. I just felt very strong urge to do this, also take this music out of me and try one more time, as they say, third luck. It was a matter of now or never. This material is made for the MONOLIT comeback album. Most of the song ideas, apart from the intro/outro and the opener Those That Should Not Exist, are more or less old stuff. The epic song (Madness) even goes back to 1991.

A lot of musicians in mind

Since that spark in 2020, I had all the musicians and singers in my head. Igor Paspalj (who, by the way, was voted Guitarist of the Year 2020 in Guitar World), Branko Stiković, Saša Kapor and Slobodan Ernjaković are not only my buddies, but also great guitarists from my home country and were the first choice. On drums, I was actually thinking of Van Wiliams from Nevermore at first. We had more than a few conversations, but at the time his wife was quite ill and after a few months it was just clear to him and to me that he couldn’t be there. Then George Kolias from Nile came up. He liked the songs. At almost the same time, I had already spoken to Hannes and had him in the back of my mind too.

The drummer dilemma

However, my wish to have both drummers on the record led to problems. George had told me that he once had a very bad experience when he recorded an album with another drummer. He would never do anything like that again. Unfortunately, that was the turning point and he kindly turned down any kind of collaboration. But I would like to add that he and Hannes know each other and there is nothing between them. But now I had to choose one of them.

In the end, I chose Hannes. The decision was made pretty quickly because I thought he was a better fit for this music. And especially after hearing a few songs with Hannes, it just felt so natural that this was it! He’s a killing machine and no matter how much praise he gets, he deserves 10 times more than that. He’s also down to earth and an all round good guy.

The bassist

Originally the bass player was the legendary Hal Patino from King Diamond. He actually recorded the bass for 2 songs (which I have) and at the time he was living in Germany, but within a very short time moved back to Denmark where he had no good studios available to continue. So the decision was made to go through the whole album with the amazing bass player from NY, Jacob Umansky. But just talking to an idol like Hal and having him record two songs was a unique, almost surreal experience, especially since I’m a huge King Diamond fan.

The choice of singers

The first in line was my musical brother Diego Valdez. He’s the only one who’s really on every song and he’s the glue that holds everything together. Without him, the whole thing probably wouldn’t be as good as it is. And he’s also much more involved here than just as a singer. Netta was the obvious choice for me, she’s an incredibly good singer. Alessia was another natural female choice and yes, she took these songs to another dimension. Kyle. I just heard him in a lot of the songs I had. Period. That was along with Diego to have a complete album in terms of main vocalists.

The song „Divine Future“, where Snake is the main singer, was made for him and/or Messiah from Candlemass. Those two were the only ones I had in mind and even the melodies were made for them. I could easily imagine Messiah singing this song as well, but I’m overjoyed that Snake himself is singing here. It was a dream come true, I must say. I have to add that I didn’t contact Messiah in the end, it was very difficult to find him and it seems he kind of stopped singing.

Not all wishes come true!

Christian is an old buddy of my buddy Ronnie Björnström (he did the pre-production by the way and is very good at mixing himself). So apart from waiting months for Snake to record his parts, it wasn’t that difficult to have all these wonderful people and singers. There are two other familiar faces that should be on this record. Phil Anselmo and Chuck Billy!

Yeah, especially Phil considering singing my songs was more than just a very good feeling. With Phil, it was like he actually said yes (he’s an old buddy of Kyle’s) and he was supposed to sing with Kyle. They’ve been talking about doing something together their whole lives and this was the perfect moment. That was in the summer of 2021, but that was the same time that the Pantera celebration was already on the table for Phil and he just didn’t have time to do it. For Chuck, even though he liked the song, the lyrics weren’t as appropriate, I guess. Anyway, great credit to both of them of course.

Last but not least, a guitarist I have a lot of respect for, Mark McGee from Vicious Rumors, was also supposed to be there, but I just didn’t have room. It was already full of shredders 🙂

I knew from the start that this would be a big project and a big task. But I thought no second of backing down or retreat.

The high-quality physical releases

MH: A project like this is naturally complex, both organizationally and financially. You have to bear in mind that the album has been produced to the highest standard from start to finish with a large group of musicians. And not only that! You also have to consider the high-quality CD book and now the vinyl version of the album has recently been released. That’s a damn big act!

• How do you manage something like this when you’re on your own?

Peda: Yes, completing the whole project and climbing the mountain to release it on LP and CD was quite an achievement. I spent two years of my life on it. Just exchanging all the calls, emails and messages to and from the other members was a nightmare. But in almost all cases a cool nightmare. There were days when I got messages from the bass player who was recording his parts and also from the singer who was recording them. And a studio is a studio. Answering one person one moment and the other seconds later was crazy enough. And we’re talking about recording in New York and Helsinki at the same time. But I have no regrets and would never change any of it.

It’s always about the money!

I was kind of just hoping that the record would be released on a good label. There was positive feedback from two of the biggest metal labels, but in the end nothing came of it. I think even though they liked the music, they were afraid of how they were going to make money with a band of 14 musicians. And I understand them in a way. Most of the musicians here have their own careers and it won’t be possible to go on tour with all of them, but there is a possibility. But unfortunately they haven’t given this a chance or an option. At the end of the day it’s always about the money!

The record had to come out physically and I just found good record companies in Europe and made it, or rather released it independently. Both the LP and the CD weren’t printed in large quantities so I’m kind of behind on expenses here. I just hope that most of them end up selling so that some expenses can be covered. It’s the same with the studios in Sweden where mix and master are done (btw mix: Fredrik Nordström / master: Jens Bogren), I’m behind all the editions. It was the time of corona and normally I travel a lot every year, but since no one is traveling in 2020/21, I decided to invest the money here instead. And even though it’s not a small amount, I don’t regret a second of it. It was worth it!

The intention of the cover artwork

MH: The cover artwork has a message to offer. We see menacing demons that can be assigned to well-known institutions or groups of people in their individual design.

• Would you explain this in more detail?
• Are these demons the evil of our time?

Peda: Yes, those demons on the cover are the evils of our time. The same evils have always been around us, but it seems that they are even more there today. The girl (Aortha) represents the human, you, me, the people who are still on the ground surrounded by everything we are pushed to do!

War (right hand), ‚pharma‘ (left hand in shirt), ‚religion‘ (bottom right hand), ‚finance‘ (left hand), other demons like everyday negative people, jealousy, stabbing in the back… you’re welcome to your own opinion. She is the main guardian/goddess who stands ‚at the doors‘ and decides/weighs with her heart who is allowed to pass and who is not. It’s not just about „heaven or hell“, it’s about whether you go anywhere at all. It depends on what you’ve done in life. You may have heard it 1000 times before, but not in this way. And last but not least, it is never enough to repeat this in life.

Ist die Welt verrückt?

MH: One song is called „When All Around You Is Madness“.

• Do you think this song reflects today’s times? How do you feel about the current age?

Peda: Yes, the Madness song reflects the present time, but also the past and unfortunately also the future, if we as humans don’t do something radical. This is the only world and the only life we have and why, I’ll probably never understand, we do the things we do and why is it all necessary. The world has never been so on the edge of existence before and why should we destroy it ourselves, that’s a good question for all of us. Each of us can and should do better in this life. After all, we are just transients here and why shouldn’t we just have a damn good trip while we are here.

The end of a journey? A musical testament?

MH:Is this album the end of a journey that started in 1988? Or do you see it more as a new beginning? What are you currently working on musically? What are your plans?

Peda: Originally I said that this would be my musical testament. I saw it as the end of the whole Monolit saga that started in 1988. It’s obviously not the journey it should or could have been if the war had never happened in 1992. It would certainly be a very different story and there would have been many albums from us over the years. But it wasn’t meant to be.

What I would like to see is another AORTHA album and maybe some live shows as a real band and unit. Will that ever happen? Well, we’ll see. I already have a lot of material, but whether it will ever see the light of day also depends on the people and fans themselves.

I hope that more people will discover this music. It’s not often these days that you find full-on, pure metal that is made with heart and mind. For some it’s old school, for some it’s not heavy enough, for some it’s too heavy, for some it doesn’t have 7 or 8 strings, for some it’s not modern or cleanly produced enough.

But still, it’s just a damn good album. If it ends up, let’s say, just staying at a pure underground level, then there’s little chance of moving on, but let’s leave it at that, never say never.

MONOLIT ist der Ursprung

AORTHA (Facebook) ist ein Projekt der Musikers Predrag Glogovac (Peda). Er war Gründer und Gitarrist der jugoslawischen Metalband MONOLIT, die von 1988-1992 aktiv war. Bei Gründung der Band waren die Jungs gerade mal 17-18 Jahre alt. Sie hatten große Träume und waren hochmotiviert. 1992 wollte man das Debüt rausbringen, doch der Krieg in Jugoslawien machte die jungen Träume und Pläne zunichte. Doch Musiker zu sein ist für viele eine in der Seele bzw. im Herzen verankerte Passion, die einen trotz aller widrigsten Umstände nicht loslässt. So muss es auch Peda ergangen sein.

Es gab eine Reunion in 2006-2008, wobei das Album „Arcana Balkanica“ veröffentlicht wurde. Jedoch kamen die Mitglieder der Band aus verschiedenen Ländern, was eine produktive dauerhafte Zusammenarbeit unter den damaligen Umständen unmöglich machte. So wurde die Band wieder auf Eis gelegt. Peda hatte im der folgenden Zeit in Norwegen jahrelang mit einigen bekannten Metal-Musikern gespielt.

Ein Neuanfang

Allerdings ließen ihn seine alten unveröffentlichten Songs und Ideen nicht los, so dass er sich im Jahr 2020 entschloss eine neues Projekt zu starten. Dafür lud er Musiker auf der ganzen Welt ein. Sie folgten seiner Einladung, um mit ihm ein Album zu erschaffen. Heute gibt es für die Realisierung eines solchen Projekts technisch andere Möglichkeiten, so dass es heutzutage möglich ist, mit Musikern aus verschiedenen Ländern Songs zu produzieren. So hat Peda diese Möglichkeit genutzt, um seine Herzensangelegenheit in die Realität umzusetzen:

AORTHA als neues Metal-Projekt.

Mit dem Bezug zum Ursprung seines Schaffens hat Peda das Album „MONOLIT“ getauft. Das Coverartwork ist nicht nur hübsch anzusehen, sondern hat auch einen tieferen Sinn. Eine geheimnisvolle Frau ist von vielen verschiedenen Menschen mit dämonischen Gesichtszügen umgeben. Der Mensch kann in vielen verschiedenen Bereichen negative und böse Dinge tun, um anderen Menschen zu schaden. Hier lassen sich z.B. Religionsfanatiker, Kriegstreiber, Verräter, Ausbeuter usw. erkennen. Die Frau ist eine göttliche Wächterin, die das Herz der Menschen in der Hand hält, hineinschaut und ihr wahres Ich offenbart. Sie kehrt also sozusagen das Innere nach außen und so wird das wahre Ich sichtbar, welches sich in dämonischen Fratzen manifestiert.

„Monolit“ hat die pure Heavy Metal Essenz intus!

Der Sound klingt grundsätzlich rau und aggressiv. Eben so, wie man es früher um die Ohren geballert bekam. Das Intro „Symposium“ kommt schon sehr massiv rüber. Das Piano klingt verstörend unheimlich. Mit „Those That Should Not Exist“ bricht dann die Hölle los. Hier offenbart sich ein wahres Thrash Monster, dass gleich mit der Stimmgewalt zweier Sänger aufwarten kann. Kyle Thomas (EXHORDER) und Diego Valdez (DREAM CHILD) lassen hier die Sau raus. Meine Fresse! Was für eine Power! Ein brennender Start katapultiert den Song direkt in den Vollgasmodus. Gitarren und Drums feuern sich gegenseitig an und zwingen mich umgehend in den Headbangmodus.

Ich fühle mich umgehend an den Sound einiger alter bekannten Größen und Helden der Metal-Ära in den 80’er und 90’er erinnert. Aber AORTHA ist weit davon entfernt eine blasse Kopie dessen zu sein. Diese Songs sind viel mehr als das und spielen in einer ganz eigenen Dimension. Der Unterschied besteht zudem darin, dass der Sound nun mit den fortgeschrittenen technischen Produktionsmöglichkeiten noch viel massiver und druckvoller klingt als es früher der Fall war. Zum Glück hat man den Geist der alten Zeiten trotzdem gut eingefangen. Hier wurde nichts glattpoliert und hat nicht vor lauter Glanz und Gloria den rauen Metalsound vergessen.

Exzellentes Songwriting

Bemerkenswert ist ebenfalls das aufwendige Songwriting. Man kann Songs natürlich auch in drei Minuten runterknallen und die Leute würden sagen: „Hey, voll geil! Geht gut ab!“ Natürlich liegt auch häufig die Würze in der Kürze. Allerdings geht man hier einige Schritte weiter. Über die angriffslustige Geradlinigkeit hinaus bieten die Songs immerzu wechselnde Passagen, die für Diversität sorgen. Fast schon selbstverständlich erwartet man bei so einem Sound neben starken Gitarrenriffs auch geile Gitarrensolos. Und man wird auch in dieser Hinsicht nicht enttäuscht. Zum Ende des Songs „Those That Should Not Exist“ gibt es davon eine imponierende Vorstellung. Doch dabei bleibt es nicht!

„Last Of Our Kind“

Es hat natürlich seine Vorteile, wenn man mit einem großen Kader an Musikern arbeiten kann. Jeder Musiker gibt den Songs einen individuellen Touch. Dabei hat man aber darauf geachtet, dass der rote Faden bzw. der grundsätzliche Sound erhalten bleibt. Die Songs haben einen Hang zur Progressivität, indem der Aufbau wie bereits oben erwähnt nicht stur einem Muster folgt. So entstehen oft überlange Spielzeiten, die allerdings wie im Fluge vergehen. Und sogar eine folkloristische Einlage mit akustischer Gitarre fügt sich hervorragend im Song „Last Of Our Kind“ ein, an der sich ein tolles Gitarrensolo anschließt. Die Gitarrenarbeit begeistert jedoch stets über die geilen Solos hinaus. Netta Laurenne (Smackbound) gibt sich hier mit Diego Valdez die Ehre und beide rocken den Song im Duett, wobei der Refrain wunderbar eingängig ins Ohr geht.

Dunkler und härter

geht es dann mit „Forging The Locus“ zur Sache. Diese schweren unheilvollen Riffs am Anfang sind schon mal richtig fett und kündigen das kommende Unheil an, welches dann auch mit Vollgas über einen hinwegfegt. Kyle Thomas und Diego Valdez liefern hier mal wieder als kerniges Sängerduo eine grandiose Show. Die rasenden Passagen sind auf jeden Fall ein Zünder für das Moshpitfeuer. Zwischendurch darf man sich bei den schweren groovigen Parts die Läuse aus dem wallenden Haupthaar schütteln. Und bei den verdammt starken Mitsing-Refrains, die heroische Feelings versprühen, wird man mit in die Luft gereckten Fäusten lautstark die Textzeilen mitsingen.

Ein Klassiker

„Keep The Dream“ wird wieder melodischer. Ein knackiger Song mit wunderbaren Vocal-Lines und einem göttlichen ausgiebigen Solo. Er hat eben alles, was so einen perfekten klassischen Heavy Metal ausmacht. Es ist wahrlich eine Freude diesen detailverliebten Songs zu lauschen, die zudem noch erstklassig produziert worden sind. Der Sound ist echt klasse geworden.

„Maximus Metallus“

ist doch mal ein geiler Titel und dieser steht sinnbildlich für das musikalische Motto des Albums. Der Song trumpft ebenfalls mit geschickten Rhythmusvariationen auf. An die langezogenen Vocals im Refrain musste ich mich erst kurz gewöhnen, aber dann fand ich das doch ziemlich cool. Mal was anderes!

Auch die Single „Divine Future“ hat einen besonderen Charme beim Gesang, denn Denis Belanger Snake von Voivod schenkt diesem Song seine Stimme. Und dann überrascht Euch dieser wunderbare harmonische Refrain mit Sängerin Alessia Scolletti im Duett. So genial! Vor allem wenn nach diesem Verwöhnprogramm und einem weiteren megageilen Solo der Song ab Minute 03:15 völlig eskaliert und jeden Moshpit zum Kochen bringen könnte. Total crazy!

Ein episches Meisterwerk: „When All Around You Is Madness“

Für mich ist dieser Song ein Highlight unter den Highlights. Die ursprüngliche Version wurde bereits 1991 gespielt. In seiner aktuellen Version ist es ist mit acht Minuten Spielzeit der längste Song auf dem Album. Es ist schlichtweg ein Meisterwerk! Dieser Track ist eine epische Reise für sich und hat so viele musikalische Abenteuer zu bieten, wobei man sich wünschen würde, dass die Reise niemals endet. Fünf Sänger vereinigen sich zu einem Konglomerat der Sonderklasse, dass die Geschichte des Songs höchst spannend von Höhepunkt zu Höhepunkt treibt.

Es beginnt mit einer ausgiebigen treibenden instrumentalen Einleitung. Dann wird es plötzlich ruhiger und ein gemischtes Vocalduett übernimmt die Bühne, um eine traumhaft gefühlvolle Performance hinzulegen. Doch dann kehrt der Song eindrucksvoll mit ganzer Kraft zurück. Mit viel Tempo und Power wird man mitgerissen. Das harmonische Gesangsduett darf man zwischendurch immer wieder genießen, denn es überzeugt auch in den härteren Passagen. Die überaus vortreffliche Gitarrenarbeit ist ja ohnehin eine Selbstverständlichkeit.

Fazit

Das Album „Monolit“ von AORTHA ist ein Meisterwerk! Es ist die perfekte Show mit allem, was packenden Heavy Metal ausmacht. Dabei findet man eine super Balance zwischen rauer aggressiver Härte und harmonischen Melodien. Diese Balance äußert sich mitunter in progressiven Songstrukturen, welche aber das Ziel nicht aus den Augen verlieren. Vielmehr ist es eine höchstspannende mitreißende und auch faszinierende Reise, die man nicht verpassen sollte. Jeder beteiligte Musiker zeigt hier Bestleistungen, die das ganze Projekt auf ein unfassbar hohes Level katapultiert haben.

Dieses Album wird auf jeden Fall in der Liga der Top Alben des Jahres 2023 mitspielen.

Außerdem wurde dieses Album in einem hochwertigen Digibook verewigt. In dem Hardcoverbuch gibt es tolle Fotos und die Geschichte der Band Monolit, so wie die Hintergründe zur Entstehung des Projekts AORTHA. Peda hat seinen Traum in jeglicher Hinsicht perfekt verwirklicht. MONOLIT is the origin

AORTHA (Facebook) is a project of the musician Predrag Glogovac (Peda). He was the founder and guitarist of the Yugoslavian metal band MONOLIT, which was active from 1988-1992. When the band was founded, the guys were just 17-18 years old. They had big dreams and were highly motivated. In 1992 they wanted to release the debut, but the war in Yugoslavia destroyed the young dreams and plans. But being a musician is for many a passion anchored in the soul or in the heart, which does not let go despite all adverse circumstances. It must have been the same for Peda.

There was a reunion in 2006-2008, releasing the album „Arcana Balkanica“. However, the members of the band came from different countries, which made a productive permanent cooperation impossible under the circumstances of that time. Thus, the band was put on hold again. Peda had been playing with some well-known metal musicians for years in Norway. However, his old unreleased songs and ideas did not let him go, so he decided to start a new project in 2020.

For this he invited musicians all over the world. They accepted his invitation to create an album with him. Today there are technically other possibilities for the realization of such a project, so nowadays it is possible to produce songs with musicians from different countries. So Peda used this opportunity to turn his heart’s desire into reality:

AORTHA as a new metal project.

With the reference to the origin of his work Predrag Glogovac has titled the album „MONOLIT“. The cover artwork is not only pretty to look at, but also has a deeper meaning. A mysterious woman is surrounded by many different people with demonic characteristics. Humans can do negative and evil things in many different areas to harm other people. For example, religious fanatics, warmongers, traitors, exploiters, etc. can be identified here. The woman is a divine guardian who holds the heart of people in her hand, looks into it and reveals her true self. So she turns the inside out, so to speak, and thus the true I becomes visible, which manifests itself in demonic grimaces.

„Monolit“ has the pure Heavy Metal essence!

The sound sounds basically rough and aggressive. Just the way you used to get it banged around your ears. The intro „Symposium“ is already very massive. The piano sounds disturbingly eerie. With „Those That Should Not Exist“ all hell breaks loose. Here reveals a true thrash monster that can immediately come up with the vocal power of the two singers Kyle Thomas (EXHORDER) and Diego Valdez (DREAM CHILD). Damn it! What a power is revealed here! Guitars and drums fire each other up and immediately force me into headbang mode.

I immediately feel reminded of the sound of some old well-known heroes of the Metal era in the 80’s and 90’s. But AORTHA is far from being a pale copy of that. These songs are much more than that. The difference is also that now with the advanced technical production possibilities, the sound is much more massive and punchy than it used to be backthen. Fortunately, the spirit of the old days has still been captured well. The raw Metal sound is not forgotten!

Excellent songwriting

The elaborate songwriting is also remarkable. Of course, you can bang out songs in three minutes and people would say, „Hey, totally awesome! Goes off like hell!“ Of course, short and sharp is of course a great thing. However, here AORTHA go a few steps further. Beyond the aggressive straightforwardness, the songs offer constantly changing passages that provide diversity. You get strong guitar riffs next fantastic guitar solos. At the end of the song „Those That Should Not Exist“ there is an impressive performance of it. But it doesn’t stop there!

„Last Of Our Kind“

It has its advantages when you can work with a large cadre of musicians. Each musician gives the songs an individual touch. However, one has made sure that the red thread or the basic sound is preserved. The songs have a tendency to progressiveness, in that the structure, as already mentioned above, does not stubbornly follow a pattern. This often results in overlong playing times, which fly by. And even a folkloristic interlude with acoustic guitar fits in excellently in the song „Last Of Our Kind“, which is followed by a great guitar solo. However, the guitar work always excites beyond the awesome solos. Netta Laurenne (Smackbound) sing a duet here with Diego Valdez and they inspire with a wonderful catching chorus.

Darker and harder

sounds „Forging The Locus“. These heavy ominous riffs at the beginning are already really fat and announce the coming disaster, which then sweeps over you with all power. Kyle Thomas and Diego Valdez deliver here once again as a pithy singer duo a terrific show. The raging passages are definitely an igniter for the mosh pit fire. In between you can shake the lice out of your flowing hair during the heavy groovy parts. And with the damn strong sing-along choruses, which radiate heroic feelings, you will loudly sing along the lyrics with fists raised in the air.

A classic

„Keep The Dream“ becomes more melodic again. A crisp song with wonderful vocal lines and a divine extensive solo. It just has everything that makes such a perfect classic Heavy Metal. It is truly a pleasure to listen to these detailed songs, which have also been produced first class. The sound on the album is really great.

„Maximus Metallus“

is a cool title and symbolizes the musical motto of the album. The song offers nice rhythm variations. I had to get used to the long drawn-out vocals in the chorus for a short time, but then I found it pretty cool. A little different style!

Also „Divine Future“ has a special charm on vocals, because Denis Belanger Snake of Voivod gives his voice to this song. And then this wonderful harmonic chorus surprises you with singer Alessia Scolletti in duet. So ingenious! Especially when another mega awesome solo follows and the song completely escalates from minute 03:15 and could make any mosh pit boil. Totally crazy!

An epic masterpiece: „When All Around You Is Madness“

For me, this song is a highlight among the highlights. The original version was played back in 1991. In its current version it is the longest song on the album with eight minutes playing time. This track is an epic journey in itself and has so many musical adventures to offer. And you wish the journey would never end. Five singers unite to form a high class conglomerate that drives the story of the song most excitingly from climax to climax.

It starts with an extensive driving instrumental introduction. Then it suddenly gets quieter and a mixed vocal duet takes over the stage to show a dreamlike soulful performance. But then the song returns impressively with all its force. With a lot of speed and power you are blown away. The harmonic vocal duet can be heard every now and then and is also convincing in the harder passages. The extremely excellent guitar work is a matter of course anyway.

Conclusion

The album „Monolit“ by AORTHA is a masterpiece! It’s the perfect show of everything that makes gripping and entertaining Heavy Metal. Thereby a super balance between rough aggressive hardness and harmonic melodies is given. This balance is sometimes expressed in progressive song structures, which do not lose sight of the goal. Rather, it is a highly exciting rousing and also fascinating journey that should not be missed. Each musician involved shows here best performances, which have catapulted the whole project to an incredibly high level.

This album will definitely be in the league of the top albums of 2023 for me.
